    S17E7 - The Markets Marketing

Send us Fan MailStore misleading marketing involves deceptive practices like false claims, hidden fees, and "bait-and-switch" tactics that trick consumers into purchasing, often violating laws against unfair competition. Common examples include fake "always on sale" pricing, inflated "going out of business" sales, and misleading imagery. TacticsBait and Switch: Advertising a product at a low price without intent to sell it, intending to switch customers to a more expensive itemSales and Pricing: Items permanently marked "on sale" or "50% off" when they are never sold at the original "regular" price.Hidden Fees and Fine Print: Important, restrictive information placed in tiny text, or fees added at the last moment.False "Free" Offers: Items labeled "free" that actually require mandatory paid purchases or hidden costs.Misleading Imagery: Using photos that make products appear larger, better quality, or different than they actually are."Going Out of Business" Sales: Falsely claiming a store is liquidating to drive traffic, despite not actually closing. This week we would like to highlight Magic City Harvest if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below. https://www.magiccityharvest.org/Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S17E5 - Be A Man: Open Up

Send us Fan MailRecent data indicates a critical, often silent, crisis in men’s mental health, with nearly 1 in 5 men experiencing mental health conditions annually. New 2026 insights highlight that while 20% of men face issues like depression, they are less likely to seek care, often presenting with unique symptoms like irritability or high-risk behavior rather than typical sadness. Key 2025-2026 Trends and Statistics:High-Risk Demographic: In the U.S., men die by suicide almost four times more often than women, with high rates among younger adults and men over 50.Treatment Gap: Only 40% of men with reported mental illness received care in the past year, compared to 52% of women.Workplace Strain: Nearly 191,000 men report stress, depression, or anxiety caused or made worse by work.Substance Misuse: Men are 1.5 to 2.3 times more likely to develop substance use disorders, often as a coping mechanism.Emerging Trends: A 39% increase in searches for "male depression symptoms" suggests growing, yet often silent, concern in 2025. Unique Mental Health Expression in Men:"Masked" Depression: Depression in men may appear as anger, irritability, risky behavior, or physical symptoms like headaches, rather than traditional sadness.Social Isolation: A new study found half of men feel they lack sufficient support, with high rates of loneliness.Stigma and Masculinity: Societal expectations still act as a barrier to seeking help, causing many to handle issues alone. Actionable Insights for Support:Prioritize Social Connection: Building strong bonds with friends and family is a primary preventative measure.Telehealth Preference: Evidence suggests that many men prefer virtual sessions for privacy and convenience.Redefining Strength: Shifting the narrative to view vulnerability as a strength is crucial to increasing care. This week we would like to highlight 988 Crisis Line if you would like to learn more or donate click the link on episodePlease leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S17E4 - Happenstance

Send us Fan MailUnexpected events are viewed as opportunities for growth rather than disruptive setbacks. By cultivating curiosity, persistence, and flexibility, individuals can turn chance occurrences into meaningful life improvements, fostering resilience and reducing stress from rigid planning. Reframing Setbacks: Instead of viewing unexpected career or life changes as failures, this perspective sees them as potential paths to more meaningful opportunities."Sacred Happenstance": embracing unexpected events—even small ones—as having deeper significance can improve mental well-being by decreasing the need for total control and reducing anxiety.Action-Oriented Mindset: Developed by John Krumboltz, this theory encourages active exploration, suggesting that people can generate their own "luck" by engaging in new activities and remaining open to serendipity.Reducing Learned Helplessness: Shifting from a strict, premeditated life path to a "planned happenstance" model can counter the feeling that mental states are permanent, fostering a sense of agency.Overcoming Rigid Goals: It challenges the notion that one must follow a strict, linear path to success, which can reduce the pressure and anxiety associated with perfectionism.Cultivating Planned HappenstanceCuriosity: Explore new learning opportunities.Persistence: Continue acting despite setbacks.Flexibility: Change attitudes to deal with unexpected situations.Optimism: View new opportunities as possible.Risk-Taking: Take action in the face of uncertain outcomes. This week we would like to highlight Future Learn if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.futurelearn.com/info/courses/career-planning-and-your-degree/0/steps/229934Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S16E10 - Speaking In Absolutes

