Glitches abounds! Both here and in the regular world. To clear up any confusion, if I’ve ever stated that I picked these songs for Radio Clang from Jesus Christ’s own record collection, I meant to say they’re from one of my doctor’s record collections. It was a simple mistake. All my doctors wear flowing robes, have halo glows and look like Dennis Wilson circa 1979.Thanks for listening! I debated whether to take a line from a Wadsworth poem. Then I debated which Wadsworth. William or Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. They both wrote about the spring season. I thought I remembered them well. I did not. Old college electives be damned!Second thoughts swayed me to snag this communication’s teaser line from the title of New Order’s second single. I’ll spare you a conversation about all the record’s pressing variants. The smell of spring is in the air. Fresh and fragrant. Walking by a Bradford pear tree. It looks so pretty and lush in full bloom. Then the trees smell of rotting fish and dirty socks attempts to harsh out the day. I could go into a tirade about how planting them everywhere was a total a*****e of American landscaping. I'll spare you that at this time as well.Seasons. Radio Clang’s contribution to alternative programming for Super Bowl LX? We’re up against some stiff competition if so. For example, an alternative to the obviously woke Puppy Bowl, Newsmax and OAN will be simulcasting a version today hosted by Kristi Noem and Mike Huckabee’s son. Kid Rock will be appearing at halftime wearing Cruella DeVille’s coat. He’s had it altered by having a bald eagle with a catalytic converter in its talons embroidered on the back. Thanks for the support. For the number of times I have watched Verity Den live in 2025, I haven’t taken a lot of video footage of them. Then again, that goes for most live music I see. I got to shows to see bands play live and snap of few shots on whatever film camera I’ve taken along, not really to “watch” the majority of a set through my phone screen. I usually just go for capturing a minute here or there of what’s happening up on stage for something to show friends who weren’t there or to throw up on social media.Enjoying Clangoring. Consider becoming a benefactor by being a paid subscriber. It’s only 5 buckaroos a month.Whenever I catch Verity Den, I especially get caught up in the swirling sounds they make, enjoying the psychedelic storm of soft snowfall and glittery solar flares than I am thinking of pushing play on a camera app. This is exactly what happened on August 23, 2025 when the Carrboro, NC based combo played the benefit show for the Spider Bags Dan McGee. There were long moments during their set when I was in a trance and would just snap out of it for a minute or so to snap the shutter on the Praktica LTL (one of my old faithful pieces of gear I have talked about many times before at this point on Clangoring) that was hanging from my shoulder. Here are some of those. The film used was Lomography Color Negative 800, which is believed to be a repackaging of the 800 ISO film Kodak makes for their one-time use Funsaver cameras. I may end up seeing Verity Den again tonight at the Cave in Chapel Hill but that depends on how much my workday takes out of me today and/or whether that winter weather advisory we’ve been told to watch actually happens. Sure, there will be times ahead when I can see them again but each time just seems so magical, ya know?Social Clang: insta; bsky Get full access to Clangoring! at clangoring.substack.com/subscribe

It‘s Thanksgiving morning in the USA. Giving thanks for what we have has been questionable for decades. The slope is super slippery. Maybe the slipperiest it's ever been. There’s an obvious theme that runs through parts of this “very special episode of Radio Clang. A “very special” part is that I planned it, recorded it and scheduled it at a particular time. Subscribe. Free ones and benefactor levels are both greatly appreciated.Putting it together stirred some emotions. Travel. Dinner. The Great Lakes. Basements.Another “very special” part of this episode is that in Radio Clang No. 13, I closed the show with a comment about one of our cats, the Ripperpotamus. He loves turkey. He loses his mind over a turkey being in the oven. He sets up camp in the kitchen. If you walk by the kitchen, he will be there. He will remind you. He has been doing this his entire life. He is 15 years old. He is like the Eddie Van Halen of cats that love to eat Thanksgiving turkey. If you are seeing this before 4pm EST on (US) Thanksgiving Day 2025 and want to see the Ripperpotamus patrolling the kitchen in anticipation, his heart filled with