Low-carb diets are everywhere… praised for rapid weight loss, better blood sugar, and metabolic health. But what if there's another side to the story that most people aren't talking about? In this episode of The Other Side of Medicine, Dr. James Krystosik uncovers the truth about low-carb diets—what they do inside your body, how they impact your gut microbiome, and why cutting carbs might not be as harmless as it seems. You'll discover how low-carb eating can shift your gut bacteria, reduce fiber intake, and influence long-term health in ways that go far beyond the number on the scale. This episode isn't about hype—it's about physiology. From microbial diversity to inflammation and energy production, you'll learn what your body actually needs to thrive… and what might be missing when carbs are too low. LOW CARB DIET Vs. BLUE ZONE DIET
In this episode of The Other Side of Medicine, James D. Krystosik challenges one of today's most popular nutrition beliefs: that carbohydrates are the enemy. Drawing from decades of clinical experience and real-world observation, he breaks down why families have eaten whole-food carbohydrates—like bread, potatoes, rice, and fruit—for thousands of years without becoming overweight, inflamed, or chronically ill. You'll discover how modern low-carb thinking may be disrupting more than just your diet—it can disconnect you from tradition, family meals, and the enjoyment of real food. Dr. J also explores the powerful evidence from Blue Zones, where the longest-living populations thrive on diets rich in natural carbohydrates and remain lean, active, and disease-resistant. Most importantly, this episode reveals the real culprit behind today's health crisis: not carbs—but highly processed, refined versions stripped of fiber and nutrients. If you're over 40 and looking to restore energy, lose weight, and reclaim your health, this episode offers a refreshing, common-sense approach grounded in both science and tradition.

The Silent Killer of Your Health
In this episode of The Other Side of Medicine, Dr. Krystosik reveals one of the most overlooked threats to your health—and it's not your diet, toxins, or even stress. It's the constant stream of input your brain is exposed to from the moment you wake up. From news and notifications to daily pressures and uncertainty, this nonstop mental noise keeps your nervous system locked in a fight-or-flight state—draining your energy, clouding your thinking, disrupting your sleep, and accelerating the aging process. But the solution isn't complicated. Dr. Krystosik breaks down the powerful, science-backed role of silence as a natural reset for the brain and body. You'll learn how simple moments of intentional quiet—morning, midday, and night—can restore clarity, reduce stress hormones, improve focus, and support deep healing and recovery. This episode walks you through: Why constant input overloads your nervous system The connection between mental noise, fatigue, and poor health How silence lowers cortisol and improves emotional regulation A simple 3-part daily strategy to reset your brain How to improve sleep, recovery, and long-term health naturally If you're experiencing brain fog, fatigue, irritability, or poor sleep—even when everything "looks normal"—this episode may change how you think about your health. ARE YOU S.A.D? - Stop Blaming the Season!
If you're over 40 and feeling low on energy, unmotivated, or just not like yourself… you might be told it's Seasonal Affective Disorder—S.A.D. But what if that's only part of the story? In this episode, we uncover a deeper, often ignored connection: the link between S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and the Standard American Diet—S.A.D. Yes, the same foods many people rely on every day may be quietly driving inflammation, disrupting your gut microbiome, and altering brain chemistry in ways that directly impact your mood. After 40, your body becomes less forgiving. Nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar swings, and gut imbalance can amplify seasonal mood changes, making symptoms feel stronger and last longer. You'll discover how your gut and brain are intimately connected, why your diet may be worsening your emotional health, and what simple shifts can help restore balance naturally. This isn't just about surviving the seasons… it's about reclaiming your energy, clarity, and emotional resilience—starting from the inside out.

Reverse Aging with These Hacks | Dr. james Krystosik | The Other SIde of Medicine Podcast
In this episode of The Other Side of Medicine, Dr. James Krystosik explores two powerful scientific discoveries that could dramatically influence longevity and cardiovascular health. First, he reveals groundbreaking research on the gut microbiome, the trillions of microbes living inside your digestive system that scientists now believe may be one of the strongest regulators of how fast we age. Dr. Krystosik explains how people who live the longest often have unique gut bacteria that help reduce inflammation, support metabolic health, strengthen the immune system, and protect the body from age-related disease. He also discusses the concept of "inflammaging," the chronic low-grade inflammation that accelerates conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline—and how a healthy microbiome may help control it. You'll also learn the lifestyle habits researchers consistently see in long-living populations, including the role of high-fiber diets, fermented foods, regular movement, reduced medication use, and stress management in maintaining microbial diversity and supporting healthy aging. In the second part of the episode, Dr. Krystosik dives into new research on nattokinase, a natural enzyme derived from fermented soybeans that studies suggest may help reduce arterial plaque and support healthy blood flow. He compares this natural approach to commonly prescribed statin drugs and explains how nattokinase may influence blood clotting, triglycerides, and overall cardiovascular health. This episode connects the dots between gut health, inflammation, longevity, and heart health, revealing how lifestyle and natural strategies may support the body's ability to heal and protect itself over time.