Send us Fan MailAbsolutes in mental health, or "all-or-nothing" thinking, are cognitive distortions using rigid terms like "always," "never," "everyone," or "totally" to view life in extremes. This black-and-white mentality is strongly linked to depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and personality disorders, as it ignores nuance, increases emotional distress, and fosters unrealistic expectations. Key Aspects of Absolutes in Mental HealthDefinition & Examples: Absolutist thinking classifies experiences as strictly good/bad or success/failure. Common phrases include "I always fail," "No one likes me," or "I'm completely useless".Mental Health Implications: Research shows high frequencies of these terms in forums for depression and anxiety. It acts as a predictor for depressive relapse and is common in OCD and borderline personality disorder (BPD).Impact on Well-being: This thinking style reduces resilience, hinders problem-solving, lowers self-esteem, and increases feelings of hopelessness.Cognitive Distortions: It is a core component of "cognitive misers"—the tendency to simplify complex situations to save mental energy, often leading to inaccurate judgments.Overcoming the Trap: Identifying these words and challenging them with "gray area" thinking helps break the cycle. Identifying Absolutist Language Words: Always, never, completely, absolutely, nothing, everyone, total.Patterns: Viewing oneself or others as either completely perfect or a total failure. By shifting away from black-and-white, individuals can improve their emotion regulation and self-compassion.Problems with Speaking in AbsolutesUndermines Credibility: Because these statements are easily disproven by a single exception, they can make the speaker seem unreasonable or uninformed.Creates Conflict: Using "always" or "never" in relationships often leads to defensiveness.Limits Perspective: It promotes a rigid mindset, reducing the ability to see gray areas. This week we would like to highlight Recovery Can if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://recovery.com/Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S16E9 - Adult Temper

Send us Fan MailTemperament—innate, genetically influenced behavioral styles such as reactivity, sociability, and emotionality—serves as the foundation for personality and significantly influences mental health. Specific temperamental traits, such as high harm avoidance (anxiety), high negative emotionality, or unstable affective temperaments (e.g., cyclothymic), are strong predictors for anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric disorders. Affective Temperaments and Disorders: Unstable affective temperaments (cyclothymic, dysphoric, and volatile) correlate strongly with psychiatric symptoms. For instance, a melancholic temperament is associated with depression, while hyperthymic (high energy/positive) temperament may offer some protection against mental disorders, although it can be linked to bipolar disorder.Anxiety and Fearfulness: Anxious temperament, often linked to high harm avoidance, involves shyness, social discomfort, and fear of uncertainty, which are high-risk factors for developing anxiety disorders.Overcontrolled/Undercontrolled Types:Overcontrolled (OC): Characterized by extreme self-control, perfectionism, and inhibited emotions, often linked to depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.Undercontrolled: Characterized by low emotional regulation, impulsivity, and high activity, often linked to externalizing behaviors, such as ADHD or conduct issues.Risk vs. Protective Factors: High negative emotionality increases risks, while high "effortful control" (the ability to regulate attention and behavior) acts as a protective factor against both internalizing and externalizing mental health issues. The Role of TemperamentTemperament affects how individuals experience, interpret, and react to their environment, which in turn influences the development of coping mechanisms and personality. While temperament is mostly innate, it is not destiny; however, it shapes the likelihood of developing mental health conditions across the lifespan. This week we would like to highlight Help Guide Can if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.helpguide.org/mental-health/psychology/personality-types-traits-and-how-it-affects-mental-healthPlease leave a commentSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S16E8 - Are you the reflection of your parents?

Send us Fan MailChildren often act as direct mirrors of their parents, inheriting behaviors, attitudes, and emotional patterns. This reflection manifests through shared personality traits, similar ways of managing stress, and, at times, the unconscious repetition of parental strengths and flaws. While upbringing sets a foundational model, individuals can consciously choose which aspects to mirror. Key Aspects of Parental ReflectionBehavioral Mirroring: Children frequently adopt the mannerisms, habits, and communication styles of their parents, which can include both positive nurturing behaviors and negative, stressed responses.Unconscious Patterns: Individuals often unconsciously replicate their parents' life, attitudes, and relationship styles, sometimes leading to the repetition of similar, even dysfunctional, life scenarios.Values and Personality: Core aspects of one's personality, such as being organized, emotionally open, or conflict-avoidant, can be traced back to what was observed during childhood.Physical and Mannerism Similarities: Beyond genetics, children mirror facial expressions, gestures, and specific mannerisms that are adopted over years of observation. Processing the ReflectionAcceptance and Differentiation: As people age, they may recognize that their parents are flawed individuals. S16E5 - The Buzzards Be Circling

Send us Fan MailThe phrase "the buzzards are circling" symbolizes that trouble, downfall, or severe challenges are imminent, often implying that enemies or negative circumstances are waiting for a person's demise. This metaphor signifies a period where one feels vulnerable, watched, or under attack by overwhelming problems. Key interpretations of this idiom include: Impending Danger: It indicates that a situation is critical, and a "final blow" to one's happiness, career, or health might be close.Opportunistic Threats: Similar to how vultures wait for a weakened animal, this represents people or problems feeding on one's misfortunes, weaknesses, or failures.Environmental/Spiritual Stress: It can represent intense, unrelenting pressures that seem to "haunt" a person, encouraging a need for resilience or, in some contexts, spiritual, or emotional, defense.Cycles of Life: On a more neutral note, it can represent the natural, albeit harsh, process of change, loss, and eventual renewal.Strategies often associated with this metaphor, particularly in challenging times, include remaining vigilant, staying strong, and, as suggested by some, "not dying"This week we would like to highlight Insights Therapy if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.insightstherapy.com/counseling-services/eating-disorders/binge-eatingPlease leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S16E4 - S*** To Sunshine

