The Toothless Podcast

Belief does not subdue fact and some beliefs are worth understanding. || Not an expert, but damn curious! This podcast tackles questions on everything from religion and philosophy to history, science (and pseudo), even a whole lotta fiction, from the perspective of the permanent layman, Matt the Toothless Philosopher. I’ll be joined by my real life brother the one and only Mike the Mad Monk, potentially other guests, or just the voices in my head. Hope you enjoy!

    Fillings 2026-001

    Racism remains stupid. F Ice.

  2. 37

    Guard Rails 03

Elevating a Guard Rail to a Center Line (sure, that makes sense). Also, this literally consists of two recordings - I got interrupted during the first session and continued the following day. Today’s Guard Rail(s): “We’re All People” & “The Love of Money…” & “I Might Be Wrong”

  3. 36

    Guard Rails 02

People are where they are, but that doesn’t mean they’re correct. Also, inaction is an action. Trump and his administration are greedy and uncaring. I know, shocking. Hoarding wealth is nonsensical and cruel. They weren’t eating the pets, but old people could end up eating cat food if DOGE succeeds to kill Social Security. Amazon is run by brutally selfish people, but they’re cheap and available and I’m not rich so I’m as stuck as anyone else. Today’s Guard Rail(s): “What’s Your Metric?” & “We’re All People”

  4. 35

    Guard Rails 01

Ironically, this one sounds like I was bouncing off the rails… Tried some different editing settings to cut out random pauses - I sound insane. Apologies for the quickness of this one. Today’s talk includes how to be colorblind and drive, Trump is still trying to destroy this country, I’ve been working in technology forever, and I continue to discuss the idea of guard rails. Today’s Guard Rail(s): “Always Be Curious” & “Be Skeptical Not Contrarian” & “It’s Probably Not About You” & “People Are Where They Are”

    Route Canal 2025-001

This one... This one feels a little rougher around the edges than I would normally prefer to share, but I don't have a ton of interest in pretending like I don't say things that may or may not get me in trouble. This goes into topics about children and religion, and was recorded before the Guard Rails series begins and is an unintentional precursor. I won't be pushing this one out via Substack, because I don't want to force this on everybody. I still accept feedback, but know this one is more anger than sense.

  6. 33

    Guard Rails 00 | Introduction

Starting to try to flesh out more of my personal philosophy. It's not perfect, but this is what happens you try to think and communicate while also driving. I mean no harm or disrespect, but please tell me if you feel otherwise so I can make corrections or clarifications.  Today's Guard Rail :: "Consent In All Things"

  7. 32

    Fillings 2025-004

A continuation of thoughts from the previous episode. The brain. The conscious. The unconscious. What makes us... us?

  8. 31

    Fillings 2025-003

Sorry for the gap. Today's discussion is largely about the brain and about identity. What makes us who we are? Are we always responsible for all our actions? Do I answer these questions?

  9. 30

    Fillings 2025-002

Getting back on track. Spent a week in the hospital. Trump's back in office. All in all, 2025 sucks. Trying to figure out where I need to fit into that for myself and for any of you coming along for the ride.

  10. 29

    Fillings 2025-001

Happy New Year! Yes, new titling. Just me trying to get back into action.

  11. 28

    Fillings 16

Be grateful to your circle, whatever size, whatever shape. If you have the strength of will, push those boundaries, but never forget not everyone can do what you do or sustain what you've sustained. Be compassionate to one another.

  12. 27

    Fillings 15

Murder! Who deserves to die in our society? This is a shorter discussion that that specific topic is worth. Also, sorry for any sound quality issues. It's been a day.

  13. 26

    Fillings 14

Faith, or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Hope, but also, not really. I talk about other stuff, too. Naturally. This feels like me trying to work something out but I hope there's some useful things in it.

  14. 25

    Fillings 13

Labels. Some other stuff, too. I feel like there's more here but I'll get to it, probably in a blog post. Check out Naming Conventions

  15. 24

    Route Canal 05

Sorry about some of the audio quality... This one isn't as rage-filled as the other one, but it feels a little meandering to me. Got inspired while trying to sleep and had to deal with it. Few points of clarification: Gandhi did do the thing I said with his grand-niece which makes it weirder, but he was actually firmly anti-racist as he got older. The cross was likely a T but could have been an X - both letters were used. Margaret Sanger was NOT explicit a racist but she did operate in a time where things like eugenics and racism were pretty prevalent. She did her best to distance herself from eugenics and perhaps some effort to do so with racism, too. History is fascinating!

