Still Loading #395: Medal of Honor: Allied Assault w/ Justin Grandfield

Punch a Nazi month is coming to a close once again and to round it out this year I am joined by games writer and journalist Justin Grandfield to talk about Medal of Honor: Allied Assault! What makes the old Medal of Honor games so special? Are they able to walk they fine line of reverence for our past while also not glorifying it? Is it still a kickass first person shooter!? Justin and I dissect all of this and more in the finale of Punch a Nazi month. This game was the Medal of Honor game that had eluded me for many years. I only had the console games in the series and was desperate to get my hands on this and play it. When I finally did it did not disappoint. Play. This. Game. Still Loading #394: The Saboteur w/ Matt Storm

In World War II the entirety of France was occupied by the Nazi's. The Saboteur, instead of looking at that time period through the lense of the Allied Expeditionary Force, looks at it through the eyes of the people who lived it. I'm joined by friend of the show Matt Storm to chat about the 2009 open world game The Saboteur. A game where you take control of the character Sean Devlin, an Irish race car driver and mechanic, as he exacts his revenge on the fascists that killed his best friend. What starts out as a simple revenge mission turns into something much larger as he fights to free Paris from the Nazis. Matt and I ADORED this game and we had a lot of fun chatting about what makes it so great. We also chat about why it seems to be so overlooked and why that may have been. If you want to punch some Nazis you cannot go wrong with this game. No spoilers for a while, so you can get a feel of the game without having to worry about the story being spoiled. Still Loading #393: Return to Castle Wolfenstein w/ Dave Pietrangelo

Punch a N*zi month is back! Three new games all about punching some goddam fascists are being covered and to kick it off I am joined by returning guest, Dave Pietrangelo from Remember 64, to talk about the sequel to the OG FPS game. We are having fun storming the castle with Return to Castle Wolfenstein.  Return to Castle Wolfenstein was the first true sequel of the original Wolfenstein 3D since that game had an expansion but not a full-on sequel. Thankfully, even though this game wasn't developed by ID, it is freaking great. This game sticks to a simple FPS formula but it really works. Dave and I had a ton of fun chatting about this one and if you haven't played it yet go punch some N*zis and give it a try. Still Loading #392: Perfect Dark w/ Jiggylookback

In the summer of 2000 the Nintendo 64 was on it's way out. The PlayStation 2, the sucessor to the N64 rival PlayStation, was coming out later that year and the GameCube was a still over a year away from release. The summer of 2000 was probably the last chance the N64 had of seriously competing in the console market before the next console generation was in full swing and boy howdy did Rare release a game to help usher out the N64 on a high note. Joining me this week is YouTuber Jiggylookback to talk about Rare's "sequel" GoldenEye, Perfect Dark. The game was a technical marvel for the time and really pushed the console to it's limits. Perfect Dark took what Rare learned from GoldenEye and expanded upon it. Not just both in terms of tech but also story and atmosphere. Jiggy and I had a great time chatting about Perfect Dark, why it's still looked on so fondly, where it could improve and also we ask the question... Why the name Elvis? Still Loading #391: Yoshi's Island w/ Eric Gess and Dave Pietrangelo

The finale of Mario Month 2026 is here and it's on a game where you don't play as Mario!? Sort of? I am joined by Dave Pietrangelo of Remember 64 and Eric Gess of The Unlockables to talk about Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Or better known to all of us normies as, Yoshi's Island. Yoshi's Island is jam packed with whimsy, inventive gameplay, great mechanics and also the worst sound known to man, baby Mario crying. The three of us break down all we love and don't love about the game, about how Mario's crying is PTSD inducing for 3 grown men with kids of their own now and how this game, even all these years later, continues to leave a mark on gaming. Still Loading #390: Super Mario World w/ Zach from Classic Gaming Brothers and British Bond Addict

When Nintendo transitioned from 8 bit to 16 bit, there was a lot of risk. It was not a sure fire thing that the public would adopt a new system, especially one that did not play the games for the existing Nintendo console they already owned. To help entice consumers they had to come out of the gate swinging and there was no harder punch to throw than launching the system with their flagship game mascot. Mario. For the fourth episode of Mario Month this year I am joined by Zach from the Classic Gaming Brothers podcast and Chris (aka the British Bond Addict) to talk about Mario's jump into the 16 bit generation. We are talking Super Mario World. We discuss what is so special about this game, about the endless Mario 3 vs World debate, the music, the visuals and a whole bunch of nostalgia. Still Loading #389: Super Mario Bros. 3 w/ Ty Schalter and Darren Hupke

