    Radar: Genre is Death

Today on Radar - I recently spoke with Genre is Death, an uncompromising noise duo made up of Ty Varesi (guitar, vox) and Tayler Lee (bass, vox). They moved to NYC in 2023 looking for something beyond what small town Georgia had to offer. They hit the ground running. A chance encounter with 80s underground stalwarts Live Skull pulled them into the city's noise scene and into orbit with Lydia Lunch and The Art Gray Noizz Quintet. In 2025 they toured with Gogol Bordello and shared stages with Bush Tetras and Jon Spencer. Their debut LP Attractive People is out this Friday on In the Red Records, recorded by Martin Bisi at BC Studio in Gowanus. We spoke about their beginnings, journey to New York and the making of Attractive People, Tune in. ICYDNK: Dylan Hundley is an artist and performer. Radar: Midge Ure - Ultravox

Midge Ure is one of the architects of the sound that defined a generation. As the frontman and creative co-architect of Ultravox, co-writer of "Do They Know It's Christmas?", and the producer behind some of the most enduring records of the new wave era -- including "Fade to Grey" and "Vienna" -- he shaped synth-pop and post-punk at the moment both genres were finding their footing. His fingerprints are all over many eras. On this episode of Radar, Midge joins us to talk about five decades of making music, and his first new album in twelve years. A Man of Two Worlds is out May 8 on Chrysalis -- sixteen tracks split across two distinct worlds, instrumental and vocal, from one of the most quietly influential figures in modern British music. Ure will tour the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand with North American Dates kicking off on May 8th in Bath. More information can found at www.midgeure.co.uk Tune in. With the Cadillacs he won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Performance for Fabulosos Calavera in 1998 — the first time an Argentine band received a Grammy. Radar: Godlis

I recently spoke with Godlis — the photographer whose images defined CBGB’s, the Bowery, and downtown New York in the ’70s punk scene. His iconic photographs of the Ramones, Patti Smith, Television, Blondie, Talking Heads, Richard Hell, and many more offered a window into that world that stays with us today. It’s an astonishing record. We talk about his college years in Boston and when he first picked up a camera. Having that first camera (a Leica) robbed, making his way back to New York, fully realizing his desire to be a defining street photographer, and how he discovered CBGB’s, plus much more. His books include History Is Made at Night, Godlis Miami, and Godlis Streets, each capturing a different part of the worlds he’s been documenting for decades. All wonderful documents of one of the greatest street photographers of all time. ICYDNK: Dylan Hundley is an artist and performer. Radar: Tytti Roto - Modem

I recently caught up with Tytti Roto, who’s been a big part of the Helsinki underground for years — you might know her from Rosettes, Modem, Plastic Tones, or Ty Roxy. I met Tytti back in September when we played the same Synthicide night, and I was completely blown away by her and her band Modem. They’re a synth-pop duo she started with Ville Valavuo in 2020, drawing on their shared love of the electronic sounds of the ’80s. When we talked, Tytti was in the studio working on the new Plastic Tones record — her first band — while Modem had just dropped their second full-length, Interface. And knowing her, I’m sure something’s cooking for Ty Roxy too. Go check it all out: Modem via Don Giovanni Records Ty Roxy via Fonal Records All things Tytti on Instagram @rotoxy ICYDNK: I’m Dylan Hundley — artist, performer, co-creator and singer of Lulu Lewis, and all things Darling Black. Radar: Lene Lovich

Lene Lovich is an American-born, British-based new wave artist whose wild originality helped define the late-’70s post-punk sound. After moving from Detroit to London, she immersed herself in the art scene, writing lyrics for Cerrone’s “Supernature” before breaking out with her 1978 debut Stateless. Its single “Lucky Number” became an instant classic—off-kilter, infectious, and unlike anything else on the radio—introducing her playful, theatrical voice and bold visual style to the world. Through her releases on Stiff Records and beyond, Lovich fused punk urgency with pop hooks and art-rock experimentation. Her look and sound—braided hair, angular rhythms, bursts of yelps and whispers—pushed the boundaries of what pop could be. After stepping back in the ’80s to raise a family, she returned with Shadows and Dust in 2005 and still performs today, an enduring symbol of creative freedom and eccentric brilliance. We spoke about all these things in the midst of her current travels with The B-52’s and Devo here in the US, her first full US tour in 35 years. ICYDK: Dylan Hundley is an artist & performer. She is the co-creator and lead singer of Lulu Lewis & the creator of all things at Darling Black. She co-curates & hosts Salon Lulu, which is a New York-based multidisciplinary performance series. Radar: Crispian Mills - Kula Shaker

