I'M DANGEROUS TONIGHT with Stuart Ross

Our April Monday Afternoon Movie is taking us on a trip to the early 1990's and it sure is loaded with some big, dangerous names.   Joining Sam Pancake today is fellow creator and podcast host, Stuart Ross. Stuart hosts Another Gay Podcast, and runs the Gay Horror Club. Directed by Tobe Hooper and inspired by a story by Cornell Woolrich, I'm Dangerous Tonight (1990) is a supernatural horror thriller starring Mädchen Amick, Corey Parker, Anthony Perkins, R. Lee Ermey, and Dee Wallace. Originally produced as a made-for-television film for the USA Network, it centers on a cursed ceremonial cloak discovered inside an ancient altar, a garment said to awaken the darkest instincts in anyone who wears it. College student Amy O'Neill, already burdened by family responsibilities and caring for her elderly grandmother, unknowingly brings the evil into her life after purchasing a trunk from an estate sale connected to the artifact. Drawn to the blood-red fabric hidden inside, she transforms the mysterious cloak into a glamorous dress for a school dance. The moment it is worn, jealousy, desire, and violence begin to spread through everyone it touches. Love what you hear? Want to show your support for Sam Pancake & The Monday Afternoon Movie? BLACK NOON Watch-along with Sam Pancake

It's a rare treat for the main podcast feed: A watch-along movie adventure! Heads up, there's a showdown at the ol' spooky corral coming your way. We're headed to the old west with this one, so put on your chaps and spurs and let Sam Pancake is take you along for the ride.  *]:pointer-events-auto scroll-mt-[calc(var(--header-height)+min(200px,max(70px,20svh)))]" dir="auto" data-turn-id= "request-WEB:72c2d2fe-e0cd-4c98-988e-a9823486b9cb-1" data-testid= "conversation-turn-4" data-scroll-anchor="true" data-turn= "assistant"> Black Noon (1971), directed by Bernard L. Kowalski and starring Roy Thinnes, Yvette Mimieux, Ray Milland, Lynn Loring, and Gloria Grahame, is a haunting Western horror tale set in the classic backdrop of the desert frontier. The story follows Reverend John Keyes (Thinnes), a struggling preacher, and his devoted wife Lorna (Mimieux), as they journey west in search of a new start. When their wagon breaks down, they are rescued by the residents of an isolated settlement known as San Melas. Welcomed with unexpected generosity, the couple finds temporary refuge among the town's inhabitants, including the quiet but alluring Deliverance (Loring) and the imposing patriarch Joseph (Milland). As John begins preaching to the townspeople, his sermons are met with extreme enthusiasm, seemingly revitalizing both his faith and his sense of purpose. However, Lorna's health begins to mysteriously deteriorate, and subtle signs of unease creep into their new surroundings. Strange rituals and an almost hypnotic devotion among the townsfolk suggest that something far more sinister lies beneath their hospitality. Love what you hear? THE SEDUCTION OF GINA with Tipper Newton

Just when you thought that Sam had covered all the troubled teen and young adult made-for-TV dramas, he comes at you with this ace up his sleeve about the dangers of gambling. Don't ask him to actually play any casino games though, as the only Kings and Queens he knows are the ones in drag. Joining Sam Pancake today is Tipper Newton, an actor, filmmaker, and musician. She is best known for her roles in The Mindy Project, The Guest Book, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. She most recently starred in the clever film Fuck Your Son!, and plays shows with her band Color TV. Links below to dive deeper. The Seduction of Gina (1984) is a made-for-TV drama directed by Jerrold Freedman that explores how a moment of innocent fun spirals into a life-altering obsession. In the film, Valerie Bertinelli stars as Gina Breslin, a young, recently married woman feeling restless and unfulfilled while her husband is occuppied with his demanding medical internship. Seeking excitement and a way to break up the monotony, Gina agrees to try her luck at the blackjack tables during a trip to Lake Tahoe. What starts as beginner's luck quickly turns into a dangerous compulsion as the thrill of gambling consumes her. As Gina's wagering escalates, so do the stakes in her personal life. She begins to gamble away her trust fund, strains her marriage to David Breslin (played by Fredric Lehne), and entangles herself with Keith Sindell (portrayed by Michael Brandon), a smooth casino associate whose intentions are ambiguous at best. Along the way, supporting performances from Ed Lauter as Carl and Dinah Manoff as Mary help paint a fuller picture of Gina's unraveling world. Love what you hear? MADAME SIN with Brandon Johnston