  16. 23

    Route Canal 04

TRIGGER WARNING: I talk about some horrible things related to Israel/Palestine, domestic assault, race relations in the US, and trans people existing (which they do and should). It's really just me hating on hate. It's mostly me ranting, so if you're after something constructive, feel free to skip it. Also, the phrase I couldn't think of was "Delayed Gratification."

  17. 22

    Fillings 12

Early morning diatribe. Trying to keep the faith. Trying to clarify some random thoughts. Hoping to be some level of inspirational without pushing my luck too much.

  18. 21

    Fillings 11

A calmer reaction to the impending demise of the US democracy. Never forget why you fight. Never doubt that while we lost, we were not wrong.

  19. 20

    Fillings 10

My semi-initial reaction to the murdering of democracy.

  20. 19

    Fillings 09

Trump's Bund Rally at MSG. White Christian Nationalism on the rise. Hinchcliffe is a roast comic, so not a good choice... Alina Habba is her name. I apologize for saying it WAY wrong.

  21. 18

    Flosser 03 | The Autumn

The Autumn By Elizabeth Barrett Browning. A reading.

  22. 17

    Fillings 08

What? More politics? Trump likes Hitler? JD Vance is a tool? The Democratic ticket is uninteresting? Israel and genocide? All new stuff from yours truly...

  23. 16

    Flosser 02

Shtubnap. Learn about it. Love it.

  24. 15

    Route Canal 03

Technology is scary. Freeze your credit. Brush your damn teeth.

  25. 14

    Fillings 07

    Rage. Insomnia. Shoveling.

  26. 13

Toothless & The Mad Monk 02

Sort of general catchup. Politics. Israel. Modern Nazis. OG Nazis. Our usual type of conversation.

  27. 12

    Flosser 01

These are supposed to be me in a happy mood. I think today counts.

  28. 11

    Route Canal 02

I go all-in on why I dislike Trump, among other things. Trigger warning at the beginning. Watch the Blog for informative links related to today's episode.

  29. 10

Holiday Special | Columbus Day Sucks

It really does. Pick a different Italian to look up to.

  30. 9

    Fillings 06

Coming Out! No, not that way, just spreading the podcast to more people. Trying to make it a thing. Kind of. Also, the bridge construction has shifted and I don't think people know how to read.

  31. 8

    Fillings 05

Mea culpa, clarifications, attempts to explain myself a little further on some recent claims and statements. Also, be careful who you look up to.

  32. 7

    Fillings 04

I got stuck behind a bus and decided it was a good time to complain about education and some of the classism involved in education. Probably lacking in details but I was on a tear.

  33. 6

    Route Canal 01

Longer form of the fillings, but still unscripted rambling with no opportunity for fact-checking. Today's session is largely about my recent discovery of Jessie Gender and marginalized groups, specifically the trans community. Not a complete discussion, but it does a reasonable job I think.

  34. 5

    Fillings 03

This is a mental health check-in basically.

  35. 4

Toothless & The Mad Monk 01

RECORDED 2024 April. If I had to sum up how these shows are going to go, it'd probably be something like Uneducated Ramblings. We talk about politics and race relations and drug companies among other things. What I think is important about this to remember is we definitely mean well and we may say things incorrectly or are not forming complete thoughts, but we're not experts and what we want to is to better understand why things are so... messed up for so many people.

  36. 3

    Fillings 02

Just a mental health update. Mostly.

  37. 2

    Fillings 01

Random ramblings while driving. Where I've been, some politics, how comedy connects to that... I guess... Anyway, just dipping my toes back into the mess.

  38. 1

    Happy Tolkien Reading Day!

Tolkien Reading Day is held on the 25th of March each year. The date of the 25th of March was chosen as the date on which the Ring was destroyed, completing Frodo’s quest and vanquishing Sauron.

Determined 01 | The Toothless Philosopher

This is me discussing why I'm interested in free will. I intended it to be primarily Robert Sapolsky's book "Determined", but I had to wrap in Sam Harris' book "Free Will". This will be part of an ongoing review of - probably - both books. Hope you enjoy.
