Islam in Southeast Asia - An Interview with Khairudin Aljunied (Throwback)

When I first started my graduate education, I was attracted to the framework of Abrahamic Religions or the idea that Jews, Christians and Muslims should return back to their founder, Abraham, to better understand their faiths and move beyond contemporary differences.  In the last several years, I have been traveling to Southeast Asia through the Barzinji Institute for Global Virtual Learning at Shenandoah University which I direct.  Through my travels, I have seen the power and influence of Islam in the region and how it interacts with other religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism.  I sit down with one of the foremost experts in Islam in Southeast Asia, Khairudin Aljunied, to better understand the region and Islam's relationship with other faiths.  Send me a text regarding your feedback, comments and questionsSubscribe to the Islamic Mary podcast which is available on the major podcast streaming services, such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube.Order my new book The Islamic Mary: Maryam Through the Centuries Take my quiz on the Islamic Mary which is based on my research and teaching Visit my website to learn more about my bio, research, and blogs.Join my listserve to be updated about my research, speaking and publications, especially my book on the Islamic Mary. Thanks for listening to The Islamic Mary Podcast!

Islamic Mary Book Talk at Shenandoah University

We had a great book talk at Shenandoah University's library on my book "The Islamic Mary: Maryam Through the Centuries"!  I enjoyed speaking about the origins of my book, Mary/Maryam in the Qur'an and why she matters today.  I came of age in an era of the "Clash of Civilizations" and shared figures allow us to think of what relationships, bridges and partnerships are possible.  The Barzinji Institute for Global Virtual Learning continues and implements much of my work in religious and interreligious studies.  The Questions and Answers period was dynamic and I shared how the Islamic Mary even helps various Christians think about the role of Mary within their own traditions.

Aaron - The Helper and Sibling Prophet

Various Biblical and Qur'anic prophets play different roles, ranging from parents to children.  Aaron/Harun plays the role of a sibling, helping his brother Moses/Musa on his mission against Pharaoh and being a loyal aid and companion.  Moses/Musa specifically asks God for Aaron/Harun's help because he trusts him and is more articulate and eloquent.

The Chapter of Constellations and the Christians of Najran

In the Chapter of Constellations (Surat al-Buruj), there is a debate on who it refers to: the Christians of Najran, the Disbelievers in the Hellfire or the Biblical story in Daniel.  I go through recent scholarship on the topic and agree with Walid Saleh that it refers to the Christians of Najran.  The Christians of Najran were persecuted for their faith and were models of resilience and fortitude to the early Muslim community.

    Luqman - The Wise Father

When we think of fathers, the stereotypical image of somebody who is stern, domineering and even coercive may come up.  In the stereotypical image of Islam, fathers are simply breadwinners and maintainers and arrange their daughters into unhappy and unloving marriages.  Today, we explore the image of Luqman who is seen in the Qur'an as wise and teaches his son morals and etiquette.  Luqman presents the image of a father who is teacher, mentor and guide.

The Eid of Jesus - Inclusivity, Signs and Sustenance

Muslims around the world are celebrating "Eid", in particular "the Eid of the Breaking of the Fast".  I examine how the word "Eid" is used in the Qur'an, particularly in the words of Jesus/'Isa.  Based on the request of his Disciples, Jesus/'Isa makes a prayer to God asking for a celebration and feast.  He emphasizes the idea of inclusivity, divine signs and God being the provider.

The Faith of Muslim Political Prisoners - An Interview with Walaa Quisay

In many Biblical and Qur'anic stories, the protagonist isolates themselves and, at times, even go to prison.  In this interview, I chat with Walaa' Qusaiy about her new book "When Only God Can See: The Faith of Muslim Political Prisoners".  Walaa' discusses how faith and spirituality of Muslim prisoners merge with that of prophetic ones, and how they find inspiration and hope in their stories.   The prison experience is pervasive in Muslim society and Islamic scholarship and we need to study that space to better understand the lives of the various Muslim scholars and activists.

Jacob - The Emotional and Spiritual Father

I have been thinking about fathers recently: what do they do? What is their function?  How are they effectively?  Today, I dive into the Biblical and Qur'anic Jacob/Yaqub and explore how the Qur'an understands fathers, especially in terms of their spiritual and mentorship role.  Jacob/Yaqub is open about his emotions, complains to God, and encourages his sons to have belief or hope.

