The Foundation Hangout
by Pastor Brian
In this show, we will take a look at real-life situations and events and determine how to respond to them. We will build a solid foundation on morality and life decisions by hanging out in the word of God, that's right, The Bible, bringing a biblical worldview to real-life situations. Based on Matthew 7:24-27, We will talk about the struggles of life and how having a solid foundation in Jesus Christ has helped us overcome those struggles, though it may not be in the way we think or want. We will look at the outcomes of decisions made in the flesh vs made in the Spirit.

Ep 44. Misusing the Word of God part 3: Special Guest Skip Cherryholmes
About the Podcast This episode of The Foundation Hangout, hosted by Pastor Brian and featuring Skip, concludes a three-part series focusing on why believers look for loopholes or gray areas in Scripture. The discussion centers on the heart's intent when trying to justify personal actions against biblical principles. They explore how focusing on these debates distracts believers from the main point of Scripture and listening to the Holy Spirit.Key Takeaways (03:02) Focus on Heart's Intent: The primary focus of seeking loopholes or gray areas in Scripture is often driven by a desire to justify something already present in one's life. Jesus emphasized the intent of the heart, stating that what is in the heart dictates what comes out of the mouth, suggesting that a heart prioritizing the world will seek scriptural loopholes.(04:47) Context and Scriptural Intent: Context is crucial when interpreting Scripture, especially when dealing with laws that were ceremonial or specific to a certain time period. While these sections offer learning opportunities, they are not always directly applicable to current culture; ignoring context leads to misinterpretation and justification of sin.(10:07) Scripture Reveals God's Character: Reading Scripture from cover to cover reveals God's character, a primary attribute of which is principle. Trying to justify actions based on scriptural gray areas or silence ignores the overarching principle founded in the rest of Scripture regarding God's will for one's life.(11:40) The Deceitful Heart: Jeremiah 17:9 states that the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, meaning only God truly knows it. Believers must focus their minds on God because their own hearts can lead them to make wrong decisions, often driven by emotion rather than truth.(16:10) Grace is Not License for Sin: The question of whether believers should continue in sin so that grace may abound must be answered with a definite 'Certainly not,' as stated in Romans 6:1. While grappling with sin is inevitable due to the surrounding world, the heart's desire should be to abstain from it.(16:50) Gray Areas and Personal Battles: Areas of Scripture that appear gray are often intended to apply specifically to individual circumstances and personal battles. The justification process for these gray areas reveals what a person needs to be 'dying of' daily; trying to fit God into one's current lifestyle, rather than fitting the lifestyle into God's intent, is a form of idolatry.(28:54) Building Up the Brethren: When dealing with lifestyle issues where Scripture is not explicit or has gray areas, a key principle is considering how one's actions build up or potentially cause stumbling for other believers. A Christian's lifestyle provides an example, and if it offers justification for sin to others, it violates the principle of building up the brethren.(34:29) The Purpose of Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 emphasizes that all Scripture is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness, equipping the man of God for every good work. People often avoid digging deeper because Scripture is sharp, pointing out flaws, and the sinful nature resists having its wrongdoings brought to attention.(53:15) Humility in Understanding: To overcome misusing Scripture, Christians must trust the Lord with all their heart and lean not on their own understanding, as Proverbs 3:5 advises. Developing humility involves accepting that one's current understanding is only a fractional glimpse and being comfortable with being called out by God through His word.(51:56) Effort in the Relationship: What a person will be judged on is the effort they put into the relationship with Christ, not just relying on someone else's teaching or understanding. Just as a student is graded on their own test answers, believers must strive to dig deeper into the word, as this effort reveals more of God's character.

Ep 43. Misusing the Word of God part 2: Special Guest Skip Cherryholmes
About the Podcast In this episode of The Foundation Hangout, Pastor Brian and Skip Cherryholmes continue their discussion on the misuse and misunderstanding of Scripture, focusing on the issue of cherry-picking verses. They explore how both believers and non-believers can take scriptures out of context to justify their actions or condemn others, and emphasize the importance of understanding the original text and cultural context to properly interpret the Bible.Key Takeaways (01:20) Cherry-picking scripture: Cherry-picking scripture involves selectively using verses to support a particular viewpoint while ignoring the broader context and meaning of the passage. This can lead to misinterpretations and the distortion of God's message. It is important to consider the original intent and audience of the scripture to avoid misapplication.(04:13) Understanding scripture in context: Understanding scripture requires considering the historical, cultural, and linguistic context in which it was written. This includes examining the original language, the intended audience, and the overall message of the passage. Taking verses out of context can lead to misinterpretations and the distortion of God's message.(07:19) Accountability in interpreting scripture: When interpreting scripture, it's crucial to maintain accountability and avoid using it to manipulate or control others. This involves recognizing one's own biases and limitations, and being open to correction and alternative perspectives. It also means applying scripture consistently and fairly, rather than selectively using it to justify one's own actions or condemn others.(13:53) The importance of original text: Studying the original text of scripture can provide deeper insights into the intended meaning and nuances of the message. The original text was written to be very specific and literal. It can reveal the specific and intentional wording used by the authors, which can be lost in translation.(20:17) Misinterpretation of prayer: The concept of asking in Jesus' name is often misinterpreted to mean that God will grant any request made with that phrase. However, the Bible indicates that there are criteria for answered prayer, including glorifying God, bearing fruit, and experiencing fullness of joy. Prayer should be rooted in a relationship with God, not just a means to get what we want.(30:19) Temptation and God's provision: The saying "God won't give you more than you can handle" is a misinterpretation of 1 Corinthians 10:13, which actually states that God will provide a way of escape from temptation. This means that when faced with trials and tribulations, believers should rely on Christ for strength and guidance, rather than trying to overcome them on their own. Temptation itself is not a sin, but succumbing to it is.Youtube License CodeWIFUUA4QSULIRN3FWebsitehttps://thefoundationhangout.transistor.fm/Redbubble StorePastorBrianB.redbubble.comTeepublic Storehttp://tee.pub/lic/thefoundationhangout

Ep 42. Misusing the Word of God: Special Guest Skip Cherryholmes
About the Podcast In this episode of The Foundation Hangout, Pastor Brian and special guest Skip Cherryholmes discuss the misuse and misunderstanding of scripture. They explore how both the lost and the saved can misinterpret scripture and miss its intended purpose in life. They emphasize the importance of humility and proper context when interpreting the Bible.Key Takeaways (00:04:55) Misusing Scripture as an Excuse: Many Christians use the literal writing of scripture as an excuse to see what they can get away with, assuming that if something isn't explicitly forbidden, it's permissible. This approach contradicts the intent of the heart emphasized in the Sermon on the Mount. New believers, especially those without strong Christian upbringing, may struggle with surrendering certain habits or desires, seeking to excuse them if not directly addressed in scripture.(00:08:00) Judging Others and Hypocrisy: The passage "judge not, lest you be judged" is often misused to discourage any form of judgment. However, the scripture actually warns against hypocritical judgment, where one is quick to condemn others for flaws they themselves possess. It calls for self-reflection and addressing one's own shortcomings before pointing out the faults of others, ensuring a fair and consistent standard of judgment.(00:11:14) Humility in Approaching Scripture: Approaching scripture with humility is crucial for proper understanding and application. Without humility, one is likely to misinterpret or miss the true meaning of the text. Being open to correction and willing to be called out allows for growth in righteousness and alignment with God's will, rather than seeking superiority over others.(00:15:19) Personal Comfort vs. Growth: Society's emphasis on personal comfort makes it challenging to help individuals grow in Christ. Maintaining a relationship with Christ can be uncomfortable, especially in the beginning stages, as it requires confronting and changing undesirable behaviors and beliefs. Embracing discomfort through scripture and a walk with Christ is essential for spiritual growth, though it's not a popular sentiment in today's culture.(00:20:14) Satan's Tactics and Misinterpretation: When discipling someone, be aware that the adversary will try to present counter opinions to scripture, which may seem more appealing to those new in faith. Satan may use misinterpretations of scripture to convince people that it's not trustworthy. For example, the Bible describes things that happened, like slavery, but that doesn't mean the Bible prescribes the behavior.(00:25:57) God's Character and Revelation: Reading the Bible from cover to cover reveals God's character, not just isolated incidents. God doesn't approve of everything that is written in the Bible. The events that are written are due to the sin in the world. Wisdom is referenced as a woman in the book of Proverbs, which shows that the Bible is not misogynistic.YouTube License CodeLNOUIQRTFFRALCLVWebsitehttps://thefoundationhangout.transistor.fm/Redbubble StorePastorBrianB.redbubble.comTeepublic Storehttp://tee.pub/lic/thefoundationhangoutHey Everybody Podcasthttps://open.spotify.com/show/1muCUPES72xKKIgO6qovNg?si=cad00142494e49dd

Ep 41. How do we forgive those who wont ask for it?
