The book of Judges is one that is exceedingly relevant and helpful to us today, even if hard to see at first glance. These 4 Judges are commended for their faith here, and they are such great testimonies to the power of God in a spiritually barren land.

Rahab is the most unusual entry in this catalogue of faith heroes. She is not what you would expect from a hero of faith. But then again, are any of us?

What ought our response to the risen Jesus be?

After Jesus entered Jerusalem, he wept - because they did not recognise Him! Have you recognised Him for who He truly is?

Jacob blesses Ephraim & Manasseh and leans upon his staff. What makes Jacob do this knowingly? It is his faith. We consider here faith in later life, and also the subject of adoption as sons and daughters of God in Jesus Christ.

Isaac’s faith in blessing Jacob and Esau is not obvious at first, and yet despite his weakness he made decisions and acted by faith - he did what he could in the light of what had been revealed.

‘These all died in faith’. What would it look like for us to die in faith, in the light of the victorious death-conquering death and resurrection of Jesus?

Maybe we do not expect to find Sarah in this list of heroes of the faith. We all think of her great doubt, and yet does this not go to show that faith overcomes doubt. God had a great plan for Sarah and Isaac, and Sarah judged Him faithful who had promised.

Abraham lived an unsettled life, but God had a plan. Even when our lives feel unsettled, God has a plan for our good - and that is that we might trust in Jesus Christ alone, and look forward to eternity with Him!

Abram went out, not knowing where he was going. Sometimes the Christian life feels like groping in the dark. However Abram shows us what faithful service of a faithful God looks like by hearing His command, and immediately setting out to obey.

After Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to these faithful women, and they rejoiced in seeing Him: rejoicing at His appearance.

The injustice of the people which achieved the justice of God!

Noah was a willing and faithful servant of God. Saved not by his works, but through the grace of God alone: he serves as an example of faith in the midst of hostility.

Often we are stuck in the habit of ‘doing things’ in order to attempt to please God. This verse makes clear to us that without faith, it is impossible to please Him. Is your faith in Him and in Him alone, and are we doing all that we do building upon the relationship purchased for us by Jesus Christ?

Enoch lived but never died. He is numbered only with Elijah the prophet in this sense. The account of Enoch teaches us of a man who has close fellowship with God, but also teaches us of the power of God over death itself.

Hebrews 11:4 speaks of the contrast between Cain and Abel, what separated them? Abel offered his sacrifice by faith!

Faith opens our eyes. And gloriously, it opens our eyes to the wonders of creation. And with these opened eyes we see the eternity, power, and authority of our God, might we glory in this!

Old Testament believers were also saved by faith, this is a fact we often forget. And not only this, but they lived by faith and obtained a good testimony by it. Using Job (who is not mentioned in this chapter) to illustrate this point, we consider his faithfulness in trial as seen in Job 19.

How does practical, outworked faith manifest itself? Progressive faith is to add flesh to the bones of reality which the Bible reveals to us; faith involves the past, our present, and our future.

Central to the Christian life is faith! Further, our Christian lives are built upon faith. This sermon kicks off our new series on Hebrews 11; as we consider why it is vital that we persevere in the faith and take it seriously.

We are justified by faith. This doctrine, which was central to the Reformation is the gospel itself - how is your faith? Do you take it seriously? Are you growing in it? Do you trust in Jesus Christ and in Him alone?

We are warned here of a coming ‘Day of the Lord’. The warning of the prophet Joel is relevant even to us today, there is a Day coming when God will bring all things to Himself and justice shall be done. You and I will be judged, and Joel so exhorts us: ‘Now therefore, turn’.

Jesus Christ is coming back! What will it be like when He does? It is not for us to determine the times or places, rather we trust that He is to return, if we are in Him, we are to desire that day greatly, for all will be made right.

What is the significance of Jesus’ resurrection? This passage teaches us that without the resurrection, the Christian faith falls apart, and due to Christ’s resurrection, we are assured that death is not the end: mankind will also one day rise, will it be to eternal joy, or to eternal condemnation?

The atonement: the reconciliation of God and man in Christ Jesus. What a wonderful truth, that in Christ, we can have a relationship with God despite our sin: God remains just, and He is also our justifier!
