A word from Andy Lauer on Genesis: March/April Holiness Today Issue

In case you missed it, the March/April 2026 issue of Holiness Today came out earlier this month. This edition is a deep dive into the book of Genesis, exploring the foundational stories of our faith and how they continue to shape our journey of holiness. In this issue, we walk through the "days" of the patriarchs and the very beginnings of creation with a powerful lineup of scholars and leaders: Frank Moore explores "The Days of Creation," examining the spiritual insights we can gain from our physical senses. Jim Edlin reflects on "The Days of Adam," reminding us that Adam’s story of blessing and brokenness is also our story. Gabriel Benjiman looks at "The Days of Noah," using the ark as a witness to God’s gracious invitation. Timothy Green discusses "The Days of Abraham," focusing on the interwoven threads of call, promise, and covenant. Paige Graves examines "The Days of Isaac," describing him as the essential "middleman" of the divine covenant blessing. David Snodgrass writes on "The Days of Jacob," detailing the transformation from a life of striving to one of total dependence on God. T. Scott Daniels concludes the series with "The Days of Joseph," highlighting how God’s sovereign love turns harm into global redemption. On this episode, we are featuring the audio from Andy Lauer’s "A Word From..." segment. Andy is the lead pastor of South Bend First Church of the Nazarene, and in this talk he discusses how Jesus Christ is present throughout the entire arc of salvation history—notably from the beginning in Genesis. Nazarene Archives ep 80: Eugene Stowe preaches on prayer

Eugene Stowe explores why specific prayers often go unanswered and refutes "prosperity" theology. He argues that effective prayer must align with God's sovereign will, which humans cannot fully grasp. By linking Philippians, 1 John, and Romans, Stowe posits that the Holy Spirit acts as both an "Intercessor" and "Interceptor." When believers offer "improper" prayers outside God’s plan, the Spirit intercepts and corrects them, substituting human desires with divine necessities. This process ensures God always supplies a believer’s true needs, allowing them to trust the outcome even when it differs from their original request.   Lifelong Learning Code: 28473 Click here to learn about Lifelong Learning.

Nazarene Archives ep 79: Chic Shaver preaches on "Love Enough to Keep Them Warm"

Former evangelism professor Chick Shaver compares the local church to a hospital nursery, where new converts are "spiritual infants" requiring specialized care and warmth. He warns that without this intentional care, many converts perish spiritually within weeks. Shaver illustrates this through Dan and Judy, a couple who faced indifference at two churches before finding a welcoming community. The intentional outreach by laypeople and the pastor ultimately led to the couple’s conversion and to their own ministry to others, demonstrating that a warm congregational climate is vital for spiritual growth. This sermon declares that God's people possess an unstoppable joy that flourishes even in life’s most barren "deserts". Rooted in Isaiah 35, the message distinguishes true joy from fleeting happiness, describing it as a "living reality" that does not wait for perfect circumstances. Instead, this joy audaciously erupts amidst brokenness, just as a botanical "superbloom" transforms a wilderness with radiant life. The speaker assures listeners that God is actively turning their sorrow into everlasting gladness, promising that joy will ultimately triumph and drive all sorrow away.   Lifelong Learning Code: 80890 Click here to learn about Lifelong Learning.

Stephen Willis preaches on Peace, week two of Advent

This Advent sermon focuses on the theme of peace, illustrated as a "two-sided coin". The first side is "peace with God," established through the birth of Jesus and salvation. The second side is the "peace of God," which requires believers to trust God rather than leaning on their own understanding. The speaker emphasizes that biblical peace is not the absence of conflict, but rather the presence of God amidst life's struggles. The message concludes by inviting listeners to find this peace through prayer and faith.   Lifelong Learning Code: 80890 Click here to learn about Lifelong Learning.

Nazarene Archives ep 77: Jerald Johnson, former General Superintendent on "Dealing with Opposition in Ministry"

General Superintendent Jerald Johnson offers guidance on how pastors can creatively face opposition in their work for Christ. Pastors, like political leaders, must present programs and budgets and convince others. Johnson discusses the right to dissent within the Church of the Nazarene and how opposition allows a pastor to test their ideas. He advises against reacting to opposition and instead suggests letting proposals be tested by time. Ultimately, a pastor must stand tall as a leader, minister to the church, and rely on God's help for every difficult situation.   Lifelong Learning Code: 80890 Click here to learn about Lifelong Learning.

Nazarene Archives ep 68: Orville Jenkins, former General Superintendent on The Inward Man Renewed

In this March 1981 address, General Superintendent Orville Jenkins discusses the spiritual requirements for effective preaching for holiness ministers. He states that a minister's life must be one of unreservedly giving oneself to the indwelling Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to fill them with joy and victory so they can preach with power and anointing. Jenkins uses the Apostle Paul as the ultimate example, noting that Paul's "outward man" was "perishing" from his intense suffering and physical struggles as a "vessel of clay". However, Paul’s "inward man" was being renewed day by day through the "supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ". This daily spiritual renewal, Jenkins concludes, is God's plan for every spirit-filled minister. Lifelong Learning Code: 80890 Click here to learn about Lifelong Learning.

Nazarene Archives ep 67: Eugene Stowe, former General Superintendent on Building Quality Membership

Eugene Stowe addresses the critical relationship between church growth and the quality of its membership. He shares an incident where a pastor gently deferred a new convert's request to join immediately, insisting she attend the membership training class first. The core message is that a strong church demands qualified members; pastors must not compromise standards or build with "inferior material" for the sake of numbers. Training should cover church beliefs, ethical standards, and entire sanctification, ensuring new members are truly ready to accept the church's manual position. The goal is enduring quality, not statistical casualties.   *This appeared on the Ministers' Tape Club in September of 1979 as the "state of the church" segment given by the General Superintendents.   Lifelong Learning Code: 80890 Click here to learn about Lifelong Learning.

Nazarene Archives ep 65: George Coulter, former General Superintendent on revival

This recording features General Superintendent George Coulter from the February 1979 edition of the Minister's Tape Club. He begins by expressing his appreciation for the Church of the Nazarene's positive factors, including the generosity of its members, the love expressed toward pastors, a sound organizational structure, and the centrality of its holiness message. However, Dr. Coulter expresses deep concern over the church's dismally small overall growth rate, which suggests a greater problem with retaining members than with recruiting new ones. This leads to his primary conviction: the Church of the Nazarene desperately needs a heaven-sent revival. He warns that the church could become barren, powerless, and spiritually bankrupt if it loses its vitality. Dr. Coulter emphasizes that this needed revival is not a program or a meeting, but an inner, personal quickening and renewal that must first begin with the ministers. He challenges them to exhibit credibility, humility, and Christ's likeness, rise above selfishness, and live by God's prescription: to humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways. He pleads for a return to the joy and vitality the church once experienced.   Lifelong Learning Code: 80890 Click here to learn about Lifelong Learning.