About the Podcast In this episode of The Foundation Hangout, Pastor Brian and Savannah discuss the topic of forgiveness, specifically focusing on how to forgive those who do not ask for forgiveness or do not think they have done anything wrong. They explore biblical perspectives and personal experiences to provide guidance on extending forgiveness and showing the love of Christ.Key Takeaways (00:00) Forgiveness without Repentance: Jesus teaches that we should be willing to forgive an innumerable amount of times, reflecting God's unlimited forgiveness towards us. While it's important to forgive, it may also be necessary to create distance from those who continually wrong us to protect ourselves. The act of forgiving someone who doesn't seek it is about showing the love of Christ and entrusting the situation to God.(05:54) Mercy and Forgiveness: The Bible emphasizes the importance of showing mercy to others, as those who show no mercy will not obtain it when they need it. Forgiveness should come from a genuine place in the heart, mirroring the forgiveness we receive from God. Forgiving others, even when they don't repent, demonstrates the love of Christ and allows God to work in the situation.(09:47) Love and Forgiveness: Forgiveness is a product of loving someone, even if you don't like what they did. It's about prioritizing your relationship with God over the hurt caused by others. By forgiving, you give the situation to God and allow Him to work in both your life and the life of the person who wronged you.(11:51) Personal Walk with Christ: The ability to forgive and move on is a part of one's personal walk and relationship with Christ. Pride and selfishness can hinder forgiveness, while humility allows us to see the situation from God's perspective. Forgiveness is not about condoning the wrong but about releasing the bitterness and allowing God to work.(12:43) Examples of Forgiveness: Jesus pleaded for the forgiveness of those who crucified Him, and Stephen asked God to forgive those who stoned him, demonstrating forgiveness even when the wrongdoers did not seek it. These examples show the importance of showing love and forgiveness, even to those who may be ignorant of their sin.(20:12) Practical Steps to Forgiveness: To forgive someone who hasn't asked for it, lean on God, pray for understanding, and ask for help to forgive. Recognize that holding onto bitterness affects your relationship with God and others. Surrender control to the Lord and trust that He will work in the situation.(31:58) Love Your Enemies: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. This is an act of forgiveness. By loving and forgiving our enemies, we show them the love of Christ and give them over to the Holy Spirit, allowing God to work in their lives.(33:56) Be Merciful: Be merciful, just as your Father in heaven is merciful. Extending forgiveness and grace shows our relationship with Christ. By forgiving those who don't ask for it, we glorify God and grow closer to Him. It's about God, not about us.(35:07) Die to Self: Forgiving those who don't ask for forgiveness is a way to die to ourselves and our fleshly desires. Holding onto bitterness is a fleshly desire that is not of the Spirit of God. By forgiving, we break down barriers between ourselves and God and allow Him to work in our lives.(38:40) Ultimate Goal: Reconciliation: While seeking reconciliation is important, we should still forgive even when the other person doesn't repent. By forgiving, we show them the love of Christ and leave the rest up to God. Give the hardship to God, as He knows best and will take care of it.Youtube code9XT2MN0SDIUR1Q6H Websitehttps://thefoundationhangout.transistor.fm/Redbubble Storehttps://www.redbubble.com/people/PastorBrianB/shopTeepublic Storehttp://tee.pub/lic/thefoundationhangout

Ep. 40 Drowning out God's voice with Self-Righteousness
About the Podcast In this episode of The Foundation Hangout, Pastor Brian and Savannah discuss how to overcome drowning out God's voice with self-righteousness. They use the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector from Luke 18:9-14 to illustrate the dangers of pride and self-sufficiency. They emphasize the importance of humility, focusing on Christ, and staying grounded in scripture to maintain a right relationship with God.Key Takeaways(00:58) Pride Prevents Hearing God: Pride is identified as the primary obstacle to hearing God's voice, leading to self-righteousness. Even Christians can fall into the trap of taking credit for things that are ultimately God's work. Self-sufficiency, thinking we have everything figured out, causes us to rely on our own efforts instead of God's mercy.(06:51) Works Do Not Equal Righteousness: The Pharisee's boasting about fasting and tithing highlights the misconception that works make us righteous. Righteousness comes from Jesus Christ, not from our own efforts. Jesus came to show that while the law reveals God's character, it cannot be perfectly obeyed, and righteousness is a gift from God through faith.(13:59) Humility and Focus on God: Overcoming self-righteousness requires humility and shifting the focus from ourselves to God. Like the tax collector, we should acknowledge our sinfulness and rely on God's mercy. Jesus said that apart from Him, we can do nothing, so maintaining humility involves recognizing our dependence on God.(16:51) Staying Grounded in Scripture: Studying scripture is essential for hearing God's voice and maintaining humility. While reading the Bible is important, it should be done with spiritual discernment and a focus on retaining and applying the information. Overstudying without retention or failing to implement the teachings in daily life can be counterproductive.(22:05) Prayer and Listening: Prayer and listening are crucial for hearing God's voice. While God can speak audibly, He typically speaks through scripture, aligning our thoughts with His word. Seeking accountability from others can also help us stay focused on God and avoid self-righteousness.(27:48) Love and Humility: Love for others, exemplified by Jesus' sacrifice, helps us maintain humility. Jesus gave up everything for us, and remembering this should inspire us to be humble and recognize that everything we are able to do is because of Him. We should ask God to be merciful to us, acknowledging that we don't deserve His grace.(32:02) Final Thoughts: Dependence on Christ: Final thoughts emphasize that we are all sinners in need of a Savior and should love our neighbors. Remembering that apart from Christ, we can do nothing helps us lean on God for everything and hear His voice more clearly. The Holy Spirit compels us to do things that align with the word of God.Youtube Code for episodeFTKFWFZEZA0ESE1PWebsitehttps://thefoundationhangout.transistor.fm/Redbubble StorePastorBrianB.redbubble.comTeepublic Storehttp://tee.pub/lic/thefoundationhangout

Are you Ripe for God: Growing closer to God in our Daily walk.