Send us Fan Mail"Turning something bad into sunshine" means actively transforming a negative situation, feeling, or experience into something positive, hopeful, and constructive. This can be achieved through a shift in mindset, intentional actions, and focusing on personal growth or helping others.Strategies for Personal TransformationPractice positive self-talk: Challenge negative thoughts and replace them with empowering perspectives. Instead of dwelling on a failure, view it as a learning opportunity.Focus on gratitude: Keeping a gratitude journal or simply noting a few things you are thankful for each day can help shift your focus from what is lacking to what is abundant in your life.Reframe the situation: Try to look for the "silver lining" or a different perspective. What initially seems bad might lead to unexpected growth or new opportunities, much like turning a problem into a creative solution.Engage in self-care: Allow yourself time to rest, listen to music, exercise, or indulge in a hobby you enjoy. Physical activity and mental relaxation can help clear "mental cobwebs" and provide clarity.Seek new environments or experiences: Taking a break from your daily routine, even a small one, can help refresh your outlook. Try a new restaurant, redecorate a room, or visit an antique shop.Spreading Positivity to OthersPerform random acts of kindness: Simple gestures, like complimenting someone, holding a door open, or buying a coffee for the person behind you in line, can significantly brighten someone's day and your own.Be there for someone: Sometimes, just being present, asking someone if they need help, or lending an empathetic ear can make a significant difference to someone who is struggling.Be polite and friendly: Simple manners and a genuine smile can go a long way in creating a positive environment around you.Bless others: Pouring into others through service, such as babysitting for a friend, helping a neighbor move, or just sending an encouraging text, brings joy and peace even during difficult times. This week we would like to highlight Sunshine Foundatio  if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://sunshinefoundation.org/Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. Send us Fan MailLife in the game of Survivor is an intense, stripped-down version of reality, focusing on survival, strategy, and social dynamics, mirroring real life by testing your core self, forcing adaptability, building trust (and suspicion), and emphasizing planning, work ethic, and mental toughness under extreme pressure like starvation and isolation, leading to deep psychological effects and lasting lessons about human nature and ethics. The Core ExperiencePhysical & Mental Hardship: Contestants face starvation, dehydration, and isolation, which strips away artifice and reveals true character, forcing resilience and a strong work ethic.Intense Social Game: Alliances are crucial, requiring strategic social maneuvering, trust-building, and navigating betrayal, much like navigating professional and personal relationships.Key Life Lessons & ThemesAdaptability: Players must constantly adjust to new challenges and shifting social landscapes.Strategic Planning: Thinking several steps ahead, like backward induction, is vital for success.Authenticity: Who you are in real life often dictates how you play; the game reveals your true self.Trust & Betrayal: Building alliances is key, but the constant threat of being blindsided creates intense anxiety and tests relationships.Resilience: Pushing through hardship, exemplified by the phrase "Keep Digging," is essential.Ethical Dilemmas: The show explores murky ethical waters, questioning whether "it's just a game" justifies morally ambiguous actions like lying. This week we would like to highlight FSA if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://survivingabuse.org/#:~:text=The%20mission%20of%20The%20Foundation,scars%20are%20lasting%20and%20profound.Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S16E2 - Therapy From AI

Send us Fan MailAI therapy studies show promise for mild/moderate anxiety and depression, with chatbots like Therabot reducing symptoms in trials, offering accessible, stigma-free support, and aiding human therapists with documentation; however, concerns remain about long-term efficacy, potential biases, lack of human insight (like body language), and safety, suggesting AI currently excels as a support tool, not a full replacement for human care, often benefiting from hybrid models. How AI Therapy WorksChatbots: AI-powered apps (like Woebot, Wysa) use large language models (LLMs) for conversations, providing CBT, mindfulness, and other techniques.Virtual Reality (VR): AI avatars in VR environments simulate therapy sessions, shown to be effective for addiction treatment.Clinician Support: AI assists therapists with intake, notes, tracking, and homework, streamlining practice. Limitations & ChallengesLong-Term Efficacy: Initial benefits may fade; AI struggles with the complex, evolving nature of long-term mental health needs.Depth of Understanding: Lacks human insight, emotional nuance, and ability to read body language, leading to potentially superficial support.Safety & Bias: Research highlights risks of dangerous responses and embedded biases, requiring careful development. Not a Replacement: AI is a tool to support, not fully replace, human therapists, especially for severe conditions. This week we would like to highlight APA if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.apaservices.org/practice/business/technology/artificial-intelligence-chatbots-therapistsPlease leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S15E10 - More Money More Memories?

