Here is your history lesson heading into tonight's Showdown with the Boilermakers. We begin all the way back on this day in 1902, when Fielding hurry up Yost was in year two of his point a minute Dynasty after a Flawless 1901 season, racking up more points than anyone anyone had ever witnessed and shutting out every opponent, he still had a point to prove. He had yet to clash with Wisconsin and the Badgers had claimed the first two Western Conference titles and matched Michigan's undefeated run to share the crown in 1901. So now in 1902, Yost finally got his shot at our friends from Madison and it was a colossal showdown, hailed as the grandest game in Western football history. The stage was perfect, a neutral battle Soldier Field in Chicago, packed with a record shattering 22,000 fans, a new standard for a crowd at a conference game. Ahead of this thrilling battle for Paul Bunyan, let's flashback 50 years to October 25, 1975, when the Big House roared as the Indiana Hoosiers rolled into town. Even our beloved host Ira Weintraub, a mere one day old, could sense that these Bloomington boys stood no chance against his would be mighty Wolverines. Michigan had dominated a few teams like they've owned Indiana, dropping just three games to the Hoosiers since 1968, a legacy of maze and blue supremacy. This clash would be no different and showcased two coaches etched in history for wildly different reasons. On the west sideline stood General Glenn E. George Patton Schembechler in his seventh season at Michigan, already a coaching legend, and he had his Wolverines perennially in a national and conference title hunt. But that season wasn't without heart stopping moments when it felt like everything could slip away. One such day was November 18, 2023 in College Park, Maryland. In 1901, Michigan faced a crisis due to a long forgotten foe, the University of Chicago, founded in 1890 with an ambitious plan to rival Ivy League schools in the Windy City. They knew having a football squad was key to their vision, and I mean big time football. To compete with the dominant Wolverines from Ann Arbor, they H. Stagg, a coaching pioneer. And by 1900, the Maroons had turned the tables and began beating the Blue in the matchup. In this fierce rivalry desperate for a turnaround, Ann Arbor rolled the dice on an outsider, a fiery West Virginian named Fielding H. Yost. It was that year that we welcomed Glenn Edwards Schembecher Jr. Soon to be known to fans in Ann Arbor and nationwide as simply BO. On this day, exactly 56 years ago, a young, untested coach with a weird last name and Buckeye roots stepped onto the Michigan sideline for the first time. Hired by athletic director Don Canham from Miami of Ohio, BO was a bold choice. The first true outsider to lead the Wolverines since Fritz Chrysler arrived from Princeton over three decades prior. 1980 was a special year in Michigan football history and perhaps one that hopeful Wolverine fans might appreciate this season 45 years later. On September 13, 1980, the season opened with Northwestern, who were in the midst of a 34 game losing streak. Bo's teams had routinely pummeled our purple friends over the years. The only real coaching strategy seemed to be to take the foot off the gas late in the annual blowout. But in 1980 it was unique and expectations of Bo's 11th season Ann Arbor, were relatively low. So it's no surprise that Michigan figures deep in many of Ohio State's traditions. At the start of the season, I don't think anyone had today's game circled as a red letter, critical must win. But this game is every bit of that. In the last couple of days, as you mentioned, Ira, we've had an undeniable surge in energy in the program. But now bowl eligibility and extra practices may have taken on an even greater meaning, particularly if Underwood and other players become early enrollees and are allowed to practice. But one player, no matter how great, does not a team make. While the first domino may have fallen, the rest have to be in line to complete the chain reaction. How strange it is for Michigan to have gone from being resoundingly criticized for having a poor NIL game to now being criticized for being at the fore of it. And add to that revenue sharing next year, and this could be one wild December for transfers and one wild ride. to the finish line in recruiting.
