S2 Ep2021: LIVE LIFE BETTER Ken Grimes, Pinellas Suncoast Fire Chief & New Book Tin Box Heroes

In this episode of Live Life Better, host Nanette Wiser talks with Ken Grimes, a man of courage and wisdom about his new book, Tin Box Heroes. It is a raw and powerful exploration of the lives of first responders, their sacrifices, and the resilience of the human spirit. Ken Grime is the Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue Chief with a formidable history of courage and a journey that he unflinchingly reveals to help others.Ken Grimes is a Fire Chief, author, and nationally recognized leader in emergency services with nearly five decades of experience. He has led disaster response efforts across the country, including Hurricane Katrina, and served in executive roles in one of the largest air medical systems in the world. Today, he leads Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue District and focuses on leadership, resilience, and the long-term impact of service on first responders. When the weight of saving lives becomes too heavy to bear, who saves the rescuer? In Tin Box Heroes, Ken Grimes delivers a gripping, deeply human memoir that exposes the hidden cost of heroism. As a veteran flight medic and emergency response leader, Grimes spent decades inside “tin boxes” — ambulances, aircraft, and command centers — racing against time to save others amid hurricanes, medical crises, and chaos. But when compassion collided with exhaustion, the mission to save everyone else nearly cost him his own life, he was forced to confront the truth: even heroes break.  With vivid detail and emotional honesty, Tin Box Heroes takes readers behind the flashing lights and into the silent aftermath — where trauma, guilt, and resilience wage war within the human spirit. What begins as a story of service becomes a testament to recovery, hope, and the courage it takes to ask for help.Raw. Unflinching. Redemptive. Tin Box Heroes reminds us that strength isn’t the absence of pain — it’s the decision to heal anyway.#kengrimes #pinellassuncoastfireand rescue #livelifebetter #firstresponders #mentalhealth #tinboxheroes #nanettewiser #stpete #stpetefl  #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete  #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep2018: ONE PLACE, MANY VOICES Deb Carson with Gerald Notaro, USF St. Pete Librarian Emeritus

(Airs 5/19 1:10 pm) In this episode of One Place, Many Voices - Pinellas County, series Deb Carson talks with Gerald Notaro, USF St. Pete librarian emeritus about USF, Historic Kenwood (he launched the organization) and the history of gay life in St. Petersburg.Gerald A. Notaro, April 24 Interview by Deb CarsonABOUT GERALD NOTARO By the time Buffalo, New York native Gerald “Jerry” Notaro found his way to PinellasCounty, and his forever home in St. Petersburg, Florida, he had endured more than hisfair share of snow and cold. Hailing from a huge, close-knit Italian family, relatives andparents who made their way southward to Florida had to do little convincing for Jerry toeventually follow his dreams to Florida, but not before he earned an undergraduatedegree from SUNY Buffalo, and a masters from Canisius College in the new field ofmedia studies, a new concentration in library science.. After five years at a small Baptistcollege in Indiana, Jerry was more than ready for his next chapter. In 1985, he came toboth Tampa Bay and to the nascent St. Petersburg campus of USF as an openly gayman at age 35 in 1985. For the next nearly 30 years, Jerry was an integral part ofUSFSP’s academic as well as the campus’ community growth. Indeed, Jerry’s trainingand experience in the new technology-based field of media library science helpednationally elevate the campus’ Nelson Poynter Library as cutting edge. But Notaro’scontributions went beyond. On campus and beyond into the community, Jerry’sgrassroots work in establishing LGBTQ initiatives including St. Pete’s very first PRIDEcelebrations, justice and human rights initiatives, support (and often participation as askilled performer himself) of Pinellas and St. Petersburg’s burgeoning arts and culturewere, throughout the decades, are legendary and remain today passionate interests. forJerry. Just prior to retirement, Jerry donated his rich collection of photographs, documents and ephemera which tell a huge part of his historic campus and communitycontributions are part of the Poynter library’s special collections known as the “Gerald A.Notaro Collection.” In retirement, Jerry proudly holds the title of USFSP LibrarianEmeritus. and remains a passionate advocate for the community he helped to build.🎤Welcome to our America 250 celebration and our One Place, Many Voices podcast series powered by Heritage Village, with support from a Florida Humanities grant.   Listen anytime, anywhere to all the One Place, Many Voices podcasts on RadioStPete as we bring Pinellas County history to life through conversations with the people about the places and stories that define us. S2 Ep2016: HISTORICALLY ST. PETE St. Petersburg Museum of History Rui Farias: Seminole Indians