Send us Fan MailMemories vs. money is a classic trade-off: money provides security and enables experiences, while memories offer lasting internal joy, peace, and meaning, often becoming more valuable as we age, though the best approach balances spending on memory-making with financial prudence, recognizing that experiences, not possessions, often define a rich life and legacy. While money buys comfort and supports lifestyle, it's the shared laughter, acts of kindness, and deep connections that truly matter and are remembered, not just wealth. The Case for Memories (Experiences)Lasting Value: Memories provide internal warmth, peace, and joy that money can't buy and that last a lifetime, even into old age.Connection & Meaning: They foster deeper connections with loved ones and create a sense of purpose, which is often more fulfilling than material wealth.Irreplaceable Moments: Time spent creating memories (like a child's first trip) is a finite resource; you can't get those moments back, unlike money, which can be earned again.Legacy: People remember how you made them feel, not how much you owned, making shared experiences the true legacy. The Role of MoneyEnabler: Money is essential for survival and security, and it facilitates the creation of many cherished memories, such as family vacations or experiences.Balance is Key: Financial experts suggest balancing spending on experiences (like travel) with saving for the future to avoid regret.Supports Lifestyle: Money allows for a better quality of life, providing comfort and options that enhance your ability to enjoy time with others. Finding the BalanceInvest in Experiences: Think of spending on experiences as investing in "memory dividends" for your future self, as suggested by this YouTube video.Value Time: Prioritize time with loved ones over passive activities or excessive work, as time is more valuable and fleeting than money, according to this article.Create Memories Affordably: Not all memories require big spending; simple acts of kindness, local outings, and quality time can be just as impactful as expensive trips, notes this article. This week we would like to highlight Salvation Army if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/Support the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S15E7 - Kids on Social Media

Send us Fan MailSocial media has significant negative effects on youth, including increased rates of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, often due to cyberbullying, exposure to unrealistic body images, and comparison to curated online lives. It can also lead to poor sleep habits, addiction, and a decline in physical activity due to overuse, which often involves spending more than three hours a day on these platforms. Conversely, social media can offer some benefits like enhanced communication, information sharing, and networking opportunities. Negative effectsMental health: Social media use is linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness.Body image and self-esteem: Exposure to edited, "picture-perfect" images can lead to negative body image, body dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem.Cyberbullying: Platforms can be a venue for online harassment, which is linked to mental health problems, including suicidal thoughts.Addiction and behavior: The dopamine-releasing nature of social media can lead to compulsive use and addiction, and the developing adolescent brain is particularly sensitive to social rewards.Sleep disruption: Spending excessive time on social media, especially late at night, disrupts sleep patterns.Unrealistic expectations: It can create a distorted perception of reality and foster unrealistic views of other people's lives.Positive effectsCommunication and connection: It can help youth connect with others, build communities, and stay in touch.Information and education: Social media can be a tool for information sharing and provide educational opportunities.Networking: It can offer networking opportunities for young people.Awareness: It can help individuals become more aware of certain topics and social issues. This week we would like to highlight Kid'  Mental Health Foundation if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.kidsmentalhealthfoundation.org/mental-health-resources/technology-and-social-media/social-media-and-kidsPlease leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You AllSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S15E6 - Misconduct Becoming Permissable

Send us Fan MailThe "broken windows" theory suggests that minor signs of disorder, like a broken window, can lead to more serious crime, and its application to law enforcement has been linked to police misconduct. This happens because aggressively policing minor offenses, such as fare-dodging or jaywalking, can lead to stops and arrests of innocent people, potentially causing more harm than the original offenses. The aggressive approach can lead to complaints about police misconduct and has been criticized for targeting marginalized communities disproportionately. Alternative perspectives and solutionsFocus on environment: Some argue that the original theory's focus on the physical environment is sound, but the prescription was faulty.Community-led solutions: Instead of aggressive policing, some suggest investing in community-led solutions and neighborhood improvement programs, such as rehabilitating vacant lots and abandoned buildings.Organizational accountability: For organizations, preventing misconduct involves clear policies, strong leadership, and a culture of ethics and compliance, rather than a "broken windows" disciplinary strategy.Critique of the theory: Critics point to studies that have found no link between minor disorder and serious crime, suggesting the theory is flawed and its application has led to negative consequences for communities. Other applicationsWorkplace misconduct: The theory is sometimes discussed in the context of corporate misconduct, though its application to white-collar crime is debated.Sexual assault enforcement: The "broken windows" theory has also been proposed as a way to address the enforcement gap in sexual assault cases by consistently enforcing laws against low-level street harassment that meets the elements of assault. This week we would like to highlight Mary's Mission if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://facebook.com/events/s/marys-mission-2025/682535297781985/Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S15E4 - A Fright To Remember

