Black Artists’ Networks in Dialogue (BAND) Gallery and Cultural Centre is a charitable organization dedicated to supporting, documenting and showcasing the artistic and cultural contributions of Black artists and cultural workers in Canada and internationally. BAND Offsite is an initiative to create an array of opportunities to connect BAND Gallery artists with new audiences. In keeping with BAND’s vision to inspire, enlighten and educate through the arts, BAND’s artist from all stages of their career will be allowed to experiment and experience new networks.

Join us as John Hartman and Steven Brunelle discuss the stories and creative process behind Sun Dance, Brunelle's first solo exhibition at the gallery. We met Brunelle through John Hartman as they are neighbours in their hometown of Lafontaine, Ontario. Hartman has been mentoring Brunelle over the last few years and curated his exhibition at the Midland Cultural Centre in 2022 which received much acclaim. While referencing the Woodland School of painting that includes the artist Norval Morrisseau, Brunelle has gradually developed his own unique style. He incorporates both contemporary stories about everyday life, as well as those that have been passed down from his mother from the Kitigan Zibi First Nation.

Acclaimed photographer Edward Burtynsky leads a Q&A with mentor and internationally recognized photojournalist, Sebastião Salgado, on the topic of his exhibition, Magnum Opus. The pair discuss Salgado's decision to pursue photography as a career, stories from shoots around the globe and Instituto Terra, a foundation to regenerate a part of the Brazilian forest started by Salgado and Lélia Wanick Salgado in 1999.

John Hartman and Sara Angel, Founder & Executive Director of the Art Canada Institute, discuss Hartman's exhibition, From Gros Morne to Fogo: New Paintings and Watercolours. The pair discuss Hartman's long-time connection to the landscape of Newfoundland, how he creates watercolours on-site and the translation into large-scale paintings once he is back in his Ontario studio. Mackenzie speaks with Milroy about growing up around influential Canadian artists, personal events that have shaped her work and how her paintings have evolved over the course of her career.

John Hartman discusses his exhibition 'People and Place' with Ian Brown. Over the last four years, Hartman has been painting Canadian authors situated above their “home landscape”. As Hartman defines it, one’s home landscape is not necessarily where they are born but the place they are most influenced by. Participating authors in the project include Ian Brown, David Adams Richards, Esi Edugyan, Lisa Moore, Linden MacIntyre, Kathleen Winter and Thomas King.