glee and his jerkbag yet somewhat endearing curmudgeonly ‘tude turned up to 10, hit me up at Bluesky or here. In the late 80s, I had a job at a radio station in a rural Michigan town. Yes, the station did air hog and livestock reports. Those came from a network so I never had to read them. I DID have to read more localized grain and produce reports on the air often. The main crop in the few counties the station served was beets. Especially sugar beets. In the autumn, there was always talk of squash, carrots and kale but beets, man. BEETS! A root vegetable that’s the agri-heartbeat deep in the Mitten’s state thumb. Consider becoming a free subscriber. Even better? Become a paid subscriber and you can then say you're a benefactor of the arts. With a format described as “variety”, the station also aired things like Swap Shop. Think Facebook marketplace but instead of posting it online, people would call in to talk about what they are selling. Consider some of the things people post on Marketplace and how some seem delusional, ridiculous or simply sad. Now imagine those people calling into a radio station five days a week, trying to sell a shed full of old bottles or some Midwest backroad beaten rust bucket that hadn’t been started in decades as a classic “perfect for a project” car. The station did play some music but it was usually something like Christopher Cross or Randy Travis.Once before reading the local grain and produce report, I joked with the station manager that I was thinking about using the Go-Gos “We Got The Beat” as a bumper for it. Subscribe! He admonished me. “The song has NOTHING to do with beets”, then stressed the station's purpose was to inform and entertain, “not to play new wave music.” The song was around seven years old at the time. Whatever his grudge was towards “new wave music”, it must have been serious. I did not bother to find out why.Beets are coming to the end of their season in Michigan. In North Carolina, they still have about a few weeks left before the last big harvest of the year. You can find the Go-Gos song anywhere on your own. Persimmons. After many attempts to understand their appeal over the past few decades, I still don’t get them no matter how they’re utilized. An astringency that makes the inside of the mouth feel like it’s quickly growing hair. The tannin content is the cause. Too much of that can also mess up your stomach with lumps and blockage. Consider becoming a free or paid subscriber to Clangoring!Persimmon season is ramping up in North Carolina. The most common species that grows here is the American Persimmon. It’s Labor Day weekend here in the US (and Canada too. I cannot leave out the neighbors across the river of town I grew up in.) A time to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the hard working people. For many, it means a day off, cookouts, beer and etc. For some, it means a day off and prime time to be inconsiderate to people in service industries and retail who don’t have the day off. Rude and entitled motherfuckers who think they're something special and have a “how dare they make MY holiday in any slight way slightly inconvenient?” attitude. If you’re lucky to have the day off and need to run to the store to get hot dog buns or whatever, don’t be a dick. It’s really not that hard to do. Clangoring! does not charge a subscription fee BUT paid subscribers do help pay the bills. Consider it. It's only $5 a month.Because of an internet rumor that started floating around this Friday, many this weekend, working or not, thought they had another reason to celebrate. That ended up being fallacious. You ever noticed that some hip hop cats will do mic check even though the track has already started? And though they’re at a perfect volume in the mix, sometimes they tell the person in the booth to turn the mic all the way up as loud as it will go. And never once have I ever heard the mic then turned up to some loud, clipping and distorted mess. It stays the same in the mix. That always makes me feel like I’m not getting everything the guy was going for. Dropping some sick bars that they really wanted be all blown out sounding and the engineer was like “Nope. Not in my mixing booth.”I just got new computer but much of the gear I have is still cobbled together. The mic mix in this episode is all over the place. Yeah, it’s been a while. Many factors. Life, man. Lemme tell ya. Maybe later. Meanwhile, okra is currently in season.Clangoring is free. Equipment ain’t cheap. Time is tight. In a stretch of 100°F days combined with the heavy as a ton humidity North Carolina is notoriously known for, I chose to stay inside my climate-controlled abode on a solo