Send us Fan MailHalloween started with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead blurred on the night of October 31st, allowing spirits to roam the earth. They lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off evil spirits. Over time, this evolved with the influence of Christianity, which designated November 1st as All Saints' Day (or All-hallows), and the night before became known as All-Hallows' Eve. The tradition was brought to America by immigrants, where it blended with other customs to develop into the modern holiday celebrated today with activities like trick-or-treating.Ancient originsSamhain: The festival celebrated the end of the harvest and the start of winter, a time of year associated with death.Spirit world: The Celts believed spirits would walk the earth on this night, and they lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off evil spirits.Offerings: They would also leave food outside their homes to appease benign spirits.Christian influenceAll Saints' Day: In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as a day to honor all saints.All-Hallows' Eve: This day was also known as "All-hallows," and the night before it began to be called "All-Hallows' Eve," which eventually became Halloween. Blending traditions: All Saints' Day incorporated some of Samhain's traditions, like bonfires and dressing in costumes.Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) began over 3,000 years ago with ancient Mesoamerican cultures, like the Aztecs, who saw death as a continuation of life. These indigenous rituals honored the dead and involved ceremonies to honor the goddess of death, Mictēcacihuātl. After the Spanish conquest, these traditions blended with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, evolving into the modern celebration that takes place on November 1st and 2ndThis week we would like to highlight Nursa if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below  https://nursa.com/blog/halloween-and-mental-health-best-self-care-ideas-in-2022Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For LiSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S15E3 - Hobbies, Life, and Personal Info

Send us Fan MailEngaging in hobbies is strongly associated with better health, happiness, and life satisfaction, particularly for older adults. The benefits included fewer depressive symptoms and higher self-reported health, and the effects were universal across different countries. While correlation does not prove causation, the findings suggest hobbies provide creative, emotional, and cognitive benefits that are linked to improved well-being. Key findingsImproved mental health: Individuals with hobbies reported fewer depressive symptoms and higher life satisfaction. Better overall health: Participants with hobbies reported better self-perceived health.Universally beneficial: The positive associations between hobbies and well-being were found across different countries and cultures. Bidirectional relationship: The study noted a feedback loop, where hobbies contribute to well-being, and good health allows for more hobby engagement. Important considerationsThe study was observational, meaning it shows a link between hobbies and better health, but does not prove that hobbies are the direct cause. The benefits are linked to the psychological and emotional aspects of hobbies, such as creativity, self-expression, and relaxation. Recent research also suggests that gentler hobbies, such as gardening and social clubs, may be particularly beneficial for well-being. A separate study found that having a hobby is linked to a reduction in all-cause mortality risk. This week we would like to highlight AFSP if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.facebook.com/share/1BbiBjSMeL/?mibextid=wwXIfrPlease leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S15E1 - A Behavior

Send us Fan MailBehaviorism is a school of psychology emphasizing that environmental factors shape all observable behavior, which is learned through conditioning, rather than internal mental states. It focuses on principles like classical conditioning (associating stimuli) and operant conditioning (learning from consequences through reinforcement and punishment). Key figures include John B. Watson, who advocated for psychology to be an objective science based on what could be seen, and B.F. Skinner, who developed operant conditioning.  Key AspectsFocus on the Observable: Behaviorists study actions that can be directly observed and measured, often through statistical and quantitative methods. Environmental Influence: They prioritize the role of environmental factors and learning in shaping behavior. Application in Various Fields: The behavioralist approach has been applied to understand animal and human behavior in psychology, economics, political science, and more.Rejection of Internal States (in some fields): Early behavioralists in psychology and political science sometimes rejected the study of unobservable internal phenomena like thoughts or emotions, though this restriction later led to new approaches. Economic Context: In behavioral economics, a behavioralist believes that cognitive biases and other psychological factors play a significant role in economic decisions, leading to market inefficiencies. Types of ConditioningClassical Conditioning: A process where a neutral stimulus becomes associated with a naturally occurring response, leading to the neutral stimulus eliciting the response on its own. Operant Conditioning: Learning through consequences, where behaviors followed by reinforcement (rewards) become more probable, and behaviors followed by punishment become less probable. This week we would like to highlight AFSP if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below  https://afspwalks.donordrive.com/participants/3420783Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S14E12 - A Worry Stone

