Drawing from her own journey into sobriety and decades of experience helping others, Jenni explores common misconceptions Christians often have about addiction. She explains why stopping is only the beginning of real recovery.(46:52) Addressing the Pain Beneath AddictionThe conversation shifts toward the deeper issues that fuel addictive behaviors. Jenni and Lacey discuss how unresolved pain, trauma, and internal turmoil often drive addiction, and why healing those roots is essential.(1:07:11) Walking Out Faith in RecoveryThe episode closes by exploring what it looks like to actively walk out faith during recovery. Announcement & Prayer Request

There is no easy way to start this description. So I will get right into it.On January 16, 2026, it came to light that I had been engaging in inappropriate conversations with a woman and with chatbots through apps and texting, seeking and soliciting inappropriate images. Our daughters first discovered this, and in that moment, I did not tell them the truth. It was only after several hours of conversation between Lacey and me that the full extent of what had been happening came to light. This is in addition to something we shared with our board in the fall of 2025 — that I had returned to pornography for about 9 months after experiencing sixteen years of freedom. There is no excuse for the choices I made. They were sinful, manipulative, deceptive, and deeply hurtful to my wife and girls. Bringing this into the light is incredibly painful and embarrassing to my family, but I know that it is necessary for my repentance and our healing and restoration to begin.Last week, the board of Cultivate Ministries met and discussed a plan for our family and this process of restoration. Lacey and our girls will be receiving counseling and support, and I am pursuing intensive help for both this addiction and the deeper, unaddressed issues that led to it. Several trusted men and a ministry team from our church are walking closely with me in this process.Over the next few months, while I focus my time and attention on personal healing and restoration, Lacey will continue to minister and teach while she also works through her own hurt and brokenness because of what I did.During this time, we first and foremost ask that you pray for Spirit-led wisdom and direction for our ministry and our family. Pray for healing and restoration to take place in our marriage and in our home with our girls. Pray for Cultivate Relationships and how God might lead you to financially partner with us as we take this necessary time to heal and walk through this process. We still believe that Jesus’ finished work on the cross is the key to freedom, healing, and restoration for any and every sin.  And this fact is not shaken nor moved by this sin.Thank you for your grace, your prayers, and for allowing us the space to pursue the help we need. Thank you and God bless,Nathan & Lacey Steel

    STB161 | BSE | Hebrews 8.13-10.18 E2 | Cultivate Relationships

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION - Nathan and Pastor Scott continue their study through Hebrews by confronting how easily believers drift back into external rules, self-effort, and spiritual performance. This episode presses into the heart of the gospel: Jesus didn’t partially replace the old covenant — he fulfilled and rendered it obsolete. The conversation exposes how law-based thinking (a life built on the 10 Commandments) still shapes worship, discipleship, and judgment today, and re-centers salvation as trusting Jesus’ finished work while living empowered by the Holy Spirit, not managed by religious systems. *Please note, this discussion takes place in two episodes. This is episode two.*— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) From Law to LifeThe discussion moves from legalistic habits and outward performance to the freedom of trusting Jesus as mediator, exposing how both conservative and charismatic systems subtly replace reliance on the Spirit.(21:47) One Sacrifice, Once for AllHebrews 9–10 takes center stage as the conversation clarifies that Jesus’ death didn’t supplement the Law — it ended it. The old system pointed forward; the reality is now fully present in Christ.(40:53) The End of the Age(s) ExplainedAttention turns to “end of the age” language in the New Testament, distinguishing the end of the Law-centered age from the future physical return of Jesus, helping untangle common eschatology confusion.(51:57) Activation StepsThis episode concludes with the activation step, inviting reflection on how external rules still shape faith and how to practice trust, rest, and obedience empowered by the Spirit.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb160/• Playlist | Revelationhttps://cultivaterelationships.com/revelation/• Playlist | Galatianshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/galatians/• STB074 | BSE | Bible Odditieshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb074/• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB160 | BSE | Hebrews 8.13-10.18 E1 | Cultivate Relationships

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan and Pastor Scott begin a series exploring Hebrews 9-13 by setting the theological foundation for why Jesus is greater than everything that came before him (think Old Testament Law and the 10 Commandments). Before diving into doctrine, they dive into the purpose, authorship, and structure of Hebrews. This episode reframes the Old Testament as a shadow pointing to Jesus, clarifying why the law could diagnose sin but never heal it — and why intimacy with the Father is now fully accessible through Jesus. *Please note, this discussion takes place in two episodes. This is episode one.*— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) Introduction to Hebrews: Author and DateThe episode opens with candid conversation and irreverent humor, modeling how emotional awareness, stress, and everyday life matter in spiritual formation before getting into the setting of the book of Hebrews.(11:10) Why Hebrews Was WrittenThe discussion shifts to the background of Hebrews — its audience, timing, and likely authorship — explaining why the message was delivered anonymously and why it speaks so directly to Jewish believers.(24:01) Jesus Is Greater Than the LawThe heart of this section unpacks Hebrews 8.13 and 9.9, showing how Jesus fulfills every role of the Old Testament. The law revealed sin, but only Jesus restores relationship and heals what the law could never fix.(35:54) Shadows vs. RealityFinally, this section contrasts the Old Testament as a shadow with Jesus as the substance, using relational analogies to show why clinging to the law after Christ is like choosing a shadow over the real person.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb160/• Playlist | Revelationhttps://cultivaterelationships.com/revelation/• Playlist | Galatianshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/galatians/• STB074 | BSE | Bible Odditieshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb074/• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

