Last words with Dad
“Goodbye Daddy! You can go to be with Jesus now. I love you. See you in heaven.” I was shouting through my tears on the phone. April 30, 2021, was the last time I spoke to my dad on Earth. He had had a massive heart attack. I tried to see him at the hospital, but they wouldn’t let me because of COVID. A few hours later, he slipped into eternity. I found it hard to process my grief while having to go to work and act normal. I wasn’t young, but I felt the sting of losing my daddy. We hadn’t ever been very close emotionally, and I grieved the loss. Over the years since then, I have learned to know and experience God as my Daddy in heaven and to trust him more.We all go through painful periods in our lives. We have a choice; will we become bitter or better? With God’s help, we can become much better. He wants to make us more like Jesus. God is preparing us for important tasks in His kingdom. Let us praise Jesus with joy that he has counted us worthy to suffer. These trials are a brief blip in view of eternity. Everyone, not only Christians, experiences painful trials in this temporary life. But unlike our unbelieving friends, we have God’s Holy Spirit’s power to draw on.Bill Bright, the founder of Cru/Power to Change, writes, “If you are experiencing difficulties in your life-physical illness, loss of loved ones, financial adversity- remember … James 1:2-4 [today’s passage]... Be happy, knowing that God will work in your life to accomplish His holy purpose.” (Promises, Day 12, New Life Publications. 1993)My brothers and sisters, you will have many kinds of trouble. But this gives you a reason to be very happy. 3 You know that when your faith is tested, you learn to be patient in suffering. 4 If you let that patience work in you, the end result will be good. You will be mature and complete. You will be all that God wants you to be.- James 1:2-4 (ERV)Dear Jesus, I don’t like my trials, but I know from your Word that you are using them in my life. Help me to rejoice in you despite how I feel today.Throughout this day: Check out this online devotion from Bill Bright. Praising for Joy Ep 52
My devotion originally published on March 10th, 2026 / Sheyvah Rex“You’re not a good Christian because you committed that terrible sin yesterday,” the voice in my head was accusing.“You confessed it to Me. I have already forgiven you. Walk in my love.”I had a choice. Would I believe the voice of the enemy bringing me disgrace or the truth of God’s word bringing me forgiveness and joy? Would I hang my head in shame for my actions or rejoice that God forgave me because of Jesus’s blood spilled for my sin?Although the enemy was attacking my thoughts and emotions, I knew a sure way to combat him. I chose to praise the Lord with my voice. The devil never appreciates hearing about the wonders of God’s love, and so he fled. Like David in today’s Psalm, we can hold our heads high even in the presence of our enemies because God hides us.Over the years, I have struggled occasionally with feeling down or “blah”. I have learned that when I praise the Lord even when I don’t feel like it, the darkness leaves and my feelings become joyful. Jesus is always worthy of our praise. Worship and praise are powerful weapons against the enemy, bringing joy in hard trials.Dear Father, please help me to choose to praise you even when I don’t feel like it. Thank you, that you are more powerful than the enemy, and he will run away when I exalt you.For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock. Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who surround me. At his sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music.- Psalm 27:5-6 (NLT)Throughout this day: replace negative thoughts and emotions with praise. Sing along to this song: Victory Chant (Hail Jesus, You’re my King) https://youtu.be/rHTJZYOuHIc?si=EFCagBkLo_ytYdCNhttps://thelife.com/devotionals/praising-for-joy This is a public episode. True Love Serves Ep.51
My lovely parents several months before Daddy died in 2021“Ow!” Dad squealed. My mother attempted to clean up her husband in the small restroom. My father had had dementia for five years and lost control of his bodily functions in the last two years of his life. Stress comes in different forms. Caregiving is not for the faint of heart. Mom displayed her love for Dad not only in words but consistently cared for him even in the messy times. She showed humility and grace, which came from the Holy Spirit. When Jesus said to love each other as he had loved us, he hadn’t yet gone to the cross and laid down his life for us. He had just finished washing the disciples’ feet. This was a job usually done by slaves. None of the disciples had chosen to wash the others’ feet. They were too busy arguing over which of them was the greatest (Luke 22:24). Jesus showed us all that he is the greatest servant leader. So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.- John 13:34-35 (NLT)The word for love in today’s verse is agape in Greek. This word means unconditional love, not based on feelings. What about us? Do we say we love people? Of course. But then when there is an opportunity to serve that person, do we do it? Willingly? Or do we perform the service grudgingly? Jesus said that showing true love would prove to the unbelievers that we are really following him.Dear Lord, please help me to show true love practically to those around me.Throughout this day: consider your relationships. Love In Action and Truth Ep.50!