Send us Fan MailWorry stones don't have a single origin but evolved from folk practices in ancient cultures, including Greece, Tibet, Ireland, and Native American tribes, who used smooth, naturally eroded stones to soothe anxiety and provide comfort through repetitive rubbing motions. While these early stones were often found in nature, the concept expanded over time to include intentionally crafted stones, sometimes made from specific gemstones, which became popular in alternative healing practices in the 1970s.  Ancient OriginsAncient Greece: The concept has roots in ancient Greece, where people used smooth, sea-worn stones for relaxation and to soothe anxiety. Tibet and Ireland: Variations of worry stones were also used in Tibet and Ireland. In Ireland, for example, stones like green Connemara marble were used for good luck. Native American Tribes: Some Native American tribes used worry stones, sometimes made of quartz, passing them down through generations as sacred objects to maintain a sense of connection. How They WorkRepetitive Motion: The core idea is the rhythmic motion of rubbing the stone with your thumb, which calms the mind. Pressure Points: This motion is believed to activate pressure points in the hand, helping to release tension and stress. Mindfulness: Worry stones can act as a grounding tool, allowing you to focus your attention and disrupt unhealthy coping mechanisms like nail-biting. Evolution of Worry StonesNatural vs. Crafted: Initially, people used any smooth, naturally eroded stone. Over time, more intentionally crafted stones were made from various materials, including gemstones. Modern Use: Worry stones became more prominent in the alternative medicine and New Age movements starting in the 1970s, seen as a natural aid for stress and a tool for focus during meditation This week we would like to highlight AFSP if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below  https://afspwalks.donordrive.com/participants/3420783Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. Define your goals:What do you want to achieve in therapy this time around? Having clear intentions can help the conversation. 3. Choose your therapist:Decide whether to contact your previous therapist or seek a new one who is a better fit for your current needs. 4. Prepare your talking points:Be ready to share your recent life events, current feelings, and what you hope to focus on in your sessions. 5. Communicate openly:Be honest with your therapist about your goals, feelings, and any unresolved issues from the past. Important MindsetsIt's not a failure: Therapy is not a one-time fix but an ongoing process. Returning is a sign of strength and self-care. Give yourself grace: Be compassionate with yourself for restarting the process. Trust your instincts: If you feel you need therapy, trust that intuition as a valid reason to seek support. This week we would like to highlight The Suicid Awareness Walk if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://facebook.com/events/s/-5th-annual-suicide-awareness-/1682013019336379/Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S14E7 - A little good again

Send us Fan MailTo cope with financial stress, create a realistic budget and financial plan to gain control over your finances, build an emergency fund for unexpected events, and prioritize paying off debt. Address the emotional impact of stress through self-care, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management techniques like meditation. For more complex situations, seek support from a financial advisor or therapist and remember to communicate openly with supportive friends and family. Practical Financial StrategiesCreate a Budget and Financial Plan:Outline your income and expenses to understand your financial situation and create a game plan to track spending and achieve goals. Build an Emergency Fund:Set aside money for unexpected expenses, which provides peace of mind and prevents further financial difficulties. Tackle Debt:Develop a strategy to pay down debt, focusing on prioritizing repayment to gain more control. Reduce Expenses:Identify areas where you can cut back on non-essential spending to free up money. Find Ways to Increase Income:Explore additional income streams or ways to boost your earnings to improve your financial situation. The vicious cycle: Financial stress leads to poor mental health (anxiety, depression), which reduces productivity and decision-making.Reduced productivity and poor decision-making can worsen financial difficulties. This, in turn, increases financial stress, creating a downward spiral. How to break the cycle:Acknowledge the problem:Recognize that financial stress is a significant issue impacting your well-being. Seek support:Talk to a trusted person or a healthcare professional about your financial worries and mental health. Stay engaged:Continue to see friends, stay active, and maintain your daily routine to foster a sense of control. This week we would like to highlight Help Guide if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.helpguide.org/mental-health/stress/coping-with-financial-stressPlease leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingWe drop an episode every ThuSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S14E6 - Avoid This

Send us Fan MailAs humans, we are wired to move toward pleasure and avoid pain. We do this in many ways, including through five main types of avoidance. Avoidance is a part of life. There are times when you avoid people, places, or things because you know already know how the situation will turn out (and it's not good)We feel afraid of certain things (like inadequacy, looking bad, imperfection, disappointment, shame, embarrassment, failure), so we avoid them. When we avoid someone troubling or something difficult, we sometimes believe we can avoid the stress and anxiety associated with it.Avoidance therapy, also known as avoidance conditioning, is a behavioral therapy technique that aims to reduce unwanted behaviors by associating them with unpleasant stimuli. It's a type of counterconditioning where a negative stimulus is paired with the undesirable behavior, with the goal of creating an aversion to that behavior. While it can be effective in the short term, it's often used in conjunction with other therapies and is not typically considered a standalone treatment. How Avoidance Therapy Works:Pairing:The core principle involves pairing the unwanted behavior with an unpleasant stimulus, such as a bad taste or a mild electric shock.Aversion:The goal is to create an aversion to the unwanted behavior, making it less likely to occur.Counterconditioning:This process aims to replace the positive association with the unwanted behavior with a negative one. This week we would like to highlight River Bank Therapy if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.riverbanktherapy.com/blog/5-tools-for-dealing-with-avoidancePlease leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingWe drop an episode every ThursdaySupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S14E5 - Grief Within