STB159 | BSE | Conflict: The Process of Resolution | Cultivate Relationships

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION – Nathan and Pastor Scott walk through the process of resolution by defining forgiveness, repentance, reconciliation, and restoration through the lens of Jesus and the gospel. They challenge behavior-based gospel narratives and show how the good news begins with who people are as God designed them, not what they’ve done. This episode reframes salvation, propitiation, reconciliation, and restoration as participation in God’s new creation, inviting Christians to live as ambassadors who reflect grace in real relationships.— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) Why Definitions MatterThe conversation opens by exposing how misunderstanding propitiation, forgiveness, repentance, reconciliation, and restoration can keep people stuck in brokenness, bitterness, and pain. Clear definitions remove fear, dismantle deception, and make it possible to begin the process of resolution.(24:06) Identity v BehaviorUsing 2 Corinthians 5, the discussion reframes the gospel as identity-first. People are not defined by sin or behavior, but by who God says they are — reshaping how we view repentance, forgiveness, and ultimately, evangelism.(1:03:27) Ambassadors of ReconciliationAttention turns to our role as participants in God’s work. Believers don’t repeat Jesus’ sacrifice, but they do carry His message — inviting others to repent, return, and live from their restored design.(1:22:58) Activation StepsThis episode closes with reflection and application, inviting listeners to examine how they view people, release behavior-based judgments, and actively practice reconciliation as ambassadors of God’s new creation.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb159/• Podcast Playlist | Forgivenesshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/forgiveness/• Podcast Playlist | Revelationhttps://cultivaterelationships.com/revelation/• The Freedom Booklethttps://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/• What is the Septuagint?https://cultivaterelationships.com/bible-tools/old-testament/#ot-texts• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB158 | BSE | Conflict: Anger E2 | Cultivate Relationships

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan and Pastor Scott conclude their two-part teaching on anger by clarifying how anger reveals what’s happening in the heart. In this second episode, they move from unhealthy expressions of anger (smoldering and explosive) into a biblical understanding of righteous anger, showing how anger can either protect one's self or serve restoration. The conversation challenges listeners to discern motive, submit reactions to the Holy Spirit, and practice repentance that leads toward maturity, forgiveness, and reconciliation. This episode brings both teachings together, offering a clear pathway for handling anger in a way that reflects the heart of our Heavenly Father. *Please note, this discussion takes place in two episodes. This is episode two.*— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) From Smoldering to Explosive AngerThe episode wraps up smoldering anger (quiet resentment, avoidance, passive control) and transitions into explosive anger—how outbursts, escalation, and intimidation often reveal unprocessed offense and unmet desires.(21:28) Righteous AngerThe focus shifts to righteous anger—how anger can be a Spirit-led response when it protects what is good, confronts what harms, and refuses to let injustice or distortion stand, without becoming self-righteous or cruel.(33:42) Application: Checking Our AngerThis section closes the righteous anger teaching with application questions that help expose motives. The aim is discernment: is anger rooted in love and restoration, or in ego, control, fear, and self-protection?(50:20) Activation Steps (for episodes 1 & 2)This episode closes by combining the activation questions from both parts—identifying your anger pattern, inviting the Holy Spirit to search your heart, repenting where needed, and taking practical steps toward repair.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb158/• STB157 | BSE | Conflict: Anger E1https://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb157/• Bookshelf | UnLovehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/bookshelf/#unlove• The Habit Treehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/the-habit-tree-worksheet/• The Freedom Booklethttps://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/• Lacey's Story with Angerhttps://cultivaterelationships.com/small-group-videos/cwc-laceys-story/• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB157 | BSE | Conflict: Anger E1 | Cultivate Relationships

