Willing But Not Yet Ready to Quit: Why You Keep Going Back
Ep 80 - Many people reach a point where they want to change, yet find themselves stuck in the same patterns. In this episode of Say Goodbye and Imagine, Rose Ann Forte explores the critical gap between willingness and true readiness—and why understanding that gap can change everything. Drawing from both personal experience and her work with clients, Rose Ann explains why repeated attempts to quit often lead to frustration and shame. She reframes the struggle through both Scripture and neuroscience, showing how patterns form in the brain and why this does not mean you are broken—it means your brain is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Through powerful biblical insight, including John 8:34, Romans 12:2, and 1 Timothy 4:15, this episode reveals that transformation is not a single decision but a refining process. Just like testing gold or running clinical trials, real change requires repeated testing, awareness, and intentional practice over time. Listeners will walk away with a renewed sense of hope, a deeper understanding of their patterns, and a practical pathway forward—one that removes shame and replaces it with clarity, truth, and the possibility of lasting freedom. In this episode, Rose Ann Forte addresses a common but often misunderstood experience: wanting to quit a habit or behavior but not being able to follow through consistently. She explores the difference between willingness and readiness, and why recognizing this distinction can remove shame and accelerate real change. Through a combination of biblical truth and neuroscience, Rose Ann explains how repeated behaviors create neural pathways, why relapse does not mean failure, and how preparation—not just action—is the key to lasting transformation. Key Topics Covered: The difference between desire and readiness Why repeated attempts to quit are part of the process The role of neural pathways in habit formation "Psychological slavery" and John 8:34 Romans 12:2 and the refining process of transformation The Transtheoretical Model of Change Why action alone doesn't work for most people The three keys: awareness, exposing the lie, and choosing a new path Key Scriptures: John 8:34 Romans 12:2 1 Timothy 4:15 Core Takeaways: Wanting to change is not the same as being ready to change Your brain is not broken—it is operating as designed Transformation requires testing, practice, and repetition Shame delays progress; awareness accelerates it Preparation is the foundation for lasting change Reflection Questions: What if going back to the pattern isn't a failure, but evidence of how your brain has been trained? What is the repeated thought or belief that shows up right before the behavior? If this pattern disappeared, what would you truly want your life to look like? Why We Wait for Pain to Change: The Story of Manasseh
Ep 79 - Why do we wait until life falls apart before we finally change? In this episode, Rose Ann Forte explores the powerful story of Manasseh in 2 Chronicles 33—a king whose life was marked by extreme rebellion, yet ultimately transformed through repentance. Despite repeated warnings from God, Manasseh ignored truth until severe consequences forced him to see clearly. This episode unpacks the deeper pattern behind that behavior. From both a biblical and neuroscience perspective, repeated actions become automatic, making it difficult to change even when we know better. Often, it takes pain to interrupt those patterns and create awareness. But what if you didn't have to wait for the "brick wall"? This episode challenges you to recognize early warning signs, interrupt destructive patterns sooner, and respond to God before consequences take hold. No matter how far you've gone, restoration is always available—but the decision to turn can happen today. Key Takeaways We often don't change when we hear truth—we change when pain gets our attention Manasseh ignored God's warnings until consequences forced awareness Repeated behaviors become automatic in the brain, making patterns hard to break Pain interrupts patterns—but awareness can interrupt them earlier You don't have to wait for a "rock bottom" moment to change God responds to a repentant heart with mercy and restoration Early awareness and intentional response create a pathway to freedom Faith and Neuroscience Insight The brain becomes efficient at whatever we repeatedly do. Over time, behaviors—whether helpful or harmful—become automatic. Even when we know something isn't right, that knowledge alone may not be strong enough to interrupt the pattern. Pain often becomes the interrupter. But awareness can be trained before consequences occur—creating space to choose differently without needing a crisis moment. Reflection Questions Where in your life have you been continuing a pattern you already know is not aligned with what God is asking of you? What are the early signals—thoughts, feelings, or behaviors—that show up before that pattern takes over? What would it look like for you to respond differently this time, not waiting for consequences, but choosing to turn now? Made in God's Image: Reclaiming Authority Over Life-Interfering Behaviors
