    To Degreed or Not Degreed!

I sat down with Carlos, a PhD candidate and professional in higher education, to explore the evolving landscape of career preparation for today’s students. Our conversation focused on the central question: Should students pursue a college degree or consider alternative pathways? We discussed the value of traditional college degrees, particularly in fields where they remain essential, such as healthcare, education, and engineering. Carlos highlighted the benefits of higher education, including critical thinking development, professional networking, and long-term career mobility. At the same time, we examined the growing appeal of trade schools, certifications, and skill-based learning. With lower costs, shorter time commitments, and strong job prospects in skilled trades and tech, these alternatives offer compelling options for students seeking faster, more direct entry into the workforce.Ultimately, we agreed there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The best path depends on a student’s goals, interests, financial situation, and desired industry.