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan and Pastor Scott begin a two-part conversation on conflict by reframing anger through the lens of Scripture. Rather than suppressing anger or labeling it as a sin, this episode examines indignation as a morally neutral response that reveals our motives and how we respond to offense. Together, they unpack how unresolved anger creates space for the enemy, how misapplied Bible verses fuel control instead of maturity, and why learning to process anger rightly is essential for healthy relationships, leadership, and spiritual growth. *Please note, this discussion takes place in two episodes. This is episode one.*— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) Irreverent Humor and Honest HumanityThe episode opens with unscripted humor and cultural banter, setting a relational tone that contrasts with the weight of the topic ahead. This opening reminds listeners that conflict and anger are discussed best within real, human connection.(15:41) Be Angry, But Do Not SinThe teaching begins by examining Ephesians 4.26–27. Anger is defined as neutral, while sin is determined by how it’s expressed or stewarded. Misusing this passage to force resolution is challenged in favor of heart-level responsibility.(39:26) Indignation, Control, and the HeartThe conversation turns to indignation as a shared biblical word used of both Jesus and his opponents. The distinction isn’t necessarily the behavior, but rather, the underlying motivation — a righteous response versus self-righteousness or unrighteousness.(46:46) Smoldering Anger vs Explosive AngerThe conversation turns to two unhealthy, unrighteous, and self-righteous expressions of anger. Smoldering anger hides beneath passivity and avoidance, while explosive anger surfaces through outbursts and control. Both avoid honest processing and set the stage for deeper conflict if left unresolved.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb157/• Bookshelf | UnLovehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/bookshelf/#unlove• The Habit Treehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/the-habit-tree-worksheet/• The Freedom Booklethttps://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/• Lacey's Story with Angerhttps://cultivaterelationships.com/small-group-videos/cwc-laceys-story/• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB156 | BSE | Identity: Our Participation

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan and Pastor Scott wrap up the Identity series by focusing on participation, clarifying how redemption invites us into active cooperation with what the Holy Spirit is rebuilding. After an opening conversation on humor, reverence, and knowing your audience, the study begins by confronting the idea that participation equals performance. Instead, obedience is framed as a response to grace, not an attempt to earn it. Drawing from Isaiah 61, this episode shows how true participation requires submission, stretches comfort, and forms maturity as we join God in His ongoing work of restoration.— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) Irreverent Humor, Reverence, and Knowing Your AudienceBefore the study begins, the conversation wrestles with “irreverence”: being accused of it, pulling back in group threads, and sorting out when humor is healthy (and when it can unnecessarily offend).(15:48) Participation Is Not PerformanceThe study begins by reframing participation in God’s work. Obedience is not earning, striving, or religious effort—it’s responding to what the Spirit is already rebuilding through redemption.(41:45) Rebuilding Requires SubmissionUsing Isaiah 61, the discussion clarifies that restoration involves cooperation. Participation often stretches comfort, challenges control, and reveals where surrender—not self-direction—produces maturity.(1:13:20) Activation StepsThis episode closes with an invitation to ask the Holy Spirit where participation has been confused with performance and where submission is needed to join what God is actively rebuilding.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb156/• Podcast Playlist | Galatians Serieshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/galatians/• Bookshelf | Identity Booklethttps://cultivaterelationships.com/bookshelf/#identity• STB107 | Grieving the Loss of a Child + Sarah P1https://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb107/• Podcast Playlist | Forgivenesshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/forgiveness/• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB155 | BSE | Identity: Our Redemption

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan and Scott continue the Identity series by focusing on redemption, not as behavior management, but as restoration to God’s original design. They explore how redemption is not merely forgiveness of sin, but a reclaiming of purpose, desire, and identity—freeing us to live as God intended from the beginning. This episode challenges reductionistic views of redemption and invites listeners into Spirit-empowered transformation that reshapes how we think, live, and relate.— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) Redeemed to God’s DesignThe conversation opens by reframing redemption as being restored to how God originally designed humanity—good, relational, and empowered—rather than merely being rescued from wrongdoing.(18:07) Desire, Design, and DistortionAttention turns to how desires themselves are not sinful, but become distorted when disconnected from God’s design, shaping unhealthy habits, beliefs, and identity.(35:48) Transformation Beyond BehaviorThis section explores how true transformation goes deeper than behavior modification, addressing thought patterns, motivations, and identity through ongoing submission to the Spirit.(59:29) Activation StepsThis episode closes with an invitation to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where redemption has been reduced to rule-following and to embrace restoration into God’s original design.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb155/• Bookshelf | Salvation Booklethttps://cultivaterelationships.com/bookshelf/#salvation• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

STB154 | BSE | Identity: Our Corruption | Cultivate Relationships

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan and Scott step into the next part of the Identity series by examining corruption — not as a loss of identity, but as the breaking of our perception of it. Through Scripture, design analogies, and honest stories, they reveal how false beliefs, unhealthy habits, and misplaced desires slowly shape us away from God’s intention. This episode invites listeners to explore how the Spirit restores clarity, exposes unhealthy patterns, and rebuilds us through truth, community, and surrender.— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) Identity, Design, and Why Corruption MattersOpening reflections highlight how salvation and identity overlap. The conversation explores why understanding our broken patterns is essential to restoration.(17:34) Facing the RubbleThis section digs into the “building rubble” analogy — showing how we must examine the mess, not ignore it, so God can rebuild what’s been fractured through false views of design.(39:11) Healthy vs. Unhealthy PatternsExamples from sexuality, food, and legalism reveal how desire itself isn’t sinful — but how we pursue fulfillment can distort or align us with God’s design.(1:08:56) Activation StepsThis episode closes with practical guidance for inviting the Holy Spirit to expose corruption, clarify truth, and lead us into restored identity through community and surrender.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb154/• Bookshelfhttps://cultivaterelationships.com/bookshelf/• Bible Project | 1 Timothy (Modesty - Begins at 3:01)https://youtu.be/7RoqnGcEjcs?si=lSopJip8BTIp4WB2&t=181• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