About the Podcast In this episode of The Foundation Hangout, Pastor Brian discusses how Christians can grow closer to God in their daily lives, especially at the beginning of the year. He emphasizes the importance of abiding in Christ, spending time in prayer and studying the Bible. He encourages listeners to reflect on their relationship with God and make a commitment to prioritize Him in their lives. Key Takeaways(00:38) Abiding in Christ: Growing closer to God involves abiding in Christ, which means having an intimate relationship with Him. This includes spending time with Him daily through prayer, studying the Word, and praising Him. Colossians 3 advises setting our minds on heavenly things, focusing on Christ to draw strength and produce fruit, which is evidence of our connection to the vine.(06:05) Producing Fruit Through Christ: Producing fruit as Christians is only possible through Christ, who is the vine. God prunes us through trials and tribulations to help our faith grow and draw us closer to Him. This process allows us to produce more fruit, demonstrating the evidence of our relationship with Christ, who provides the necessary nutrients for growth.(09:33) Importance of Gratitude: It's important to regularly thank God for His blessings, such as waking up each morning, the ability to walk, and the gift of sight and hearing. Praising Him and crying out to Him in personal time, not just during church services, is essential for developing intimacy with God and deepening our relationship with Him.(15:34) Applying God's Word: After praying for God to reveal Himself through scripture, it's crucial to apply what He reveals to our lives. Without application, our prayers are in vain. We must be willing to put into action what God is telling us to produce fruit that glorifies Him and demonstrates our growing relationship with Christ.(16:42) Dependence on Christ: Without Christ, we can do nothing; He is the sustainer of life, enabling us to function and accomplish anything. We must remember that He provides everything we need, like water and nutrients, and brings the increase. The fruit we produce should glorify God and reveal Christ, showing our growth and sanctification.(20:14) Self-Reflection and Growth: We should ask God to search our hearts, know our anxieties, and reveal any wickedness within us, guiding us in the way everlasting. Identifying areas where we fall short and committing to improvement through Christ is essential. Even small improvements demonstrate growth in the Lord, sustained by the vine.Websitehttps://thefoundationhangout.transistor.fm/Redbubble StorePastorBrianB.redbubble.comTeepublic Storehttp://tee.pub/lic/thefoundationhangoutYouTube Code for episode7JRJ1RPFLOHJ7QQ2

Ep 38 The Full Armor of God: The Sword of The Spirit
In this podcast episode, Pastor Brian and Savannah discuss the Sword of the Spirit as part of the Armor of God, emphasizing its dual role as both an offensive and defensive weapon against temptation and the wiles of the devil. They explore how Jesus used the Word of God to overcome temptation and how believers can apply scripture in their lives to defend against spiritual attacks and live righteously. The hosts stress the importance of having a personal relationship with Jesus and studying the Bible to effectively use the Sword of the Spirit.Key Takeaways(02:45) The Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, can be used both offensively and defensively to combat the devil's fiery darts, enabling believers to cut away temptations and defend themselves against spiritual attacks. Just as a Roman sword has a blade on both sides, the Word of God cuts in either direction, ultimately reaching the heart and transforming lives.(05:54) Jesus overcame temptation by quoting scripture and correcting the devil's misinterpretations, demonstrating the importance of knowing the Word of God in context and not twisting it to fit personal desires. The devil often attempts to distort scripture, a tactic seen as early as Genesis with Eve, so believers must be vigilant in understanding and applying scripture correctly.(13:59) Memorizing and hiding God's Word in the heart is crucial for resisting temptation, as demonstrated in Psalm 119:11, and exemplified by Jesus in Matthew 4. This practice equips believers to recall scripture during spiritual battles, allowing the Holy Spirit to bring the right verses to mind for defense and offense.(18:08) Having a relationship with Jesus is essential for desiring to hide God's Word in one's heart and knowing how to apply it, as it's through this relationship that believers gain the ability to overcome temptation and put on the full Armor of God. This relationship is not about religious obligation but about personal connection and growth, which enables believers to rely on God's strength during times of distraction and temptation.(28:08) Putting on the Armor of God requires action, not just prayer, and involves applying the principles of righteousness, truth, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God in daily life. Believers must be equipped for battle, understanding the risks involved in spiritual warfare and committing to use the armor to defend against the devil's attacks and carry the gospel to others.(25:29) Second Timothy 3:16-17 emphasizes that all scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness, equipping believers for every good work. This means that the Bible is beneficial for knowing true doctrine, defending against false teachings, living rightly, and being thoroughly equipped for all that God calls us to do.

Ep. 37 The Full Armor of God: The helmet of salvation.
About the Podcast In this episode of The Foundation Hangout, Pastor Brian and Savannah discuss the helmet of salvation from Ephesians 6:17, emphasizing its importance in protecting our minds from the devil's attacks. They explore practical ways to put on the helmet of salvation daily, focusing on renewing our minds, rejecting doubts, maintaining an eternal perspective, remembering the victory we have in Christ, and finding our hope in Him.Key Takeaways (02:45) The devil constantly tries to infiltrate our minds, not just with thoughts of evil actions, but also with doubts and feelings of inadequacy. It is important to actively put on the helmet of salvation by trusting in it completely, just as a Roman soldier had to put on their helmet to protect their head, the most vulnerable part of their body.(06:13) Renewing our minds daily is essential, especially when facing challenging situations. This involves placing our minds back on Christ and striving to make the right decisions, showing the love of Christ even in disagreements. Logic and reasoning, as understood in the context of God's knowledge, play a role in renewing our minds and aligning our thoughts with God's perspective.(08:41) Rejecting doubts that arise from circumstances is crucial, as human beings are sensory creatures who tend to disregard what they cannot fathom with their five senses. It is impossible to have faith and doubt simultaneously, and God rewards our faith by helping us firmly place the helmet of salvation, enabling us to believe in what appears impossible.(14:18) Maintaining an eternal perspective is vital when life crashes around us, and remembering that our salvation is the most precious gift we have received can help us weather life's storms. By choosing to live by the motto, "If it doesn't have eternal significance, it's not important," we can focus on what truly matters and find strength in our faith.(19:09) Remembering that victory is already accomplished through Christ is essential, as we are considered dead to sin but alive to God. This eliminates many opportunities for Satan to entrap us, as choosing sin is no longer an option for new creatures in Christ. By recognizing ourselves as new creations, we effectively cut off many avenues of failure and embrace the victory we have already won.(25:21) Finding all our hope in Jesus is paramount, as our helmet is most effective when we treasure what it represents. Our salvation should not share importance with earthly things, and when pleasing the Lord is our supreme delight, we eliminate many of Satan's lures and render his evil suggestions powerless. We should surrender our whole hearts and lives to Him, demonstrating our love and gratitude for His sacrifice.Websitehttps://thefoundationhangout.transistor.fm/Redbubble StorePastorBrianB.redbubble.comTeepublic Storehttp://tee.pub/lic/thefoundationhangout

Ep. 36 The Full Armor of God: The Shield of Faith
About the Podcast In this episode of The Foundation Hangout, Pastor Brian and Savannah discuss the Shield of Faith, drawing from Ephesians 6:16. They explore how faith acts as a defense against doubt, pride, and temptation, which they describe as the "flaming arrows of the evil one". They emphasize that faith comes from hearing the word of God and trusting in Jesus Christ.Key Takeaways(03:11) The shield of faith is a defensive weapon against doubt, pride, and temptation, which are described as the flaming arrows of the evil one. These arrows are anything that distances people from God and His will, and taking up the shield of faith is essential for protection.(04:01) The Roman shield, which is the kind of shield that Paul is referencing, was about six feet tall and covered the entire body. Roman soldiers would interlock their shields to form a tortoise-like shell, providing comprehensive protection from incoming attacks, including flaming arrows.(06:32) Faith is defined as confidence in what is hoped for and assurance about what is not seen, as stated in Hebrews 11:1. It is not faith in oneself or circumstances, but faith in God and His promises. This faith comes from hearing and understanding the word of God.(08:02) Temptation arises when people believe what it offers is better than what God has promised. Satan, as the master of deceit, can make things appear appealing, even seemingly from God, necessitating discernment through prayer and reliance on one's relationship with Jesus.(09:42) Remembering that there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus helps build faith and overcome the shame that Satan tries to bring after sinning. God is faithful and doesn't change, and Christians are free from condemnation through Jesus.(11:03) God is sovereign and righteous, and even difficult events pass through His sovereign hand. While it's not always possible to understand why God allows certain things to happen, He often uses evil for His glory, turning negative situations into something beautiful and meaningful.