How do your emotions affect your horse?

In this episode I go over checking emotions at the door for our horses in order to give them the consistency they need to thrive and build a happy and healthy relationship with their riders. Many people struggle with emotional regulation and allow their emotions to dictate their actions and horses suffer the consequences of our lack of accountability with our actions.

“First you go with the horse, then the horse goes with you, then you go together” Tom Dorrance

In this episode I talk about one of my absolute favorite horsemanship quotes by Tom Dorrance “First you go with the horse, then the horse goes with you, then you go together”. This quote is simple and poetic but has a much deeper meaning behind it. I go over how a relationship changes between you and your horse as you help them grow. From starting out as a guide, to becoming a leader then finally coming together as partners.

    Horses are Mirrors

In this episode I go over how much truly horses are a reflection of us, not just in our methods, but our energy, posture, mannerisms and everything in between.

  4. 3

    Immersive desensitization training.

It’s our jobs as trainers to present problems to horses in a controlled environment and have them solve those problems. But if you don’t teach your horse the steps on how to solve a problem you haven’t set your horse up for success.

    Americas Epidemic: Horsemanship Deficiency

70% of the horse industry is made up of trail riders, which I find awesome! Almost 3/4 of the industry is involved with horses solely because they LOVE horses! But even in today’s day and age with an information superhighway at our fingertips there is a true lack of true horsemanship. Horsemanship is so much more than meeting the basic needs of a horse and having a horse that doesn’t buck you off. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve spent in a saddle, if you never learned past the basics of turn, stop and go you haven’t advanced beyond a beginner (no matter how fast you can turn, stop and go either.) The most common problems hobbyist riders encounter are horses that won’t load, hard to catch, buddy sour, won’t stand tied, and won’t stand for a farrier. These are all green horse problems that should be over with by the time the horse has had 90 days training on them. So why are people having these problems with their 10+ year old horses?

Realistic expectations of adopting your first mustang.

Lots of people have a romanticized idea behind adopting a mustang not realizing how much time, commitment and effort it takes to adopt one. Many have a comparison in their mind to domestic horses and their behavior, but that’s like comparing a dog to a coyote. One may be weary of people but mustangs are TERRIFIED of people. This podcast is not to discourage anyone from adopting in the future, but to encourage those to go in with a realistic expectation so that they can have the most positive experience possible.

Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to adopting a BLM mustang from a holding facility.

Here’s my list of Do’s and Don’ts for adopting mustangs as a mustang adopter and former Wrangler for the Burns BLM wild horse corrals

Buddy sour horses and how to fix them.

Many people when it comes to buddy sour horses want to fix the behavioral problem of it by making the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard. Buddy sourness is so much more than a distraction issue.I say fix the “Why”. Why is my horse buddy sour? Because they lack confidence in themselves and lack confidence in you.

Is your horse a Rolls Royce Ride or a ‘81 Honda Beater with a heater?

Before you “HOW DARE YOU THIS IS A 81 HONDA” me with your horse listen to my thoughts on what happens when you are meticulous and nitpicky with your horses. It’s time to step up and be a parent and create civil members of society and stop letting your horses be menaces. Your horse only has “quirks” because you allow them too.

  10. -3

Desensitize = dull sensitivity = no response = dull horse.

Desensitize: having been made less sensitive. You never want to dull a horse’s sensitivity, you want to harness that sensitivity and change it from a reaction to a response. Train your horse think before they react. They stop, look to you for guidance and respond based off of the information you give them.

Horse/handler relationships. Dominance, control, respect VS leader, guidance, confidence.

In today’s day and age you really have to watch a lot of what you say. A sentence worded wrong can lose you clients as a trainer. “I require to be the dominant one with horses needing control and demanding respect” would loose you just about any client, but “I aspire to be a leader who horses look to for guidance and feel confident in” will fill your books. So let’s dive into the aspects of dominance, control and respect within the relationship of you and your horse and see what they mean.

90 day minimum Colt start policy.

Lots of people have been inquiring about 30-60 day starts for the 2024 season. I have a minimum 90 day policy when it comes to starting and riding colts and here I explain my policy and reasons why I came to it.

Being a trainer and utilizing the tool of social media.

Social media is a powerful free tool you can use to self promote.

Hard to Catch horses. How to fix it.

Here’s how to make even the hardest to catch horses into easy catching horses without even breaking a sweat

  16. -9

Adopting A BLM mustang how to determine temperament

This episode I go over how to determine a mustangs true temperament because the way mustangs behave in the chutes is not a true representation of that horses temperament

  17. -10

Are you JUST willing to learn? Or are you ACTUALLY teachable?

You’re reading the title thinking “of course I’m teachable!” But I would say 90% of the horse riders are not. Everyone says they are willing to learn, but they are NOT willing to be taught. They put their knowledge in a box limiting on how much they actually learn. This podcast is meant to help you self reflect, and in turn help you progress with your horses and increase your knowledge without bounds.

  18. -11

20% weight “rule” when riding horses

20% “rule” is not a golden rule to live life by. It’s a guideline for beginner riders that as you grow realize it’s not an actual rule. Here I dive into the key factors on why the 20% weight “rule” is not something to live by as it really depends on not only each individual horse but rider as well

  19. -12

    What changed with Halfdan?

In this episode I talk about how my husband struggles with our mustang with him being bracy, spooky and reactive with him and calm, soft and willing with me. What changed? Find out in this episode on why Halfdan flips a switch and turns into a completely different horse in less than a minute.

  20. -13

Living the cowboy life off the back of a horse. Am I lucky?

Many people have a glamorous picture in their head of the cowboy life due to TV shows. What tv doesn’t show you is actual cowboy life. We are not lucky to be where we are. We worked hard to be where we are.

  21. -14

Halter breaking is more than just the basics.

Halter breaking horses is more than just throwing a halter on and dragging a horse around. It is the ground you choose to build a foundation on for your horse. I’m this episode I talk on how I go about halter breaking my horses as well as what kind of mentality you need to have while halter breaking a horse.

  22. -15

Is your horse ready for an emergency evacuation?

Lots of people accept that their horses aren’t easy to catch or don’t load in a trailer easily. They label it as a “quirk”, but what happens in a emergency situation and these “quirks” mean life or death for your horse?

  23. -16

Anthropomorphism. Humanizing animals and why it’s a illogical argument.

Humanizing animals seems to be a growing trend among arguments in the horse industry. When it comes to preforming training methods or using training aids many people will disagree and argue “well why don’t you do that to yourself and see how it feels?”. In this episode I explain why this is a nonsense argument as well as give many different explanations on why this makes no sense.

  24. -17

Dealing with a spooky and reactive horse.

Here I talk about the importance of your horse not only having confidence in themselves and you. I also go over what I do to build a horses confidence in me abs how I present them to situations that would trigger that flight instinct.
