Soups on Hockey

It's finally here!!! Especially the next 10-14 days, the absolute best hockey of the year!

I love the title of this one because I'd be stunned if many....anyone...knows what I'm referencing. This is the fun of doing the Blender, an odd topic that goes a million different ways.

The title explains what I start talking about, and it goes a ton of different ways from there. I believe I end up talking about expansion. But this is why it's called the Blender and not "Soups stays on point".

This is a new concept I'm trying out, leaning into my ADHD and letting it buck. This is on the 2002 Maple Leafs, but I try to go down every single rabbit hole I come across while doing so. Hope you enjoy it, let me know if you don't! (seriously)

On this episode of the BS (stands for Big Show) I get into how the NHL players have zero interest in growing the game, how poorly the league markets the game, how it turns out I was right on Doug Armstrong the whole time, the disaster that is the Maple Leafs, my latest power rankings, and as always I end it with a bit of Oilers talk.

The Oilers for once do a tidy bit of business acquiring Connor Murphy from the Chicago Blackhawks yesterday. I talk about that, plus the smoke that is building about how the growing expectations of what the Oilers will do by Friday's trade deadline.

In today's game, we hardly have any player movement. NTC's and NMC's combined with cap restraints and GM's frankly being terrified to do something they may regret has all conspired to make trading virtually non exsistent in today's game. 30 years ago however, seemingly everyone got dealt. From the 1995 draft until the 1996 trade deadline, it truly was the NHL's version of the wild west.

I'm not sure how, but somehow Canada didn't win gold. Congrats to team USA, especially Connor Hellebuyck who stole them the gold medal. Obiously I talk about the game, Canada, seemingly disgraceful acts following the game, the fact that it's far from over with 4 more best on best tournaments coming in the next 8 years, and what the 2028 Canadian roster could look like.

Its the first time ever for NHL players to participate in the Olympics. And coming off the 1996 World Cup, things couldn't have been more up in the air than they were for this tournament in terms of who could win. The US and Canada were co-favourites, the Russians are always dangerous (though not icing their best team), as are the Swedes, and you never know who else could emerge....spoiler alert...it's the Czech's.In this episode I go through the roster selection, the snubs (in the moment), the misfortune's that Canada suffered along the way, and why they probably just simply had awful luck (not just against the Czech's). So come with me down this extremely painful walk down awful memory lane!

This is basically just a 30 minute rant on the Oilers. A lot of issues, a lot of finger pointing, seemingly no accountability.

One year after the dream team dominated, Brent Sutter is back with a completely different squad that while having home ice, enters the tournament as very real underdogs. It would become the masterpiece of his coaching career.

Canada was going for their 4th straight gold medal and 6th in the last 7 years. They are largely remembered for being a one man show, and that one man went on to become a Calgary Flames legend.

My thoughts on the deals today as I attempt to look at all angles here. Who won today? Who wins long term? What it means for Skinner, what it means for Kulak, and where the Oilers might have won biggest of all.

I come in peace Flames fans! I hate this for you. Things are such a disaster right now, and I couldn't stay quiet about it.

Tough to say with the ADHD Oilers, but for now it looks like things are back on track. Thoughts on the jerseys, Savoie, Podkolzin, and a potential Binnington trade.

Ol' Soupy bears look at the NHL and where everyone ranks as we head into US Thanksgiving.

It wasn't pretty, but the Oilers managed to pull it out Monday night vs the Blue Jackets after a nightmare performance on Saturday vs the Avalanche.

Between the Jays loss and the way the Oilers are playing, this isn't very fun.

After a brutal weekend, the Oilers got back in the win column with a respectable 60 minute effort.

That was hideous...but they somehow pulled it out to win two straight. I'm not even sure we've seen the Oilers D game yet, and they're 4-3-1. Good sign.

On this edition of the BS, I lead off with a lot of baseball specifically the Jays and the ALCS! I get a little political as I bitch about the woke agenda, Carter Hart signing in Vegas, Elias Pettersson being underwhelming yet again, Matthew Schaefer and the 2030 Team Canada blueline, a quick look at the Canadian teams and as always the Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers are now on a 3 game losing streak heading into the final game of this road trip (kind of) on Tuesday in Ottawa.

The Oilers are 2-0-1. Given how the last 3 October's have gone, I'll gladly take it!

My favourite show of the year! Although, after over 2 hours of attempting to keep my energy and enthusiasm up (not 1 break if you can believe it), I am spent! But I hope you enjoy this show as I look at every organization from 32 all the way up to number 1. And my opinion on this is all that matters so this is THE list to decide it!...

The team Canada camp invites, expansion talk, a long overdue re-cap of the 1st round of the draft, and a look at how boring this off-season has been for transactions.

Thoughts on Hulk Hogan's passing, the Oilers changes to the coaching staff, and the player that the Oilers HAVE TO go after, despite the backlash that would accompany that move if it were successful.

The two biggest stories in the hockey world yesterday got my full attention for this edition of the short shift!

Nearly 2 hours of me talking, hopefully you can gut through it! On this edition of the BS I take a look at the latest trades, what is happening with the new CBA, who should be doing what this off-season, as well as a big look into the draft tomorrow night, and of course I look at what the Oilers are up to.

2nd straight year of being so close, yet so far away. This time there is no doubt, the Panthers were the better team. Shockingly to me, but they were. The Oilers group still haven't figured out that they need to find a killer instinct, and they need to figure out how to truly dig in when things aren't going their way. This podcast is mostly about what I believe the Oilers need to do this off-season. Now more than ever they need a very shrewd summer and fix every leak possible if they want any shot at winning the Cup the next few seasons.

This is the best shot at this that the Edmonton Oilers are going to have for a few seasons, and they're blowing it. Can they "drag 'em back to 'Berta" one more time? Can they overcome a 3-2 series deficit for the 3rd time in 4 years?

Apparently I'm only doing these if the Oilers win? What a schmuck homer I am!! But they somehow did get out of Sunrise with a split and now it's a best of 3 for the Cup, once again with home ice advantage.

Oilers win 4-3 in OT, my thoughts. Riveting stuff I tells ya...

It's the playoffs, and in the playoffs you sometimes have to battle sickness as I did during this show. Not my best work, but you get my thoughts on the Stanley Cup Final rematch and I waste very little time getting into why I don't think this is going to be a very close series this time around.