(14:27) Ephesians 1:3-14 describes the blessings of being chosen by God, adopted as sons, and sealed with the Holy Spirit. These verses offer hope and faith in the Lord's promises and the inheritance that is received through Jesus Christ.(17:03) It is important to read the Bible and know God's word, as faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Turning to scripture and praying to God increases faith and helps combat the flaming arrows of the devil.(20:03) Technology, despite its negative aspects, has made the Bible more accessible, fulfilling God's plan to use evil for His glory. The Bible remains the number one best-selling book of all time, and reading it, even starting from Genesis, can reveal unexpected insights and increase faith.(22:02) God doesn't need people, but He wants them and loves them, choosing them before the creation of the world. Taking up the shield of faith involves recognizing one's identity as someone saved by Jesus and adopted into God's family, with an incorruptible inheritance.(24:32) Salvation is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, not through works, and it requires repenting of sin and placing trust in Him alone. When accused by Satan, faith chooses to believe that Jesus has redeemed us and that there is no more condemnation.(28:18) The things Satan attempts to use to discourage people can become tools in the hands of God. Recognizing God's work in turning negative situations into something that glorifies Him increases faith and helps people remember to rely on Him in times of trial.Websitehttps://thefoundationhangout.transistor.fm/Redbubble StorePastorBrianB.redbubble.comTeepublic Storehttp://tee.pub/lic/thefoundationhangoutGot Questions linkhttps://www.gotquestions.org/shield-of-faith.html

Ep. 35; The Full Armor of God: The Shoes Of The Gospel Of Peace
In this episode of The Foundation Hangout, Pastor Brian and Savannah discuss the shoes of the gospel of peace, which is part of the armor of God described in Ephesians 6:15. They explore the two purposes of the shoes: providing strength and stability to stand firm against attacks and enabling believers to walk and spread the gospel message. They emphasize the importance of knowing and applying the gospel in daily life, relying on God's grace, and sharing faith with others(00:18) The shoes of the gospel of peace serve two purposes: to provide strength and stability, enabling believers to stand firm against attacks, and to empower them to walk and spread the gospel message. This means having a solid foundation in Jesus Christ and being ready to defend one's faith, as well as actively sharing the gospel with others.(03:50) True peace comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ, who is the Prince of Peace, and it involves being free from anxiety and worry, knowing that everything will be okay through faith in Him. This peace is grounded in the understanding that believers have been saved from hell through God's grace and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.(04:44) Readiness implies constant vigilance and preparation for battle, requiring believers to study the enemy's strategies, be confident in their own, and stand firm in their faith. Just as a soldier's battle shoes provide balance and prevent them from falling, the shoes of the gospel of peace help believers maintain their footing and withstand Satan's attacks.(07:37) Knowing and understanding the gospel is essential for portraying and living it out, as it provides the foundation for confidence, strength, and stability in one's faith. Without knowing the message of the gospel and understanding sin, it is impossible to effectively share and embody the gospel in daily life.(09:08) The shoes of the gospel of peace prepare believers for the rough terrain of spiritual life, enabling them to withstand the fiery darts of the evil one. Just as sturdy shoes protect the feet from jagged rocks, the gospel of peace equips believers to face challenges and trials with strength and resilience.(13:33) Sharing one's faith strengthens one's footing and deepens their connection to the foundation of Jesus Christ, as it involves digging deeper into that foundation and inviting others to stand on it as well. The devil seeks to silence believers and prevent them from sharing their faith, but standing firm and sharing the gospel message makes one's stance even stronger.(15:09) Memorizing and hiding God's word in one's heart is vital for facing tough times and resisting temptation, as it provides a source of strength and guidance to fall back on. Quoting scripture to Satan, just as Jesus did, is a powerful way to combat doubtful thoughts and stand firm in one's faith.(17:30) To apply the shoes of the readiness of the gospel of peace, believers should ask the Lord daily to remind them of His gospel work, set their security and identity in His work, and surround themselves with scripture about their place in Christ. Removing any input that steals their sense of security in Christ is also crucial.(21:23) Good works are the result of salvation, not a requirement for it, and believers should not trust in their own deeds to earn their way into heaven. Instead, they should set their security and identity on Christ's finished work on the cross, recognizing that it is by His grace alone that they are saved.(26:15) Carrying the gospel message everywhere one goes involves stepping into the devil's territory and digging one's feet deeper into the solid foundation of Jesus Christ. This strengthens one's stance, enables them to fight the devil head-on, and overcome the attacks he throws their way, knowing that they can overcome through the Holy Spirit. Passion Week Special: 7 Statements Jesus Made On The Cross
About the Podcast This podcast, hosted by Pastor Brian and Savannah, explores the seven statements Jesus made from the cross during Passion Week. The discussion delves into the theological and cultural significance of these statements, reflecting on Jesus' sacrifice, fulfillment of prophecy, and the message of salvation.Key Takeaways(03:12) Jesus' first statement, 'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do,' highlights his compassion and mercy, as he repeatedly asked for forgiveness for those crucifying him. This plea extends beyond those present at the crucifixion to all humanity, emphasizing the universal need for forgiveness.(05:47) The second statement, 'Today, you will be with me in Paradise,' was spoken to a repentant thief on the cross. This demonstrates that salvation is based on faith in Jesus, not works, as the thief had no opportunity for good deeds but was promised eternal life through his belief.(08:16) Jesus' third statement, 'Woman, behold your son,' and 'Son, behold your mother,' reflects his concern for his mother, Mary, even in his final moments. By entrusting her to John, Jesus fulfilled his familial responsibilities and adhered to cultural and moral laws.(10:01) The statement 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' signifies the profound separation Jesus experienced from God the Father as he bore the sins of humanity. This moment marked an unprecedented and deeply painful spiritual separation due to God's holiness and the weight of sin.(17:48) When Jesus said, 'I thirst,' he fulfilled the prophecy from Psalm 69, choosing to fully experience the suffering of crucifixion without numbing his pain. This statement underscores his humanity and the physical toll of his sacrifice.(21:44) The declaration 'It is finished' (John 19:30) is a cry of victory, signifying that Jesus had completed his mission to pay the debt of sin in full. The term 'to tell us die' was an accounting term meaning a debt had been paid, symbolizing the fulfillment of God's plan for salvation.(31:08) Jesus' final statement, 'Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit,' signifies the completion of his earthly mission and his trust in the Father. This moment aligns with biblical numerology and emphasizes Jesus' control over his death and awareness of his resurrection.(33:00) The podcast concludes with a call to repentance and faith in Christ, emphasizing the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus for salvation. Listeners are encouraged to reflect on Jesus' sacrifice, share their testimonies, and engage with the community. The Full Armor of God: The Breastplate of Righteousness
About the Podcast This podcast, hosted by Pastor Brian, explores biblical teachings and their application to real-life situations, focusing on the 'Breastplate of Righteousness' from Ephesians 6:14-17. The episode emphasizes the importance of relying on Jesus' righteousness, seeking God's will, and living a life aligned with His standards. Pastor Brian provides practical advice, scriptural references, and personal reflections to encourage spiritual growth and discipleship. Key Takeaways (04:40) The 'Breastplate of Righteousness' symbolizes the righteousness given by Jesus at the cross, which protects believers from evil and deception. It is not human righteousness but Christ's righteousness that provides true spiritual defense. (08:06) Believers are encouraged to seek God's kingdom and righteousness first, as promised in Matthew 6:33, which assures that needs will be met when priorities align with God's will. (09:03) King David's example in Psalm 51 highlights the importance of repentance and pursuing God's righteousness, demonstrating a heart that seeks to align with God's standards. (11:03) Asking 'What did Jesus do?' rather than 'What would Jesus do?' helps believers focus on Jesus' actions and teachings as a model for righteous living. This approach emphasizes being rooted in Scripture to understand God's truth. (13:20) Human righteousness is insufficient, as noted in Isaiah 64, and believers must rely on Jesus for true righteousness. This reliance requires daily submission to God's will and guidance. (15:31) Wearing the breastplate of righteousness leads to purity of heart and righteous actions, which protect against temptation and spiritual attacks. Believers are encouraged to evaluate their lives and make changes to align with God's will. (16:54) Misusing spiritual armor through carelessness, unbelief, or disobedience can hinder its effectiveness. Believers are urged to align their prayers and actions with God's will to fully utilize His protection. (18:23) Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane serves as a model for submission to God's will, even in difficult circumstances. Believers are encouraged to trust God's plan and seek His guidance in struggles. (22:40) True discipleship may require sacrificing comfort for righteousness. Stories of individuals who made significant life changes to follow God's calling illustrate the blessings of obedience. (26:11) The breastplate of righteousness protects vital spiritual 'organs' like the heart and soul from attacks. Believers must consciously put on this armor daily to withstand challenges and glorify God in their actions. (29:51) Relying on personal righteousness or societal norms can distort moral truths. Believers are encouraged to focus on God's standards and seek forgiveness for areas of disobedience or carelessness. (32:38) The speaker emphasizes the necessity of repentance and faith in Christ for salvation, explaining the concept of sin and the importance of turning to Jesus for forgiveness and guidance. (34:37) A heartfelt prayer for repentance and salvation is shared, encouraging listeners to seek Jesus' lordship and live a life dedicated to Him. The speaker invites those who make this decision to reach out for support. What Are The Methods Of The Devil? Knowing The Methods We Have To Fight Against