(5/11/2026) In this episode of Historically St. Pete, Rui Farias - executive director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History, talks about the history of one of Florida's indigenous people, the Seminole Indians. Here is his Brief History of the Seminole People in Florida. (Seen here, Billy Bowlegs and his three girls.) The Seminole people have been an important part of Florida history for more than 300 years. Their story of survival and success is remarkable, and their unique culture endures today. The ancestors of today’s Seminole people migrated to Florida in the 1700s andearly 1800s. These Indians came primarily from Alabama and Georgia, and althoughthey were simply known as “Creeks” to the British, they spoke different languages andlived in independent towns. Different bands of Creeks established towns in north Floridaand traded with both the British and Spanish. After 1765, all Florida Indians werereferred to as “Seminoles.” The name comes from the Spanish word cimarrón whichmeans “wild” or “runaway.” However, a more fitting interpretation may be “free.”The first half of the nineteenth century was tumultuous for Florida’s Seminoles. The U.S. military waged three wars against them; in fact, the Second Seminole Warresulted in the majority of Seminoles being removed to Indian Territory (present-dayOklahoma.) Less than 200 survivors retreated deep into the Everglades and the militaryended its hunt for them. The Seminoles lived in virtual isolation in and around the Everglades for manyyears. They lived in open-sided structures called chickees, which were adapted to theswampy environment. They survived by hunting, gathering wild foods, and growingcrops like corn, pumpkins, and potatoes. As white settlers began moving to southFlorida, they established trading posts. The Seminoles sold animal hides and pelts to thetraders and in turn bought cloth, guns, tools, and food staples. This way of life lasted into the twentieth century. The great influx of settlers and drainage of the Everglades hastened the end of thetrading post era. As a result, some Seminoles entered new tourist attractions in Miami.Seminole exhibition villages were a large part of the tourist scene in south Florida fromthe 1920s to the 1960s. At these villages, men wrestled alligators to the delight ofcrowds. Both men and women made crafts such as dolls, baskets, and carvings to sell tothe tourists. These seasonal jobs in the villages provided important income, and theexhibition nature of the attractions enabled some of the traditional ways to continue.Seminoles maintain involvement in Florida’s tourism industry today.A typical scene at tourist villages included women sewing colorful patchworkclothing. This colorful style of clothing is one of the most recognizable aspects ofSeminole culture today. Seminole women invented patchwork around 1917. To makepatchwork clothing, different colored strips of cloth are sewn together, then cut andreassembled to make rows of designs. The rows are sewn together horizontally to formthe garment. Hand-cranked sewing machines allowed women to experiment with manydesigns. Designs became more intricate over time. The Seminole people worepatchwork clothing, and sold it to tourists. Patchwork clothing is still part of theSeminoles’ traditional dress today. In the 1890s, the government attempted to address the question of where theSeminoles should live by setting aside parcels of land. These parcels eventually becamereservations. The first three established were Big Cypress, Dania (now Hollywood), andBrighton. The land was unimproved and there were no incentives for the people to move. The Civilian Conservation Corps-Indian Division, a program of the New Deal, employedSeminole men to build roads, fences, wells, and make other land improvements on thereservations. Seminoles slowly started moving onto the reservations in the late 1930s. Acattle program was also started at Brighton Reservation in 1936, and it is still a successstory today. In the early 1950s, Seminole leaders, to avoid being cut-off from governmentfunding, decided to organize as a federally-recognized sovereign tribe. The SeminoleTribe of Florida was recognized in August 1957. The Tribe operates under aConstitution, Bylaws, and Corporate Charter. Its governing body consists of an electedfive-member tribal council. An elected board of directors oversees the federally- chartered corporation, Seminole Tribe of Florida, Inc. The Tribe today hasapproximately 3,200 members.  After many years of economic struggles, the Seminoles achieved their goal to beself-sufficient and not reliant on the federal government for money. Their sovereigntyallows the business ventures like casinos that permit them to be financially independent. In fact, the Seminole Tribe of Florida is one of the most successful Native Americantribes in the country, and it has paved the way for other tribes’ involvement in gaming.Importantly, because of their new-found wealth, the Tribe is able to provide for itsmembers, especially in health care, housing, employment, and education. The Seminole people of Florida have persevered despite the many social, political, and economic pressures brought against them. They have proven to besuccessful at adapting to new circumstances while still preserving important aspects oftheir culture.#ruifarias #historicallystpete #stpetersburgmuseumofhistory #seminoleindians #stpete #stpetefl  #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete  #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep2011: ARTS ALIVE! St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung: Peter Tush, The Dali

