[PREVIEW] Exclusive Audio: Pastor of Any Kind
On this episode of Protestia Tonight for February 28, 2024, we discuss how the "Law Amendment" to change the SBC Constitution to ban woman pastors will only be successful if we return to a biblical definition of "pastor." In the PT VIP, we discuss how John MacArthur's application of jurisdictional authority remains incomplete.David's thread regarding the Law Amendment:The failure of evangelicalism to biblically define "pastor" has been an issue far longer than I've been alive, and is an ongoing symptom of the ministerial novelty that pervades our churches. Today's pastors face unprecedented "mission creep," where, far from the corporate Bible teaching role and doctrine guardianship that defines the office, they are expected to be everything to everyone. They are CEOs and salespeople. Administrators and nannies. Pastors are now largely valued by their practical, numerical utility rather than as brothers gifted to fill the unique role of teachers and overseers of worship. They are like the team coach or quarterback, under constant pressure to perform for the "fans" in the pews. The most "successful" pastors in this new paradigm are the "vision casters," and by vision, I don't mean the execution of Christ's simple, costly Commission, but the "fresh and different" (market differentiated) "brand" the church employs to "reach" (please) a target demo. Pastors are not only expected to do everything, they are (at least tacitly) expected to "serve" (please) everyone ("servant leadership," anyone?). Pastor training in the academy is heavily focused on "leadership" (process, management) to the detriment of doctrinal content. Today, most congregations would struggle to define a pastor's job. Even the most biblically literate would likely talk in vagaries about "spiritual leadership" and revert to some ill-defined combination of "give us a king" hierarchy and "the pastor works for us" consumerism. "Pastor" has been commoditized. It is subject to careerism and the worldly preferences of spiritual consumers. Many burn out. The truly gifted often quit or never begin, leaving effeminate institutionalists or self-promoting narcissists continuing the man-pleasing downgrade. In response, the pastorate has been recast in professionalism, with fancy degrees, guilds (conferences), and institutionalism far beyond the scriptural model. These band-aids keep pastors "protected," but at the cost of isolation and degradation of their doctrinal calling. To make the problem worse, nearly every job we now demand of pastors (admin, organization counseling, visitation, even teaching) is also performed by non-pastor staff. In practice, this leaves "ruling" (running the organization) as the only practical pastoral distinctive. This separation of title from function not only causes confusion (If Steve is the 'pastor' of social media, why can't Donna be called 'pastor' of food ministry?), it fails to teach the created reasons the teaching and doctrinal guardianship in the church is left to men. Why this TLDR thread in response to the Law Amendment? Because placing a gender restriction on an undefined office solves almost nothing by itself. Churches who call non-pastors "pastor" can change the term. Those who let women teach men can simply not call her "pastor." Apart from a return to a biblical definition of "pastor" (teacher, preacher, guardian of doctrine rather than do everything, please everyone, vision-casting CEO), banning women from serving as a "pastor of any kind" (while a good first step) is merely a rhetorical victory. It is wrong for churches to deceptively use the title "pastor" for anyone and every staff member on whom they want to bestow authority, and this is often done to virtue signal to the feminist culture. I support the Law Amendment, but it must be followed by further clarity. Pastor/elder is an office for men gifted to teach doctrine and set a mature example to follow. It is not defined by the litany of other non-teaching, non-doctrinal jobs modern pastors end up doing. We must not invent our own ecclesiology in response to what the world wants. Stop demanding pastors do everything under the sun, yet hold them accountable for what they are called to (which is equip the saints for ministry, not govern BTW), let them know you support their vital and specific calling, and stop using the term "pastor" for anyone else.

Audio: Moral Imperative
On this episode of Protestia Tonight for September 26th, we go live to discuss the fallout from the G3 Conference and answer sincere questions about the state of the anti-woke schism occurring on the issue of Christian Nationalism. Here is David's related Twitter thread:Refusing to discuss/examine ethnicity (especially its moral components) as distinct from genetic similarity plays into the hands of godless critical theorists pushing moral hierarchies based on racial groups. The left wants to tie morality to skin color. Don't fall for it. Ethnicities are distinguished by many factors, some moral and some neutral. Moral factors include things like laws, religious practices, human rights, etc. Neutral factors include cuisine, aesthetics, genetic similarity, and location (practical realities of time and space). "Wait! Nothing is morally neutral! It's not if, but which!" Yes, the overall orientation of a nation, culture, or ethnicity may be definable by its moral disposition, and even our commitment to neutrality on certain matters is itself not morally neutral (think Xtian liberty). Yet, as Christians, we subject everything in our lives to Christ. This includes all aspects of whatever ethnicity we find ourselves in - rejecting what opposes Him, promoting what glorifies Him, and practicing grace towards the "neutrals" (of which there are many). At the level of God's sovereign will, nothing is morally neutral. Yet, in pursuit of God's glory, He allows good, evil, as well as intrinsic neutrals. Our moral action is not in view of God's sovereignty even as our hope relies on it. Our moral action is captive to the Word. Legalism assigns moral imperative to things God's Word does not, and a thing's presence within the scope of God's sovereignty (an existing culture/ethnicity/nation) is not defacto proof of that thing's goodness nor our moral responsibility to maintain it as it exists. Evangelism ceases to exist if there is an imperative to maintain ethnicities as they are presently comprised. Practically or rhetorically making genetics (a moral neutral) an intrinsic part of ethnicity (making ethnicity morally neutral) neuters our transformational mandate.