Ep 78 - In this special episode of Say Goodbye and Imagine, Certified Choose Freedom Coach Anthony Covington steps in to share a powerful reflection on identity, authority, and transformation through God's Word. Rooted in Genesis 1, the episode explores what it truly means to be created in the image of God and how life-interfering behaviors can distort that identity, leaving us feeling stuck, defeated, and out of alignment. Anthony walks listeners through the deeper meaning of dominion and authority, reframing it as God-given agency. When we allow substances, habits, or distractions to take control, we move out of position and experience the consequences of that misalignment. But through daily engagement with Scripture and intentional practice, we can return to the identity God originally gave us. Drawing from passages like Genesis 1:26–31, Ephesians 2:10, 1 Peter 1:6–7, and James 1:22–24, this episode highlights the importance of not just hearing God's Word, but living it. The Transformed by His Promises devotional becomes a practical tool for renewing the mind, reinforcing truth, and creating new patterns that align with both biblical wisdom and how the brain forms habits over time. If you've ever felt like you're saying the right things but not living them, this episode offers a clear path forward. You'll be challenged to reflect on who you are, what you truly want, and how practicing truth daily can lead to lasting transformation. Listen in and begin stepping back into the life God designed for you. Rooted in Genesis 1, this episode explores: What it means to be created in the image of God How life-interfering behaviors pull us out of position Why practicing Scripture daily leads to real transformation The connection between biblical truth and rewiring the mind Anthony shares how engaging with Scripture is not just reading words, but entering into relationship with God, and how that relationship restores identity, purpose, and direction. Scriptures Referenced Genesis 1:26–31 Ephesians 2:10 1 Peter 1:6–7 James 1:22–24 Key Takeaway The problem isn't just behavior. It's position. When we return to who God says we are, our lives begin to align with how He designed us to live. Life Has Direction: Are You Paying Attention to Where You're Going?
Ep 77 - Life always has direction. The real question is not whether we are moving — the question is whether we are paying attention to where we are going. In this episode of the Say Goodbye and Imagine Podcast, Rose Ann Forte explores wisdom from Proverbs 4:25–27, a passage that speaks directly to the direction of our lives and the awareness we need to stay on the path God has for us. Most people do not wake up one day and intentionally choose a destructive path. Instead, we slowly drift away from God's direction through distraction, habits, and small compromises that seem harmless in the moment. Rose Ann shares a personal story about a recent season of physical setbacks — from a hernia emergency to surgery, recovery, back pain, and COVID — and how keeping her focus on God changed how she responded to adversity. Instead of falling into discouragement or self-defeating thoughts, she chose perseverance and trust in God's plan. This conversation explores the connection between spiritual awareness, the condition of our heart, and the direction of our life. Rose Ann also explains how Scripture aligns with neuroscience. The thoughts and behaviors we repeat form neural pathways that influence the choices we make and the direction we take. You will also hear how the Armor of God connects to this concept — the belt of truth guiding the mind and the breastplate of righteousness protecting the heart. Stay until the end for three reflection questions and a prayer designed to help you examine the direction your life is heading this week. Scripture in This Episode Proverbs 4:25–27 "Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil." Related passage discussed: Proverbs 4:23 "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." Why Good Intentions Fail: A Biblical and Neuroscience Perspective on Galatians 5
Ep 76 - We all feel it. That internal tug-of-war between what we want in the moment and what we know is right. In today's episode, Rose Ann explores Galatians 5:17–18 and the internal battle between the sinful nature and the Spirit. Why are good intentions often not enough? Why does willpower fail us? And what does it actually mean to live Spirit-led instead of self-reliant? Drawing from her own journey of choosing sobriety and renewal, Rose Ann unpacks: The difference between willpower and Spirit-led transformation How repeated behaviors create neural pathways that feel like truth Why dopamine-driven relief can slowly form psychological slavery The connection between John 8:34 and modern neuroscience How Romans 12:2 reveals the process of testing and renewing the mind This episode will help you recognize where you may be choosing short-term relief over long-term alignment—and