“I haven’t seen you in years!” Elizabeth exclaimed.“Actually, I came to see you last week,” I smiled. “Do you want to go for a car ride to the beach and get a mocha?” An hour later, on our way back, she asked if we could drive by the beach and get a mocha. “We just did!” I reassured her.Elizabeth had been part of our former church and had babysat our sons. Now she is in the dementia ward of a long-term care home and sees it as a prison. Her prayer request is always: “I pray that God gives me a human male companion so I can live with him and get out of this place. If not, then God please take me to your heavenly home.”I feel God has given me the assignment of loving and visiting her regularly, especially as she has no family who will visit. Our verse today tells us not to love only with words but with actions. It is easy to say we love someone. It takes God’s help to invest time and money into loving someone with our deeds. Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.- 1 John 3:18Pray with me: Lord God, please help me to love with my actions, not just my words.Throughout this day: look for ways to show practical love to those around you. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and give you all that you need to fulfil his will.Thank you for reading/watching/listening. I pray that you are drawn closer to our Lord. Please reach out for prayer if you have something for which you’d like me to pray. It is my delight and privilege to pray with and for you. Harvest Life (Ep.49)
Just one more episode of this delicious show, I told myself one evening. Just one more chapter of this titillating book, I thought the next day.Little by little, I felt like I was slipping further away from God as my entertainment choices became more risqué.Have you too lived to satisfy your sinful nature? Our verse for today says that if we do, then we will reap decay and death. But if we live to please the Holy Spirit, we will harvest everlasting life. God knows our hearts. He knows what will truly satisfy our souls. It isn’t entertainment or people or things. Our hearts will be restless until they find their rest in our loving Father above. That is a paraphrase of “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in you.” Augustine of Hippo, ConfessionsLet us press on to know the Lord through his Word and his Spirit. Let us make the right choice to stand on his side and fight the good fight of faith.Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.- Gal.6:7-8 NLT Dear Father, I’m sorry for all the time I have wasted on ungodly entertainment. I could have spent it getting to know you better. Please help me to spend time with you in the Bible each day. Teach me what I need to know. Thank you.Throughout this day: ask a friend to keep you accountable to read a chunk of the Bible every day. Share with each other what Jesus has been telling you through his Word.https://thelife.com/devotionals/harvest-life (Jan. 16, 2026)That’s it for today. Helpless Against Falling? (Ep.48)
It seemed beautiful and thrilling but also dangerous and terrifying. The first kiss was full of mystery and promise, but I began weeping. While dating as a young adult, I made wrong choices regarding physical boundaries in a relationship. God is faithful, and he forgave me. In a new relationship, I had to ask him for help daily to choose the righteous way.Sometimes we think we are strong in a certain area, but we are one weak moment away from disaster. We are helpless, whether we admit it or not. Jesus wants us to come to him for help in every situation. Ole Hallesby wrote, in his classic book Prayer, “Prayer and helplessness are inseparable. Only he who is helpless can truly pray. Your helplessness is your best prayer.“You are a unique person, but your temptations are the same as what others have experienced for thousands of years. We don’t start out as wise people, but God is more than willing to give us wisdom. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. (James 1:5 NLT)I have made bad choices, but they have taught me hard-earned lessons from the Holy Spirit to start making better ones.Dear Lord, I have so many areas where I could sin against you. I am helpless without you. Please help me to lean on you and take the way of escape you give me when I am tempted to do wrong.Throughout this Day: Write out today’s verses on a card, read them aloud slowly and think about how you can put them into practice with God’s help. If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.- 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 (NLT)Thank you for reading/watching/listening. I pray that you are drawn closer to our Lord. Please reach out for prayer if you have something for which you’d like me to pray. I lead two online weekly prayer meetings for my church and pray with people after church service. Hide and Seek
“... fifty-eight, fifty-nine, sixty! Ready or not, here I come!” my son’s voice echoes through our dark house.“Aha! I found you!”At long last after a fruitless search, the last child appears. “Where were you? I looked everywhere,” the seeker says.It is delightful to play hide and seek with children who have a joyful anticipation of where they might find people. Or to play with others who hope that you won’t find them.It might seem to you that Christ is hiding. He is not, although at present we can’t see him with our physical eyes because he is in heaven. But his Holy Spirit lives in us. We need to seek him spiritually, while anticipating the day we will see him in his resurrected body with our physical eyes. Some people believe that when this life ends, there will be nothing and no one in existence. This gives them no motivation for avoiding sin. No motivation to please anyone but themselves.I am already God’s little girl, although I still don’t know what I’ll look like when I see Jesus one day. But the wonderful, blessed truth is that I do know because God’s word tells me I will be exactly like him. No ugly sin will mar my face or actions. I’ll be holy and perfect just like Jesus. This outstanding future reality motivates me to obey my Father in heaven and to keep myself from intentionally displeasing him.Lord, thank you that because of Jesus I’m your approved and adopted child. I’m growing into the family likeness, but when I am with you someday soon, you will absolutely transform me to look exactly like you.Throughout this Day: Read today’s verse again.Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.- 1 John 3:2-3 NLTAsk God to reveal areas or sins in your life which need to be confessed and purified. Receive his forgiveness because Jesus shed his blood for you. Read 1 John 1:9.But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. NLTThat’s it for today. You’ve been listening to Perfect King’s Imperfect Princess and I’m your host Sheyvah Rex. Peace Instead of Terror