Peter Tush has been with the Dalí Museum, in St. Petersburg, for 39 years and change. Tush was a college student when he started as a gift shop clerk and docent. Carrying a Masters in Art History, today he is Curator and Senior Interpreter.  What that means is, Tush is among the elite few who are eminently qualified to discuss not only the late, great Surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, for whom the museum is named, but the history of the institution, the collection and the building itself.Today on Arts Alive!, Bill DeYoung is focused on two new exhibitions: The Architecture of the Dalí, which opened May 2, and Dalí in America, which will be unveiled Saturday. Tush is involved, as you might expect, with both of them.  The Architecture of the Dalí traces the evolution of the facility, which began in 1982, seeded with the expansive collection of art owned by Reynolds and Eleanor Morse of Cleveland, Ohio (they were also friendly with Dalí himself). The City of St. Petersburg agreed to house the collection, and in 2011 the present building, designed in whimsical Surrealist style by Yann Weymouth, opened to the public. It is estimated that 10 million visitors have come through the front door since ’82.  This exhibition also takes visitors inside the Dalí’s upcoming $65 million expansion.Dalí in America, Tush explains, follows the eccentric Spanish artist’s relationship with the United States, its people, artists and (especially) its pop culture. It was a symbiotic bond that began with Dali’s first stateside visit in 1934.#billdeyoung #thedali #petertush #daliinamerica

S2 Ep2004: ARTS ALIVE! St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung & Author Paul Wilborn

In this episode of Arts Alive!, host Bill DeYoung welcomes Paul Wilborn into studio to talk about his new novel, The Everlasting Life of Charlie Wall, published by St. Petersburg Press.  The Palladium theater’s executive director has for years been something of a triple threat – he’s also a singer and a piano player, and a former journalist who enjoys the challenge of writing fiction. In the case of The Everlasting Life of Charlie Wall, it’s fiction (in that it’s a made-up story) about a real-life historical figure (notorious Tampa mobster Wall ran a cornucopia of illegal rackets in untamed Ybor City in the 1930s and ‘40s).  Wilborn's second novel (following 2022’s Florida Hustle) is lighthearted and comedic.  Until it gets serious. “People forget that Tampa had open gambling and open houses of prostitution, on Franklin Street in downtown,” Wilborn says. “In Ybor City, you could just walk in and all that stuff was there – and the cops looked the other way.”Although his process involved deep research into the area’s lawless past, Wilborn fabricated a narrative set in 1985, in which the octogenarian ex-outlaw desperately wants to believe the world hasn’t forgotten about him or his long-ago exploits. He re-creates the atmosphere of the mid-century era, from the working stiffs to the upper class and the men (like Charlie Wall and the Trafficante crime family) who preyed upon them all.In Wilborn’s book, Wall (who was actually murdered in 1955) is an eccentric, intelligent old crook whose heart, while definitely not made of gold, is not as black as history has painted. #paulwilborn #novel #author #billdeyoung #stpetecatalyst #artsalive #stpetepress#stpete #stpetefl  #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete  #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep2003: SUNSCREEN FILM FESTIVAL Matthew Wiatt, Saber Documentary Director