how to begin forming new pathways rooted in obedience, wisdom, and grace. Scripture Covered Galatians 5:17–18 Psalm 51:5 John 8:34 Romans 12:2 Key Takeaways The internal battle is normal. Awareness removes shame. Relief is not the same as righteousness. Repeated behaviors shape the brain and reinforce patterns. Transformation requires testing, not just trying harder. Spirit-led living changes desire, not just behavior. Reflection Questions Where do you feel the internal battle between personal relief and Spirit-led righteousness? What behavior have you repeated that now feels normal but may be pulling you out of alignment? What would it look like this week to pause and ask the Holy Spirit before responding to stress or triggers? The Danger of Thinking We Know Better - Trusting God Over Our Own Judgment
Ep 75 - In this episode of Say Goodbye and Imagine!, Rose Ann Forte explores 1 Samuel 15:22 and the powerful confrontation between obedience and self-justification. When King Saul adjusted God's instruction to fit what "appealed to him," he revealed a pattern that is still common today — redefining wisdom according to our own desires. This episode examines: Selective obedience Rationalization and self-deception The danger of trusting personal judgment over God's instruction How modern culture normalizes compromise The neuroscience behind self-preservation and justification Rose Ann connects biblical wisdom with brain science, explaining how cognitive dissonance and reward-seeking pathways influence our decisions — and how obedience restores clarity and peace. The Treasure of God's Wisdom - Receiving the Wisdom God Freely Gives
Ep 74 - In this episode of Say Goodbye and Imagine!, Rose Ann Forte continues the Wisdom series with a reflection on Proverbs 2:6–7 (NLT), a passage that reminds us that wisdom is not earned through experience or effort—it is granted by God. Rose Ann walks listeners through a devotional reflection on why so many of us admire biblical wisdom yet struggle to access it when making real-life decisions. She explores how wisdom comes directly from God's Word, how listening for His voice requires intentional pause, and why integrity activates the protection Scripture promises. This episode invites listeners to rethink obedience—not as control, but as a desire to live free from unnecessary consequences—and to see wisdom as a treasure God longs to give. Rose Ann closes with three reflection questions and a prayer designed to help listeners slow down, listen, and walk forward with confidence and peace. Scripture Referenced: Proverbs 2:6–7 (NLT) Ephesians 2:2 (NLT) Key Themes: Wisdom as a gift, not an achievement Truth, integrity, and discernment Accessing God's wisdom through Scripture and listening Protection that comes from walking in truth Freedom from repeated consequences Resources Mentioned: Books: The Plans He Has for Me, Prepare to Quit, Transformed by His Promises www.choosefreedom.today/books Coaching and resources: https://www.choosefreedom.today Rose Ann Forte is an international best-selling author, addiction and behavioral habits specialist, and the creator of the Choose Freedom® framework. The Wisdom of Not Walking Alone
Ep 72 - As we begin a new year, many people quietly reflect on what they want to change—how they want to feel, who they want to become, and which habits no longer serve them. In this episode of Say Goodbye and Imagine, Rose Ann Forte continues the Wisdom Series by exploring why community plays a critical role in lasting change. Drawing from Acts 2:42, this episode examines how the early believers devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, shared meals, and prayer—and why faith was never meant to be practiced in isolation. Rose Ann shares personal stories from churches, Bible studies, mission trips, and small groups, highlighting how intentional community creates safety, accountability, and growth. The episode also addresses an important balance: Scripture calls us out of isolation, but not into reckless vulnerability. Discernment matters. Not every community is safe for every struggle, and wisdom requires listening to the Holy Spirit when deciding where and with whom to share. Whether you're rethinking your relationship with alcohol, other habits, or simply seeking greater clarity and support, this episode offers a grounded reminder: wisdom doesn't grow in isolation—it grows in community. Scripture referenced: Acts 2:42 (NLT) All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord's Supper), and to prayer. Compassion, Justice, and the Choices That Shape Generations
