Ep. 53a Welcome to Season Three
Some podcasts give you content. This one gives you a conversation. That was always the idea. Martin Sanders and Carson Pue started it at a kitchen table, really. The mentoring that used to happen on long walks or over a shared meal had no place to live in the noise of modern leadership. So they made one. Martin is gone now. But the conversation continues. Chuck and Ingrid Davis stepped in at Carson’s invitation — not to fill a gap, but because Martin had mentored them too. It felt right. It still does. Season Two surprised them. The deeper they went, the more people leaned in. Stewarding suffering. Listening. Vulnerability. Failure as formation. These weren’t polished presentations. They were honest conversations between three people who have lived long enough in leadership to know what it actually costs. And listeners noticed. A pastor’s wife who sent the episode on communicating with adult children to her neighbour. A leader who heard the word “stewarding” before “suffering” for the first time and couldn’t stop thinking about it. That’s what this is for. Season Three continues where Season Two left off. Same table. Same honesty. No masks. No performance. Just Carson, Chuck, and Ingrid thinking out loud about the things leaders rarely say in public but think about all the time. If you’re a leader who has it all together, there are other podcasts for you. If you’re a leader willing to admit you don’t — welcome. You’re in good company. Season Three of The Mentored Podcast is live now. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, or find every episode right here at mentoredpodcast.net.

Ep. 52: The Power of Story (Season 2 Finale)
Everyone has a story. The real question is whether you know how to read yours. In this Season 2 finale, Carson, Chuck, and Ingrid dig into one of the most underused tools in a mentor’s hands — story. Not storytelling as a presentation skill, but story as the lens through which we understand our own lives, and help others understand theirs. Dan Allender puts it plainly: most people miss the deeper meaning of their own life because they don’t know how to read it. And as John McCauley adds, we’re not actually designed to read our stories accurately on our own. That’s where a mentor comes in. The conversation covers a lot of ground: the neuroscience behind why stories stick (Dr. Paul Zak’s work on oxytocin is worth knowing about), the danger of fixed narratives — those internal scripts that quietly limit us — and the extraordinary thing that happens when a mentor believes a better story about you before you can believe it yourself. They call it “borrowed belief.” It’s one of the most honest descriptions of what good mentoring actually does. Ingrid shares how she draws people’s stories out in practice. Carson brings the biblical frame — Jesus was, after all, history’s most effective storyteller. And the whole conversation ends with a practical challenge you can act on this week. To our 13,000-plus listeners: Season 2 has been something. Thank you for being part of it. Season 3 is coming.

Ep. 51 The Prayer of Indifference
Most of us walk into our biggest decisions already knowing what we want. We just want God to agree. That’s not prayer. That’s lobbying. The Prayer of Indifference is an ancient spiritual practice rooted in Ignatian tradition and the Quaker pursuit of surrender. At its core, it’s the willingness to say, “Lord, I don’t want what I want. I want what you want.” Simple to say. Genuinely costly to mean. In this episode, Carson, Chuck, and Ingrid unpack what holy indifference actually looks like in the life of a working leader. Not apathy. Not passivity. But a deep enough trust in God that you can set aside your attachments, your fears, and your preferred outcomes long enough to actually hear Him. If you’re a business leader weighing a decision that affects your team, a pastor navigating competing loyalties, an executive who suspects their ego is doing more of the talking than they’d like to admit, or a parent at home trying to discern what faithfulness actually looks like in the daily grind of family life, this conversation is for you. Most leaders don’t lack information when facing a hard decision. They lack freedom. Freedom from the fear of what others will think, from the pull toward comfort over calling, from the quiet pressure to choose the path with more applause. This practice won’t make hard decisions easy. But it may make them honest. So here’s the question worth sitting with before you press play: What would change if the outcome truly didn’t matter to you?