(Airs 5/1/2026) The Sunscreen Film Festival opens today in downtown St. Pete, at the AMC Theaters with events at Green Light Cinema, Lounge & Kitchen as well as Imagine Museum. In our ongoing series of interviews, host Nanette Wiser talks to documentary filmmaker  Matthew Wiatt and producer/wife Katie who co-wrote the film, Saber. Saber is a feature-length documentary that follows a passionate group of LED saber combat athletes as they train for the Saber Legion World Championships in Las Vegas. But this isn't just a story about competition or fandoms, it's about the power of shared passions to bring people together. At its heart, Saber is a film about connection. It's about a group of people who might never have crossed paths, finding friendship, support, and a sense of belonging through the iconic lightsaber. In a world that often feels divided, Saber is a reminder that community can be found in the most unexpected places and that sometimes, the family you choose is the one that saves you.The Sunscreen Film Festival, held in St. Petersburg, Florida, has significantly marked its presence as a pivotal celebration of independent cinema within the Tampa Bay area since its inception in 2005. Founders Tony Armer and Derek Miner initiated this festival with the vision of creating a platform that not only showcases independent films but also supports the burgeoning talents of local and regional filmmakers. Over the years, this vision has not only materialized but flourished, with the festival evolving into a much-anticipated annual event.#sunscreenfilmfestial #matthewwiatt #katiewiatt #indieatlanticfilms #documentary #saberfighting #powerofconnection #nanettewiser #stpete #stpetefl  #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete  #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep1997: PET TIPS Best Dogs for Cat Homes & Tips

In this episode of Pet Tips, host Nanette Wiser shares some tips for introducing a dog into a cat home, and making it work. Consider which dog breeds have the potential to be good with cats, as some breeds may not be very suitable for a household with felines!  Every individual from each breed will be different and will possess different behavioral traits. So, you can never guarantee a pup from a certain breed will have a particular characteristic. Therefore, we would always suggest introducing your pets to each other properly – ideally at a young age and monitor them closely. You should always make sure your cat has the space to get away from your pup if they want to, as cats are generally less sociable than dogs, and will need time to themselves – especially if they feel overwhelmed or threatened. For more advice on this, it’s best to speak to your vet. #pettips #dogs #cats #

St. Petersburg’s Arts Organizations Unveil the “St. Pete New Works Festival” – A Two-Week Celebration of Creative Evolution for 2027!In this episode of Beauty & The Burg, host Cindy Stovall chats with Avery Anderson,Arts Passport Director  about the 2027 St. Pete New Works Festival. "This festival is about proving that the 'City of the Arts' isn't just a tagline—it’s a commitment to the messy, beautiful process of creation," says Avery Anderson, Founder of Story Keepers and Festival Organizer. "We aren't trying to build one singular organization to replace what’s been lost nationally; we are showing that through collaboration, St. Pete is a collective sanctuary where artists can take risks and find their voice." Dates: March 25 – April 4, 2027 Locations: freeFall Theatre, The Studio@620, Off-Central Players Content: World Premieres, Florida Premieres, Staged Readings, Professional Networking Website:Storykeepers.org 👉In an era where national incubators for new plays are shuttering, four St. Petersburg based non-profits are doubling down on the city's reputation as a "City of the Arts" by launching the St. Pete New Works Festival. Running from March 25 through April 4, 2027, this inaugural event marks a historic collaboration between: Story Keepers, freeFall Theatre, The Studio@620, and Off-Central Players. The festival is designed as a two-week "living laboratory" for the performing arts, featuring a dense schedule of new play readings, world premiere productions, Florida premieres, and curated networking events. Unlike traditional festivals, this initiative aims to show that St. Pete isn't just a destination for finished work—it is a collective home for artists at every stage of the developmental journey.👉The St. Pete New Works Festival is a necessity for the growth of the arts here in St. Pete," says Alan Mohney Jr., Managing Director of Off-Central Players. "We are thrilled to collaborate with freeFall, Story Keepers, and The Studio@620 to bring this festival to life and bring new stories to our community."👉"At The Studio@620, our mission has always been to say 'Yes' to the artist," adds Erica Sutherlin, Artistic Executive Director of The Studio@620. "By partnering with our peers for this festival, we are amplifying that 'Yes' and ensuring that St. Petersburg remains a beacon for diversity, innovation, and the next generation of great American stories."👉“We are thrilled to participate in this project which creates an open format for organizations to show work that simply needs to be new,” says Eric Davis, Artistic Director of freeFall Theatre. “This allows us to bring one of our major season projects into the festival rather than needing to bow out of a project with more demanding thematic constraints for instance. It should be a fun and varied mix of events.”#cindystovall #beauty&theburg #theater #performingarts #nanettewiserblog #stpete #stpetefl  #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete  #dtsp #downtownstpete