STB153 | BSE | Identity: Our Perception | Cultivate Relationships

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan and Pastor Scott Frerking launch a new identity series by challenging the lie that people are “broken” at their core. Using Scripture and real-life stories, they explain how our identity as God’s image-bearers is intrinsic and irreplaceable, even when our lives feel messy. This episode reframes “blessing” as an opportunity to prosper, unpacks our mission to bring order to chaos, and invites listeners to see themselves the way the Father already does.— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) Perception, Value, and IdentityThe conversation moves from lighthearted banter into a story about “laundered” vacation money, illustrating how our identity retains value even when life, sin, and pain make everything feel ruined.(16:35) Made in God’s Image and LikenessAttention turns to Genesis 1, 5, and 9, showing that humanity remains God’s image-bearers before and after the fall and the flood. Our mission to multiply, steward, and bring order has never been revoked.(37:51) Intrinsic Worth vs. Broken NarrativesThe focus shifts to how religious language, like “less of me, more of Him”, can distort identity when misapplied. Nathan and Scott contrast those clichés with Jesus calling us light, salt, and a city on a hill.(55:22) Activation StepsThis episode closes with an invitation to ask the Holy Spirit where your view of yourself has been devalued, to agree with God’s declaration of your worth, and to step into your calling to bring order to chaos.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb153/• The Identity Guidehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/the-identity-guide/• The Freedom Booklethttps://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

STB152 | BSE | Salvation: Our Submission | Cultivate Relationships

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan and Pastor Scott explore salvation through the lens of submission, revealing that true freedom comes not from self-rule but from willingly aligning ourselves under God’s design. They unpack how salvation leads us into a life of surrendered trust — choosing the Spirit’s authority over the impulses of our habitual inclinations. Submission is not passivity; it’s the doorway into Spirit-empowered living, where obedience produces maturity, purpose, and the fruit of God’s life within us.— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) Living by the SpiritThe episode opens by reframing salvation as a call to surrender — choosing the Spirit’s leadership over self-direction so that our lives reflect God’s design rather than our impulses.(17:03) The Tension of Flesh and SpiritThe focus turns to Paul’s contrast between flesh and Spirit, showing that the battle is ultimately about submission: whichever authority we yield to shapes our character, choices, and destiny.(34:46) The Purpose of FreedomThis section highlights that freedom isn’t autonomy — it’s empowerment to submit to God’s design for human love, service, and holiness. True freedom expresses itself through Spirit-led obedience that benefits others.(1:04:20) Activation StepsThis episode closes with an invitation to ask the Holy Spirit to expose areas of resistance, surrender those places to His leadership, and step into the peace and power that come from daily submission.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb152/• Study Bookletshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/bookshelf/• A Tale of Three Kings, by Gene Edwardshttps://a.co/d/f8xwl1n• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

They uncover how salvation restores humanity to its original design — living in partnership with God’s purpose and authority. They show that redemption is not a single moment of escape but an ongoing journey of transformation, where believers learn to walk in true freedom, maturity, and Spirit-led life.— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) Understanding Sin and RebellionNathan and Scott revisit Genesis and Romans to redefine sin as rebellion against design, not inherited corruption, and explore how the gospel restores divine purpose.(18:01) The Nature of RedemptionThey discuss how salvation reconciles creation, humanity, and God’s authority, shifting our view from legal transaction to relational restoration.(36:55) Growing into MaturityThis section explores sanctification as an ongoing process — how believers are transformed by the Spirit into the likeness of Jesus through daily surrender.(1:08:22) Activation StepsThis episode closes with an invitation to let the Holy Spirit reveal where rebellion has distorted identity and to embrace the continual renewal found in walking with Him.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb151• Podcast Playlist | Romanshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/romans• The Freedom Booklethttps://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/• The Habit Treehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/the-habit-tree-worksheet/• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

