Mawkish Twaddle with Bob N., No. 322, 12/23/23

This week’s Twaddle includes arguably the best Knickerbockers pastiche, a song produced and co-written by Leon Russell that no one knows, back-to-back tracks featuring prominent mallet instruments, possibly the most prominent harpsichord in a Guess Who song, a Roger Nicholls cover but no James Brown or Kraftwerk covers, examples of US bubblegum and Italian prog, my favorite cut from the most underrated Belle & Sebastian album, a very small number of tracks recorded this year (just 22 percent), and one Christmas tune. New: Cynthia Nelson Band; Search Results; Baumarkt; The Half-Cubes; Keichi & The Coconut Groove; Schwund; Gabriel da Rosa; Soft Covers; The Reds, Pinks And Purples; Bory; and Brenda I Funky. Previously unreleased: Primal Scream. Newly reissued: Meat Joy. Newly compiled: Omertà. From sometime between 1956 and 2017: Ray Conniff And The Singers, Lollipop Train, The Dentists, Pain Teens, Stuart Moxham, The Yummies, Daryll-Ann, Fat Tulips, Hartley C. Mawkish Twaddle with Bob N., No. 320, 12/9/23

We’re now well into the annual deceleration of the new release schedule. That was just the excuse I needed to sprinkle more than the usual number of older selections into this week’s Twaddle. But there was no dearth of new tracks in the program. Far from it, as I spun enticing new sounds from The Small Square, Half Hexagon, The Maureens, Jim Nothing, Water Machine, The Jasmine Minks, Large Plants, Blue Orchids, Lavender Blush, The Spatulas, Zenxith, J. McFarlane's Reality Guest, Ian M Bailey, Pop Filter, Bory, The Quarterlies, Misophone, Primer Infant, Daily Worker, Cuticles, Überspannung, Seablite, Harp, Bill Ryder-Jones, Wurld Series, Hochzeitskapelle & Eddie Marcon, David Christian, Helen Infam, Novelty Island, Pop Crimes, The Bug Club, and Ducks Ltd. There was also a newly compiled selection from Soft Location, and newly reissued gems from Saint Etienne and Peter Gutteridge. From the past: Pezband, The Yummy Fur, Al Stewart, Barbara Manning, Lilys, The Sorrows (UK), Watoo Watoo, and Jim Noir. Also from the past, but listed separately to avoid irksome semicolons in the preceding paragraph, a weird and wild paean to LSD from Babs, Marina & De Hippe Vogels.

Mawkish Twaddle with Bob N., No. 277, 1/7/23

This week’s Twaddle is an interesting one. An atmospheric waterfall that took place in the middle of the three hours short-circuited the station’s stream. The end result is that this program is nine and a half minutes shorter than the usual Twaddle. But don’t despair. There are excellent new tracks from Eyelids, The Hepburns, Papernut Cambridge, Marlody, The Happy Somethings, Big Blood, The Cowsills, Jonny Swift, Hutch Harris, Alison Eales, Cousines Like Shit, Herr Wade, Ada Oda, Brower, Silver Biplanes, Hack-Poets Guild, Poor Performer, Ben Reed & Miranda Reed, Légumes Sex, Euros Childs, Memorials, Galore, Danny Arakaki, Paranoid Americans, The Lemon Twigs, Balk, Nighttime, Mira Cook, Sad Eyed Beatniks, DUFDUF, Non Bruises, En Attendant Ana, Mélanie, Death And Vanilla, and Rozi Plain,  There’s also something new from The Reds, Pinks And Purples. He/they are listed separately here because I didn’t want to have to use semicolons instead of commas in the above paragraph. The price of semicolons is prohibitive these days! From the past: Terry Hall (RIP), The Fall, Yoko Ono, The Mekons, Bread (David Gates apparently is still alive), and The Frogs.