Ep 71 - A wisdom devotional on God's nature, generational impact, and choosing obedience Episode Summary In this episode of Say Goodbye and Imagine, Rose Ann walks listeners through a powerful wisdom devotional rooted in Exodus 34:6–8, where God declares His own name and nature: compassionate, merciful, slow to anger, faithful — and just. This passage reveals a holy tension we often struggle to hold: God's unfailing love alongside real consequences for unrepentant sin. Rose Ann reflects on how Scripture repeatedly shows God patiently warning, inviting, and calling His people back — not to shame them, but to protect them and the generations that follow. She then connects Scripture with modern science, explaining how behavioral modeling, stress responses, epigenetics, and habit formation confirm what the Bible has always taught: our choices ripple outward. What we practice doesn't stop with us. The episode closes with reflective questions designed to help listeners consider patterns, obedience, and the legacy they are shaping — followed by a gentle reminder that support is available when these questions feel hard to resolve alone. Key Scripture Exodus 34:6–8 (NLT) The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, "Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations." Moses immediately threw himself to the ground and worshiped. Topics discussed - God declaring His own name and character Compassion, mercy, patience, and faithfulness God's justice and the purpose of consequences Generational impact of choices and behaviors Science supporting biblical wisdom (epigenetics, modeling, stress response) Choosing obedience as generational stewardship Reflection Questions (from the episode) What behaviors, beliefs, or coping patterns are you currently modeling for others? Where might God be inviting you to choose obedience for the sake of those who come after you? What consequences of disobedience do you hope end with you? When Life Gets Loud, Listen Closer
Ep 70 - When life gets loud and when distractions multiply, emotions surge, routines slip, and pressures rise, our first instinct is usually to run faster, try harder, or grasp for control. But Jesus gives us a different invitation: "Pay close attention to what you hear…" —Mark 4:24–25 (NLT) In this episode, Rose Ann shares a deeply personal devotional about learning to listen closely to God in seasons of chaos and in seasons of comfort—when things were falling apart and when they seemed to be going well. She also opens up about the subtle drift that happens when we stop listening, the consequences of losing our spiritual focus, and the neuroscience that confirms what Jesus taught: what you repeatedly pay attention to will shape your entire life. If life feels loud right now, this episode is your reminder to listen closer. 🧠 In This Episode, You'll Discover: Why Jesus tied listening to understanding and wisdom How early spiritual fire can fade when life returns to "normal" The pattern of drifting from God after answered prayers — and how to break it How volunteering, Bible studies, and community brought Rose Ann back into daily obedience The science of attention: how your brain rewires itself based on what you focus on Why God's Word quiets fear, anxiety, comparison, and the noise of the world A wisdom-filled quote from Craig Groeschel: "Your life is always moving in the direction of your strongest thoughts." 🔍 Key Verse Mark 4:24–25 (NLT) "Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given…" 💭 Reflection Questions Where has life felt "loud" lately—and whose voice have you been listening to most? What simple daily rhythm (Scripture, devotional time, prayer) could help you pay closer attention to God again? Could serving or joining a Bible study help anchor you in consistent community and spiritual growth? What are your strongest thoughts right now—and where are they leading your life? 🙏 Closing Prayer Father, I desire to pay closer attention to your voice and your Word. I want to receive greater understanding and wisdom in my life. I commit to listening closely—every day. In Jesus' name, Amen. 🕊 If This Episode Spoke to You… Rose Ann would love to hear from you. The Moment Before You Lose Control
Ep 69 - In this episode of Say Goodbye and Imagine, Rose Ann transitions from the 12 Core Concepts into a brand-new exploration of godly wisdom—how Scripture guides our choices, shapes our mindset, and strengthens our self-control. Rose Ann shares the behind-the-scenes process of how her devotional writings begin: through daily Bible reading, reflection, and noticing what God highlights in His Word. Today's insight comes from Genesis 4:7, a passage where God gently warns Cain that sin is crouching at the door—but also affirms that Cain has the power to subdue it. This episode dives into: Why this moment in Genesis reveals a patient and loving God How unchecked emotions (like anger) open the door to life-interfering behaviors The Hebrew imagery of sin "crouching" like a predator How this connects to 1 Peter 5:8 and moments of temptation Why godly decision making begins with recognizing that the Holy Spirit empowers us to choose what is right How renewed neural pathways and spiritual self-control work together Rose Ann also shares her heart behind her next devotional project on godly wisdom and invites listeners to participate by sending the Scriptures that have shaped their own decision-making journey. She closes with a prayer from her devotional draft and a reminder that resources for substance or behavior struggles are available at www.choosefreedom.today. It's Addictive: The Neuroscience of Habit and the Hope of Renewal - Core Concept 11