day off from work. Enjoy Clangoring? Subscribe! It’s free. Want to support Clangoring in our continuing adventures? Become a sponsor. Being a sponsor costs less than a pint of beer a month in most places.Staying inside meant I could finish up transmission number eight of Radio Clang. Going outside would have meant changing shirts a few times because they’d all get drenched, and I'm not into smelling like I'm on day three of some jam band festival. Plus, I have to go to the laundromat to wash those shirts. Staying inside saves me from lugging more laundry around from place to place too. I started to work on episode 5 of Radio Clang a couple of weeks back. I had all the ducks in a row. All the bricks properly stacked. Hatched chickens counted. I was so proud of my time management that I even scheduled a break time for a breather. A walk. A diversion. Then that became a shiny object leaving this episode hanging.“Last week” in this episode was actually a couple of weeks ago from the day this was uploaded. The glow is still warm in those words I said though. The last third was finished today. The same sentiments as well. And as a bonus, here’s Lewsberg live at the Cave in Chapel Hill, NC on Sept 24, 2023 (the show a Clangoring presentation; the video from my phone.)On this episode of the fake radio show, here’s what you’ll hear:TYVEK – What Were We ThinkingLEWSBERG – Going PlacesCHILDREN MAYBE LATER – Bob Dylan’s BirthdayThe KINKS – Get Back In LineFLORRY – Cowgirl In A DitchBLUES AMBUSH – Horse NoisesWIREHEADS – Life After WinterC. In Episode 4 of Radio Clang, I remind you of a Clangoring presentation happening toward the end of September and remind myself of something to go see this Thursday.Hopscotch is happening this coming weekend over in Raleigh. My budget did not allow me to swing a night show package and my straight gig keeping me from the day shows. I found out a few days ago that Florry are playing a free day show at Slim’s on Thursday. Florry’s album The Holey Bible is wobbly hazed out rural rock at its baked best. Way too rowdy to slap on a cosmic country comparison. Yeah, there’s a lot of Neil and Crazy Horse happening, but it goes deeper into other scruffy weird weeds. Everyone I’ve turned onto the album has become just as smitten with it as I have. I checked my schedule for this week, it just so happens I have Thursday off. I don’t get to get over to Raleigh regularly but I’m totally trekking from Durham to see me some Florry! The Clangoring presentation is Sunday, Sept 24th at the Cave in Chapel Hill.A bare essence of Lewsberg’s sound is braininess. It sounds clever and cynical. Not an eggheaded braininess looking down from high towers and judging everyone else as rubes. It’s the braininess of the common person, their day to day live cope. Often set to a clock of a motorik rhythm, the Rotterdam band may seem austere at the surface. Spending just a couple of minutes with their music though, that veneer cracks, revealing a ton of dry humor about the human condition and adoration for a jangled chug the Velvets invented and bands like the Feelies reinvented. Lewsberg released their first record, a 7inch EP, in 2017. The band’s newest album, Out And About, is set for release on 12XU toward the end of September. This is their first US tour. They will stop here on their way to Gonerfest the following weekend.Playing with Lewsberg will be the antsy pulse punk of Durham’s Three Body Problem and the gauzy garage gaze of Chapel Hill’s Entrez Vous.Anyway, the playlist:The B52s – Nip It In the BudSTEF + THE SLEEVENS – Give My Regards To The Dancing GirlsCOREY HANSON – Horsebait SabotageJOHN WESLEY COLEMAN – GratitudeENTREZ VOUS – Sham TrialLEWSBERG – An Ear To The ChestFLORRY – Hot WeatherDAN MELCHIOR BAND – No CultureANIMAL PISS – Jesus Got Under My SkinTha RETAIL SIMPS – The RiverSocial Clang: fb; insta; tw(x); bsky; spout Get full access to Clangoring! at clangoring.substack.com/subscribe

Do you have your own personal list of the best lunkheaded rock riffs of all time? Y’know, the kind of riff where the louder you turn it up, the even more you think “It’s making me turn into a total oaf and it feels awesome!” A riff that makes you think like whoever came up with it either has rocks in their head or has taken a few big hits to the head from rocks. I’m talking about jams like Hair Of The Dog by Nazareth and pretty much any AC/DC song. I think it’s obvious I have a list like that. I mean, I started this episode off with an embodiment of such to me. I’m one of those songs with a complete “did I just get outsmarted by a caveman” thud and, as a bonus, something in it that those of the Birdman flock will recognize.