Understanding Salafism - An Interview with Yasir Qadhi (Throwback)

One of the reasons I became interested in Biblical and Qur'anic figures is because I did my dissertation and initial research on the medieval Ibn Kathir (d. 774/1373) and Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328).  Both Ibn Kathir and Ibn Taymiyya engaged the Arabic Bible and wrote on Biblical literature and its relationship to the Qur'an.  These figures today would be understood as "salafis".  But what does that mean?  I sit down with Yasir Qadhi to discuss the meaning of "salafism", his relationship to the movement, and the potential for a more inclusive Islam.

Maryam's Fast - Silence, Spirituality and Miracles (Throwback)

As the month of Ramadan approaches, I wanted to explore the word "fasting" (sawm) in the story of Maryam.  While most Muslims understand the word "fasting" as abstaining from food and drink, the word "fasting" is used in the Chapter of Maryam in reference silence.  The use of the word in the Story allows us to better understanding "fasting" as abstaining from something for a greater spiritual benefit and higher good.Send me a text regarding your feedback, comments and questionsSubscribe to the Islamic Mary podcast which is available on the major podcast streaming services, such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube.Order my new book The Islamic Mary: Maryam Through the Centuries Take my quiz on the Islamic Mary which is based on my research and teaching Visit my website to learn more about my bio, research, and blogs.Join my listserve to be updated about my research, speaking and publications, especially my book on the Islamic Mary. Thanks for listening to The Islamic Mary Podcast!

Reinventing Islam - An Interview with Deanna Womack

I have always wondered about the roots of modern day Islamophobia?  When did it start?  How did it develop?  How was it formed?  In this interview, Deanna Womack takes us into her new book "Re-inventing Islam: Gender and the Protestant Roots of American Islamophobia" where she examines the connection between the history of missions and contemporary Islamophobia.  Along the way, she provides a more nuanced understanding of missionaries, their lives, goals and aspirations.  Many of them would eventually became champions of interfaith dialogue and build bridges between the civilizations.

    David and Bathsheba

David/Dawud is represented in the Islamic tradition as a righteous ruler who combines worship and kingship, piety and authority.  One story that emerges in the Biblical and Qur'anic literature is that David/Dawud sees Bathsheba bathing, leading him to have an affair with her, kill her husband and then marrying her.  Various Muslim commentators struggled with this story, with some saying that he only had relations with her after marriage and with others rejecting the story altogether.

The Call - Verse 3 and 4 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam) (Throwback)

My father passed away this week so I reshare an older episode of Zechariah/Zakariyya who resembled my father in his age, spirituality and caretaking.  Verse 3 and 4 of the chapter of Mary (surat Maryam) captures about the private call of Zechariah/Zakariyya as he prays to have a child.  Before he makes his please, he speaks about his weakness - his brittle bones and white hair - and emphasizes his unique relationship with God.  Zechariah's/Zakariyya's call is similar to other calls of vulnerability in the Qur'an, such as that of Jonah/Yunus.

One of the questions I received in presenting on The Islamic Mary is why is Maryam silent?  This question is connected to a larger question about women and religion and their speech, agency, and power in various scriptures.  I analyze Maryam's speech in the Qur'an and contend that it represents spirituality, vulnerability and agency.

The Lament - Verse 23 in the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam) (Throwback)

In the climax of the story, Maryam makes a remarkable statement: "I wish I had died before this and been a thing forgotten".  Qur'anic commentators understood this statement as part of the pain and suffering of the righteous and that when trials became too difficult believers would some times wish that they did not exist.  The statement also connects with the larger theme of life and death which is found within the Qur'an and the with the chapter (surat) of Maryam in particular.

Christians, Muslims and Mary - An Interview with Rita George-Tvrtkovic (Throwback)

When I started my career, I was interested in the figure of Abraham/Ibrahim and how he could be a bridge figure between Christians, Jews and Muslims.  However, as I wrote my book on "The Bible and the Qur'an: Biblical Figures in the Islamic Tradition," I became more interested in the figure of Mary and how she could bring Christians and Muslims together.  This led me to the work of Rita George-Tvrtkovic, especially her book "Christian, Muslims and Mary" and subsequent articles. I sit down with Rita to learn about her innovative scholarship, institutional roles and recent academic interests.

How Can We Speak to an Infant? - Verse 29 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam)

When Maryam returns to her people, she mocked and told that she come from a righteous family, her father was a good man and her mother was chaste.  In response, she points to her child leading the people to once again criticize her saying "how can we speak to an infant"?  The verse speaks once again to the idea of speech and silence in the Qur'an and how God is the ultimate speaker.