Originally published on The Life.com December 4th, 2025 / Sheyvah RexAnd they speak of how you are looking forward to the coming of God’s son from heaven- Jesus, whom God raised from the dead. He is the one who has rescued us from the terrors of the coming judgment.- 1 Thess. 1:10 NLTSome ask, “Are you ready for Christmas?”They mean, “Have you bought all the gifts and food? Have you decorated your house?”Celebrating Christmas was not meant to burden and stress people.I’m looking forward to celebrating Jesus’ birthday. Are you?Today’s verse encourages us to also look forward to Jesus coming back again to earth. We who trust in Jesus for salvation, don’t have to dread his return. But the people who are still rebelling against him then will certainly have reason to fear. The coming judgment will be terrifying to them, because they will be sentenced and punished for not following the King of the universe. So, I’m looking forward to Jesus’ return. It will be far more glorious than celebrating Christmas to see him face to face. He will be in charge, and God will punish the prince of this world forever.Father God raised Christ, and he will raise us up to be with him forever. We will be forgiven and radiant in his presence. Praise the Lord!Lord God, thank you for saving me and rescuing me from fear of judgement. Thank you for giving me peace instead of dread. Please give me courage to share this fantastic news with others so they can be with you forever too.Throughout this day: Consciously and verbally give Father God all your worries and fears. Paid by the Prince (Ep.45)
He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.- Ephesians 1:7 NLTImagine that you are caged up like an animal. The guard is mean and doesn’t let you bathe or eat or use the washroom. Your clothes are grimy, and the smell is disgusting. The other people in the cage are angry too and fight with you constantly. Day after day, year after year, you are in despair, wishing you could get free. But you know there’s no hope of earning your freedom. One day, a handsome king walks into the prison. You overhear him say your name to the guard and give him something. The king catches your eye and smiles reassuringly.Reluctantly, the guard unlocks the door and motions you out. The king takes your hand and hugs you. “I paid for your freedom with the prince’s life,” he murmurs. “I want to forgive you for all you’ve done wrong and adopt you as my child. Will you accept my gift of freedom and forgiveness?”What will you choose?Thank you dear Lord that you paid for my freedom with your son Jesus’ blood. Help me not to take it for granted. Thank you for forgiving me for all my wrongdoing. Help me to live every day with your power.Throughout this day: If you have never accepted the King’s wonderful gift, confess your sins to him and be set free. Let them Off Your Hook (Ep.44)
Make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.- Colossians 3:13 NLT“If you give a hundred dollars, you will get a hundredfold return. God wants you and every believer to be rich!” The preacher pointed his finger then wiped his forehead.Years ago, my husband and I met at a church that had false teaching. We didn’t know it when we joined, but God used some resources to help us recognize the errors. I felt duped and tricked. I had to start my relationship with God all over again. Some leaders had said and done things to control us which I felt were unforgivable. Of course, God convicted me to forgive them. His word tells us to forgive anyone who offends us. It was easier said than done. The devil doesn’t want us to forgive. He wants us to hold on to resentment until it congeals into bitterness. And bitterness hurts us more than it hurts the offender. Don’t let the enemy get a foothold into your heart.God’s word says we must forgive others, and links it with remembering how much God has forgiven us. We can’t do it in our own strength, but only by faith through the power of the Holy Spirit. When you forgive, you are not saying what the offender did was all right. You are letting them off your hook. You are releasing them from your vengeance. God, the perfectly righteous and just judge, is the one who will take vengeance and repay.Lord God, help me to make allowance for other’s faults. Help me to forgive all who offend me. Thank you for forgiving me. Help me to obey you and forgive others.Throughout this day: Ask God to help you to be willing to forgive. Ask him to help you forgive each time the negative feelings toward someone come up. Ask God to give you a heart of compassion for them. Be Generous to the Poor
Be Generous to the PoorYou will be paid back by GodWhoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.- Prov 19:17 ESV“Hey Mom! Look at this!” My son’s eyes were bright. The cavernous room was filled with excitement and lots of new toys to be packed. My family joined with children and adults to fill boxes with Christmas gifts for local less fortunate children. Later we helped distribute them to families in an apartment complex. You might not start a soup kitchen, but you can serve at one. You might not be setting people free from human trafficking, but you can donate money toward an organization that does.We can’t do everything, but we can do something. We are small parts of the body of Christ but when we work together, we can accomplish great things for God. One of my favorite short prayers is “I can’t, but God, you in me can.”Dear Lord, thank you for providing me with more than enough. Please help me to be generous to the poor today. Thank you for rewarding me in heaven.Throughout this day: Take stock of how much you are giving to the poor. If it is some, ask God if he wants you to give or serve more. If it is nothing, ask him to direct you to the right ministries to help.Originally published on The Life on October 25, 2025. https://thelife.com/devotionals/be-generous-to-the-poorSubscribe to all my writing and podcast episodes at https://sheyvahrex.com/Contact me for prayer or discipleship tips at: [email protected] This is a public episode. A Restful Retreat: a devotion (Ep.42)