About the Podcast This episode of The Foundation Hangout podcast, hosted by Pastor Brian and Savannah, explores the methods the devil uses to lead believers away from God, including deception, accusation, temptation, and division. The discussion is rooted in biblical teachings, particularly Ephesians 6:11, and emphasizes the importance of putting on the armor of God to resist these tactics. The episode concludes with a call to focus on Christ, seek salvation, and remain spiritually prepared. Key Takeaways (02:54) The devil employs deception as a primary tactic, making evil appear good and leading people to believe in falsehoods. Examples include societal acceptance of issues like gender identity and abortion, which contradict biblical teachings. (07:20) Accusation is another method used by Satan, where he brings up past sins to destabilize believers' faith. This tactic can lead to discouragement and division, emphasizing the need for forgiveness and reliance on God's grace. (14:00) Temptation is described as an enticement to sin, with examples from the Gospel where Jesus was tempted by Satan. The devil appeals to desires such as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, aiming to lead believers astray. (18:20) Isolation is highlighted as a tool of temptation, particularly for introverted individuals. The importance of community is stressed, as God provides relationships to strengthen and support believers in their spiritual journey. (21:32) Division is a key strategy of the devil, where seeds of unforgiveness, anger, and bitterness disrupt harmony within families, churches, and communities. Believers are encouraged to focus on love and peace to counteract these negative influences. (27:02) The episode emphasizes the necessity of putting on the whole armor of God to combat the devil's tactics, including deceit, accusations, temptation, and division. Awareness and spiritual preparation are crucial for resisting these attacks. (31:04) Believers are reminded of their identity in Christ and the power of God, which is greater than any adversary. The book of Job is referenced to illustrate that even Satan is ultimately under God's control. (36:15) The episode concludes with a call to salvation, encouraging listeners to repent, trust in Christ, and seek a personal relationship with Him. A prayer of repentance is shared as an example for those seeking guidance. Step out of the lifeboat; finding true safety in the middle of the storm
About the Podcast This episode of 'Foundation Hangout' with Pastor Brian explores the theme of facing life's storms through a biblical lens, focusing on the story of Jesus walking on water from Matthew 14:22-33. Pastor Brian discusses the challenges of maintaining faith during difficult times and emphasizes the importance of trusting in Jesus as a source of peace and salvation. Key Takeaways (03:34) The story of Jesus walking on water illustrates how He approaches us during our storms, offering peace and rescue even when we feel overwhelmed or afraid. (06:28) Jesus' calm presence during the storm contrasts with the disciples' fear, symbolizing His ability to provide peace and control amidst chaos. This highlights the importance of recognizing divine help in our struggles. (08:11) The disciples initially failed to recognize Jesus, mistaking Him for a ghost, which reflects how we often overlook God's presence in our own challenges despite calling out for help. (11:32) Peter's request for confirmation before stepping onto the water demonstrates the human tendency to seek evidence of God's presence, but Jesus' command to come emphasizes that faith should not require constant proof. (12:45) Peter was able to walk on water as long as he focused on Jesus, but he began to sink when he became distracted by the storm, illustrating the importance of keeping our eyes on Christ during life's challenges. (16:05) Jesus invites us to step out of our comfort zones and trust Him as our sanctuary and rescuer, reminding us that faith should be placed in Him rather than in temporary safety measures. (19:06) Trials and storms in life often persist to strengthen our faith, and while Jesus can respond immediately to our cries for help, we are encouraged to rely on Him even when relief is delayed. (20:30) Peter's realization of his need for Jesus and his call for help serve as a reminder to keep our focus on the Savior during difficult times, as He is always ready to support and guide us. (22:57) Jesus' immediate rescue of Peter strengthened the faith of those around him, affirming His identity as the Son of God and demonstrating His control over life's storms. (23:20) The speaker encourages listeners to confront their personal storms with faith, repentance, and trust in Christ, emphasizing that Jesus' sacrifice offers salvation and eternal life. (25:34) Listeners are reminded to keep their focus on Jesus during storms, as He is not afraid of the challenges they face and remains in control, ready to guide and rescue them. (27:14) The episode concludes with a prayer of gratitude for God's presence during life's storms and an invitation for listeners to share their testimonies and consider accepting Jesus as their Savior. Should we pass Judgement? What does the Bible actually say?
About the Podcast This podcast episode, hosted by Pastor Brian and Savannah, explores the biblical concept of judgment, focusing on the often-misquoted verse 'Judge not that you be not judged' from Matthew 7:1. The discussion emphasizes the importance of self-reflection, righteous judgment, and approaching others with love and humility when addressing sin. Key Takeaways (01:53) The phrase 'Judge not that you be not judged' from Matthew 7:1 is frequently misquoted and taken out of context. The hosts stress the importance of understanding the surrounding verses, which emphasize self-reflection before judging others. (05:53) The metaphor of a 'plank' in one's own eye versus a 'speck' in another's eye highlights the need for self-awareness and repentance before pointing out others' faults. This encourages listeners to examine their own actions first. (08:28) The Bible does not prohibit judgment entirely but calls for righteous judgment. John 7:24 encourages judging based on righteousness rather than superficial appearances, requiring a deep understanding of God's Word. (10:09) Wrong types of judgment include superficial judgment (based on appearances), hypocritical judgment (condemning others for sins one also commits), harsh judgment (lacking mercy), and self-righteous judgment (judging from a place of pride). (22:25) The story of Jesus and the adulterous woman illustrates the importance of compassion and humility in judgment. Jesus reminded the Pharisees of their own sins before addressing the woman's actions. (23:30) When confronting sin, Christians are encouraged to approach others with love and humility, especially if they have experienced similar struggles and repented. This fosters understanding and avoids alienation. (26:45) Responding to hostility with love and prayer can be more effective than harsh reactions. The example of an evangelist responding to negativity with kindness demonstrates the power of compassion in spreading the gospel. (29:48) Christians are called to practice righteous judgment and discernment, confronting sin gently while upholding biblical teachings. Self-reflection and fairness are essential in ensuring judgments are rooted in love. (31:05) The podcast concludes with a prayer for guidance in practicing righteous judgment and for the salvation of those who are lost. Listeners are invited to repent, trust in Jesus, and share their testimonies of faith. What New Years Resolution Should you make?
About the Podcast Pastor Brian and Savannah discuss the appropriateness and motivations behind New Year's resolutions for Christians, emphasizing spiritual growth and alignment with God's will. Key Takeaways (00:00) Pastor Brian believes making New Year's resolutions is acceptable if they are made for the right reasons, such as honoring God and maintaining health, rather than self-glorification. (01:05) The key verse for the episode is 2 Corinthians 13:5, which encourages self-examination to ensure one is in the faith and to test one's relationship with Christ. (02:11) Pastor Brian emphasizes the importance of reflecting on personal growth in faith over the past year, acknowledging human imperfection while encouraging continual sanctification. (06:10) Resolutions should focus on spiritual growth, such as committing to pray more, read the Bible, or attend church regularly, and should come from a sincere desire to deepen one's relationship with God. (07:13) Christians should seek God's wisdom in determining which resolutions to pursue, recognizing that some goals may take longer than a year to achieve. (08:01) Spiritual growth is a continuous process, and some resolutions may remain the same year after year as believers strive to refine themselves. (08:35) Memorizing scripture is an example of a long-term resolution that serves to strengthen one's faith and resist temptation, reinforcing the idea that spiritual goals are ongoing. (08:47) The speaker reflects on their scripture memorization from the previous year, questioning the motivation behind it and emphasizing the importance of hiding God's word in their heart to resist temptation. (10:23) Resolutions should align with God's will and avoid leading to temptation, using the example of weight loss goals. (12:42) Spiritual goals should be viewed as daily commitments rather than annual resolutions, emphasizing the