Maryam and the Clash of Civilizations

I speak about a recent keynote address that I gave at the Pacific Northeast Virtual Exchange conference where I connect my research on the Islamic Mary or Maraym to COIL Virtual Exchange.  Growing up in the 90s, there was a strong push for the "Clash of Civilizations" thesis, or that the "West" was in an intrinsic conflict with "Orient" and "Islam".  It was "Islam versus the West" or the "West versus the Rest".  Both my research and virtual exchange challenge this thesis and demonstrate that people from different regions of the world can learn from each other and mutually coexist.

Interreligious Studies - An Interview with Rachel Mikva (Throwback)

One of the reason I have been drawn to the Islamic Mary or Maryam is the idea of a shared figure between various religious traditions and the interactions between them.  This led me to the emerging field of Interreligious Studies and to the new book Interreligious Studies: An Introduction by Rachel Mikva.  I sit down with Rachel to talk about defining Interreligious Studies, how it is different from other fields, and how it is relevant to Jewish-Muslim relations and the current crisis in the Middle East.

Sister of Aaron - Verse 28 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam)

As part of the slander against Maryam, her people reference her family.  They say that she comes from a noble lineage and her father was a decent man and her mother was not unchaste.  The verse connects Maryam once again to Moses/Musa and his mother and speaks to the idea of criticism and family expectations.

The Slander - Verse 27 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam)

After Maryam has her child Jesus/'Isa, she has to return to her people and face their judgement and criticism.  Maryam "carries" her child which echoes how Noah was "carried" in the ark.  Also, Maryam is attacked for her perceived sexual immorality which is similar to other figures in the life of the Prophet Muhammad, such as his wife 'Aisha.  The slander, accusations, and criticism eventually lead to her defense through the words of Jesus/'IsaSend me a text regarding your feedback, comments and questionsSubscribe to the Islamic Mary podcast which is available on the major podcast streaming services, such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube.Order my new book The Islamic Mary: Maryam Through the Centuries Take my quiz on the Islamic Mary which is based on my research and teaching Visit my website to learn more about my bio, research, and blogs.Join my listserve to be updated about my research, speaking and publications, especially my book on the Islamic Mary. Thanks for listening to The Islamic Mary Podcast!

One God and Two Religions - An Interview with Amir Hussain

When I was writing The Islamic Mary, I became further interested in the field of Christian and Muslim dialogue and its relevancy today and in the future.  This led me to various books published on the topic, such as Amir Hussain's new book One God and Two Religions: Christians and Muslims as Neighbors.  Amir's book is unique in that it speaks about Christians and Muslim worshipping the same God and living next to each other as neighbors.   I sit down with Amir to discuss his spiritual biography, his new book and its implications for today's world.

The Vow of Silence - Verse 26 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam)

After Maryam is told to eat, drink and be glad, she told to take a vow of silence and not speak to anyone for an entire day.  The second half of verse 19:26 sets up the themes of God being the most merciful and the themes of silence and speech.  Maryam's silence leads to the speech of Jesus/'Isa.

Eat, Drink and Be Glad - Verse 26 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam)

After Maryam shakes the palm tree, she is told "to eat, drink, and be glad".  This phrase connects her with other Qur'anic mothers, such as the mother of Moses/Musa, and a larger Qur'anic theme of finding joy with your family.  Muslims frequently make a prayer that God should bestow upon them spouses and children who bring happiness to their heart.

A Devotional Qur'an - An Interview with Shawkat Toorawa

When I started writing my book The Islamic Mary: Maryam Through the Centuries, I was drawn to the Qur'anic chapter of Mary or Surat Maryam.  As I started to research the chapter, I came across the work of Shawkat Toorawa who focuses on the sound, rhyme and rhythm of the Qur'an and points out some of Surat Maryam's unique qualities and characteristics.  I was thus excited to see that he has come out with a new book entitled The Devotional Qur'an which translates key chapters and verses that are used in Muslim daily life.  I sit down with Shawkat to discuss his spiritual biography, academic background and new book.

Shake the Palm Tree - Verse 25 of the Chapter of Mary (Surat Maryam)

After Maryam calls out in pain and anguish, a voice calls telling her to shake a palm tree and ripe dates will fall upon her.  This is similar to other Qur'anic figures, such as Moses/Musa, who are told to act when they are in trying and difficult situation, such as when he was in front of the Red Sea.  The lesson is to act rather than allow the pain and sorrow overtake you.
