The Feast of Unleavened Bread continues to hold immense significance for us today. The timeless themes of freedom, spiritual purification, and humility reflect a commitment to doing what is right in the sight of the Lord.

In the context of the Passover Seder and Christian tradition, the “cup of restoration” or the fourth cup represents the promise of God’s ultimate restoration and the fulfillment of His promises, which Jesus himself stated he would drink anew with his followers in the kingdom of God. 

When Scripture talks about our need for redemption it basically has three things in mind. It’s redemption from sin, it’s redemption from death, and it’s redemption from the law.

The significance of the “Cup of Deliverance” for the Hebrews, meant that they were no longer under the yoke of Egyptian tyranny.  In the broader sense, the deliverance from bondage represents deliverance for all oppression – sin, selfishness, self-directed living, and worldliness.  God’s desire for His followers is to be free of these bondages.

The opening celebration of Passover incorporates four cups, which link the unfolding story of the exodus from Egypt. It is the calling of each and every child of God to be sanctified—set apart—to God. The First Cup of Passover, the Cup of Sanctification or Separation, reminds us of this crucial starting point of our salvation.

The story of Passover is a story of redemption; it is a story we are meant to personally contextualise. Looking at the ancient symbols of Passover is an opportunity to experience the story of Jesus’s death, resurrection, and the promise of his return in  light of the Hebrew Scriptures.