importance of living in the present. (14:26) Accountability within the church community is important, as it can help individuals stay on track with their spiritual goals. (15:20) The need to rely on God for strength and support, especially during challenging times, and the importance of repentance is emphasized. (17:40) The primary goal for the upcoming year should be to deepen one's relationship with God rather than merely setting resolutions. (17:48) Actionable steps to achieve spiritual growth include increasing prayer and Bible reading, and having accountability partners to help maintain these commitments. (20:27) Societal messages often promote independence, but true strength comes from reliance on Jesus and His sacrifice. (22:00) God often places people in our lives to provide encouragement and support, reinforcing the idea of community in faith. (23:15) When achieving spiritual goals, humility is emphasized over pride, acknowledging that any success is due to God's help. (24:40) Self-examination regarding motivations behind actions and resolutions is necessary, as misaligned goals may lead to failure. (26:03) Psalm 37 is quoted to emphasize trust in the Lord and the importance of delighting in Him to receive the desires of one's heart, reinforcing the idea of building a relationship with God. (27:15) While God promises to fulfill the desires of our hearts, it may not happen immediately. Commitment to the Lord and trust in His timing are necessary. (29:06) For the upcoming year, setting a primary goal of growing closer to God is suggested, with specific resolutions such as praying more, reading the Bible, and engaging with the church community. (34:27) Salvation comes through repentance and faith in Christ alone, and listeners are encouraged to seek a personal relationship with Jesus. (30:10) The speaker concludes with a prayer, thanking God for blessings and asking for guidance in growing closer to Him in the coming year. (11:07) Prayer became crucial for Luke, especially after being diagnosed with Chiari malformation following a lengthy period of misdiagnosis. He initially perceived prayer as a formal plea but found it to be a source of strength. (12:46) Luke faced emotional turmoil when he learned that surgery was necessary due to the severity of his condition. He describes the overwhelming experience of being an 11-year-old facing brain surgery. (14:05) A significant shift in Luke's understanding of faith and prayer occurred when he instinctively prayed after returning home from the doctor's appointment. This moment marked a deeper connection with God. (16:18) Luke's mother prayed daily for the surgeon's wisdom, and Luke felt a surprising sense of peace about the upcoming surgery. He experienced a peace that transcended understanding, even amidst anxiety. (19:46) Luke's recovery journey post-surgery involved regaining strength and balance. He was discharged from the hospital after just three days, which was shorter than expected. (20:14) Luke's mother took a proactive approach in reaching out to other families affected by similar conditions, highlighting the lack of information and support available to them. (22:27) Luke shares his struggles with feelings of insecurity and the desire to prove his strength. He ultimately finds victory in his faith and recovery. (24:54) Luke reflects on the timing of his recovery, acknowledging that God's timing often differs from human expectations. He recognizes that the outcomes have been better than he could have imagined. (27:08) Luke encourages others dealing with Chiari malformation, emphasizing that everyone faces challenges, whether they have a medical condition or not. (27:58) Luke shares a story about a woman struggling to pray for her sick husband, illustrating that one does not need to find the perfect words to communicate with God. The simplicity of prayer is highlighted as a powerful tool for seeking help. (29:38) Prayer is described as a personal practice that can take many forms. Luke shares his method of writing down fears and gratitude, followed by a period of silence to connect with God. (30:18) Luke encourages listeners to focus on faith and prayer without the need for immediate change or resolution. Trusting in God is highlighted as the most crucial aspect. (31:02) Luke reflects on the story of Paul, who, despite his troubled past, became known for his contentment and faith. Paul’s journey illustrates that one can find peace and purpose even in difficult circumstances. The First National Thanksgiving
About the Podcast In this special Thanksgiving edition of the 'Foundation Hangout' podcast, Pastor Brian and co-host Savannah discuss the historical and spiritual significance of Thanksgiving. They emphasize gratitude, the biblical foundations of the holiday, and the importance of recognizing God's role in the nation's history. Key Takeaways (00:00) Thanksgiving is significant because it commemorates the pilgrims' quest for religious freedom and their willingness to endure hardships for their beliefs. (01:17) The verse of the episode, 1 Thessalonians 5:18, encourages giving thanks in all circumstances, highlighting the importance of gratitude in both good and challenging times. (03:28) The traditional narrative of Thanksgiving taught in schools often overlooks the pilgrims' gratitude to God for their journey and the assistance they received. (11:26) The first national day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed by the Continental Congress on November 1, 1777, following the victory at Saratoga during the Revolutionary War. (12:39) Thanksgiving has become commercialized over the years, overshadowing its original meaning of gratitude and repentance. (15:26) The original Thanksgiving proclamation was about uniting the nation in repentance and recognizing the need for a savior, emphasizing the biblical foundations of the country. (20:37) The National Day of Thanksgiving was established to honor God, seek repentance for sins, and request His help for independence and peace. (21:28) Thanksgiving should focus on gratitude for Christ's sacrifice and God's grace, rather than being just a commercial holiday. (32:10) The speaker calls for a return to the spiritual roots of Thanksgiving, emphasizing the need for national repentance and healing. (32:57) Christians are called to humble themselves, pray, and turn from their wicked ways to receive God's forgiveness and healing, as referenced in 2 Chronicles 7:14. (42:58) The speaker encourages listeners to seek a relationship with Jesus, emphasizing the necessity of repentance and faith for salvation. (35:02) The podcast concludes with a prayer of gratitude and a call to remember the true meaning of Thanksgiving, urging listeners to glorify God in their actions. The 7th Commandment, you shall not commit adultery: Special Guests Skip Cherryholmes and Christian Mclamb
About the Podcast Pastor Brian, Skip Cherryholmes and Christian Mclamb discusses the seventh commandment, 'You shall not commit adultery,' exploring its implications beyond physical acts to include lustful thoughts and spiritual unfaithfulness. The conversation addresses societal changes, the importance of parental modeling, and strategies for resisting temptation. Key Takeaways (00:17) Many people rationalize adultery as a personal affliction, believing that as long as they are okay with it, it is acceptable. (03:41) Adultery is often viewed as a physical issue, but Jesus taught that it begins in the heart, as indicated in Matthew 5:27-28. (04:58) Societal norms have changed, leading to a culture where adultery is more accepted, contrasting it with historical practices where young people married earlier. (10:05) True morality comes from God's law, not personal happiness, and sin is present regardless of individual perceptions of fun or excitement. (12:18) Adultery extends beyond physical relationships, encompassing any betrayal of the exclusive relationship believers have with God. (14:44) Lust is a heart issue rather than just a physical one, and it can lead to various sins. (16:25) Practical strategies for managing lustful thoughts include making a conscious decision to control one's gaze and walking with the Holy Spirit to redefine perceptions of beauty. (20:37) Parents must model a Christ-like relationship for their children, as children primarily learn from their parents, especially in homeschooling situations. (21:51) If parents do not exemplify fidelity and respect in their relationships, children may not understand the seriousness of adultery. (24:06) Submitting to God and drawing near to Him can help individuals overcome lust and temptation. (29:26) Men often find it easier to approach God about their failures than to confide in their spouses, which can lead to feelings of shame and conviction. (32:14) Parents have a responsibility to guide their children in understanding sin and righteousness, even if it means addressing their own past mistakes. (33:31) Living in persistent sin can lead to confusion about life's struggles, while those who walk faithfully understand the challenges but are not afraid. (36:33) Encouragement is given to be open about past sins with children and others, as humility can lead to exaltation. (39:03) The seriousness of unfaithfulness extends beyond marital relationships to one's faithfulness to God, with repentance and humility being crucial. (46:40) The speaker invites listeners who may not have a relationship with Jesus to consider repentance and faith, explaining the necessity of recognizing sin and the hope offered through Jesus' sacrifice. The 8th commandment you shall not steal: Guests Skip Cherryholmes and Christian Mclamb
