Class #3 - recorded from our 10am Class in the gym (4.26.26)Here are the slides Jonathan used from this class: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SOmHOkLtD7u5DswELB4YWcnieBxxL1Vf?usp=drive_linkWe’ve all heard the old adage: “Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old, they will not depart from it.” It’s wisdom straight from the book of Proverbs. However, as we saw in our recent study through Proverbs, sayings such as this one are not hard and fast rules. They may be generally true but don’t promise a guaranteed outcome. And who’s to say that we’re even training up our children the right way?Parenting is not for the faint of heart. This class will focus on some of the specific challenges of trying to raise up godly, resilient children who don’t fall apart when life gets hard. There won’t be any easy answers offered, but you’ll be blessed to hear the collected wisdom of fellow parents and some practical ways to help your kids develop emotional strength, character, and responsibility. Whether you’re just starting out on the parenting journey or your kids are almost grown, we’d love to have you join us for the conversation.Thank you for listening! Judges: Returning to GodEpisode 11: Divine Power and Human Weakness (Judges 16)As the story of Samson comes to a tragic end, one great truth stands out: even when Samson betrays his Nazirite vow and squanders his divine gift, God is faithful to Samson. What a comfort to know that God can use the most flawed among his people in accomplishing his purposes.Thank you for listening! 163 - Judges E9
Judges: Returning to GodEpisode 9: “When the Weak Become Strong” (Judges 13)Unlike the other judges, we have the story of Samson’s birth. This is a story when God doesn’t raise up a leader who was already grown, but one given by in the womb, years in advance, to rescue His people. Samson was to be set apart for God’s use alone. Yet he will become the most flawed character in Judges and reflects the state of Israel as a whole. But God is still at work in Israel regardless of Samson.Thank you for listening! Judges: Returning to GodEpisode 8: “Jephthah’s Only Begotten” (Judges 11-12:1-7)The Lord’s call is always interesting. Jephthah, the outcast son of a prostitute, is called to deliver Israel from Ammonite oppression. As Israel continues her free fall into sin and idolatry, her oppression increases. Yet so does the cost of deliverance to the judge. Because of a rash vow, this deliverance costs Jephthah his only daughter as Israel is torn apart even more from within. But God is still at work.Thank you for listening! This podcast is a production of the Providence Road Church of Christ in Charlotte, NC. Music by Daniel Reed

Judges: Returning to GodEpisode 7: “When You Get What You Want” (Judges 9)Israel keeps falling further and further into rebellion and amnesia with God. God raises up Abimelech, not as a judge but as an “anti-judge” who would make himself king. The oppression of Israel doesn’t come from without but from within. This time, God’s judgment on Israel is to give them exactly what they want. In this story, we see the horror of God’s “yes.”Thank you for listening! Galatians: The Gospel = Jesus + NothingThe good news of Jesus was under attack in Galatia Some were perverting the gospel not by denying Jesus but by diminishing him. Paul tells these early Christians that all they need—and could ever need—is the good news of grace given to them through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Hebrews 11 is one of the most storied and studied chapters in Scripture. While it commends several biblical characters for their faith in God and calls them “a great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1), a majority are individuals with less than stellar track records. We meet men and women who did some exemplary things by faith, even if their lives, like ours, were inconsistent in other areas. They persevered in their faith through tough times of trials and testing, difficulties, and decision. Their stories still have much to teach us if we will learn.Thank you for listening! 126 - Exodus E10
The book of Exodus began with the people under the cloud of oppression. Chapter 40 closes with them sitting under the cloud of God’s glorious presence. How does the story of Exodus capture the whole story of the Bible? Who and what will stand in the way of God’s promises and faithfulness? How does this encourage you? What lessons have you learned from this study? In Exodus 40:34-38 we see the glory of God come down to dwell. But what does Paul say in Colossians 1:19, 2:9-10, and 1 Cor 3:16, and what does this mean for us as we walk the Christian life? What we have in Jesus is infinitely better than Israel and Moses, but Paul says it is still only a dim shadow of the reality to come (1 Cor 13:12). What promise do we find in Revelation 21:3-4 and what does it mean for both our worst days and even our best days now?Thank you for listening! 125 - Exodus E9
Scripture is full of warnings about idolatry. What is idolatry and why does God detest it (Exodus 20:1-8)? What is the attraction of idols? The Bible also makes it clear that idols are useless (Jeremiah 2:11; 16:20; 1 Samuel 12:21), but what is their danger (Psalm 115:8; Romans 1:21-13). Have you ever considered the demonic influence behind idols (Psalm 106:36-37; Deuteronomy 32:17; 1 Corinthians 10:20).History is often influenced by intercessory prayers. Read Isaiah 59:16; Ezekiel 22:30. How can we intercede and pray for our communities?Thank you for listening! This podcast is a production of the Providence Road Church of Christ in Charlotte, NC. “Consecrating the Priests: Clothes Make the Man”Of the priestly garments described in chapter 28, which one stands out to you the most and why?Aaron’s heart is mentioned three times in two verses (28:29-30). What does that suggest to us about the role of the high priest?Aaron is the first in a long line of high priests and pre-figures the high priesthood of Jesus. Read Hebrews 4:14-16; 7:23-28; 9:11-14; 10:19-22). In what ways is Jesus’ High Priesthood superior to those who came before him? And, what has Jesus accomplished and what does he do for us as our High PriestIn 1 Peter 2:9 Christians are called “a royal priesthood.” What does that suggest about our responsibilities as disciples?Thank you for listening! “A Sanctuary for God” (Exodus 25-27)What is the significance of the tabernacle for the divine presence (25:8)?When the ark was constructed, the tablets of the covenant law would be placed inside and on top of the ark there would be an atonement cover. What might be the significance of the atonement cover (also called the mercy seat) being situated over the tablets of the law?Discuss how each of these prefigures Jesus and the gospel:The table, on which was placed 12 loaves of bread (shewbread)The lampstand, which was the only light provided in the tabernacleThe tabernacle (John 1:14, the word translated “dwelled” is literally “pitched a tent” or “tabernacled”; see also Heb. 6:20; 9:11-12; 10:12)The altar of burnt offeringThe fundamental significance of the tabernacle was that it represented the presence of God among his people and made God more accessible to his people.