When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.- Romans 12:13 (NLT)(Listen for my naughty kitty meowing at the end!)I sat looking out the window at a snowy meadow, the evergreen trees along the edges competing with the deciduous ones to see who would be coated the most quickly by the falling snow. I looked back at the lovely white room, restful in its simplicity.I was in my mid-twenties tunneling through university on the opposite side of the continent from my parents. A dear couple at church offered to host me for a weekend away from the city in their beautiful country home. It offered me a much needed break away from everything and I gladly accepted. Now decades later, I might not remember their names or faces, but I will never forget their generosity toward me. And I know that the Lord will never forget either. Our verse for today reminds me of this couple. “When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.”You don’t need a lovely country home to practice hospitality. You just need a heart that wants to bless and serve people. Your furniture may not match, and your cups may be chipped but people will be blessed by your welcoming presence. Our family has hosted students from around the world, and it was rewarding to hear them express that they felt like part of the family. We are in the same family as our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us be on the lookout as to who needs a little bit of “home” comfort.Dear Abba, Thank you for welcoming me permanently into your family. Help me to be ready to welcome other needy siblings into my life and home.Throughout this day: Think about people you know at church and other Christian friends. Who could use a meal or a weekend away from their stressful life? Pray about what God would have you do and step out in faith to make it happen.Originally published October 7, 2025 https://thelife.com/devotionals/a-restful-retreatSubscribe to all my writing and podcast episodes at sheyvahrex.comemail me at [email protected]'m looking forward to hearing from you! From Filthy to Spotless
Episode 41But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.- Ephesians 4:20-24 NLTOriginally published on The Life.com on September 12, 2025. https://thelife.com/devotionals/from-filthy-to-spotlessDo you remember ever getting filthy? I recall crossing a log over a creek and falling in. I was muddy and dripping wet. I flung off those dirty clothes and put on clean ones as soon as I could. In the same way, in today’s passage Paul tells us to “throw off” our former sinful way of life. We are to “put on” our new nature. As believers who are trusting in Christ, we have been forgiven and set free from our old bad habits. We shouldn’t keep wearing that stuff! We have been “created to be like God” so we should “let the Spirit renew [our] thoughts and attitudes”. The enemy tries to get us to let down our guard and not be ready for a battle. It’s easier to watch one more video than to read the Bible and pray. We renew our mind and counter the lies of Satan by meditating on God’s Word. We have learned the truth from the Master, but we need to keep reminding ourselves because we so often forget.Dear Lord, please forgive me for wallowing in my past sins. Help me to cooperate with the Holy Spirit to renew my mind and walk in the freedom you paid for on the cross.Throughout this Day: Ask God: In what way do I need to throw off the old and put on the new nature? What specifically should I stop doing and start doing? You can email me at [email protected] or phone/text me so we can pray together. Just send me a message asking for my number. Rest for your Soul
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”- Matt 11:28-30 NLTEveryone who is or has been weary put up your hand. Yes, I see you young moms! I have been there. My second boy was born when my first was 28 months old. My third boy was born when my second was 18 months. Can you say, “babyhood was a blur”?We have all been weary for different reasons. Also, we all carry burdens, whether it is an unsaved adult child or a loved one’s ill health or debt or any number of other things that weigh on us.Jesus has the answer. He asks us to come to him. He will give us rest. We need to yoke (team) up with him and let him teach us. He is humble, not proud like us. He knows that apart from his Father he can do nothing (John 5:19). He also wants us to realize that apart from him we can do nothing (John 15:5). He desires for us to give our impossible burdens to him and rest with the light burden he gives us in exchange – of walking with him, trusting him and receiving his grace day by day. Now that’s a great deal!Dear Lord Jesus, Thank you so much for not leaving me to flounder around helplessly with my heavy burdens. Help me to give them to you. Thank you for taking them and helping me to learn to live restfully with your humble, gentle heart.Throughout this Day: Make a list of the burdens you are carrying. Think about projects, people, or circumstances. Apologize to God for trying to do it all alone. Receive his forgiveness by faith. Consciously lift each burden to the Lord Jesus and give them to him. Ask him to teach you how to rest in him.https://sheyvahrex.com/[email protected]://thelife.com/devotionals/rest-for-your-soul This is a public episode. Not Good Enough
The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.- Jer 31:3 NIVOnce I played the character of “Miss Good-E-Nuff” at church in a children’s musical based on Pilgrim’s Progress. That character felt she didn’t need the cross of Christ because she thought she had enough goodness of her own. It’s ironic because I have never felt good enough in anyone’s eyes, including God’s.Have you ever felt like you don’t deserve to be loved? By God or anyone else? I have felt that way. It’s taken a lot of time and healing to be able to truly receive love. Maybe I didn’t receive it because I was too busy believing the enemy’s lies that I must be perfect to deserve love. “Not good enough” is a label that has dogged me most of my life. Perfectionism is a vicious cycle and trap of the enemy. The devil doesn’t want us to rest on Christ’s goodness or receive God’s approval. He doesn’t want us to be free.God knows that we are not perfect and never will be while on earth. He chooses to love us and draw us to himself with faithful kindness. Jesus chose to live among us and make it possible for us to be holy in God’s sight, through his death on the cross. Let us choose to receive his love and love him back through the power of the Holy Spirit.Dear Father, thank you so much for your unfailing love. Help me to be free of lies and rest in the truth of your word.Throughout This Day: Listen to How Deep the Father’s Love for Usby Stuart TownendMy devotion Not Good Enough was originally published on thelife.com on August 20, 2025. https://thelife.com/devotionals/not-good-enoughThanks for reading Perfect King's Imperfect Princess! Rooted in John 15:12–15 (NLT), this episode reflects on Jesus' powerful display of sacrificial friendship and what it means to truly love others as He loved us.She challenges listeners to move from simply knowing about God's love to experiencing it deeply, and encourages us to become better friends by drawing closer to Jesus — the ultimate friend who laid down His life.📖 Key Scripture:John 15:12–15 (NLT):“This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.”✨ Highlights & Takeaways:Jesus' Love: He laid down His life not only for His disciples, but for you. Real Love or Enemy Tactics