About the Podcast Pastor Brian, along with guests Christian Mclamb and Skip Cherryholmes, discuss the eighth commandment, 'You shall not steal,' from Exodus 20:15. The conversation delves into the heart issues behind stealing, emphasizing contentment, faith in God's provision, and the importance of humility and integrity. Key Takeaways The root issue of stealing lies in the heart, with the desire to steal arising from discontentment. Even petty theft is still theft, regardless of the amount. The act of taking something that doesn't belong to you is inherently wrong. The desire to steal is linked to coveting, which is a heart issue that leads to sinful actions. Internal desires can lead to conflict and sin, with the desire to steal often stemming from wanting something unattainable. The desire to steal is rooted in discontentment with one's current situation. Stealing is seen as a way of robbing oneself of God's blessings. Stealing reflects a lack of faith in God's provision, denying His ability to bless and provide for individuals. True contentment comes from acknowledging God's desire to bless us, as stated in Psalm 37:4. Aligning one's heart with God's desires rather than acting out of selfishness is crucial. Fear can lead to sin, but turning to Christ is the right response. No justification for stealing is valid. Overcoming the temptation to steal requires dying to self and focusing on God. Personal reflections on resisting temptation, particularly in financial situations, highlight the importance of integrity and commitment to God. Aligning personal desires with God's will through prayer can help diminish the temptation to steal. Putting others before oneself can help combat the impulse to steal, as suggested by Ephesians 4:28. Borrowing becomes stealing when it is one-sided or exploitative. Prayer and humility are essential in navigating these situations. Mutual respect in relationships is crucial, with both parties seeking opportunities to give back and support one another. Expressing love and concern, whether admitting to taking advantage of someone or feeling taken advantage of, can lead to healthier interactions. Borrowing should involve giving something of value in return, not just taking without reciprocation. Recognizing the dynamics of borrowing and stealing often requires spiritual insight, which can be gained through Christ. God desires us to engage with one another in a loving and humble manner, achievable by relying on Christ. Listeners are encouraged to reflect on their motives when borrowing or taking from others, questioning whether it stems from self-gain or a lack of faith in God. A personal testimony highlights the effectiveness of faith and prayer in overcoming the temptation to steal, emphasizing that true provision comes from God. Listeners are encouraged to ask God for what they need rather than taking from others, reinforcing the idea that God is a provider. The conversation concludes with a prayer, thanking God for His blessings and asking for strength to resist temptation and trust in His provision. The speaker invites those who do not have a relationship with Jesus to consider repenting of their sins and trusting in Him for salvation. A personal example of repentance is shared, encouraging listeners to put their own words to their prayers and reach out for support if they feel led to commit to a relationship with Christ. The 9th Commandment, do not bear false witness: Guests Skip Cherryholmes and Christian Mclamb
About the Podcast Pastor Brian, along with guests Christian McLamb and Skip Cherryholmes, discusses the ninth commandment, focusing on the importance of honesty and the consequences of deceit. They explore various aspects of lying, including 'white lies,' the impact on personal integrity, and practical steps to overcome deceitful behavior. Key Takeaways Deceit for personal gain is unacceptable, and the ninth commandment emphasizes the importance of not bearing false witness. Discretion involves wise self-restraint in speech, while lying is an intentional falsehood meant to deceive. The consequences of lying include loss of trust and reputation. Lying in court undermines the judicial process and places the liar in a position of judgment that is not theirs to hold. Even minor lies, or 'little white lies,' can lead to significant trust issues, similar to how poison in water taints the whole. Justifying any form of deceit can lead to moral and spiritual decline, and rationalizing lies can lead to a disconnect with one's conscience and character. A biblical reference from Revelation 21:8 states that liars will face eternal punishment, highlighting the need to strive for improvement despite the unattainability of perfection. Ephesians 4:17-32 encourages rejecting old ways and embracing a new self through the Holy Spirit, emphasizing honesty and the abandonment of deceitful desires. Practical steps for overcoming lying include addressing root causes like self-preservation and fear of retaliation, and maintaining honesty in relationships, especially in marriage. Approaching conversations as if speaking directly to Christ can lead to greater honesty, despite potential backlash from others. Relying on the Holy Spirit helps overcome retaliation from Satan, strengthening one's character and reputation as a truth-teller. Internalizing God's word and surrounding oneself with supportive, faith-driven individuals are crucial for accountability and encouragement in truth-telling. Christians are called to be truthful but should also avoid situations that may lead to temptation, living wisely to reduce moral dilemmas. Developing a character of integrity, led by the Holy Spirit, reduces the likelihood of being drawn into deception by others. Despite the challenges of resisting temptation, ultimate victory lies in eternal life with Christ, and listeners are encouraged to push past fear and deception. The session concludes with a prayer for guidance and strength to resist lying, and an invitation for listeners to consider their relationship with Jesus and seek salvation. How the Holy Spirit speaks to an unbelieving world
About the Podcast Pastor Brian and Savannah discuss the role of the Holy Spirit in convicting the world of sin and revealing God's approval, based on John 16:7-11. They explore how the Holy Spirit guides both believers and unbelievers towards moral understanding and the necessity of a Savior. Key Takeaways (01:07) The Holy Spirit's primary function is to convict the world of sin, particularly the sin of not believing in Jesus Christ, which leads to awareness of other sins. (03:43) The Holy Spirit helps individuals recognize their good deeds, such as acts of kindness, which align with God's will. (07:02) Even those who do not believe in God possess a moral compass, which is a reflection of God's influence in their lives. (09:05) The Holy Spirit is essential for drawing individuals to God, as they cannot come to Him on their own. (09:24) Jesus' departure led to the necessity of the Holy Spirit's presence to guide believers in understanding God's approval. (12:40) The Holy Spirit acts as a restrainer of evil, holding back chaos until the appointed time, while Satan deceives unbelievers to reject the truth of God. (15:24) The Holy Spirit will convict the world of judgment, emphasizing that sin will be judged, highlighting the importance of understanding God's wrath alongside His love. (20:21) The Holy Spirit's role is to awaken a sense of guilt in the lost, leading them to recognize their need for a savior, as illustrated by the story of David and Nathan. (24:56) The Holy Spirit continuously seeks to show individuals their need for repentance, as God's desire is for all to come to Him, even if not everyone will accept that call. (29:04) The speaker emphasizes the importance of conviction in guiding personal growth and obedience to God, which leads to a profound sense of peace. (30:46) A personal testimony illustrates the power of conviction, where the speaker felt compelled to share his testimony at a men's breakfast, realizing the importance of obedience to God's calling over personal concerns. (34:10) The speaker identifies three key attributes of the Holy Spirit: conviction, peace, and joy, explaining that these attributes follow one another in a sequence that begins with conviction. (38:34) The speaker invites listeners who may be struggling and seeking a relationship with Jesus to consider repentance and faith in Him, explaining the necessity of acknowledging sin and the promise of salvation through Christ. (40:40) The speaker provides an example of a personal prayer of repentance, encouraging listeners to express their own words to God if they feel led to turn to Christ for salvation. Recognizing God's Voice and the Holy Spirits guidance
About the Podcast Pastor Brian discusses how to recognize God's voice and understand His guidance, emphasizing the importance of a relationship with Jesus, prayer, scripture, and the Holy Spirit. Key Takeaways (03:04) Recognizing God's voice requires a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, which helps maintain focus on God amidst distractions. (04:04) God often communicates by bringing memories and scripture to mind, making it essential to know God's word to understand His messages. (05:43) Recognizing God's voice is similar to knowing a parent's voice; a close relationship allows for easier recognition of communication. (06:20) Studying scripture is crucial for understanding God's expectations and recognizing His guidance. (06:48) Prayer is a vital method for seeking guidance, and listeners are encouraged to pray for wisdom, especially when faced with decisions. (08:00) James 3:13-18 helps discern godly wisdom from confusion and self-seeking motives, emphasizing the characteristics of wisdom that comes from God. (09:56) God can choose to speak audibly, but He often communicates through scripture, prayer, and the Holy Spirit's leading. (09:33) Assess whether thoughts are gentle, fruitful, and free from hypocrisy or favoritism to ensure actions honor God. (11:20) God's guidance promotes humility and selflessness, while Satan's temptation encourages selfishness and pride. (11:56) Following the Holy Spirit's leading is essential, as thoughts that encourage actions glorifying God may indicate the Holy Spirit's influence. (12:50) In challenging circumstances, trusting God and having faith can be seen as divine guidance, but one must also take action where possible. (16:36) Conversations with others can provide clarity and confirmation of God's direction, highlighting the importance of community and fellowship in faith. (17:50) Engaging with fellow believers can help in making difficult decisions, as they can offer support and insight that may align with God's will. (18:25) God often uses others to convey messages, and it is important to be attentive to God's voice rather than relying solely on personal judgment. (20:00) Obeying the inner voice of conscience, which can manifest as either a gentle nudge or a strong conviction, is significant. (23:02) If guidance does not glorify God or align with scripture, it may be misleading and potentially from Satan. (28:03) Listeners are encouraged to seek advice from Christian friends, pastors, or family members who have a strong relationship with Christ when uncertain about spiritual matters. (32:14) The speaker invites listeners who do not have a relationship with Jesus to consider coming to Him, explaining the necessity of repentance and faith in Christ for salvation. Why do bad things happen to good people?