Ep. 50 Spiritual Authority vs. Institutional Power
There’s a kind of leader who commands a room without raising their voice. And there’s another kind who needs a title to be taken seriously. They are not the same. In this milestone 50th episode, Carson, Chuck, and Ingrid sit down with a question that cuts to the heart of every leader’s journey: Where does your authority actually come from? Institutional power is given. Spiritual authority is grown — slowly, often painfully, through faithfulness in hidden places. But in a world that rewards platforms, metrics, and organizational rank, it’s easy to confuse the two. And that confusion has consequences — for your team, your family, and your own soul. This conversation doesn’t offer easy answers. It asks better questions. What does it look like to lead from a place of genuine calling rather than positional leverage? What happens when your title disappears — do you still have something worth following? And how do you build the kind of authority that outlasts any role you’ll ever hold? Whether you lead a congregation, a company, or a family — this episode is worth your time.

Ep. 49 Self Regulation – Self Leadership
Leadership has an inside story that rarely makes the highlight reel. It’s the moment before the response. The pause before the decision. The quiet choice to lead yourself before you attempt to lead anyone else. In this episode, Carson, Chuck, and Ingrid sit with three case studies that bring self-regulation out of the theoretical and into the real — exploring what it actually costs a leader to stay authentic under pressure, to choose patience when urgency is screaming, and to take seriously the care of the body and soul that sustains everything else. These aren’t polished success stories. They’re honest looks at the interior life of leadership — and what happens when we neglect it. What is your leadership costing you on the inside? And is the person you’re becoming worth following?   The resource we mention at the close of the episode is Leading Me: Eight Practices for a Christian Leader’s Most Important Assignment by Dr. Steve A Brown.

Ep. 48 Being a Non-Anxious Presence
Anxiety is contagious. But so is calm. In this episode, we explore what it actually looks like for a leader to be a non-anxious presence — not by pretending everything is fine, but by being genuinely anchored when everything around them isn’t. What if the most important thing you carry into a room isn’t your strategy, but your steadiness? We unpack why anxious leaders create anxious cultures, what it costs an organization when the person at the top is always reacting, and the quiet discipline it takes to lead from a settled soul. This one will make you think honestly about what you’re really transmitting to the people around you.

Ep. 47 Failure of Heart and Nerve
What really stops leaders from leading? It’s rarely a lack of skill or strategy. More often, it’s one of two things: a failure of the heart — losing emotional connection to your mission and people — or a failure of the nerve — lacking the courage to act when it matters most. In this episode, Carson, Chuck, and Ingrid get honest about both. They explore how heartbreak shows up as disengagement, bitterness, and spiritual exhaustion, and how nerve failure hides behind indecision, avoidance, and compromised convictions. Drawing from real leadership scenarios and biblical examples — from Elijah’s despair to Saul’s fear — they unpack the ripple effects these failures have on teams, organizations, and the leaders themselves. More importantly, they talk about the way back: reconnecting with your calling, building emotional resilience, taking small courageous risks, and surrounding yourself with people who won’t let you stay stuck. If you’ve ever found yourself pulling back emotionally or hesitating when bold action was needed, this one’s for you.

Still, your response—and how you help others respond—can become a legacy, offering a lighted path for anyone finding themselves in a dark valley. We’ll share practical steps for mentors and those seeking mentorship, including insights you can apply right away: Sharing your struggles with appropriate transparency to build connection. Ep. 44 Stewarding Suffering (Part One)
We are originally posting this episode as we approach the Christmas season, a time often filled with joy and celebration, it’s also a time to reflect on the deeper story of hope born from humble and challenging circumstances. This episode is part one of our two-part series. We’re going to continue to go deeper than we did in Episode 43 on disappointment to discuss a topic that touches every leader: suffering. Suffering is a universal human experience, yet it often feels isolating, especially when you’re responsible for leading others. How do you respond when faced with personal loss, betrayal, or a professional crisis? Do you see it merely as something to endure, or could it be a sacred opportunity to trust God on a more profound level? In this episode, we explore how to steward seasons of suffering. We’ll look at biblical examples to understand that hardship is not a sign of failure or abandonment. Instead, it can be a path to perseverance, character, and hope. This time of year reminds us that even in the darkest moments, a great plan is unfolding. Just as the world waited for a Saviour, we too can find purpose in our waiting and pain. We’ll discuss some practical ways to navigate these difficult seasons, such as: Turning to God as your first response, not a last resort. Building a strong support system and embracing vulnerability. Practicing daily surrender to find peace amidst the turmoil. Leading with transparency to foster connection and strength within your team. Your suffering doesn’t define you, but how you respond to it can shape your leadership legacy. Join us for a heartfelt conversation about transforming pain into purpose and leading with a faith that shines brighter in the dark. Listen now to discover how God can write a beautiful story through your most challenging chapters. Be sure to share this episode with another leader who might need this encouragement today.

