One is driven by urgency and truth-telling, while the other focuses on intention and timing. This episode explores why pace can feel personal, how people respond differently to purpose, and what it takes to stay connected when you’re not moving the same way.

This scene starts with a reading lesson…and somehow ends with emotional chaos, passive-aggressive cucumber slicing, and at least one completely inaccurate accusation.So, you know…a normal day at the campsite.But underneath all the side eye and misunderstandings, something deeply human is happening. People are reacting, projecting, misreading each other and doing that thing we all do where we assume everyone else is the problem.Spoiler alert: they’re not.This one’s about what our brains do when we’re overwhelmed, why we get weird around people we care about, and how fast things can spiral when nobody realizes what’s actually really going on.

In this episode of Gutted, we look a scene 4 of episode 5.  We begin by the Jordan River, where a wild prophet jumps out of reeds and two brothers respond in completely opposite ways. Humor meets confrontation and in the middle, stands Jesus holding it all together. We see that almost every group has these roles…the one watching for danger, the one moving toward relationship, the one asking questions, the one speaking hard truth, and the one steady enough to hold it all without letting it fall apart.

But after witnessing a miracle that doesn’t fit his worldview, Simon finds himself face to face with something far stranger than any enemy he’s ever fought.What happens when the strength that once defined you is no longer the strength the world needs?

In this episode of Gutted, we step into Scene 2 of Season 2, Episode 5 of The Chosen. Jesse can now walk, but the real tension isn't about the miracle, it's about what Jesse's healing means. When identity shifts faster than institutions can adapt, miracles don’t just restore bodies… they disrupt entire systems.

For the past seven months, this podcast has been growing alongside me and what I’ve realized is that there’s far more living inside each scene than we can hold in a single or multiple episodes. Psychologically. Spiritually. Relationally.So we’re slowing down.Instead of covering everything at once, we’re taking the story one scene at a time ... one thread at a time. Each will stand on its own, but together they’ll still build the larger arc.Today we begin Season 2, Episode 5 — Spirit. Scene one.

This episode continues the story of Jesse and his brother Simon, now called "Z" . As Jesse lays by the pool waiting for a miracle, "Z", now a Zealot, travels to Jerusalem to complete a mission and what unfolds  strains their reunion. Meanwhile, in a shelter designed by Nathaniel, Jesus and His followers prepare for the Feast of Tabernacles. The Pharisee Shmuel makes an appearance to lobby against false prophecy and a new character is introduced. Atticus Amelius, A Roman spy.  Questions about tradition, belonging, and impossible futures emerge and the answers are not simple or easy. Finally, at the Bathesda pool, a miracle transpires, that will forever change the lives of these two brothers. 

This episode follows two brothers who, shaped by the same losses, are pulled in opposite directions. One learns how to survive in a world that barely notices his suffering, while the other learns how to fight a world that refuses to protect what he loves. It’s a story of anger, hope, and shame….of strength that demands an outlet, and the pain of waiting when there are no other options. Over the span of twenty-five years, one becomes a man defined by duty and purpose. The other is worn down and trampled until only the remnants of his original strength remain. When their paths once again cross,  neither is prepared for what an encounter with the Messiah will undo and remake.

It’s the end of the day and everyone is tired and cranky… Little James shows uncharacteristic frustration…which is about more than it appears on the surface. Mother Mary arrives and changes the emotional temperature of the camp and a game of “would you rather” results in honest confessions about desire, pressure, and identity.  Bandages are torn off old wounds and anger threatens to fracture the group. 

As a line of people waiting to be healed grows longer under the hot sun, Philip and Matthew discuss where Matthew should begin in his study of Torah. Philip points him toward the Psalms. What follows is a quiet unraveling of the belief that closeness to God is earned through effort, understanding, or excellence. Later, the camp fills with exhaustion, unanswered questions, childhood expectations of the Messiah, and the strain of endless need. 

This episode picks up the morning after Jesus and Philip’s late-night conversation. Andrew, learns that John the Baptizer remembers him with pride, which totally makes his day. Mary offers to teach Ramah how to read and write so they can study Torah.Matthew writes down everything Jesus says and does and Simon reacts, fearing it will attract danger and old enemies.Then , Jesus names Simon’s instinct-driven leadership and encourages him to slow down a bit. Mary and Ramah ask Matthew for help and we see Thomas’s Jealousy emergeAnd in Caesarea Philippi, Philip finds Nathaniel crushed by shame and pulls him toward Jesus with one steady invitation: come and see.Jesus speaks to Nathaniel’s lowest moment and Nathaniel's defenses collapseFinally, urgent news arrives: people are gathering in Syria and Nathaniel gets a job offer that starts immediately.