Originally published on https://thelife.com/devotionals/real-love-or-enemy-tactics June 7, 2025Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.- Proverbs 27:6 (NLT)“Ouch!” That stung. My friend had just courageously told me about something I had been doing which had been offending her and others. While I didn’t enjoy hearing it, I knew she loved me and wanted to help me. Our verse for today reminds us that, “Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.”On the other hand, sometimes we are the ones who need to confront a friend who is edging too near a path to destruction. Will we say the hard thing, or will we avoid conflict because we “love” them? Real love tells the truth. Yes, you are uneasy with confrontation, but pretending everything is fine, just to keep the peace is evil. It is the work of an enemy, not a friend. You say you love them too much to talk to them about what you observe. In reality, you only love yourself, not them. The enemy of our souls wants to destroy us, so he relishes it when we cooperate with him to hide the hard truth from our friend. Remember how Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss?Put yourself in your friend’s shoes. Would you want to hear the truth if it were you? Although it may sting, the golden rule of Jesus Christ applies here: Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. (Matthew 7:12a)To make it easier, there are two key things to remember. First, pray about your friend and their situation. God will guide you as to what to say. Second, be filled with the Holy Spirit’s love in your heart for them when you approach them gently at a good time.Dear Lord Jesus, I need a friend who is willing to tell me the truth. Help me to be that kind of friend to others.Ask Yourself Do I have the kind of friendship that my heart needs? Ask the Lord Jesus to provide you with a great friend. Also ask him to make you a great friend to others. Thanks for reading Perfect King's Imperfect Princess! Going to the Top
But it is from Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God [revealing His plan of salvation], and righteousness [making us acceptable to God], and sanctification [making us holy and setting us apart for God], and redemption [providing our ransom from the penalty for sin], 31 so then, as it is written [in Scripture], “He who boasts and glories, let him boast and glory in the Lord.”- 1 Cor. 1:30-31 (AMP)“I’ve broken all previous sales records!”Once, a young man was very excited about joining a certain company. The leaders convinced him that other jobs and companies were inferior. They trained him to go door to door, selling insurance. He started winning competitions, trophies, awards, trips and promotions. He moved up higher and higher as he pursued prestige and money. Then he realized the people at the top didn’t care about him. It was all empty. His position was taking him away from time with his family. More importantly, it was robbing him of time to seek God. He left the company and spent a few years pursuing other opportunities before he started serving the Lord with his whole heart. He then sustained head injuries which resulted in migraines and fatigue. Now he brags about how good God is, how wonderful that God uses him to share the good news and disciple believers despite his weakness. The Lord hates pride and boasting in wealth. He wants us to acknowledge that it is he who gives us the power to get wealth (Deut. 8:18). God has given us salvation, wisdom, and righteousness. He set us apart and bought us back from the enemy. We can do nothing lasting apart from him. Let us not boast or brag about ourselves. Let us only tell others about our wonderful God and Savior Jesus Christ.Dear Lord, I’m sorry for being prideful and trying to do things without your help. I choose to boast about you.Throughout this day: Sing along with this old hymn which is a favourite of minehttps://youtu.be/C6yqC2sWcRc?feature=sharedOriginally published on https://thelife.com/devotionals/going-to-the-topMay 30, 2025 This is a public episode. No Place to Sleep? Ep.31
Do you know the feeling of being in water but you can’t touch the bottom? It's getting deeper and you can't swim. Your arm stretches up and splashes down. Your calls for help are muffled by the murky water in your mouth.Several years ago, we had so much debt due to a failed business, it felt like we were drowning. We thanked God that we had a house to sell. The only way out was to take the equity we’d built up in our house. God helped us to renovate and sell it with zero showings for a great price. We were able to pay off all the debt and heave a huge sigh of relief. The leftover money was not enough to buy housing large enough for our family of six, so we had to rent a house in an expensive market. Although we were a bit anxious about the possibility of becoming homeless, we thanked God for finally finding a place. When mice invaded the house and the landlord refused to help, at first, we were very unhappy but then we chose to thank God. Since then, our rental home has been wonderful.God tells us in his word to be thankful in all circumstances because it is his will. He doesn’t desire for us to wallow in negative thoughts and feelings, or to complain. He has reasons for us to thank him. One of them is that we enter his presence more easily when we thank him. Psalm 100:4 states: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! (ESV)Dear Lord God, Thank you for my life. Not everything seems to be awesome, but I choose to thank you because it is your will and your command. Help me to thank you for everything you have given me.Throughout this Day: Are you facing a difficult situation? Write down a prayer of thanks to God. Look for the good in the circumstance. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you. Make it a daily habit. After a couple months, you will have a new habit of being grateful to God which will transform your outlook.Originally published on www.thelife.com April 23, 2025. https://thelife.com/devotionals/no-place-to-sleepAnd of course, our main hub is on Substack. Are You Starving Yourself?