Send us Fan MailGrief within yourself, also known as self-grief, is the process of mourning changes or losses within yourself, particularly after a significant trauma or loss that alters your identity or sense of self. It's a natural and necessary part of healing, allowing you to acknowledge and integrate these changes rather than suppressing them. Why is Self-Grief Important?Authenticity: Mourning for your past self allows you to move forward authentically and integrate changes into your identity.Healing: Ignoring self-grief can hinder healing, while acknowledging it allows you to process emotions and adapt to new circumstances.Self-Compassion: Self-grief allows you to extend compassion to the parts of yourself that have been hurt or changed, fostering self-love and acceptance. Navigating Self-Grief:Acknowledge and Allow: Accept that it's okay to grieve for the past and that it's a normal part of healing. Seek Support: Connect with friends, family, or a therapist for support during this process. Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, recognizing that you are doing your best to navigate these changes. Engage in Self-Care: Prioritize activities that bring you comfort and joy, and nurture your physical and mental well-being. This week we would like to highlight Grief in Common if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://blog.griefincommon.com/self-esteem-grief-the-hidden-loss/Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingWe drop an episode every ThursdaySupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S14E4 - Everyone's Opinions

Send us Fan MailThere’s a theory that says that because humans were once heavily dependent on one another for survival, our brains are wired to sense fear when we’re at risk of being “on the outs” with society. Centuries ago, it was a literal threat to be ostracized from the tribe.  Being banished from the group meant we’d be on our own and vulnerable to attack by predators, and less successful at hunting the food we’d need to survive. While it’s unlikely that being disapproved of by your friends or family would result in death today, this theory says we were created with an internal warning system that hasn’t evolved along with the rest of our brain and thinking, so we continue to be overly sensitive to the approval of others. We Were Made For RelationshipI’m not so sure that humans just “evolved” in order to survive as a species, but I do believe that our Creator made us with brains that are capable of adapting as the universe evolves. And I for sure believe that we were created for relationship. Here are some key questions you can ask yourself to help you to stand in confidence rather than fear. What am I really afraid of here? What’s at stake? How does what they think impact me?Do I value this person’s opinion?Do I value his/her values? Do their values match mine? Are there areas of my life where it’s okay to not see eye-to-eye with this person? Can I give this person the grace and freedom to think differently than me?It can also be helpful to remind yourself that you have options. S13E11 - Gabbing

Send us Fan MailThe phrase "to love is to will the good of the other" is a quote attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas. It means that love, at its core, involves a desire and intention to act for the benefit of another person, rather than for one's own self-interest. This concept emphasizes a selfless and active form of love, where one actively seeks the well-being of the loved one. Here's a more detailed explanation:Beyond Feelings:Love goes beyond mere emotional affection. It highlights the volitional aspect of love, meaning it's about choosing to act in ways that are beneficial for the other person. Active Pursuit of the Other's Good:It's not just wishing well for someone; it's actively seeking to promote their well-being, even if it requires sacrifice or effort on your part. Selflessness:This definition emphasizes a selfless love that puts the needs and desires of the other person first. Examples:This could manifest in various ways, such as offering support, providing encouragement, speaking the truth with kindness, or even making sacrifices to help someone achieve their goals. Contrast with Self-Interest:It contrasts with actions motivated solely by self-interest or personal gain. This week we would like to highlight The Mental Health Coalition if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.thementalhealthcoalition.org/reclaim-your-roots/Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingWe drop an episode every ThursdayFollow us on all of our socials Support the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S13E9 - Future Tripping

Send us Fan MailFuture tripping," also known as anticipatory anxiety, refers to the psychological phenomenon of excessive worrying and anxiety about potential future events. It involves overthinking and trying to control the future, often leading to heightened stress and distress. Instead of focusing on the present, individuals engaging in future tripping tend to project themselves into the future, imagining negative scenarios and potential problems. Key aspects of future tripping:Anticipatory anxiety:This is the core characteristic, where anxiety arises from worrying about events that haven't happened yet. Overthinking and control:It involves excessive mental processing and attempting to predict and control future outcomes, which is often unrealistic and unhelpful. Focus on the negative:The tendency is to focus on potential negative consequences and worst-case scenarios rather than considering positive possibilities. Detachment from the present:Future tripping detracts from living in the present moment, potentially leading to missed opportunities and decreased enjoyment of daily life. This week we would like to highlight HealthyPlace if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.healthyplace.com/blogs/treatinganxiety/2015/07/avoid-future-tripping-when-you-have-anxietyPlease leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingWe drop an episode every ThursdayFollow us on all of our socials Support the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S13S8 - Confidence: Life, Dating, and Whole

