The Transporter In 60 Seconds
Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) vs The Transporter (2002) It's a battle of the "Chase Scenes" as two action packed films go head to head for a spot on the Greatest Films of the 21st Century List. "Gone in 60 Seconds" was a big hit upon its release in 2000 but has since faded into relative obscurity. The final chase packs a punch but does the rest of the film hold up? We answer that question and more. "The Transporter" on the other hand has gone on to spawn several sequels even more successful than the original. We had a great time watching this one as it lead to some unexpected laughs and forgotten thrills. It was a really enjoyable recording and we think you will have a good time as well. Phantom Zoolander
Zoolander (2001) vs Phantom Thread (2017)The category is "Fashion Industry Films" and we have two very different movies going head to head. Zoolander is an outlandish comedy with wacky jokes and even wackier outfits. Phantom Thread brings a more sophisticated style along with some truly interesting themes on love and desire. Most importantly it's the first appearance by a pair of distinct directors with Ben Stiller and Paul Thomas Anderson. Will either feature score 8 or more stars and be inducted onto the Modern Classics Greatest Films of the 21st Century List? Wendy and Skinamarink
Wendy And Lucy (2008) vs Skinamarink (2023) The category for today's battle episode is "Streaming on Tubi". With wide range of selections we landed on two very different movies. However that doesn't mean we weren't able to find some commonalities. "Wendy and Lucy" is a touching yet bleak look at the sate of economic struggle in the U.S. , directed by Kelly Reichardt who brings her distinct simplistic style. "Skinamarink" on the other hand is a chilling lo-fi horror ASMR experimentation that lead to a very interesting conversation. Make sure you turn up the volume on this episode to hear every whisper and growl. Will either film score 8 or more star and land on the Greatest Films of the 21st Century List ? "Metropolis" is dystopian saga full of robots, revolutionaries, and political killings. It was a wild watch that made for some interesting discussions. The Darjeeling Unstoppable
The Darjeeling Limited (2007) vs. Unstoppable (2010)Today we tackle one of our countries oldest forms of transportation. The category is "Train Movies" and we bring you two very different locomotive based films. The Darjeeling Limited is a family drama from auteur filmmaker Wes Anderson. A somewhat "spiritual" journey that leads to more goofs than breakthroughs for Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Jason Schwartzman. We also discuss Unstoppable. A non stop (pun intended) action thriller featuring Denzel Washington as a conductor having a monumentally bad day at work. With Tony Scott directing in his signature full throttle style we found ourselves at odds regarding the overall quality of the filmmaking. So sit down in the quiet car, pour some sweet lime, and find out if you have what it takes to stop this speeding engine of an episode. First up is the Coen Brother's goof ball caper "Burn After Reading". It gave us plenty to chat about including a surprisingly wacky performance by Brad Pitt. Then it's Tim Burton's " Big Eyes". Eternal Savages Of The Spotless Mind
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004) vs. The Savages (2007)It's a battle of words as the category for this week's episode is "Best Original Screenplay Nominees". Out of all the possible contenders we settled on two very different films. Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind is an irreverent sci-fi dramedy starring a very subdued Jim Carey along with a very animated Kate Winslet. Director Michel Gondry and writer Charlie Kaufman prove to be a very complimentary duo with a surreal story to match Gondry's avant-garde imagery. The Savages on the other hand is a grounded comedy written and directed by Tamara Jenkins. The low key script is brought to life by outstanding performances from Laura Linney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It's a strong pair of movies. Neither of which are to be missed. This episode is so long it might be hard to remember where it even started. We suggest getting comfy. With an Urban Outfitters pillow perhaps? Selma Moves
Nigh Moves (2013) vs Selma (2014)The category for this battle episode is “Political Activism”. Given the current state of U.S. politics being active politically is extremely important so your host Mike and Kendell thought it would be a good time to explore how the subject is portrayed in modern cinema. The pair of films up for debate are two very different takes on how to and how not to stand up to for what you believe in. Kelly Reichardt’s “Night Moves” is a searing thriller on activism turning violent. The film raises some interesting questions on the morals of extremism. While “Selma” (directed by Ava DuVernay) is a harrowing biopic following Martin Luther King Jr. during the marches on Alabama that lead to historical change for the mid 60’s Civil Rights Movement. Your hosts cover a lot of ground with this one (no pun intended). It’s a very informative episode but the question still remains ; will either film score 8 or more stars and be inducted onto the Greatest Films of The 21st Century List? Tune in for the answer. Synchronic Not Guaranteed
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) Vs. Synchronic (2019)Another battle episode is upon us and the category is “Time Travel”. Your hosts Mike and Kendell did their best to bring you two movies you might not be familiar with. It’s an interesting conversation on the pitfalls of genre filmmaking tropes, what both films could have done better, and whether or not the time travel genre has much to offer in the way of 2000’s classics. Kendell’s pick was Safety Not Guaranteed a forgotten 2012 comedy starring Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, and Jake Johnson. Mike went with Synchronic from 2019. A gritty sci-fi drama starring Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan. Neither host holds back on critique which lead to some very choice words for each movie. Despite it all the question remains; will either movie make the Greatest Films of the 21st Century List? You’ll need to listen to find out. So take a pill, get on your multi-dimensional motorboats and take a ride through with the Modern Classics Podcast. Remember to Rate, Review, and Follow the show!