STB150 | BSE | Salvation: Our "Fall" | Cultivate Relationships

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION — Nathan and Pastor Scott explore what salvation truly means, challenging traditional views of “the fall” and redefining it as humanity’s ongoing rebellion against God’s design. They unpack Luke 15 to show that every lost thing — a sheep, a coin, or a son — first belonged to its owner, revealing that redemption isn’t about earning God’s favor but returning to His heart. Together, they confront distorted teachings about salvation and highlight how reconciliation, repentance, and relationship with the Father are central to the gospel’s story.— EPISODE CHAPTERS —(00:00) Rethinking “The Fall”The conversation begins by reframing Genesis 3 as the “Garden Rebellion,” exploring how humanity’s separation was relational, not spatial, and how God’s voice never left creation.(14:36) The Lost and the FoundThrough Luke 15, the parables of the lost sheep, coin, and son reveal that all began in belonging — the Father’s pursuit of those who are lost reveals His unending desire for reconciliation.(33:43) The Father’s Love and Our ResponseThey examine the Luke 15 story, contrasting rebellion and unrighteousness with religion and self-righteousness while emphasizing the Father’s compassion toward both lost sons.(59:52) Activation StepsThis episode closes with an invitation to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where we’ve resisted relationship with the Father and to return — fully restored and reconciled to Him.— EPISODE LINKS —• Episode Noteshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb150• Podcast Playlist | Romanshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/romans• Podcast Playlist | Galatianshttps://cultivaterelationships.com/romans• More Content & Resources at Our Websitehttps://cultivaterelationships.com/

STB144 | Leading Others through the Freedom Booklet – TFB:P11 | Cultivate Relationships

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey equip listeners to walk others through the Freedom Booklet. They cover two practical formats — intentional one-on-one meetings and small groups (typically 2–4 participants) with a leader and co-leader — and share concrete best practices: set dates and timelines, provide accountability and simple hospitality (quiet space, coffee, childcare), keep leaders as facilitators (not counselors), enforce confidentiality and speaking rules, use the instructional videos, check in between sessions, and always allow the Holy Spirit to lead. It’s a practical, encouragement-filled guide for helping people move from stuck to free.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • Using This Resource with Others (PDF) https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB143 | Planting Truth – TFB:P10 | Cultivate Relationships

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey guide listeners through the last step of The Freedom Booklet, Step Nine: Receive and Replace — a transformative process of letting go of lies and replacing them with the Holy Spirit’s truth. Rather than simply releasing pain or sin, this step invites you to actively receive what Jesus is speaking over you, aligning your heart with His Word and stepping into lasting freedom. They explain how this isn’t just a cognitive shift but an invitation to action — hearing from God, walking in obedience, and marking the moment as a testimony of His work. This process closes the loop on the past and launches you forward into a future of hope and healing.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • STB124 | BSE | Real, Vulnerable Prayer E1 https://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb124/ • STB125 | BSE | Real, Vulnerable Prayer E2 https://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb125/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB142 | Releasing Control of the Harvest – TFB:P9 | Cultivate Relationships

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey discuss Step Eight — release and blessing — the part of resolving sin, loss, and offense that often gets overlooked but is essential to true freedom. Drawing from Matthew 5 and Romans 12, they show how the process of freedom is incomplete without releasing our expectations, debts, and hurts to God, whether in offense, loss, or personal sin. Release means surrendering control, shame, or unmet expectations and entrusting them fully to God’s justice and healing. But it doesn’t stop there — release flows into blessing, choosing to sacrificially pray for good even for those who have wounded us. As they share stories of transformation, they reveal how this process breaks bitterness, redirects our hearts, and opens the door to healing, freedom, and restored perspective in Jesus.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • Podcast Playlist | Forgiveness https://cultivaterelationships.com/forgiveness/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB141 | Pulling Weeds of Bitterness – TFB:P8 | Cultivate Relationships

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey step into the hard but freeing process of forgiveness. Scripture makes it clear that forgiving others is not optional, yet it often feels impossible. Forgiveness is more than ignoring the hurt or pretending it didn’t happen — it’s canceling the debt someone owes us and releasing them, even when what they did was real and painful. Through practical steps and honest reflection, you’ll learn how forgiveness reorients your heart, releases expectations, and opens the door for God’s healing power to work in your life. Discover how choosing forgiveness — even when it feels like obedience without emotion — creates space for true freedom.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • Podcast Playlist | Forgiveness https://cultivaterelationships.com/forgiveness/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB140 | Turning the Heart Soil – TFB:P7 | Cultivate Relationships

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey explore Jesus’ parable of the unforgiving servant and how it reveals our tendency to demand payment from others when we fail to rest in God’s forgiveness. They discuss the real meaning of repentance — more than admitting fault, it’s a Spirit-led reorientation of our hearts toward God. Therefore, true repentance acknowledges not only our outward actions but also the unhealthy thoughts and attitudes we’ve carried. Through confession and surrender, we invite God’s cleansing, release the grip of unforgiveness, and step into healing. This conversation shows that repentance is not punishment but freedom — the path where brokenness gives way to a restored relationship with God and others.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB139 | Cultivating Thankfulness – TFB:P6 | Cultivate Relationships