Welcome to 2026! The Monday Afternoon Movie's latest season continues. Our featured film today stars a couple of legendary icons of the screen, big and small. It's also completely wacky and an all over the place bargain bin James Bond clone.  The 1972 film, starring Bette Davis and Robert Wagner, centers on Madame Sin, a wealthy, brilliant, and deeply manipulative woman who runs a private organization that trains people to be elite criminals. She recruits individuals with specialized skills—pilots, scientists, strategists—and molds them into a secret force she can control. Her operation is polished and almost glamorous, but underneath it's all about power and domination.  A former British intelligence officer (Wagner) who's been burned by the system, is lured into Madame Sin's world. At first, the offer looks tempting: money, prestige, and a chance to use his talents again. But he soon realizes that Madame Sin's ambitions go far beyond crime for profit. She wants leverage over governments and plans a massive, high-stakes scheme that could destabilize international politics. Joining Sam Pancake today is actor, writer, and 90-second historian Brandon Johnston. THE GATHERING with Alonso Duralde

Do you hear the bells and festive music? Feel that cold weather nipping at your toes? Smell the gingerbread and peppermint? I guess that means only one thing: Meika, cue up the Ed Asner clips because the yearly Sam Pancake Holiday Special is upon us once more and we're all out of Paul Lynde specials to cover. Today's episode takes us on a sentimental and heartwarming journey through ABC's 1977 Hanna-Barbera produced made-for-tv film The Gathering, starring legendary actors Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton. Also of note, the movie was written by Academy Award winner James Poe, who gave us the screenplays for Around the World in 80 Days and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Ed Asner plays a grumpy and blunt middle-aged executive who finds himself facing a terminal illness diagnosis. He is forced to confront the prospect of leaving behind the life that he has built and the family he loves but has often taken for granted. In the end, The Gathering becomes more than just a family reunion. It's a cathartic and emotional journey, one that teaches the importance of love, forgiveness, and the fleeting nature of time. With his characteristic stubbornness and unflinching honesty, he shows his family the value of coming together when it matters most, even as he faces his own mortality. From everyone at Sam Pancake Presents: The Monday Afternoon Movie, we'd like to wish you all a very merry holiday season. Yes, this is a non-scary episode of the podcast, unless you find the Rankin/Bass stop-motion animation slightly unsettling, and many of us do. GHOSTWATCH with Roz Hernandez

Welcome to a special Halloween edition of Monday Afternoon Movie, in which we discuss not a hilarious made-for-TV gem that is enjoyable on a camp level but instead a TV movie that is actually scary. We speak of GHOSTWATCH, a 1992 BBC broadcast that took many an at-home viewer by surprise when it first aired. To say too much would ruin a first-time viewing experience, so Sam — joined by returning guest Roz Hernandez! — will not be giving away the whole plot. LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED TO ROSEMARY'S BABY with Stacie Ponder

You might think that if anyone was going to follow up the iconic film Rosemary's Baby with further tales of the plucky Woodhouse family, they would do so with the skill and thoughtfulness that made the original so celebrated. Well, you woulnd't be correct, because the 1976 ABC TV movie LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED TO ROSEMARY'S BABY tosses out the prestiga of the original for the wackadoo kookiness that you'd find in any made-for-TV horror flick of the era. Fortunately for Sam, his guest for the exploration of this sequel-that-should-not-be is none other than Stacie Ponder, of the celebrated Final Girl blog and more podcast episodes about scary stuff than we can count. FALLEN ANGEL with Margaret Cho

Warning: This episode (and this TV film) concerns child pornography and might be upsetting for some listeners. What's this? A return to the "teen trauma" wave of TV movies? YES! And it's all thanks to this week's guest, Margaret Cho, who made the suggestion that Sam look into this real doozy of a telefilm. FALLEN ANGEL stars Melinda Dillon as the mother of a tween who runs afoul of child pornographers. So yeah, this is heavy, but Sam and Margaret treat it like a real-life horror film… because it is. REVENGE! with Peaches Christ

Will Shelley Winters finally have her revenge on Sam Pancake and the Monday Afternoon Movie?  Now that we're back to the horror genre, Sam has invited iconic filmmaker and confirmed cult leader Peaches Christ into the fold to talk about REVENGE!, the 1971 ABC movie of the week starring Sam's nemesis, Dame Shelley Winters, Bradford Dillman, and Stuart Whitman.  In what very much feels like a precursor to the classic Stephen King story Misery, a vigilante mother will do anything to get revenge against the man who she believes is directly responsible for her daughter's untimely death. Will her plot to destroy him go too far?  Will Peaches' perspective on all things Shelley finally convince Sam to show her some love? OMG OMG OMG Bruce Vilanch! Okay, now that that is out of the way... Part two of the Monday Afternoon Movie holiday special has arrived, and it has brought with it not frankincense and myrrh, but definitely two wise men in Sam Pancake and THE legendary Bruce Vilanch. We just had to include him in any conversation revolving around the Star Wars holiday special as he was one of the writers of this "timeless" classic. 😉 Bruce also touches on some of the other greatest hits of his career, such as Mahogany, The Paul Lynde Halloween Special, and a plethora of 1970s and 1980s television variety shows with Donnie and Marie and the Brady Bunch. THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL with Tom Ford (Part 1)

