For the Lippis/Ixia evaluation at iSimCity, Brocade submitted the VDX™ 6740, which is Brocade’s flagship Top-of-Rack (ToR) switch that’s built with Brocade’s Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS™) technology, an Ethernet fabric innovation that addresses the unique requirements of highly virtualized, cloud data center environments.  The line-rate, low latency VDX™ 6740 fixed configuration switch is available in two models: the VDX™ 6740 with up to 64 1/10 GbE SFP+ ports, and the VDX™ 6740T with 48 1/10 GBASE-T ports and four 40 GbE SFP+ ports. We populated and tested the switch’s 10 and 40 GbE ports for performance and power consumption. To assure 100% throughput, that is no packet loss or network performance degradation takes place during an inter-chassis switch over, Cisco invested in its third generation of Virtual Switch System or VSS.  It introduced support for four Supervisors within a VSS, which it calls VS4O for short.  VS40 supports a VSS pair to be resilient to up to three simultaneous supervisor failures; providing deterministic and automated recovery from failures and increases network uptime tremendously in the campus backbone.  Sudeep Padiyar Senior Product Manager at Cisco Systems and Charles Okochu, Network Engineer at MarketAxess join me to discuss Cisco’s new additions to the Catalyst 6500 and the resiliency network design options it affords to Cisco customers.

Cisco introduced enhancements to its VXLAN implementation in the Nexus 1000V virtual switch that overcomes the requirement for IP Multicast.  In addition Cisco is integrating vPath to VXLAN for service insertion that stitches virtual services into VXLAN overlay tunnels. Network services might include virtual firewalls, application delivery controllers, WAN optimization, network monitors, etc.  A final VXLAN challenge that network teams are facing is how to integrate VXLAN into legacy networks and with existing physical networks, appliances and the enterprise WAN. No matter where an IT architect looks they are confronted with scaling issues and many times one solution creates another problem.  To address increasing VM density many are expanding broadcast domains with flatter 2-tier architectures only to get bogged down in broadcast issues.  To scale virtualized networks the industry offers VXLAN, but that moves L2 scaling into a multicast-scaling problem.  Software-Defined Network and in particular OpenFlow offers a good approach for provisioning and control but introduces flow oriented architecture scaling issues of its own.  I discuss scaling challenge with Shehzad Merchant Chief Technology Officer at Extreme Networks.

Dynamic Workload Scaling or Cloud bursting is commonly referred to as the ability to expand or contract workload between two or more virtualized data centers or cloud providers.  It sounds simple enough, but there has not been a practical approach to securely and automatically facilitate elastic IT resources in response to demand.  Cisco Systems is offering one of the most realistic approaches to cloud bursting that leverages the Nexus 7000 and its Application Control Engine or ACE load balancers.  Overlay Transport Virtualization or (OTV) is a feature of the Nexus 7000 and provides Layer 2 connectivity extension across any transport connecting two or more data centers.  ACE provides VM aware load balancing over OTV, which creates the basis for Cisco’s Dynamic Workload Scaling cloud bursting strategy.  I talk with Dave Dhillon Product Marketing Manager at Cisco Systems as we dive into Cisco’s approach to cloud bursting.

Cisco ONE utilizes the multi-hypervisor Nexus 1000V virtual switch to create virtual network overlays and will be enabling programmability through programmatic interfaces to its virtual supervisor module (VSM), enabling automation-centric provisioning.   To make virtual overlays functionally equivalent to physical data center networks, virtual Layer 4-7 application network and virtual security Scalability issues have overcome what VLANs were designed to provide.  In multi-tenant cloud computing environments with each tenant having many applications many of which require their own logical network segments, the 4k limit of VLANs does not scale.  And as cloud networks grow beyond data centers, logically isolated subnets have to be expanded to include geographic scale. Challenges include application mobility over very large resource pools that cover multiple sites, while ensuring the same consistency and logical network policy constraints.  Enter VXLAN, jointly announced last summer by industry heavy-weights Cisco Systems, VMware, Red Hat, Arista and others.  Han Yang Senior Product Manager at Cisco Systems joins me to discuss VXLAN in virtual networking and the challenge to logically isolate virtual subnets in highly scalable, multi-tenant data centers.