Hello and welcome back to Perfect King’s Imperfect Princess, the video podcast made from devotions by me, your host Sheyvah Rex. Although the videos are only available on Substack and YouTube. The other podcast apps have audio. This is Episode 28. My pen name, Sheyvah is the Hebrew word for the number seven which is the number of perfection in the Bible. Rex is Latin for king. God gave me this name after I searched high and low for a meaningful pen name. The name Sheyvah Rex lifts Jesus because he is our perfect king. No earthly king is perfect. Only our heavenly king Jesus never sinned. I am imperfect but I am his adopted daughter, so I am his princess. He wants you to be his prince or princess too. He loves you so much. Here is today’s devotion called,Are you Starving Yourself?Trying to survive and thrive by eating nothing?Originally published on the life.com March 4 2025. https://thelife.com/devotionals/are-you-starving-yourself Here is the Bible passage for today:But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.2 Tim.3:14-17 NLTContact me at [email protected] This is a public episode. E27-Perfect Love Expels Fear
Podcast Show Notes: Perfect Love Expels Fear - February 23rd, 2025Host: Sheyvah RexTheme: Understanding and experiencing God's perfect love to overcome fear, particularly fear of judgment.Scripture: 1 John 4:16-18 (NLT)"We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love."Key Points:God's Love and Trust:The foundation is knowing and trusting in God's immense love."God is love" - this is His fundamental nature.Living in God means living in love, and vice versa. As we live in God, our love matures and becomes more perfect.Confidence in Judgment:Trust in God's love removes fear of judgment.Confidence stems from Christ's sacrifice, not self-righteousness.Living like Jesus through the Holy Spirit allows us to face God with confidence.Reference to 2 Corinthians 5:10, and the day of judgement.Fear and Incomplete Love:Fear of punishment indicates a lack of full experience of God's perfect love.Distinction between God's disciplinary chastening (Hebrews 12) and fear of eternal punishment. The discipline from a loving father example used from Sheyvah's own life.Application:Reflect on God's love and place complete trust in it.Allow God to cultivate a deeper love within.Surrender daily to the Holy Spirit to become more like Jesus.Meditation on 1 John 4.Writing down a meaningful verse from the passage.Keeping that verse visible as a reminder.Call to Action:Spend time meditating on 1 John 4.Write down a verse that resonates with you and keep it visible.Contact Sheyvah Rex via email at [email protected] the website Sheyvahrex.com for contact information to text or call.Closing Prayer:Prayer for deeper understanding of God's love.Prayer for complete trust in God.Prayer for growth in love and Christlikeness.Prayer for the removal of fear of eternal punishment.https://thelife.com/devotionals/perfect-love-expels-fearBoys, do we need to have a little talk?” My husband smiled and nodded with his eyebrows raised and head tilted towards our young sons, who had been bickering forcefully about something inconsequential. They knew exactly what he meant and shook their heads, “No.”Prior to this, he had only needed to administer discipline a few times with each boy before they could be brought into line with just that one question and look. Our verses today speak of being afraid of punishment. The apostle John refers to the “day of judgment” which is when, as Paul wrote, “We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body (2 Corinthians 5:10 NLT). If, as John writes in today’s scripture, “we have put our trust in his love”, then “we will not be afraid on the day of judgment”. We will be able to face God “with confidence”; not self-confidence but confidence in his love which he showed by washing our sins away with the blood of Christ. He also enables us to “live like Jesus here in this world” through the power of the Holy Spirit. The punishment mentioned in this passage is not referring to when God disciplines us to help us become holy. The kind of discipline my husband used with our children is mentioned in Hebrews twelve where you can read more about this chastening from God.But, if we are afraid of eternal punishment in hell on the day of judgment, that means “that we have not [yet] fully experienced his [complete] perfect love.”Dear Lord, Help me know in my heart how much you love me. Help me to put all my trust in your love. Thank you that you live in me and that my love for you becomes more complete as I continue to live in you. Thank you for removing my fear of eternal punishment and replacing it with confidence in your eternal salvation. Thank you for making me like Jesus more and more as I surrender to you daily.Throughout this day: Spend some time meditating on this passage in I John 4. Write out a verse that is especially meaningful to you. Keep it where you will see it often.please contact me at [email protected] or check my website for the number you can text or call. Love is an Action Word