I recently spoke with Crispian Mills of Kula Shaker. Raised in a film family (his mother is Hayley Mills), Crispian grew up on music and cinema where he has spent his life as an artist & filmaker. He formed Kula Shaker in 1996; the debut, K, became one of the UK’s fastest-selling debuts of the ’90s. The band's sound mixes 60s psychedelia with elements of Indian music. The name, suggested by Mills after his first trip to India, was created in honour of one of the twelve Alvars (saints of south India), the ninth-century Indian emperor and holy man, King Kulashekhara. In Indian culture, the name Kulashekhara is thought to be lucky or auspicious. Indeed it has been bolstered by hard work and respect for craft. We talked about his early years, time in India, the perils of early success, spirituality, and why making art is a timeless human endeavor. Kula Shaker’s latest and upcoming releases include the single “Good Money” (September 2025) and the album Wormslayer (due January 30, 2026), described by the band as a “kaleidoscopic storm of psychedelia, celestial harmonies, and cinematic scope.” They’re mid-tour with The Dandy Warhols now; the final U.S. date is in San Francisco tonight before they head back to the UK into early 2026. ICYDK: Dylan Hundley is an artist & performer. She is the co-creator and lead singer of Lulu Lewis & the creator of all things at Darling Black. She co-curates & hosts Salon Lulu, which is a New York-based multidisciplinary performance series. She is also a cast member of the classic New York film Metropolitan.

She’s made music with Dorothy and The Hangovers, directed videos for New Order and The Libertines, and built an amazing visual art practice consisting of video work and painting.  Her piece “3 Minute Scream” was part of the Tate Britain's "Women in Revolt!" exhibition in 2024 and her work has been in shown in galleries worldwide.. You all may know him more from his incredible work as a filmmaker with his family, Adams Family Films. Radar: Anika

I recently spoke with Berlin based artist Annika Henderson about her wonderful new album Abyss, her early years in Bristol, a little bit about Tricky and her process.    From the Press Release: British-born, Berlin-based musician Annika Henderson, better known as Anika, has created her new, third album Abyss out of the frustration, anger, and confusion she feels from existing in our contemporary world. Notably heavier than her previous releases, the 10-track Abyss feels raw, urgent, and fuelled by strong emotions.   “There’s so much going on in the world, and you have to sit there and watch it through a screen that you’ve allowed into your home, like a vampire who had been preying at your door, then immediately digest it, have an opinion, and publicly comment on it,” Anika says. “The state of the world just feels like an abyss right now.” With this new album, she wants to create a place where people can feel safe to be themselves, and to unite in their diversity. “Abyss is like a call to action,” she says. “To come and figure it out together.”   Abyss was recorded live to tape at the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin (where the likes of Depeche Mode and David Bowie also recorded) in just a few days. Recording live and with minimal overdubs was an important decision, Anika stresses, in order to capture the raw immediacy of the album. As before, she wrote the songs herself, before fleshing them out with Martin Thulin of Exploded View, and then assembled a live band to join the pair in the studio – comprising of Andrea Belfi on drums, Tomas Nochteff on bass (Mueran Humanos) and Lawrence Goodwin (The Pleasure Majenta) on guitar, with studio engineering done by Nanni Johansson and Frida Claeson Johansson. “I always work with people I respect and admire,” Anika says. “It’s very genuine in that way.”   You can find Anika’s Abyss on all streaming platforms and on vinyl via Sacred Bones and at anika-music.com where you can also find all her live dates this year across Europe and later in the year in the US.   Dylan Hundley is an artist & performer. Radar: Jeff Bridges

Slow Magic, 1977-1978, is a collection of never-before-heard songs that Jeff Bridges wrote and recorded with a band of his oldest and closest friends. Culled from a single decaying cassette tape labeled “July 1978,” these recordings are a window into the musical life of one of our greatest living actors who holds music as dear as all the art forms he participates in. The raw & organic tone of these recordings evokes the breeze and spirit of 1970’s Venice & Malibu beach where they were recorded. I talked with Jeff about these sessions, his process as an artist and how the multitude of mediums he participates in all blend together. Slow Magic is out on Record Store day on April 12th. You can go to jeffbridges.com to check out all of Jeff’s work including his amazing photography, drawings and the fascinating Life is but a Dream series.   Dylan Hundley is an artist & performer. Radar: Vox (fka Mark Burgess) of The Chameleons

Post-punk legends THE CHAMELEONS are gearing up for a brand new full-length album due later this year (their first full-length in over 20 years!), they've released two new EPs Where Are You? and Tomorrow Remember Yesterday - the former consisting of new material and the latter of archival material recorded with the current lineup.   Their latest five song EP Tomorrow Remember Yesterday is a collection of newly recorded songs whose origins harken back decades. Says Vox: "These songs were amongst the very earliest songs we got together pre-Peel session in 1981, but were discarded at the time due to them feeling unfinished.” I sat down with Vocalist/bassist Vox (fka Mark Burgess) for this episode and it was quite a ride! We talked about Peel Sessions, Spotting his favorite Dr. Who on the stairs at the BBC, Steve Lillywhite, Linn Drums, Ayahuasca, Therapy, Love & The Psychedelic Furs.  Dylan Hundley is an artist & performer. Radar: Studio Electrophonique