Hey Paisanos! It's the 3rd episode of Mario Month 2026! This week I am joined by Ty Schalter from the FunFactor podcast and Darren Hupke from Pixels and Polygons to chat about Super Mario Bros. 3! The true (?) sequel to Super Mario Bros. Mario 3 lives in rarified air as a contender for best Mario game along with Super Mario World (which will be next week's episode!). This debate will be forever ongoing but something that is not up for debate is just how amazing and influential this game was and still is. Ty, Darren and I had so much fun getting to dissect this game and it's mechanics. We also chat about it's visuals, music and some of it's development history! I don't have a huge personal history with this game in terms of amount of time spent playing it but I do credit this game for being the game that helped me fall in love with video games. The game that made me feel like I was controlling a cartoon on the TV. I don't think I'll ever fully be able to articulate how much this game means to me for that. We have arrived at the last Bond game being covered in this Road to First Light series. This week on the show we are talking James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing and joining me are two friends who are giving me everything and taking nothing, Bill Barber and Thrak from the 3DO Experience podcast among many others. This one had some spicier takes than normal on the show. I know this game is beloved by a lot of fans but this one did not do it for me. Thrak and Bill were kind enough to help balance out my views on it though. We talk about what this game does well and what it doesn't, we talk about how much of a Bond game is it really and of course we talk about the wild story that seems to be a staple of the Bond games thus far. Still Loading #382: Gravity Rush w/ Alex from Low Five Gaming and Soccr

The Vita is an interesting system. It feels like it's a system that for those who love it REALLY love it and everyone is neutral at best. What has always interested me about the Vita were all of it's gimmicks and addons. The touch back touch screen, front facing camera, front facing touch screen, back facing camera, gyro controls and so many more. But what interests me the most about it are the games for the system that somehow marry all those gimmicks together in a cohesive package. Gravity Rush is one of those games. Helping me shift gravity on this episode are first time guests Alex from the Low Five Gaming podcast and community member Soccr. We chat about what makes Gravity Rush so special, how it translated it's handheld controls with all of the gimmicks to the home console that doesn't have all that, just how damn cool the world of Gravity Rush is and so much more. Still Loading #381: Ranking Game Console Controllers w/ Mick Arcade and Chris Coplien

We are kicking off 2026 with a giant episode! Joining me are friends of the show Chris Coplien from the Retro Hangover Podcast and Mick Arcade from Nerd's Cant to help me rank game console controllers. The inspiration for this episode came from Bitmap Books, who was kind enough to send all of us a review copy of their recently released book Trigger Happy. Trigger Happy is a visual compendium of game controllers so we figured what better way to celebrate videogame controllers than to do a big ranking episode. We ranked 19 controllers from the NES up to the PS4/XB One/Switch. If the episode already wasn't about 3 hours long we may have considered ranking more. Anyway. Which controller is the highest ranked? Who has the hottest controller take? Listen to the episode and then share your thoughts on our rankings or share your own with us on our socials! What happens when Mario goes to space? And what happens when he has to dump his emergency pasta rations!? In this mini episode Dexter Morrill and I talk about all of this and Koopa's "meteoric balls". This was probably one of the wildest episodes of the Super Show we have seen yet. Still Loading #378: The Super Nintendo Entertainment System w/ Nadia Oxford and Dan Greenberg

The Super Famicom, known as the Super Nintendo (SNES) here in North America, came out in Japan 35 years ago this year. It was Nintendo's successor to the dominant NES and it marked a real turning point for the games industry at the time. Not just in the evolution of game design but also in the market itself. With the SNES and rival Sega Genesis (Mega Drive outside of North America) fighting for market dominance, it sparked a console war that is still talked about today. Helping me break this down and more are friends of the show Nadia Oxford and Dan Greenberg! Still Loading #377: Dropout TV Games w/ Matt Storm

Every now and then I have an topic that's not necessarily related to games but I am justing DYING to talk about on a podcast. Sometimes I get lucky and can find a loophole to shoehorn that topic onto the show with a loose connection to video games. This episode is on a topic exactly like that. Joining me for this one, returning guest to the show, is Matt Storm. Matt joins me to talk about Dropout TV, an internet streaming service that just so happens also to have a few browser games that are connected to their shows. Matt and I have a ton of fun talking about why we love Dropout TV, what makes it so special as a streaming service and why the games are... Ok they aren't great, but they are games dammit. We are sending Diablo back to hell.... again... Shane Selterre of the Retro Hangover Podcast returns to help me save Sanctuary again as we discuss Diablo 2. Diablo 2 is a very personal game for me. It was one of my earliest PC LAN party gaming experiences and it served as major game for me and a lot of my friends growing up. But what makes Diablo 2 special outside of my personal nostalgia for it? Shane and I discuss all of that in this episode. We look at what changed between the original Diablo and this one. We look at how this game is basically became the template for ARPG games for years. We talk about so much and yet only scratch the surface. Who knows, maybe Shane will be back for us to dive further beyond the surface, further into the depths of Hell. Still Loading #375: Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 w/ Ray Barnholt and Andrew Kinsey