Ep. 43 Dealing with Disappointment
In Episode 43 of the Mentored Podcast, hosts Carson Pue, Chuck, and Ingrid Davis address a reality that every leader eventually faces: the challenge of dealing with disappointment. Whether it stems from a missed opportunity, a personnel change, or a vision that didn’t materialize as planned, disappointment can be disorienting. This episode offers a compassionate and practical roadmap for navigating these difficult emotions with wisdom. Rather than simply “pushing through” or burying the pain, the hosts encourage leaders to steward their experiences for growth. Key takeaways from this conversation include: Managing Emotions: Why validating your grief is essential for emotional health and avoiding bitterness. Reframing Setbacks: How to shift your perspective to see disappointment not as a failure, but as a step toward reorientation. Ep. 42 Moving Beyond The Enneagram
In this thought-provoking episode of the Mentored Podcast, Carson Pue, Chuck, and Ingrid Davis explore the concept of moving beyond singular assessment tools, such as the Enneagram, Birkman, DISC, or MBTI. While these instruments can provide valuable insights into personality, behaviour, and preferences, they are not the ultimate answer to understanding or mentoring others. As mentors, it’s crucial to avoid becoming overly reliant on any one framework. Together, we discuss the importance of adopting a more holistic and adaptable approach to mentorship. By integrating multiple perspectives and tools, mentors can better address the unique needs, goals, and growth opportunities of those they guide. Whether you’re a seasoned mentor or just starting your journey, this episode will challenge you to expand your toolkit, think critically about assessment instruments, and focus on the bigger picture of personal and professional development. So come and join us, as the next 30 minutes can really help you to be a better mentor and entertain you as you listen.

Ep. 39 Living With Your Feelings
Ever notice how the most successful leaders aren’t necessarily the smartest ones in the room? They’re often the ones who’ve mastered something we rarely talk about in leadership circles—their emotions. In this raw and insightful episode, Carson Pue, Chuck, and Ingrid Davis tackle the uncomfortable truth about emotional intelligence in leadership. Chuck opens up about his Midwestern upbringing, where feelings were seen as “unpredictable” and “no good”—a mindset that nearly sabotaged his marriage and ministry. You’ll hear Carson’s vulnerable story about his unexpected anxiety attacks and how his doctor’s refusal to prescribe medication led to a breakthrough therapy session involving… well, let’s just say dinosaur imagery played a role. Ingrid shares her research on “holistic holiness” and why ignoring our inner world stunts our spiritual growth. The conversation explores practical strategies like the WAIT acronym (Why Am I Talking?), the difference between being an emotional thermometer versus thermostat, and why Jesus’ tears matter more than you might think. They discuss the unique challenges female leaders face with emotions and how to create healthier team cultures. This isn’t about becoming more touchy-feely—it’s about becoming more effective. Because here’s the thing: if you can’t understand what’s happening inside you, how can you truly lead others? Ready to explore the intersection of faith, feelings, and leadership? Ep. 31 Longevity in Leadership
How do some leaders stay the course while others fall away? Leadership isn’t just about vision—it’s about longevity. Stick-to-it-iveness. That ability to keep going, even when the road gets rough, the work feels thankless, and the “greener pastures” come calling. This week on Mentored, we’re tackling the two sides of the longevity coin. Should leaders stay long enough to see real change, or does staying too long become counterproductive? What factors are causing a lack of longevity in leadership today? And how do calling, resilience, and holding out for the bigger picture all tie into the equation? We dig into the challenges of staying the course, share hard-hitting truths about why so many leave too soon, and reflect on the importance of being called to something bigger than yourself—even when the results might not show in your lifetime. If you’re a leader—young or seasoned—this episode asks the real questions: What’s keeping you grounded? What fuels your sense of calling? And are you giving yourself to something big enough? Tune in for wisdom, humour, and plenty of encouragement to keep running the race.