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey walk through Step Five of The Freedom Booklet, highlighting how gratitude becomes a catalyst to begin the process of the Holy Spirit healing our wounds. They explain that when we give thanks — even for painful experiences — we are not excusing the hurt but acknowledging God’s presence and redemptive work in the middle of it. Gratitude shifts our focus from what was lost to how God is redeeming, transforming bitterness into peace and despair into hope. This conversation shows how thanksgiving is more than a discipline; it’s a doorway to freedom, helping us release pain, embrace healing, and see our lives through the lens of God working all things for our good (that is, Him making what was evil and broken into what will be beneficial for us).   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • STB107 | Grieving the Loss of a Child + Sarah P1 https://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb107/ • STB108 | Coping & Resolving Loss + Sarah P2:E1 https://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb108/ • STB109 | Coping & Resolving Loss + Sarah P2:E2 https://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb109/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

    STB138 | Resolving Unmet Needs & Desires – TFB:P5 | Cultivate Relationships

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey walk through Step Four of The Freedom Booklet, exploring how unmet needs and unfulfilled desires often drive us to believe lies about God, ourselves, and others. These lies, formed through pain or disappointment, create patterns that keep us striving for fulfillment in unhealthy ways. They share how letting the Holy Spirit expose these false beliefs and reveal God’s truth leads to the genuine satisfaction of our deepest needs — needs for love, belonging, security, and purpose. This isn’t about suppressing desire, but about allowing God to meet it in ways that bring lasting peace and transformation.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey work through Step Three of The Freedom Booklet, focusing on coping behaviors, inner vows, and hidden beliefs that form in response to unresolved pain, sin, or trauma. They explain how these patterns — often made to protect oneself — eventually lead us to react instead of respond, producing fruit that doesn’t reflect the life of Jesus. With practical examples and real vulnerability, they show how honest confession, thoughtful self-reflection, and Holy Spirit-led insight are key to uprooting what’s been buried. This step isn’t about shame — it’s about clarity, healing, and lasting transformation.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey will guide you through Step Two of The Freedom Booklet, focusing on thoughts, beliefs, and feelings surrounding past offenses, losses, or sins. They explore why revisiting old wounds doesn’t mean we’ve failed to resolve them — it just means we’re allowing the Holy Spirit to expose unresolved layers of pain, perspective, and healing. With practical examples, they show how each layer of pain may call for fresh surrender. Whether you’re overly expressive or emotionally shut down, this step is about letting God search your heart and bring clarity to how past moments still affect you — and those around you — today.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey walk through how to examine the deeper roots of what’s producing fruit in your life — both good and bad. Using The Freedom Booklet, they talk about how trauma, self-protection, sin, and even religious performance can masquerade as strength while actually stunting spiritual growth. They challenge listeners to get honest about what’s growing in their lives and invite the Holy Spirit to help identify what needs to be uprooted, what needs to be healed, and how to move toward producing healthy fruit.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

In this episode, Nathan and Lacey introduce The Freedom Booklet, a practical tool designed to help you uproot the offenses, losses, and sins that keep producing bad fruit in your life. Using the analogy of invasive garden vines, they explain how sin, trauma, and false beliefs — if left alone — can overtake our hearts and relationships. They unpack how the Holy Spirit, Scripture, and community help address issues at the root level. Whether you’re confronting sin, walking through grief, or releasing someone through forgiveness, this tool is not a formula — but an invitation to let God have His opinion of your life’s experience and transform your inner life from the ground up.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Freedom Booklet https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-freedom-booklet/ • The Identity Guide https://cultivaterelationships.com/the-identity-guide/ • Podcast Playlist | Forgiveness https://cultivaterelationships.com/forgiveness/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION – Pastor Scott and Nathan give a behind-the-scenes look at how they design teaching series, whether for a Sunday morning sermon or a mid-week Bible study. They explore how practical theology, lifestyle discipleship, and Spirit-led planning help shape every session. They unpack how intentional structure (with a lot of flexibility) keeps people engaged, spiritually growing, and relationally connected. It’s a fun and honest look at planning for transformation, not just attendance.   — EPISODE CHAPTERS — (00:00) Why We Don’t Plan Alone Nathan and Scott reflect on collaborative series planning, involving community and the Holy Spirit — because lone pastors often miss real-life needs. Drawing from personal ministry experiences, they discuss when it’s necessary to confront teachers, peers, and even ourselves. This conversation is a call to examine not just what we believe, but who told us to believe it — and to courageously realign with the truth of Jesus.   — EPISODE CHAPTERS — (00:00) The Gospel We Didn’t Mean to Believe – Nathan and Scott expose how distorted views of God, sin, and ourselves quietly shape our theology. (19:09) False Freedom vs. Real Accountability – They explore how the gospel is often misapplied to excuse sin, and why real discipleship involves confronting friends and leaders in love. (36:00) How We Stay Stuck (Even When Forgiven) – This section challenges the false belief that forgiveness always equals freedom. They unpack how healing often requires confrontation, clarity, and action. (55:13) Discerning What (and Who) to Confront – They close by addressing when to confront a person, when to confront a teaching, and when to confront yourself—so truth can lead, not reaction.   — EPISODE LINKS — • The Life & Times of Jesus the Messiah, by Alfred Edersheim https://a.co/d/6BRixAQ • Podcast Playlist | Galatians Series https://cultivaterelationships.com/galatians/ • Podcast Playlist | 1-3 John https://cultivaterelationships.com/1-3-john/ • More Content & Resources at Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/