Why do we keep going back to the things we say we don't want to do? What if the problem isn't a moral failure—but a hijacked reward system in the brain? In this episode, Rose Ann Forte dives into the neuroscience behind addiction and why willpower alone isn't enough to break free. With biblical wisdom and brain-based understanding, she reveals the powerful biological process God designed—and how addictive substances or behaviors take advantage of it. If you've ever wondered "What happened to me? I used to be goal-oriented... joyful... motivated…"—this episode will help you make sense of that confusion, without shame. You'll learn: What dopamine is and how it works in normal vs. addictive habits Why addictive behaviors crowd out joy from everyday life What Scripture says about these destructive cycles (Proverbs 23:31–35, Ephesians 5:15–18, Romans 12:2, Galatians 5:1) Why renewing your mind is scientifically and spiritually possible How the Choose Freedom® Program and resources like Prepare to Quit can help you rewire your brain and reclaim your joy 📚 Mentioned in the Episode: Prepare to Quit book on Amazon » The Plans He Has for Me devotional » Join the private Facebook group for The Plans He Has For Me: click here » 💡 Don't forget to: Subscribe to this podcast Leave a review (honest, anonymous, short is fine!) on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen or read Share this episode with someone stuck in the shame cycle—they need hope, not guilt Explore coaching or the Choose Freedom program to experience lasting change Featured Scriptures Proverbs 23:31–35 (NLT): "Don't gaze at the wine, seeing how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup, how smoothly it goes down. For in the end, it bites like a poisonous snake; it stings like a viper. You will see hallucinations, and you will say crazy things. You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast. And you will say, 'They hit me, but I didn't feel it. I didn't even know it when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can look for another drink?'" Ephesians 5:15–18 (NLT): "So be careful how you live. Don't live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit." Romans 12:2 (NIV): "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will." Galatians 5:1 (NIV): "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." [00:02:32] - Starting the Core Concept 11: "It's Addictive" Discussion of the importance of understanding addiction, especially the biology behind it, and how that knowledge is freeing. In this episode of Say Goodbye and Imagine, Rose Ann Forte explores Core Concept 10: Finding Purpose—the pivotal moment when we begin to replace destructive habits with meaningful pursuits. This isn't about giving something up—it's about stepping into who God created you to be. Drawing from Scripture and real-life reflection, Rose Ann shares how purpose gets lost when we're numbing pain, and how we can reclaim it—one step at a time. Understanding Purpose Loss How substances and toxic behaviors cloud our sense of purpose and God-given gifts The disconnection from who we were created to be Moving from goal-oriented confidence to feeling lost and frustrated The Lies We Believe Impact of unrealistic standards and comparison culture Pressure to fit in rather than embrace our unique design How pain and coping mechanisms (like drinking) deepen the disconnection from purpose Biblical Foundation Three key scriptures discussed: Jeremiah 29:11 - God's plans to prosper and give hope Ephesians 2:10 - Created for good works prepared in advance Romans 12:2 - Transformed by the renewing of your mind This week, take time to reflect on the person you used to be and the dreams you've set aside. Ask yourself: "What did I use to love doing? What have I always wanted to try?" Whether it's picking up a musical instrument, exploring a career change through community college courses, or rediscovering hobbies like flower arranging, woodworking, or sports—start small but start somewhere. For parents, consider how you can be more present with your children and what lasting memories or values you want to instill in them. Remember, finding purpose isn't about grand gestures or immediate transformation; it's about following the instincts of who you were created to be and trusting that God will use these joy-filled pursuits in His kingdom. The key is to replace what you're removing with something that brings genuine fulfillment and aligns with your unique design. In the next episode, we'll dive into Core Concept 11: It's Addictive, where we'll explore the nature of addictive substances and behaviors and how understanding this reality can strengthen your resolve to stay free. Before then, if this podcast is serving you on your journey, please take a moment to like, rate, or review it on your favorite platform—your feedback helps others discover these life-changing concepts. The Two Commandments That Can Change Everything - Core Concept 9
