In these brief 'Moments of Mood', I take a few minutes to share my thoughts on a specific subject, and in today's commentary I ponder how many of us think about the techniques and practices of photography. As such do absorb a large opportunity cost compared to thinking first about art, before we even think about photography, and thus do we miss out on greater expression, boundless creativity and higher inspirations. This episode dismantles the myth that technical prowess is all it takes to create visually stunning photographs. I advocate for an approach that puts expressional creativity at the heart of your photography, shifting the focus from mere technique to creating art. Nikola Kostic is a Serbian-born photographer who has called Bali home for the last 20 years. Although now more into video and film-making, photography is still his greatest passion – in fact he often thinks that it is the very reason for his existence. He experiments with different styles and subjects, but his main fascination is cultures in transition. With the islands of the Indonesian archipelago, and the vibrant countries of south east Asia on his doorstep he is never short of inspiration, and spends much of his time on the road (and on the ocean) capturing the magic of life through a series of fleeting moments.