Cisco’s multi-protocol storage initiative brings all storage protocols into its unified fabric.  Just like the days of multi-protocol routing, IT managers were able to manage the transition to IP networking after routing supported multiple network protocols such as DECnet, AppleTalk, etc.  In short applications that relied upon vendor specific protocols were supported and thus the transition to IP was regulated by how fast the application could support IP.  The same is true in modern data centers; build a unified fabric that is capable of supporting multi-protocol storage and IT business leaders can transition to a single storage protocol over time and gain simplification, lower life cycle cost and faster application deployment.  Rajeev Bhardwaj, Sr. Director of Product Management in the data center group at Cisco Systems is responsible for the MDS, Nexus and load balancing products making him the idea executive to discuss multi-protocol storage networking and the transition toward a converged or unified data center infrastructure.

Shortest Path Bridging or SPB was ratified in March of 2012 by the IEEE.  Its an active-active link protocol that replaces the older Spanning Tree Protocols.  SPB is touted as a means to simplify the creation and configuration of carrier, enterprise and cloud networks by virtually eliminating human configuration error.  In short, SPB is designed to scale. Avaya, an SPB leader, has implemented it within its data center and campus networking products in a hope to drastically simply the configuration of enterprise wide virtual networks.  Paul Unbehagen an SPB co-author and Avaya Director working on next generation fabric standards and implementations joins me to discuss SPB and the value it brings to enterprise and data center network design.

June 6, 2012 was World IPv6 day, which marked the transition toward IPv6 on a global basis and will forever be the transition reference point.  Close to 30% of pages viewed on the Internet globally were reachable over IPv6 after June 6th 2012.  In May of 2012 there were only 519 sites IPv6 enabled or about 3% of web content.  That number jumped to more than 2500 sites or approximately 30% according to Cisco.   In this Lippis Report podcast I talk with Alain Fiocco Senior Director of Cisco's IPv6 High Impact Project as we discuss IPv6 transition adoption and what it means to you. 

Cisco commissioned Forrester Consulting to examine the total economic impact and potential return on investment (ROI) enterprises may realize by deploying Cisco Catalyst Access Switches.  They found that corporations that deployed Cisco Catalyst Access switches were better off by 14% than if they had deployed other Ethernet switches.  They also found that IT executives who deploy non Cisco Ethernet switches spend twice as much of TCO on operational cost.   I talk with Pradeep Parmar, Switching Marketing Manager at Cisco Systems on life cycle cost of network ownership and how Cisco’s Catalyst Access Switches deliver lower operational cost.

Siemens Enterprise Communications released the results of its State of Enterprise Communications 2012 Study, which found, not surprisingly that pure IP infrastructures save enterprises 43% over traditional PBX systems.  The study found that an increasingly mobile workforce is forcing more enterprises to adapt cloud technology and that staff training and headcount issues often delay a company’s migration to a unified communications (UC) platform.  The study examines enterprise communications practices worldwide, including the influences of mobile and cloud computing on communications infrastructures.  Rick Puskar SVP of Global Portfolio Management Innovation at Siemens is my guest as we discuss the state-of-enterprise communications and how IT business leaders can gain from its findings.

Ruckus, an Enterprise supplier latecomer achieved the highest year-over-year revenue growth of all WLAN suppliers worldwide, growing over 134 %, according to Gartner’s Enterprise WLAN Equipment Market Share 4Q11 report.   For the second year, in the Service Provider Wi-Fi space, Ruckus was identified as the 2011 market leader with a 26.7 % share of Wi-Fi mesh node shipments, according to Dell’Oro.