Send us Fan MailDating confidence involves believing in your value as a person and feeling comfortable in your own skin while dating. It's about approaching dating with a positive attitude and a willingness to take risks, rather than focusing on perceived flaws or the expectations of others. Ultimately, confidence is about recognizing your worth and being able to express yourself authentically. Building Dating Confidence:Focus on self-improvement:Engage in activities that boost your self-esteem, such as pursuing hobbies, working on fitness goals, or learning new skills. Practice self-compassion:Be kind and understanding towards yourself, especially when facing setbacks or rejections. Set boundaries:Establish clear limits on your time and energy, and don't be afraid to say no to things that don't align with your values. Develop a pre-date routine:Create a ritual that helps you relax and feel grounded before a date, such as listening to music, practicing meditation, or engaging in a mindful exercise. Visualize success:Imagine yourself having a positive and fulfilling date, and focus on the positive outcomes you desire. Remember that everyone is nervous:Acknowledge that dating can be nerve-wracking for everyone, and try to be understanding of your date's emotions. Focus on connection:Prioritize getting to know your date's personality and interests, rather than trying to impress them. Be authentic:Allow your true self to shine, and don't try to be someone you're not. Don't take rejection personally:Remember that not everyone is going to be a good match, and focus on learning from each experience. Seek support:Connect with friends, family, or a therapist for guidance and encouragement. This week we would like to highlight HealthyPlace if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://www.healthyplace.com/blogs/buildingselfesteem/2018/02/how-to-start-dating-with-confidencePlease leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingWe drop an episode every ThursdayFollow us on all of our socialsSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S13E7 - Ikigai

Send us Fan MailIkigai (生きがい) is a Japanese concept that translates to "a reason for being" or "a reason to live," referring to a sense of purpose or passion that makes life meaningful and enjoyable. It's a framework that helps individuals discover their unique purpose by aligning their passions, skills, and values with societal needs. Here's a more detailed explanation:Finding Your Ikigai:The concept encourages people to identify what they love doing, what they're good at, what the world needs, and what they can be paid for. Purpose and Passion:Ikigai suggests that a life filled with purpose, passion, and a sense of contribution to the world leads to greater fulfillment and happiness. Ikigai and Longevity:Some believe that finding and pursuing one's ikigai contributes to a longer, more meaningful life. Relevance to Western Cultures:While rooted in Japanese culture, the concept of ikigai has resonated with people in Western cultures as a tool for self-discovery and purpose-driven living. Ikigai Diagram:A visual representation, the Ikigai Diagram or Venn Diagram, helps people explore the intersection of their passions, skills, values, and societal needs to find their unique ikigai. This week we would like to highlight The Discovery Mood if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://discoverymood.com/blog/national-mens-health-awareness-month/Please leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingWe drop an episode every ThursdayFollow us on all of our socialsSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States. S13E6 - Life Is Like A ______

Send us Fan MailYou know that one saying from the movie Forrest Gump, "My momma always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.". This quote is often attributed to his mother, but is spoken by Forrest himself in the movie. This metaphor compares the unpredictability of life to a box of chocolates, where you don't know what flavors or types of chocolate you'll find until you open the box and try them. Just like in life, some experiences will be enjoyable, some may be unpleasant, and you won't know what to expect until they come along. Uncertainty and Surprise:The quote highlights the element of surprise and unpredictability in life. You may not know what challenges or opportunities are coming your way, just as you don't know what flavors are hidden within a box of chocolates. Embracing the Unknown:The phrase encourages a willingness to embrace the unknown. It suggests that while you can't predict the outcome of every situation, you should be prepared to accept and adapt to whatever life presents. Randomness:The quote can also be seen as a reflection of the random and often chaotic nature of events in life. Like a box of chocolates, life can offer both pleasant and unexpected experiences. The Importance of Experience:It suggests that life is best lived by experiencing its various facets, whether they are pleasant or challenging. Each "chocolate" (experience) adds to the overall flavor of life. Acceptance and Flexibility:The quote can also be interpreted as a call to acceptance and flexibility. Just as you might not always get the chocolate you desire, life may not always offer what you expect. However, the emphasis is on accepting and adapting to the unexpected, like trying a chocolate you weren't initially sure about. This week we would like to highlight The Autism Project if you would like to learn more or donate click the link below https://theautismproject.org/parents-families/programs-resources/family-supportPlease leave a comment and review our episode and give some feedback on what we can improve on!Thank You All For Listening and DownloadingWe drop an episode every ThursdayFollow us on all of our socialsSupport the showThe 988 Lifeline988 is now active across the United States.