About the Podcast Pastor Brian and Savannah discuss why bad things happen to good people, using their recent experience with a hurricane as a backdrop. They explore theological perspectives on suffering, the role of faith in adversity, and the importance of community support during crises. Key Takeaways (03:39) The discussion begins with the hosts recounting their experience during a recent hurricane, which they were initially unaware of while celebrating their anniversary. They were redirected by GPS due to road closures caused by flooding, illustrating their lack of awareness of the hurricane's impact. (06:30) The hosts reflect on the devastation caused by the hurricane in Western North Carolina and neighboring states, highlighting the loss of life and the need for community support. (08:20) One reason suggested for why bad things happen to good people is that God may use painful situations to get people's attention, as natural disasters often prompt questions about divine purpose. (10:03) The hosts emphasize the importance of individual response to suffering, suggesting that people can either harden their hearts or seek God through their struggles, leading to different outcomes in faith. (11:40) C.S. Lewis's perspective on pain is highlighted, suggesting that while people may ignore pleasure, pain demands attention and can be a means through which God communicates with humanity. (12:54) Despite the devastation, there are stories of hope, such as a school principal expressing joy over the safety of all students. However, the community still faces the challenge of rebuilding. (13:37) The speaker emphasizes that God is present in times of pain, offering peace and strength to those affected. He is portrayed as a provider and healer, willing to help those who turn to Him. (16:25) The discussion shifts to the reasons behind suffering, suggesting that God uses pain to get people's attention and help them grow in their faith. (17:04) Biblical references are made to illustrate that trials can lead to perseverance and maturity in faith, encouraging believers to view hardships as opportunities for growth. (18:06) The speaker acknowledges that discipline is a part of the Christian experience, and while it may not be pleasant, it ultimately leads to righteousness and peace. (19:19) The conversation touches on the relationship between sin and suffering, suggesting that the fallen state of the world, introduced by sin, is a factor in the existence of natural disasters. (20:50) The speaker reflects on the complexity of suffering, noting that while some may see it as punishment, others may view it as a chance for growth or a reminder of God's sovereignty. (21:15) The speaker discusses the idea that suffering may serve different purposes, such as helping individuals grow or reminding them of God's sovereignty. They emphasize that humans cannot fully understand God's reasons. (21:50) The speaker finds hope in the belief that bad things can happen to good people, but this life is not the end for Christians, who have eternal life through Jesus. (22:15) They share a personal experience of suffering from a miscarriage, highlighting how, despite the pain, they felt God's love and support during that time. (23:21) The speaker reflects on the importance of having an eternal perspective as Christians, noting that material losses are temporary and that God provides strength and hope. (24:34) They reference 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, which speaks to the temporary nature of earthly troubles compared to eternal glory, encouraging listeners to focus on the unseen. (25:52) The speaker acknowledges that while life can be filled with troubles, these experiences are temporary and can lead to personal growth and deeper ministry. (27:20) They explain that hardships can equip believers to help others, as those who have faced similar struggles can offer support and share their faith. (28:09) The speaker cites Romans 8:28, emphasizing that all things work together for good for those who love God, reinforcing the idea that struggles can lead to spiritual growth and strengthen relationships. (30:40) They reiterate that even painful experiences, like their miscarriage, can ultimately work together for good, fostering closer relationships with God and others. (31:09) The speaker concludes by reminding listeners that the worst suffering was endured by Jesus Christ, who faced the ultimate injustice despite being perfect, underscoring the theme of suffering in the Christian faith. (33:30) The speaker challenges the notion of 'good people,' suggesting that no one is truly good, which reframes the question of why bad things happen to good people. (35:35) The speaker cites Matt Slick, explaining that God allows bad things to happen as part of His sovereign plan, which ultimately leads to good for those who love Him. (36:49) The speaker encourages listeners to reflect on their struggles through scripture and to draw strength from God, emphasizing that while the reasons for suffering may not always be clear, God is omniscient and knows what is best. (38:11) The speaker expresses hope that the discussion has provided clarity on the question of suffering and encourages listeners to remember that God uses challenges for growth and to refocus on Him. (39:01) The speaker invites listeners to share their questions and experiences, offering to provide scriptural insights in future episodes. (40:19) A prayer is offered, thanking God for guidance and asking for help for those affected by recent hardships, such as a hurricane. (41:45) The speaker transitions to a call for listeners who may not have a relationship with Jesus, explaining the necessity of repentance and faith in Christ for salvation. The Olympics opening ceremony, Setting at the table with Jesus.
About the Podcast The hosts discuss the recent Olympics opening ceremony, reflecting on its perceived blasphemous elements and contrasting it with the Christian message of repentance and transformation. They emphasize the importance of addressing sin and the need for genuine repentance in the Christian faith. Key Takeaways (00:04:10) The hosts critique the Olympics opening ceremony, suggesting it mocked the Last Supper and expressing outrage at the perceived blasphemy. They acknowledge that while lost people will act lost, Christians should stand for truth. (00:06:41) True apologies require acknowledgment of wrongdoing, and many Olympic athletes gave glory to God, contrasting the ceremony's mockery. The hosts suggest that sponsors withdrawing from the Olympics were motivated by financial concerns rather than genuine remorse. (09:25) The hosts discuss the importance of addressing issues within the Christian community, particularly when it comes to pastors who may not align with biblical teachings. They emphasize that any accusations should be made in a loving, Christ-like manner. (09:50) Opposing unbiblical actions can be done without provoking anger, advocating for a righteous anger instead. The speaker mentions their personal choice to stop watching the Olympics due to perceived blasphemy, suggesting that rejecting such events is a valid form of protest. (11:14) The idea that Jesus only wants to talk about love and not sin is unbiblical. Jesus did engage with sinners but also addressed their sins, calling them to repentance and transformation. (17:43) Jesus' purpose was to call sinners to repentance, not to condone their sins. Genuine repentance is essential, and Jesus' call to follow him requires a change in behavior. (19:29) Jesus criticized the Pharisees for their hypocrisy and legalism, pointing out that outward appearances do not reflect inner righteousness. He condemned them for neglecting justice and love for God while meticulously following certain laws. (21:19) Understanding one's sin is essential before grasping God's love and mercy. The speaker stresses that repentance involves recognizing and turning away from sin. (25:01) The law reveals God's righteousness but does not save. It serves to lead individuals to Christ, the true savior, and discussing sin with sinners is crucial before introducing the concept of God's love. (28:25) Loving others enough to confront them about their sins is important, as failing to do so reflects one's own spiritual state. The speaker emphasizes the eternal consequences of sin and the desire to prevent others from facing eternal torment. (30:00) Jesus interacted with sinners but ultimately transformed them, leading them away from their sinful ways. Understanding the Bible correctly is crucial to avoid falling into misleading doctrines. (33:09) The speaker concludes with a prayer, asking for guidance and strength to spread the gospel and address sin lovingly. They invite listeners to engage with them, share their stories, and suggest topics for discussion. (36:06) Listeners are invited to enter a relationship with Jesus, emphasizing the necessity of repentance and faith in Christ for salvation. The speaker provides an example of a prayer for repentance and encourages listeners to express their own words to God. Overcoming the fear of man, finding the courage to witness
About the Podcast Pastor Brian and co-host Savannah discuss overcoming the fear of man in evangelism, emphasizing the importance of spreading the gospel despite challenges. They share personal experiences and biblical insights to encourage listeners to witness faithfully. Key Takeaways (03:39) Pastor Brian and Savannah discuss the common fears and lies that hinder Christians from evangelizing, such as feeling inadequate in Bible knowledge, fear of looking foolish, and worrying about offending others. They emphasize that these doubts are tools of the devil to prevent believers from sharing the gospel. (08:02) Evangelism is a collective responsibility for all believers, not just a select few. The hosts encourage listeners to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance and assurance in sharing their faith, even in the face of perceived inadequacies or failures. (10:02) Feeling intimidated and thinking others may not be approachable are common reasons people avoid witnessing. The hosts stress that actions alone are not enough; words are necessary to convey the message of salvation effectively. (12:18) Overcoming intimidation in witnessing can be achieved by focusing on faithfulness rather than immediate results. Starting with small steps like using tracks to initiate conversations can be helpful, but the ultimate goal should be to share the full message of the gospel. (13:37) Emphasizing the fear of God over the fear of man can provide the courage needed to witness effectively. Understanding the consequences of not sharing the message of salvation can motivate individuals to step out of their comfort zones. (15:44) Having a genuine concern for the salvation of others is crucial in evangelism. This love for the lost should drive believers to share the truth about sin, repentance, and the need for salvation through Jesus Christ. (18:05) Recognizing the severity of sin and the need for repentance is fundamental in leading others to Christ. It's crucial to approach conversations about sin with love and compassion, guiding others to reflect on their actions and their need for redemption. (19:05) Witnessing to others requires courage and faith in God, as it can be a challenging and ongoing process. Going out in groups can provide support and encouragement, making the task of witnessing less daunting and more effective. (19:55) Starting conversations can be challenging, but a simple 'Jesus loves you' can be effective. Engaging with store clerks naturally and transitioning from casual topics to spiritual ones can lead to deeper discussions. (24:29) Encouraging others to share the gospel, even when faced with rejection, is crucial. Quoting scripture and practicing with friends and family can boost confidence in evangelism. (26:00) Viewing the lost as loved ones and feeling a genuine sorrow for their spiritual state can motivate evangelism efforts. Engaging with waitstaff at restaurants and sharing the message of Jesus, even briefly, is impactful. (29:01) Reflecting on biblical examples of long-term witnessing can provide encouragement and perspective. Regular self-examination and a commitment to the faith are essential in continuing evangelistic efforts. (31:23) Success in witnessing is faithfully sharing in the power of the Holy Spirit, leaving the outcome to God. The focus should be on Jesus and sharing the free gift of salvation, not on personal achievements. (33:18) A prayer thanking God for the ability to witness faithfully, asking for strength, courage, and boldness to share the message of salvation with others. Seeking guidance to overcome discouragement and intimidation. (36:05) Invitation to establish a relationship with Jesus by acknowledging sinfulness, repenting, and placing trust in Christ for salvation. Emphasis on faith in Christ alone for forgiveness and eternal life.