Ep. 30 Culture – The Heartbeat of Leadership
Have you stopped to think about the culture around you—the atmosphere that breathes life (or frustration) into your organization? Culture isn’t just a backdrop; it’s the driving force behind every decision, every interaction, and every success. As a leader, you’re not just living in culture; you’re shaping it, whether you’re intentional about it or not. Episode 30 of the Mentored Podcast dives deep into why culture is vital for leadership. From understanding social constructs to recognizing how different “families” operate—both at home and in the workplace—this episode opens your eyes to the power of worldview in shaping behaviour and expectations. You’ll discover why leaders are the ultimate culture shapers and how ignoring this responsibility can lead to toxic environments that slowly destroy organizations—and the leaders themselves. Peter Drucker was right when he quipped, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” What’s on your organization’s plate? This episode also tackles practical challenges like building trust before pushing for culture shifts and inviting fresh eyes to identify what might be invisible to those who’ve been around too long. One memorable takeaway? “The culture of any organization is shaped by the worst behaviour the leader is willing to tolerate.” Ouch, right? Insightful leadership experts and mentors Carson, Ingrid and Chuck drop wisdom every leader needs to hear. You’ll learn why lasting change takes time (3-5 years, to be exact) and how culture impacts not just your organization but your very soul. Are you ready to pause, reflect, and take your leadership to the next level? Tune in to Episode 30 now and reshape the culture you lead toward transformation and trust. The question isn’t whether culture matters—it does. The question is, what will you do about it? Ep. 29 Life Calling
Paul David HewsonPhoto credit pixabay Have you been humming U2’s “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” lately? Well, you’re not alone. A 2014 survey by the Barna Group found that 75% of American adults are seeking ways to live a more meaningful life. An article from Deep Psychology suggests that only 0.1% of people live their life calling, highlighting the challenges and fears associated with pursuing one’s true passion. These findings indicate that a significant portion of the population actively seeks greater meaning and fulfillment in their lives, and many are dissatisfied with their current work situations. So this episode of the Mentored Podcast is what you need to quiet that tune. We’re sitting down with our three seasoned sages of leadership and mentorship—Carson Pue, Chuck Davis, and Ingrid Davis—who are here to help you discover what you are looking for: your life calling. Carson brings his signature warmth and a knack for dropping those unforgettable “aha” moments that stick with you. Chuck mixes his profound reflections with insight that hits deeper than a bassline at a concert. And Ingrid? She ties it all together with a clarity born from her experience, like a melody you didn’t know your soul needed. They’ll answer the questions you’ve been asking yourself, like, “How do I really know my calling?” and “Can mentorship show me the way?” Whether you’re just starting to find your path, mentoring others, or still belting out Bono’s greatest hits in frustration, this conversation will inspire, challenge, and equip you to step boldly into the life you were meant to live. Trust us; this one’s worth turning the volume down on your playlist to listen in on their conversation.

Ep. 27 A Legacy of Leadership – Remembering with Bo Sanders
This deeply moving final episode of The Mentored Podcast, Season One, explores the profound legacy of our co-host and mentor, Martin Sanders. Joining Carson in the studio is Martin’s son Bo, who carries forward much of his father’s wisdom, humour, and unshakable commitment to developing others. With his father Martin’s unexpected death in January 2024, the conversation is a heartfelt tribute and a powerful reflection on what it means to leave a lasting mark on those you love and lead. Martin’s son Bo offers a glimpse into the man behind the mic — the father who instilled values, the mentor who shaped lives, and the leader whose influence transcended generations. Listeners will hear about the resilience of someone’s legacy and the beautiful blend of grief, gratitude, and inspiration that comes with it.