This week Rose Ann explores Core Concept 9 from the Choose Freedom Program: The Greatest Commandments. Discover how two simple but profound commands from Jesus can transform your freedom journey and help you understand the root of addiction and destructive behaviors. Key Topics Covered The Greatest Commandment Rose Ann unpacks Matthew 22:37-40, where Jesus identifies the commandments: Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. Learn how prioritizing these commands creates the foundation for lasting freedom. Building Your Relationship with God Daily time in Scripture and reflection Prayer as both speaking and practicing stillness Meditating on God's Word Cultivating daily gratitude (writing down 10 things you're grateful for) The Science Behind Transformation Neuroscience supports what God has been telling us for thousands of years—these spiritual practices literally change our neural pathways and renew our minds, just as Romans 12:2 promises. Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself Understanding God's love for us transforms how we view others. Rose Ann shares her personal journey from judgment to grace, explaining why we must love ourselves first before we can truly extend that same love to others. The Role of Forgiveness Freedom and healing begin when we reorder our love: God first, then self, then others. Processing forgiveness—both of ourselves and others—releases us to love as God loves us. Reflection Questions What would shift in your life if loving God came first? What's first in your life right now—is it a habit, substance, or even a family member over God? Are you trying to do this alone when you need support and accountability? The Truth About Temptation: Breaking Free with Faith - Core Concept #1 of the Choose Freedom Program
Ep 57 - Rose Ann kicks off a series exploring the 12 core concepts of the Choose Freedom program, starting with "The Truth About Temptation." If you've ever struggled with breaking old habits or felt shame around temptation, this episode is for you. Rose Ann breaks down what temptation really means, why it's not a sin, and how you can use faith and practical tools to overcome it. Key Takeaways: Temptation is not a sin—feeling tempted is normal, and even Jesus experienced it. Shame doesn't solve the problem; awareness and understanding do. The enemy's strategy often starts with confusion and doubt, as seen in the story of Adam and Eve. Our brains create automatic patterns, making it easy to fall back into old habits. You can break free by anchoring yourself in scripture, practicing saying "not an option," and relying on the Holy Spirit rather than just willpower. Scripture References Mentioned: Matthew 4 – Jesus is tempted in the wilderness. Genesis 2:16 – God's instruction to Adam about the tree of knowledge. Genesis 3:1-2 – The serpent's temptation and Eve's response. 1 Peter 5:8 – "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion…" 1 Timothy 4:15 – "Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress." Galatians 5:1 – "It is for freedom that Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." Want to go deeper? Alcohol and the Lie of Using it for Loneliness
Ep 56 - I'm taking a short break from new episodes this month, but I did not want to leave you without something powerful to listen to. Over the past two years, I've had the honor of speaking with some truly incredible guests, and one of those conversations continues to stand out for its deep impact. Tracy is a 54-year-old nurse who has been alcohol-free for nearly two and a half years and over that time, her transformation has been incredible. She bravely opened up about her decades-long struggle with alcohol, how it affected every area of her life, and her inspiring journey to living alcohol-free. Tracy's honesty about the ups and downs, and how she ultimately reconnected with her faith, is nothing short of powerful. Here are 3 key takeaways for anyone considering change: 🔹 Alcohol-Free Doesn't Mean Lonely Tracy shared that her drinking was rooted in loneliness and the desire for connection. She realized that alcohol actually further disconnected her from her loved ones—and rediscovered true connection after giving it up. 🔹 Role Models Matter (Across Generations) Her biggest motivation? Being a role model for her grandkids. Tracy wanted to break the cycle and show by example that life can be joyful and meaningful without alcohol. 🔹 Professional Wisdom: Health Impacts Are Real As a nurse, Tracy witnessed the physical toll of alcohol on her patients—including heart disease, diabetes, and liver failure—which fueled her decision to make a change. If you're curious about living alcohol-free or know someone who is, Tracy's story is a testament to hope, resilience, and the possibility of transformation at any stage of life. 💛 00:00 Inspiring Alcohol-Free Journey 05:00 First Alcohol Encounter: Childhood Memories 07:28 Life-Changing Accident at 18 11:35 "Isolation from Trauma and Loss" 15:17 Generational Alcohol-Free Advocacy 20:03 Alcohol's Link to Cancer Awareness 22:10 Absent Presence in Relationships 25:19 Alcohol Abuse and Community Challenges 27:52 Discovering God's Presence & Healing 32:13 Faith, Forgiveness, and Positive Impact 36:40 "Seek Alcohol-Free Support Now" 37:55 Program Experience Inspires Faith-Based Solution If this conversation encouraged you or gave you something to think about, I'd love it if you take a moment to follow the show, leave a rating or review or even share it with a friend. The Biblical Battle Plan: How to Break Free from Strongholds (The 4 R's) with Pastor Rustin Rossello
