Glycemic Index, Acne, Gummies, and Long Boarding

In this episode we unpack how the glycemic index of foods and meals you eat can trigger oily skin, an upstream trigger of the acne cascade that is rarely spoken of, but has a significant impact. Balanced meals aren't just for weight management and bodybuilding, they impact your skin! Tangents in this episode include references to fish oil gummy recipes you can find at rootdeepnutrition.com and how learning to longboard is healing my inner child that was wounded by growing up with acne. Enjoy!Musical segments provided by David Koltai.

Healing Acne May Start with Your Gut Barrier

The skin is the last thing your body will try and heal, so it can be a red flag that something is off in your body. In this episode of Radiant Roots Clear Skin, we explore the gut barrier. Your gut barrier is the barrier between you and the outside world. If it isn't functioning properly, you've got inflammation, malabsorption, and this can show up on your skin. We'll get in to situations where this can arise, nutrition to support its healing, and things to look out for that could be compromising your gut barrier health.Music by David Koltai.

BCMO1 a Hidden Root Cause for Acne

In this episode of Radiant Roots: Clear Skin, we go beneath the surface to explore one of the most overlooked root causes of acne: how your genes influence your ability to use vitamin A.I’m breaking down the science of nutrigenomics in a way that actually makes sense: what SNPs are, how they can impact your health, and why variations in the BCMO1 gene may affect how efficiently your body converts beta-carotene into active vitamin A (retinol). We’ll connect the dots between vitamin A and skin health, including how conventional acne treatments like topical retinoids and isotretinoin work, and why they can be both powerful and potentially risky. I also share my own experience with genetic testing and what it revealed about my vitamin A metabolism. If you’ve ever felt like you’re “doing everything right” but still struggling with your skin, this episode will help you understand why personalized nutrition matters, and how to start thinking about your skin from a root-cause, functional perspective. You’ll walk away with a clearer understanding of:• The difference between beta-carotene and retinol• How BCMO1 gene variants can impact conversion efficiency• Why vitamin A plays such a central role in acne• When more is not always better (and why caution matters with supplementation)🎧 This episode also features original music by David Koltai, woven throughout to create a more immersive listening experience. If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to follow the podcast and explore more resources at Root Deep Nutrition and Wellness.Disclaimer: This podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for personalized medical or nutrition advice.

Hello from the Radiant Roots Clear Skin podcast!

Welcome to my new podcast, Radiant Roots Clear Skin, where we get into root causes of acne to help you heal from the inside out and be your most radiant self. I'm introducing myself a bit here and letting you in on a little about my story with acne. Struggling with acne from a young age seeded a desire in me to understand why. Now I can look back and share what I've learned, and what I continue to learn. In this episode I touch on some of my discovery about how my individual genetics may have made me more predisposed to developing acne. While genetics related to acne are not something assessed in conventional acne treatment, conventional acne treatments do utilize vitamin A, both topical and internal. Genetic variations on vitamin A metabolism could be an underlying risk factor for developing acne.