Nathan and Pastor Kevin continue their discussion about the challenges of balancing ministry, marriage, and parenting. As a Youth Pastor, Kevin reflects on his desire to be a supplemental voice in students’ lives — not a replacement for spiritually engaged parents. Together, they discuss how youth ministry should support what’s happening at home, not carry it. Kevin opens up about the pressures of leadership, the importance of putting his marriage first, and the lessons learned from marriage counseling and personal failures. He also shares how his upbringing shaped his views on emotional vulnerability — and why he’s committed to being open with his wife. They dive deep into parenting, calling out the dangers of disengagement and the power of simply being present. Kevin’s advice to parents: ask real questions, build trust daily, and don’t let fear or shame keep you from connecting with your kids. Prayer, by its nature, defines God as personal (Psalm 34.18; 139.7-12; Romans 10.20-21; Jeremiah 23.23-24). Prayer is a real and specific, vulnerable conversation with God (Matthew 6.9; 1 Timothy 2.5; Romans 8.26): The Father: giver of identity & destiny (e.g., plans, purpose, and design issues) The Son: revealer of identity & destiny (e.g., relationship and circumstantial issues) The Holy Spirit: empowerer of identity & destiny (e.g., ability and emotional issues) God desires connection with us (Psalm 51.16-17; Hosea 6.6). BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION – Nathan and Pastor Scott talk about what prayer truly is — and what it isn’t by looking at the disciples’ prayer in Matthew 6.5-14. Prayer isn’t just a monologue directed at God; it’s a real conversation with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They explore how prayer includes not just speaking, but also listening for God’s response and how to grow in our ability to hear His voice, not just Bible verses and what we think He’s saying. *Please note, this discussion takes place in two episodes. His obedience isn’t just submission to Paul, but evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work. Philemon’s discipleship is marked by radical love and vulnerable community, not safe, self-imposed limits. This is the power of a life changed by grace.   — EPISODE CHAPTERS — (00:00) INTRODUCTION (13:57) PHILEMON 8-16 (26:47) PHILEMON 17-20 (48:50) ACTIVATION STEPS   — EPISODE LINKS — • Bible Tools https://cultivaterelationships.com/bible-tools/ • STB033 | Intentionality + Joiners https://cultivaterelationships.com/shoot-the-breeze/stb033/ • More Content & Resources At Our Website https://cultivaterelationships.com/   — EPISODE NOTES — PHILEMON 21: PAUL AFFIRMS PHILEMON’S GOSPEL TRANSFORMATION Paul expresses confidence that Philemon will go beyond what he asked — not because of pressure, but because the gospel has truly changed him. Philemon’s obedience goes beyond submission to Paul, it is an outcome of the transformative power of the Holy Spirit working within him. Philemon’s discipleship was shaped by radical love and vulnerable community, not safe, individualistic self-imposed limits. APPLICATION QUESTION(S): Am I living a faith that goes beyond what is expected (doing enough to be “right with God”), reflecting a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit? PHILEMON 22-25: PHILEMON’S CHURCH Philemon’s Spirit-filled, life-giving community includes Apphia (likely Philemon’s wife), Archippus (likely the leader), Onesimus (his slave), Epaphras (an intercessor), Mark (now reconciled to Paul after 12 years), Aristarchus (a traveling companion of Paul based out of Colossae), Demas (who would later selfishly desert Paul), and Luke (Paul’s personal doctor and memoirist). Unnamed (See Colossians 4.7-18): Tychicus, Jesus (Justus), Nympha and the whole Laodicean church (or Ephesian church). APPLICATION QUESTION(S): How does my Spirit-filled, life-giving community challenge and support me to live beyond the bare minimum of obedience to the risky generosity (e.g., financial, relational, spiritual, etc.) of a maturing Christian? ACTIVATION STEPS From this study, prayerfully walk through the following steps: STEP #1 – TRUST THE SPIRIT TO DO MORE THAN EXPECTED (Philemon 21): Paul affirms Philemon’s faith and transformation. Ask the Holy Spirit: Where are You inviting me to go beyond what’s expected — to love, forgive, or serve in a way that reflects Your generously sacrificial heart? STEP #2 – INVITE COMMUNITY INTO YOUR GROWTH (Philemon 2, 23-24): Philemon’s community provided encouragement and accountability amidst a safe, Spirit-filled, life-giving atmosphere. Ask the Holy Spirit: Who are three specific individuals You have placed in my life who can challenge me, encourage me, and hold me accountable for what You are doing in my life? STEP #3 – OBEY FROM GRACE, NOT OBLIGATION (Philemon 25): Paul knows Philemon’s response will be one of gracious submission rather than dutiful obligation — from love rather than law. This powerful passage reveals that true reconciliation requires both repentance and forgiveness. PHILEMON 10-16: PAUL EXPLAINS WHAT HAPPENED Paul lays out how his and Onesimus’ relationship began and how he became a Christian. He also appeals to what was originally a selfish move on Onesimus’ part, God used for redemption — the idea being what the enemy schemed for evil, God schemes for good. He also reveals, as a Christian, the change in the relational dynamic between Onesimus and Philemon one of equals rather than of hierarchy while technically the hierarchy still remains in place (v. 16, “…more than a slave…”) APPLICATION QUESTION(S): How does this passage apply to someone who does not own a slave? What Gospel-centered Kingdom realities are present that challenge our own individualistic views of boundaries and cultural views of justice? PHILEMON 17-20: PAUL DEMONSTRATES THE GOSPEL ON BEHALF OF ONESIMUS As Jesus did on behalf of Philemon, Paul does on behalf of Onesimus — he pays a debt he does not personally owe. APPLICATION QUESTION(S): What does Paul’s willingness to cover Onesimus’ debt teach us as Christian about the cost of reconciliation with those who have wronged us? ACTIVATION STEPS From this study, prayerfully walk through the following steps: STEP #1 – EMBRACE THE COST OF RECONCILIATION (Philemon 18): True reconciliation, like Jesus demonstrated, often requires absorbing a personal cost. Ask the Holy Spirit: What Christian in my life am I unwilling to personally sacrifice for especially if I were to receive nothing in return? STEP #2 – SEE CHRISTIANS AS SIBLINGS CREATED BY GOD (Philemon 16): Just as Philemon is to view Onesimus as a brother challenge yourself to view other Christians who have wronged you as a fellow child of God as you are. Ask the Holy Spirit: How d