Ep 51 - Pastor Rustin Rossello from Scottsdale Bible Church shares his personal journey of redemption and transformation through faith, offering a powerful testimony that resonates deeply with anyone who's ever felt trapped by life's strongholds. As someone who has battled with substance use, Pastor Rustin provides a raw and inspiring account of finding freedom in Christ. Key highlights from our conversation include: Understanding Strongholds: Pastor Rustin breaks down the concept of spiritual strongholds, explaining how they are formed and why they have such a grip on our lives. He shares how, through seemingly small agreements, we give the enemy a place to operate in our lives. The 4 R's to Break Free: Discover the biblical battle plan involving the 4 R's—Repent, Receive, Rebuke, and Replace—that can dismantle these strongholds and lead you to a life of spiritual freedom. The Power of Truth: Highlighting the necessity of being rooted in God's Word, Pastor Rustin stresses the role of truth in overcoming the lies and deceptions of the enemy. Community and Accountability: Learn the importance of finding a supportive community that shares your struggles, as well as the transformational power of accountability in your journey. This episode is a lifeline for anyone seeking to overcome addiction, fear, or any stronghold that keeps them from living abundantly. We explore not just the problem, but also provide actionable steps to pave your way towards spiritual victory. We also encourage you to revisit the sermon by Pastor Rustin that sparked this conversation. It's linked in our episode show notes and is a must-watch for anyone wanting to delve deeper into spiritual warfare and freedom. https://www.scottsdalebible.com/message-archive/v/spiritual-warfare-week-1-breaking-strongholds?categoryId=648a5f39388c793aabc68b24 Thank you for being part of our community. We hope this episode equips and encourages you to stand firm in your faith and live life to the fullest as God intended. P.S. Remember Galatians 5:1 - "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Let's walk together in this truth! 00:00 A sermon on spiritual battles attracted 2,000 attendees, emphasizing that our true battles are spiritual, not physical. 04:14 Molested at five, I became a people pleaser, using humor and athletics to cope, feeling at home in junior high where everyone felt awkward about sex and bodies. 08:18 Struggled with self-acceptance, rediscovered faith, and sought a grace-based relationship with God after a decade away. 11:12 A churchgoer, Steve, encouraged daily attendance to counter daily drinking; the narrator later confesses this to their concerned spouse. 14:49 Sober journey from suicidal to teaching pastor over 15 years; unexpected transformation attributed to faith. 18:52 Sin begins with agreement with the enemy, as seen in Genesis, where Eve is tempted despite being in God's perfect creation. 20:57 Mankind's choice to prioritize temptation over God's will led to sin, resulting in a fallen state marked by death and decay. 25:51 Fear leads to a false sense of control, offering an illusion of power without actual influence. 27:57 Believers face spiritual warfare, risking agreements with the enemy, who distorts God's creation. God should be our stronghold, not the enemy. 31:18 Recovery requires spiritual growth and community support with like-minded individuals who understand your struggles. 35:24 Christ's victory over sin and death subdues the enemy, who still seeks to destroy incrementally to remain hidden. 36:53 Don't measure your life by others' standards. Personal challenges can feel major due to internal struggles, much like how trauma exacerbates situations unexpectedly. 40:37 Years of counseling helped me place my sexual abuse on an abuse spectrum, offering clarity and comfort. 45:55 Dismantling spiritual strongholds involves repentance, receiving forgiveness, rebuking the enemy, using Christ's authority, and replacing lies with truth. Repentance means turning away from sin, not just seeking forgiveness. 49:25 Repentance involves changing beliefs and returning to God's goodness, leading to forgiveness upon confessing sins. 51:16 The Bible teaches active rebuking of the enemy through obedience and authority, as demonstrated by Jesus, the disciples, and other followers who cast out demons and brought the kingdom. 56:03 Recovery needs a higher power; flourishing addicts often recognize this. 59:10 Praying for those struggling despite trying various solutions, seeking spiritual breakthrough. 59:44 Pray for breakthrough, guidance, and restoration.

