Excuses, excuses, you hear them every day. It seems that human beings are masters at finding reasons to avoid responsibility, delay action, or evade accountability. From the smallest tasks to the weightiest commitments, excuses can be easily conjured up to justify inaction or negligence. But as prevalent as excuses are, they ultimately hinder progress, hinder growth, and hinder the fulfillment of our potential.Excuses often stem from a desire to protect ourselves from failure or discomfort. They provide a convenient shield behind which we can hide, avoiding the challenges and risks that come with stepping out of our comfort zones. The past several weeks we have been teaching no the relationship between water baptism and discipleship. We concluded that one cannot claim to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, without being baptized in water. We also established that water baptism Is only the beginning of the journey of discipleship. This week, we will further explore that journey, and consider the possibility that some disciples may lose their way in their spiritual travels. The Bible calls this ‘backsliding’. When making a decision, we form opinions and choose actions via mental processes which are influenced by biases, reason, emotions, and memories. The simple act of deciding supports the notion that we have free will. We weigh the benefits and costs of our choice, and then we cope with the consequences. Factors that limit the ability to make good decisions include missing or incomplete information, urgent deadlines, and limited physical or emotional resources. I miss singing the old hymns in church. Many of those hymns may seem outdated today, but the lyrics have withstood the test of time. One of those hymns is by Julie Johnston, called ‘God’s Grace’.