Audience: Philemon (slave owner), Apphia (possibly Philemon’s wife) & Archippus (possibly the lead pastor and house church host). Date: c.59-61 AD during imprisonment in Rome awaiting trial under Nero (cf. Acts 27-28). Colossians (c.59~61 AD), “Ephesians” (c.59-61 AD), Revelation (c.67~68 AD) 2.1-7 (Ephesus); and 3.14-22 (Laodicea). Paul addresses Philemon, Apphia, and Archippus — along with their whole house church — as a united community rather than just individuals. This introduction highlights the collective responsibility of believers in living out the gospel as it will personally apply to Philemon and his slave, Onesimus. In what ways do you personally fight against the temptation to be individualistic in your struggles and conflicts? PHILEMON 4-7: PAUL AFFIRMS OF PHILEMON Paul commends Philemon for his sacrificial love and demonstrated faith, especially for how he has refreshed and encouraged the believers in his house church. However, you do not get to decide what “good” means for your life and the lives of those you love. Ask the Holy Spirit: How can I change my definition of good to agree with Yours? STEP #3 – KNOW THAT YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER LOVES YOU (Romans 8.38-39): No circumstance, pain, or opposition that is a result of your trust in Jesus can change the fact that you are in God’s careful hands — He is working it out for your good and for you to conquer. Sin is anything in opposition to our nature or design; that is, living as the image and likeness of God. The Law simply revealed how we were missing the mark. We accept the gift (Jesus) the same way we accept the transgression (Adam): 1) choose to believe → 2) trust in what we believe → 3) actions empowered by what we trust. However, the fruit of these choices is vastly different — either life (Jesus) or death (Adam). APPLICATION QUESTION(S): When do you find it easier to rely on your own thoughts and conclusions instead of seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance and strength in a situation? ACTIVATION STEPS Take some time this week to prayerfully work through the following steps in light of Romans 5.1-21: STEP #1 – IDENTIFY THE SOURCE Take a moment to reflect on your daily choices. Are they rooted in an agreement with Adam’s self-reliance or in an agreement with Jesus’ righteousness? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where you might be operating out of fear, self-sufficiency, or wrong beliefs rather than trusting the Holy Spirit. STEP #2 – SHIFT YOUR TRUST Just as death entered through a belief in a lie, life comes through belief in the truth. Tell Jesus (out loud) about a specific circumstance where you are struggling. Ask Jesus what his perspective and truth is about that circumstance. STEP #3 – WALK IN ALIGNMENT Ask the Holy Spirit to give you one intentional action you can take that reflects the truth