Hi, I'm Sheyvah Rex, and welcome back to Perfect King's Imperfect Princess.Today I'm sharing a devotion with you that was originally published on thelife.comon Sunday, February 16th, 2025. https://thelife.com/devotionals/love-is-an-action-wordDear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.- 1 John 4:7 NLTI slap the pot down on the crumb-covered tablecloth and call for the fourth time. “Dinner time! It’s getting cold! Please set the table!” Family members trickle in one by one and get an earful of my frustration.Am I cooking dinner because I love my family? Or am I doing it just because I must, or it’s expected of me? You can go through the motions of doing the right thing, but with the wrong attitude. We can only love people truly and wholly with the engine of God’s love roaring in our hearts. Jesus said, “For apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5d). Why am I trying to do this task without him?Today’s verse says, “Let us continue to love… for love comes from God.” We need to bask in the truth of God’s love for us before we try to pour it out on others. Every mundane task such as cooking, cleaning, diapering or doing laundry can be done for the love of God, and because of his love. Love is an action word. As we come to know God better through his word, we will trust and love him more. This will enable us to love others with our actions by the power of his Holy Spirit. The enemy tries to catch us off guard, so watch out for his attacks. Ask God to help you treat every person with the love and respect we would treat Jesus.Dear Lord, I’m sorry for trying to do so many things without you and your love fuelling me. Thank you for forgiving me. Please fill me up with your love in my heart. Thank you for proving your love by giving your son to be killed for me. Thank you that he is alive in me, and I can rely on him instead of my own feeble love strength.Throughout this day: Ask yourself: Am I loving others with God’s love or my own strength? So that's it for that devotion.Thank you for joining us.And, you know, I'd love to hear your feedback on this.If you're listening on Substack, you can leave a like or a comment or a question. You can send me a private message, prayer request. And if you're listening on a different app,for example,Spotify or YouTube, you can also email me at [email protected]'m not too active on social media, but I do post these podcast links once in a whileThank you.God bless you.You can email me at [email protected] or phone/text me at 1 (778) 725-8813. Famine Fruit
Podcast Show Notes: Perfect King's Imperfect Princess - Episode: Famine Fruit: Choose to Shout When There is No FruitEpisode Summary:In today’s episode, I’m sharing my devotion "Famine Fruit: Choose to Shout When There is No Fruit," originally published on The Life on November 8, 2024. We dive into the powerful message from Habakkuk 3:17-19, where the prophet chooses to rejoice in God despite his barren circumstances. I reflect on my own struggles and disappointments with a failed tomato garden as a metaphor for times when our efforts don’t yield the results we hope for. Even when there seems to be no fruit in our lives—whether that’s emotional, spiritual, or material—we are called to choose to rejoice in the Lord and trust in His strength.Scripture Reference:Habakkuk 3:17-19 (AMP):"Though the fig tree does not blossom, and there is no fruit on the vines, though the yield of the olive fails and the fields produce no food, though the flock is cut off from the fold, and there are no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will exult in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength; He has made my feet like hinds' feet and makes me walk on my high places."Key Takeaways:- Choosing Joy in Trials: Even when life feels barren or we face personal "famines," we can choose to rejoice in the Lord. Just like the prophet Habakkuk, we can declare our trust in God's sovereignty and strength.- Trust in God’s Provision: God doesn’t promise a life free of hardship, but He promises His presence, strength, and a spiritual highlight through every trial. It’s in our moments of lack that God can be our greatest source of strength and courage.- Letting Go of Fear: When facing potential difficulties, whether emotional, physical, or spiritual, we can release our fears and anxieties and trust God to carry us through. His grace is sufficient for every challenge.- Releasing Burdens: When we face difficult seasons, we can choose to give our burdens to God and receive His joy, peace, and strength in return.Personal Story:I share the disappointment I felt after my first attempt at gardening. Despite all the care and hope I poured into my tomato plants, I was left with only one misshapen green tomato. In the same way, we sometimes work hard toward something, only to feel like there’s no fruit to show for it. But even in these seasons, we can choose to rejoice in God’s presence.Reflection:- How have your trials brought you closer to God?- What burdens can you hand over to God today? Let go of anxiety and choose His peace.Closing Prayer:Lord, help me take one day at a time. Thank you that I don’t need to fear the future trials I may face. Help me choose to receive your peace in exchange for anxiety. Help me choose to praise you no matter what I may lack now or in the future. Thank you that I will always have you to be my strength when nothing seems to be going right.Get in Touch:If you’d like to connect, share your thoughts, or need prayer, you can reach me at:- Website: (https://sheyvahrex.com)- Email: [email protected] Phone: Feel free to text or leave a message.I’d love to chat or pray with you!Thank You for Listening:I’m so glad you joined me for this episode. Is God powerful enough to save those people?