Carbs Bad? Fat Good? Think Again You're being lied to about saturated fat
In this explosive episode of The Other Side of Medicine, Dr. James Krystosik pulls back the curtain on one of the most dangerous nutrition myths spreading across the internet today — that carbs are evil and saturated fat is your friend. Influencers chasing clicks are telling millions of people that bacon, butter, and fatty steaks are "health foods," while demonizing carbohydrates. But where's the science? While a handful of cherry-picked studies suggest saturated fat may be harmless, tens of thousands of peer-reviewed studies link high saturated fat intake to elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, arterial damage, heart attacks, and premature death. And now, even the revised food pyramid trends dangerously in that direction — contradicting decades of well-documented research proving that long-term excess saturated fat is a prescription for cardiovascular disaster. As I often say, research can be manipulated when the right price is paid. But truth leaves a trail of consistent evidence. In this episode, I challenge the viral narrative and separate hype from hard science. Not all carbs are created equal — there are "carbs from heaven" and "carbs from hell." But promoting saturated fat as a health food is a dangerous road. Your heart is too important to gamble on internet trends. Let's follow the science — not the influencers.

BLOOD TEST REVEALS 31 NUTRIENT LEVELS
Join Dr. Krystosik and his guest Dr. Jonathan Stein from Spectracell Lab as they discuss the micronutrient analysis blood test. This state of the art blood test reveals 31 nutrients essential for health and wellness. A recent study at the University of Texas found that 38% of people are deficient in one or more nutrients essential for the prevention and the restoration of health. Interestingly, 43% of people in this same study who were ingesting a multivitamin supplement were deficient in one or more micronutrients. Only 19% of people in this study had adequate levels of the daily requirements for the 31 nutrients tested in this study. That means that a whopping 80% of people in this study had inadequate levels of the 31 micronutrients tested. Unlike traditional serum tests that measure nutrient levels in the blood, the SpectraCell test analyzes micronutrients within your white blood cells. Serum testing gives a snapshot of the nutrient status at the time of the blood draw. The Spectracell test provides a longer-term view of your nutritional status (reflecting the past 4-6 months) and assesses how well your body utilizes these nutrients at a cellular level. The test evaluates the functional performance of 31 vitamins, minerals, amino/fatty acids, antioxidants, and metabolites. This helps identify functional deficiencies that may not be apparent from simple serum level measurements. The Spectracell test results can reveal hidden deficiencies or imbalances that may be contributing to various health issues. This information can be used to develop personalized nutrition plans, including dietary adjustments and targeted supplementation, to address specific needs.

Dr. Richard Kunin - Pioneer of Functional Medicine
Orthomolecular medicine is a science-based approach to health that emphasizes the use of optimal levels of vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients to prevent and treat disease. The term "orthomolecular" was coined by two-time Nobel laureate Dr. Linus Pauling, who defined it as "the right molecules in the right amounts" to maintain health. This approach operates on the principle that many chronic diseases stem from nutritional deficiencies, imbalances, or genetic predispositions that can be corrected or mitigated by adjusting dietary intake and supplementation. Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses on treating symptoms with pharmaceuticals, orthomolecular medicine seeks to restore biochemical balance at the cellular level. Key nutrients used in orthomolecular therapy include high doses of vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, essential fatty acids, amino acids, and minerals like magnesium and zinc. These nutrients support immune function, detoxification, neurotransmitter production, and cellular repair, which can be beneficial for conditions such as cardiovascular disease, mental health disorders, autoimmune diseases, and metabolic disorders. Critics argue that some high-dose nutrient therapies lack sufficient clinical trials, but a growing body of research supports the role of nutrition in disease prevention and management. Orthomolecular medicine aligns with functional medicine principles, emphasizing individualized treatment, lifestyle modifications, and evidence-based nutritional strategies for long-term health.

DIET WARS, FACTS, FICTIONS & LIES
Join Dr. Krystosik and his guest Dr. Joel Kahn M.D., as they debunk the low carb diet with scientific evidence. The belief that low-carb diets are universally healthy is misleading. Research shows that drastically reducing carbohydrates can lead to nutrient deficiencies, increased risk of heart disease, and other chronic conditions. Carbohydrates are essential for energy and overall health, and eliminating them can disrupt the body's balance. Long-term adherence to low-carb diets has been linked to higher mortality rates, making it crucial to approach such diets with caution and awareness of potential risks.