I spoke with author & filmmaker Jamie Taylor about his new book Studio Electrophonique, which  is the amazing story of the home studio in Sheffield that helped launch some of Britain's most beloved bands.   Sheffield mechanic Ken Patten’s makeshift home studio became the launch pad for a group of young musicians who would shape the futuristic sound of 1980s pop. The Human League, Heaven 17, Pulp, ABC and others made their early recordings with Ken, whose DIY ethic was the perfect fit for a city facing industrial decline but teeming with ideas. Jamie tells his story vividly & beautifully. It’s a real love letter to Sheffield and the era.   Studio Electrophonique arrives in April via the Manchester University Press. I encourage you to visit their site. If you are US based you’ll have to visit an online retailer to find it.    Dylan Hundley is an artist & performer. Radar: Hellbender Vinyl

When two artists, a label manager and a PhD in chemical engineering (who is also one of the artists) start a vinyl pressing plant in Pittsburg and call it Hellbender, it’s pretty cool.   On this episode of Radar I sat down with Pittsburgh native Jeff Betten (Misra Records) and musician/entrepreneur Matt Dowling (SWOLL, bassist of Burial Waves) who recently opened up a new vinyl plant in Pittsburgh, PA. They both have interesting backgrounds in music, business and science which are uncommon combinations.   They are keeping things artist friendly at Hellbender by pressing smaller quantities of records and engaging the community by hosting events such as live shows, listening parties, film screenings and more at the plant.    For more information go to hellbendervinyl.com where you find out more about pressing with them and upcoming events.   Dylan Hundley is an artist & performer. Radar: Cynthia Sley / Bush Tetras

I recently spoke with Cynthia Sley, the iconic frontwoman of Bush Tetras, the legendary NYC art-punk band that helped define the downtown underground scene of the late ’70s and early ’80s. Cynthia’s distinct image and half-spoken, sharp delivery have undeniably influenced current artists like Florence Shaw of Dry Cleaning. The band’s overall sound—blending funk, punk, and No Wave with elements of dub and groove—has echoed through every era of post & art-punk revival. Bush Tetras blazed the trail with this sound that can still be heard today. Cynthia and I discussed her journey from Ohio to New York, the electric energy of the late-’70s East Village, where art thrived with no limits, and the evolution of Bush Tetras up to today.  For more information, upcoming show dates (when announced), and vinyl, visit Wharf Cat Records.  Dylan Hundley is an artist & performer. Radar: Marshall Allen / The Sun Ra Arkestra

He is a multi-instrumentalist and the most revered & distinctive free jazz,  avant-garde alto saxophone player. He also performs on flute, oboe, piccolo, and the EVI. Marshall is best known for his work with Sun Ra, having recorded and performed mostly in this context since the late 1950s, and having led The Sun Ra Arkestra since 1995. He talked about performing for Eisenhower in World War II, his meeting with Sun Ra that resulted in him devoting his life to this work with Sun Ra’s music plus his philosophies and what Marshall attributes his longevity to. You can find the Arkestras most recent release, Lights on a Satellite. wherever and however you find your music. You can find Marshall’s new release, New Dawn, in all the same places. Radar: Ryan Lee Crosby

I sat down recently my friend Ryan Lee Crosby who is a Rhode Island based musician, songwriter, producer and teacher most known for his uncanny ability to channel 1930's Mississippi blues as if he arrived to us through a portal. He combines Hill Country and Bentonia style blues with sounds from India and Africa and as such, is expanding the tradition. He is an incredible musician, deeply spiritual human and a good friend. Ryan and I first met in 2024 while participating together in preview shows for the Meadlowlark Festival including a deeply memorable evening at the hallowed ground of the Levon Helm Studios. We have been friends since meeting and have performed together a few times. “Of all the world’s musical traditions, the one that speaks to me most directly is the Bentonia style of Delta blues. Something I love about the blues is its timeless ability to express the entire range of the human experience: its brightest joys, deepest sorrows and everything in between. By listening to the blues, we can learn how to have compassion for ourselves and others. Its lessons are endless.”  Our discussion managed to encapsulate a wide range of the human experience. This is what time with Ryan will produce for anyone who sits to talk with him, spend time with albums or attend a show.  Dylan Hundley is an artist & performer. Radar: Oliver Ackermann - A Place to Bury Strangers

On this episode of Radar I spoke with Oliver Ackermann who is the founder & creator of the Brooklyn-based effects pedal company Death By Audio and is guitarist and lead singer of New York based punk, noise, shoe-gaze band A Place to Bury Strangers.   They have released seven LP’s, fourteen EP's, a live album and more singles than I can count. They are prolific and committed to the cause. Their most recent is called Synthesizer (Ded Strange). It is a wonderful record that also comes in a limited edition series of LPs where the album cover itself doubles as a circuit board and functional synth for curious and enterprising fans. “It’s pretty messed up & chaotic. But it feels really human,” says Oliver. "In an era of making music where so little is DIY and so much is left up to AI, never setting foot in a practice room or a home studio, making something that feels deliberately chaotic, messy, and human, is entirely the point." I had a wonderful time talking about the record with Oliver along with his approach to live shows, his love of art, community and mixtapes.