It wouldn't quite feel like the holidays without a Monday Afternoon Movie holiday special. For that special, why not cover the infamous pinnacle of all holiday variety shows, The Star Wars Holiday Special?! The whole crew is begrudgingly and contractually back to bring a truly forgettable viewing experience to your late 1970's television sets. Mark Hamill is here as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford is back as Han Solo, and everyone's favorite space Mom Carrie Fisher is back as Princess Leia Organa. Unfortunately, they are not the main characters in any way. That title would belong to Lumpy & Itchy, the family of Chewbacca, who spend large portions of the movie grunting away  about Life Day without the assisitance of subtitles. Then, just for fun, toss in a bevy of celebrity guests like Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, Art Carney, Dihann Carroll, and Jefferson Starship. If you're a Star Wars fan and you've never seen it, you really should at least once... okay, maybe not.  Happy holidays (and Life Day!) from Sam Pancake and everyone at Monday Afternoon Movie & TableCakes! AMITYVILLE: THE EVIL ESCAPES with Joshua Tonks (Part 1)

Ok y'all- for my Halloween episode(s) this year, I decided to take us on a trip to that fated Dutch Colonial Mansard-Roofed House of Horror with the Glowing Demonic Window/Eyes. I had never seen the fourth installment and first TVM iteration of the frenetic "Amityville Horror" franchise, 1989's AMITYVILLE HORROR: THE EVIL ESCAPES aka AMITYVILLE 4: THE EVIL ESCAPES aka A HIDEOUS GAY LAMP IS KILLING MY FAMILY. Y'all. Y'all!??! Y'ALL. The good news is that you can watch this jaw-dropper most anywhere: Tubi, Plex, Pluto, FreeVee, AMC+, Roku, YouTube, the CVS app, in the settings dial of a new Whirlpool dryer, if you stare long enough into a slightly spoiled container of macaroni salad from that questionable snack kiosk at the airport. The better news is that it is one of the most ridiculously hilarious, nonsensically kookoo-boots "movies" I've ever had the pleasure of covering on the pod. The best news: my guest is the delightful and deeply knowledgeable cutie- smartie Joshua Tonks, who I was a big fan of from my fave scary movie podcasts from the UK, "Evolution of Horror" and "Brain Rot." Luckily he was here in LA visiting from London this week and I snagged him in person for my 🎃 special! Yeehaw! Part 1 of 2. MAZES AND MONSTERS with Meika Grimm (Part 2)

Time to drop back into the satanic panic of 1982 with the second half of the Tom Hanks led TV film Mazes and Monsters, also starring Wendy Crewson and Chris Makepeace. Joining Sam again is TableCakes own Meika Grimm, editor of this very podcast. She has also edited a number of our sister podcasts, including Smart Mouth. She is an L.A. based digital creator, musician, and audio/video engineer.  We return to the story with our lead Robbie experiencing vivid dreams of his missing brother Hall. After increasingly concerning behavior, including staying in character even when they aren't playing the game, he sneaks out of a party to go on a solo mission to find his long lost brother. His friends follow the clues he's left behind, Scooby Doo style, leading to our climactic finale in the heart of New York City.    Part 2 of 2. MAZES AND MONSTERS with Meika Grimm (Part 1)

You're going to want to bring out the 20 sided dice, blacklights, and Mountain Dew for this one. We're staying in the year 1982, but after a string of teenage wasteland themed episodes, it's time to get back to the show's roots. That right! Horror! Specifically the Tom Hanks led film Mazes and Monsters, also starring Wendy Crewson and Chris Makepeace. Joining Sam today is TableCakes own Meika Grimm, editor of this very podcast. She has also edited a number of our sister podcasts, including Smart Mouth. She is an L.A. based digital creator, musician, and audio/video engineer.  Our film follows 4 college aged kids from New York who have formed a bond around a fantasy table top board game loosely based on Dungeons & Dragons. When the group decide to take the game into the local caves to add an extra level of excitement to the adventure, it leads to one of them going missing and the rest wondering what is real and what is fantasy. You will definitely want to watch this one, if only for the amazing 80's sweaters on display. Part 1 of 2. ABOUT THIS SHOW

Actor and comedian Sam Pancake sits down with friends famous and funny to discuss the surreal, silly and nonetheless star-studded made-for-TV movies of the 1970s. It's a loving look at baffling not-quite-feature-length flicks that often aren't on DVD and have largely been lost to time.