Dr. Weiner is a board-certified psychologist and addiction specialist who works nationally on addiction, behavioral health, and the impact of drug policies on public health. His expertise comes from directing hospital addiction services, along with experience in private practice, combining clinical experience with current research. Because we're interviewing a doctor today, I wanted to give you a quick disclaimer: The content of this podcast is for informational and educational purposes only. The views and opinions expressed are those of individual guests and do not constitute medical advice. Always seek the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional with any questions you may have regarding your health, medical conditions, or treatments. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking it based on something you heard on this podcast. And if you enjoy the content in this episode, please help us spread the word by liking, sharing, and following the podcast. It really helps get the word out. Thanks! Dr. Weiner is also a past president of the Society of Addiction Psychology and serves as an addiction policy advisor for the American Psychological Association. He's on the Science Advisory Board for the Foundation for Drug Policy Solutions, and his insights have been featured in Newsweek, USA Today, The Chicago Tribune, The Guardian, Psychology Today, and The New York Times. Welcome, Dr. Weiner! It's so great to have you with us. Today, we're going to discuss levels of care, we want people to understand when someone might need a different level of care and how to be aware of where they are on that spectrum. For example, some people may have a habit like drinking one or two drinks a day. Sometimes that requires a higher level of care, and sometimes it doesn't. We're all unique, and it's important to know when something might need more attention. Dr. Aaron Weiner's website https://www.weinerphd.com/ Say Goodbye And Imagine shares the firsthand victories of those who have broken free from the psychological slavery of alcohol or other substances. Our greatest hope is to share these stories of triumph so you can draw inspiration and courage from their stories. But our podcast doesn't just offer hope—it showcases the real, tangible outcomes of lives transformed by faith and the collective strength of a community that believes in second chances. Warning: our Say Goodbye And Imagine podcast is a little different. We don't use words that create shame or a negative identity. So, in our podcast we don't use vocabulary like alcoholic or alcoholism, alcohol addiction or alcohol recovery, recovery or recovering, sober or sobriety, addict or addiction, powerless or powerlessness, and other words that take away our identity in God. Since we are remade in the image of God, we seek an identity that is empowering through Him. Although we respect and honor groups like AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), Celebrate Recovery, and sober rehabilitation centers, our topics tend to be very individual, focusing on the unique journey of each participant. What is not unique is the common thread of the power of the Holy Spirit at work in each episode. If you desire to quit drinking or have been searching for ways to reconnect with God, then please tune in. Hear the amazing success stories of Christians just like you who decided to choose freedom from alcohol or other substances. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) "For I know the plans I have for you", declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Rose Ann Forte is the host of Say Goodbye and Imagine. Rose Ann had reached a point in her own life when she realized that alcohol was stealing from her and understood that God had a much better plan for her. Pornography - Common Battles and Distinct Paths
Ep 36 - It may just be time to introduce pornography into the Say Goodbye and Imagine podcast. This next episode is with Eric Zuzack, who is a coach who helps men overcome pornography addiction. It was a fascinating conversation because I had no idea of the similarities about how people become enslaved to something like that - and how alcohol had lots of similarities, and also similarities in the methodologies to healing. This episode is a really great look at what's going on in the world. I mean, some powerful things came across to me in this interview. Like the fact that I had never really considered the fact that sex traffickers are using children for pornography, or the fact that there's such a thing as a pornography hangover, just like an alcohol hangover, or the fact that we have habit buddies, bad habit buddies, and in this episode we talk about a few good habit buddies, but for instance with alcohol it was salami and cheese for me, and for Eric it was wine and junk food. I think if you're a parent in today's world, it's important that you pay attention to this topic. Kids are getting access to this stuff at seven years old. I'm, I can gratefully say, I'm glad I'm not parenting young children today. I also share a very little known secret about my last name Forte in this episode, so listen in for that! Connect with Eric here - www.PowerfulEric.com Join us as we dive into themes of healing, forgiveness, and the relentless pursuit of a healthier faith centered life, whether you're seeking encouragement for your own journey or looking to support someone else, Russell's story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. Hear the amazing success stories of Christians just like you who decided to choose freedom from alcohol or other substances.