You can watch the video or switch to the audio in the Substack app. The audio is also available on many podcast apps such as Spotify and YouTube. Transcript: Hi there, this is Sheyvah Rex in another episode of Perfect King's Imperfect Princess, and this is a devotion called, The Good News is for Everyone, Everywhere. Is God powerful enough to save even those people? Our verse today, (this was originally published on thelife.com August 15th,2024, which is today as I'm recording, and it is also my husband’s and my anniversary, our 26th. Happy anniversary to us. Thank you.)Okay, so our verse today is, Now all glory to God,who is able to make you strong, just as my good news says. This message about Jesus Christ has revealed his plan for you Gentiles, a plan kept secret from the beginning of time. But now, as the prophets foretold, and as the eternal God has commanded, this message is made known to all Gentiles everywhere, so that they too might believe and obey him. All glory to the only wise God through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.Imagine you're out to share the gospel at a park in the suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, which is home to immigrants from over a hundred nations. You ask a man, "What do you think about Jesus Christ?"He squints and spits."Jesus is for white people."You could ask him, "I'm curious as to why you would say that?"If he's willing to engage in conversation, what could you say to his idea that Jesus is only for white people?Jesus Christ is for everyone. God created all of us different physically, but all in the image of God. Jesus commanded us to go into all the world and preach his good news to all people, not just to those who look the same or believe the same. There were people from Africa following Jesus even during the New Testament times in the Bible, such as Simon of Cyrene and the Ethiopian eunuch. Some of the early church fathers were from North Africa, Tertullian from Tunisia and Athanasius from Egypt. Most of the current new converts to Christianity come from Asia and Africa.*We may think, oh, that ethnic group believes in such and such a religion. They won't be open to hearing about Jesus. This demonstrates a lack of faith, unbelief in Jesus' ability to change hearts.Romans 16.25-27, which I quoted earlier from the New Living Translation,is Paul's conclusion to the New Testament book of Romans and a short hymn of praiseto God for the excellence of his plan to save us. All glory goes to God, not to us.God deserves the glory because he can make us strong and steadfast in trust in him.while we are naturally weak and prideful. It is very exciting that God opened salvation through Christ to all people everywhere. Anyone might believe and obey him. Many of us have people from various nations living among us in our own cities and towns. We have the opening to share Jesus' love with people from around the world. Jesus came to rescue us from sin and to give us a peaceful relationship with God. The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. 2 Peter 3.9 NLT. Let us take the opportunity God is giving us with boldness from his Holy Spirit.Pray first for the darkness and lies of the evil one to be dispelled by God and forthe people to receive the light of his truth.Let's pray.Forgive me, Dear Lord, for prejudice, for writing certain people off, for not persevering in prayer, and for not believing that you are able to draw them to trust and obey you. Forgive me, Jesus, for fear of people's reactions or of conflict. Give me your courage and the words to share your good news. Help my friends, family, and neighbors to receive your light and not believe the devil's lies. Open their minds to hear and understand the gospel. Convict them of sin. Bring them to repentance. Thank you for choosing to partner with us in prayer to see your will accomplished. In Jesus' name, amen. **Throughout this day, make a list of friends, family, and neighbors for whom you could pray and put it in your calendar daily. See what God will accomplish through your prayers.* Many ideas in the first paragraph came from this article, Christianity,A White Man's Religion, by Lakeia Bradley, posted March 1, 2023. https://www.therebelution.com/blog/2023/03/is-christianity-a-white-mans-religion/** And some of the concepts in my prayer are from a book by Dr. Alvin Vandergriend,Praying God's Heart, Prayers That Make a Difference, Chapter 16, Praying Your Friends to Christ. Thanks for joining me today. I hope you have a great day. God bless you.And let me know if you have any prayer requests because I would love to pray with you and for you.So send me an email or a direct message.Have a great day.God bless. Fighting for Captain's Control
Fighting for Captain's Control: Who is Your Captain?Bible Verse: 1 Peter 5:5b, 7-9a (NLT)Key Point: We need to surrender control to God and trust Him to be our Captain.Show Notes:The passage starts with a call for humility. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.Analogy of a boating trip:The speaker wants to be in control of the boat (representing life). The speaker struggles to surrender control and feels anxious.Eventually, the speaker chooses to trust God.Realization: The desire for control stems from pride. The devil exploits our weaknesses (desire for control) to disrupt our peace. We need to:Humble ourselves and confess our tendency to take control.Recognize Satan as our adversary and resist his attempts to control us.Trust Jesus Christ as our Captain and surrender our worries to Him.Closing Prayer:A prayer asking God for forgiveness for wanting our own way and strength to submit to His will.Originally published on https://thelife.com/devotionals/fighting-for-captains-control May 20, 2024Subscribe to all of Sheyvah's writing on Substack.https://sheyvahrex.substack.com/abouthttps://www.youtube.com/@SheyvahRex This is a public episode.