In this episode, Nathaniel leaves his dreams and plans in a pile of ash under the fig tree. Jesus and Phillip finally get to have their talk and Phillip makes sure Matthew gets the credit for his hard work.

In this episode we see Nathaniel's struggle as God is silent. We see Phillip as he teaches Matthew to strip wood and we see Matthew as he struggles...out loud....with his past.

Philip and Matthew’s search for firewood turns into a conversation about tension and identity. Matthew finally voices frustration that’s been building for years as he grapples with his past and his place in the group. Philip offers a clear reminder that once you’ve met the Messiah, that becomes your defining moment, not your history. It’s an honest look at formation, friction, and why growth never happens alone.

In this episode, Jesus gains 2 new followers. Simon has a run in with jealousy after discovering Andrew has a friend..that isn't him. Matthew receives the gift of acceptance and friendship and one of Jesus' new followers has a serious crisis of faith.

Big James, John and their anger makes an appearance outside the walls of Samaria. Jesus meets their fury with a lesson they’ll never forget. In Sychar’s synagogue, Jesus calls John “disciple” for the first time , a name that reshapes both his identity and their relationship. What follows is laughter, conviction, and the quiet collision of humanity and divinity as Jesus says, “I am who I am.”

Following an amazing meal at Melech's house, Jesus and his followers stay at the home Photina and Neriah and apparently a "ghost" . A miracle unfolds the next morning and tension brews over breakfast. Big James and John go to find Jesus, hoping he will take their side in an argument.

This episode follows Kafni’s painful goodbye; Big James and John's shock when they discover who owns the field they planted and finally, we see what happens when shame meets mercy face to face?

While Jesus is teaching in the market, His disciples are engaging in "sibling rivalry", which continues into the next day while they are all on a shopping trip. ....Photina delivers a message and Jesus has a honest conversation with Ramah's father.

This episode opens with grief and ends with a storm. In between, fields are plowed, roles are negotiated, roads are traveled, and wagons are fixed — and somewhere in the middle, a group of followers temporarily misplace the Messiah.

Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, and what begins as a "simple" request for water turns into a conversation that breaks through barriers of culture, shame, and exclusion. In this episode, we look at how her story shifts from isolation to hope, how Jesus reframes worship as “spirit and truth,” and why her testimony matters more than we often realize. Along the way, we explore the psychology of shame, trust, and belonging and how this encounter still speaks to us today.AND.....at the end.... an awesome announcement about the next episode! This episode opens in a Samaritan market and ends with an announcement, that sends Jesus’ followers into panic mode.  In between, there’s peace, judgement, control, identity, grief and confusion. It’s gonna be fun!

The disciples break camp with laughter and banter , but Simon’s testiness sets the tone. At the synagogue, Nicodemus receives an honor… and an unexpected attack. By the end, one is truly seen, one is healed, and one steps even deeper into faith and obedience.

This episode spans centuries…water where none should exist…a woman carrying a burden heavier than her jar…religious leaders who just don’t get it…and one who “gets it” more than most will ever know… a dinner party rooted in calling… and a Roman official, wound tighter than an eight-day clock.

This episode brings two invitations, that change everything. One on a rooftop…..where Nicodemus realizes that the answers, he’s spent a lifetime chasing, won’t come through logic alone. The other in a tax booth …when Jesus calls Matthew to becomes one of the most unlikely of disciples

In Part Two, Matthew goes to the home of his parents…hoping or guidance or at least information…. we take a closer look at how people on the Autism Spectrum, manage stress and frustration and back at Simon’s house…another lesson about trusting instincts.

This episode does some serious time travel.  We start with Moses in the dessert… we travel to Capernaum, where Matthew clings to routine while working on relationship ….Nicodemus….tries to hold his world together….. Quintus acts like…well Quintus…Jesus teaches his students about generosity ….Mary becomes more trusting of her instincts…and Simon wrestles with issues of worth….again…

In part 2...the crowds grow... the roof comes down, and compassion crashes into the chaos. Sins are forgiven...a paralytic walks... and Shmuel nearly explodes. Matthew climbs a ladder (carefully) and Nicodemus pleads for a secret meeting, Miracles multiply... tensions rise..and hope spreads faster than fear.

As the disciples try to figure out how to camp...SImon steps on the bread and Little James regrets not packing better sandals.Jesus speaks fluent Egyptian and.Nicodemus is trying to hold a staff meeting without anyone staging a coup.... Meanwhile, Jesus lays hands on shame itself, Simon cares for his feverish mother-in-law with surprising tenderness, and Compassion goes viral. And not even Shmuel can stop it.

Jesus performs his first public miracle at a wedding in Cana. But, this episode is more about the transformation of people.  Their journey from who they were to who they will become and what it means to be chosen