Just because it's November doesn't mean we still can't enjoy the summer. In this episode of Still Loading I am joined by Ray Barnholt from the No More Whoppers podcast (and occasionally Retronauts) and Andrew Kinsey from The EXP Point to talk about the summer of 1975, specifically the summer as seen in the game Boku no Natsuyasumi 2: Umi no Bouken-hen also known as My Summer Vacation 2. Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 is a game unlike anything else that I've played. I had heard about the game a few years back on Retronauts (which Ray was on and is the one who spoke about it) and was curious about what it was like. But the main problem is that the game was never localized in english, at least officially. And then earlier this year I found out about a fan translation from a Hilltop Works that came out in November of 2023 so I figured it was finally time to dive in. Ray, Andrew and I break down whats great about this game, why it makes us all feel so nostalgic and overall what we got out of our experiences. Which summer are you nostalgic for? Episode 2 of this year's Backlog Month features a game very different from last week's. Backlog month this year is RPG heavy and one of those RPGs we are looking at is Live A Live. Backlog month 2025 kicks off with a big one! It's Castlevania. I covered Castlevania a LONG time ago on the show but that was before I had beaten it and it was very early in my podcasting career. So I figured putting it on my backlog month poll earlier this year was a perfect way to take another crack at this iconic NES game. But... A special game requires and even more special guest. Joining me on this episode is author, YouTuber, podcaster and Castlevania expert, Jeremy Parish. We are talking about the game Gris. Gris was developed by Nomada Studios and released in 2018. It explores the stages of grief in a very beatiful and haunting way. A huge part of video game history is context. Context surrounding a game's development, context surrounding a game's release, context of the time and place the game was made during. Context informs how we interpret the past. This week on the show I am joined by author and journalist Ross Benes to talk about his book "1999: The Year Low Culutre Conquered America and Kickstarted Our Bizarre Times." We discuss what about the late 90's has informed so much of our present, how that culture affected the games that came out and how the games themselves were part of that percieved "low culture" at the time. Still Loading #362: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker w/ Supertendo

This week we set sail for adventure here on the Still Loading Podcast. Joining me is new friend to the show Supertendo to talk about the originally maligned but now beloved Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Despite being more beloved now, Wind Waker had a very polarizing launch back in 2002 when it came out. This was not the Zelda most fans were looking for at the time, myself included. But a gutsy choice from Nintendo back then has proven it's staying power. Wind Waker is significantly more popular now than it was back when it released and I would like to feel like that is largely because it's intended audience grew up a bit and played the game on it's own merits and not based on their expectation. Still Loading #361: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle w/ TroytlePower and Thrak

Whip sounds abound in this episode of Still Loading. I'm joined by TroytlePower of Geek to Geek Media and Thrak from the 3DO Experience to go on a rip-roaring adventure of punching some nazis. And no, this is not a continuation of Punch a Nazi month, but it is kind of a spiritual sequel to it. We are talking about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle this week. The three of us chat about our first experiences with the iconic archeologist, how this game surprised us in ways we weren't expecting, bizarre evangelical media and much more! **Please note this episode was recorded before Microsoft's announcement of massive layoffs so it was not brought up in this episode. Still Loading #360: Final Fantasy X-2 w/ Rick Firestone

Back in 2020 I did an episode on Final Fantasy X. Five years later there is finally a sequel to that episode where I talk about the sequel to that game! Joining me this week is Rick from Pixel Project Radio to help me change in and out of numerous costumes as we discuss the first ever direct sequel in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy X-2. X-2 expands the world of FFX in many clever ways while also introducing a really unique battle system that I enjoyed a decent amount. Rick and I had a lot of fun dissecting what makes this game unique, how it feels to play it all these years later and ultimately what we both felt was it's downfall. Still Loading #359: Retro Gaming in High Fidelity w/ Try from My Life in Gaming

As time goes on the games and the consoles we grew up with have a hard time keeping up with modern technology. Plug in your NES or Sega Genesis into a modern HD TV and it just doesn't feel the way you remember it. You may ask, did my games always look and play like this? The answer no. Well sort of... Returning to the show today is my good friend Try from the YouTube channel My Life in Gaming, and we do a pretty thorough overview of what to do to play your retro game systems and retro games on modern televisions. We talk about video signals, resolutions, upscaling, emulation of all kinds and much more. If you ever wanted to learn about how to get the most out of your old game consoles, use this episode as a jumping off point! Singularity Minus Twelve w/ Karl Hörnell

BONUS EPISODE! For a surprise bonus episode, I sat down to chat with Karl Hörnell to talk about his recently released speculative fiction novel Singularity Minus Twelve. Karl is also a game designer who was fairly prolific on the Commodore 64 back in the 80's along with web based gaming in the later 90's/early 00's. His novel Singularity Minus Twelve tries to imagine our world in the future with how AI may be integrated into our lives. It's also a freakin' fun read where it's like the Dirty Dozen (you know that 1967 movie) meets rogue AI. In this gaming adjacent episode (hence why it's a bonus episode) we discuss how his game development career influenced his writing and the themes he wanted to incorporate into the book and what does being sentient really mean.
