The Word Became Fresh

The WORD Became FRESH is the Bible teaching ministry of Sebastian Petz, the Pastor of the WORD Church LA. In so doing, we are making expository preaching cool again!

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time in John 11:1–16, we were introduced to a moment that immediately challenges our expectations.Jesus receives word that Lazarus is sick—someone He loves deeply. And yet, instead of going immediately, He delays. Not because He is indifferent. Not because He is unaware. But because He is intentional. In this episode, we take a closer look at what that delay reveals—how Jesus reframes the situation for His disciples, and how what appears to be suffering and death is actually being used for a greater purpose.Because in the hands of Christ, even death itself becomes a stage for the glory of God.

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time in John 10:31–42, we saw that Jesus’ works testify clearly to who He is—the Son of God sent by the Father—and that the issue is never a lack of evidence, but a refusal to believe. Now as we move into John 11, we enter one of the most powerful and personal moments in the Gospel.Jesus receives word that Lazarus—someone He loves—is sick. The expectation is immediate action.Urgency.Intervention.But instead...Jesus delays. In this episode, we begin to see that what appears to be delay is actually divine design—setting the stage for a greater revelation of His glory.

  5. 99

Episode 99: Actions Speak Louder than Words Part 2 (John 10:31-42)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time in John 10:31–42, we saw the explosive response to Jesus’ claim that He and the Father are one. The crowd picked up stones—not because they misunderstood Him—but because they understood Him all too well.In this episode, we’ll take a closer look at how Jesus responds to their accusations. Rather than backing down, He points to His works as undeniable testimony to His identity—and calls His hearers to believe what has been clearly revealed.

  6. 98

Episode 98: Actions Speak Louder than Words Part 1 (John 10:31-42)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time in John 10:22–30, Jesus gave one of the most powerful assurances in all of Scripture—that His sheep hear His voice, follow Him, and are held securely in His hand forever. But that promise does not land softly. In John 10:31-42, the response is immediate and explosive. The crowd picks up stones to kill Him.Why? Because Jesus has just made a claim that cannot be ignored—that He and the Father are one.In this episode, we begin to see how people respond when the identity of Jesus is made unmistakably clear.

  7. 97

Episode 97: The Shepherd and His Sheep Part 7 (John 10:22-30)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time in John 10:22–30, Jesus gave one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture. He described His people as sheep who hear His voice, follow Him, and receive from Him the gift of eternal life. And He assured them that they will never perish—because they are held securely in His hand and in the hand of the Father. In this episode, we’ll take a closer look at that promise and what it means to belong to the Shepherd who keeps His sheep forever.

  8. 96

Episode 96: The Shepherd and His Sheep Part 6 (John 10:22-30)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In our last episode, Jesus confronted the unbelief of the religious leaders during the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem. They demanded that He tell them plainly if He was the Christ. But Jesus made clear that the problem was not a lack of clarity—it was a lack of faith. In John 10:22–30, Jesus now brings His response to its powerful conclusion. He contrasts those who reject Him with those who truly belong to Him. His sheep hear His voice. They follow Him. And He gives them something no one else can give—eternal life. And then Jesus makes one of the most remarkable declarations in the entire Gospel of John: His sheep are secure forever, held safely in His hand and in the hand of the Father. This passage not only reveals the identity of the Good Shepherd—it also offers one of the clearest pictures of the believer’s eternal security in all of Scripture. The question is not simply whether we understand these words. The question is whether we are truly listening to the voice of the Shepherd.

  9. 95

Episode 95: The Shepherd and His Sheep Part 5 (John 10:22–30)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time, Jesus declared Himself the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep. Now in John 10:22–30, the setting shifts to Jerusalem during the Feast of Dedication, and the tension rises. The leaders demand clarity: "If you are the Christ, tell us plainly."But Jesus makes clear the issue isn’t lack of information—it’s lack of belief. He speaks of His sheep hearing His voice, receiving eternal life, and being held securely in His hand. The question becomes personal: Do you belong to the Shepherd?

  10. 94

Episode 94: The Shepherd and His Sheep Part 4 (John 10:11–21)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time in John 10, Jesus revealed Himself as the Good Shepherd—the One who does not flee when danger comes, but lays down His life for the sheep. We saw that His care is not sentimental or symbolic, but sacrificial. But Jesus is not finished explaining what that means. In the second half of John 10:11–21, He presses the image even deeper—unfolding the purpose behind His death, the scope of His mission, and the authority under which He acts.He speaks of other sheep not yet gathered.Of one flock under one Shepherd. And of a love so strong that it moves Him freely toward the cross. And as He does, the division among His hearers sharpens. Some recognize the voice of the Shepherd.Others harden themselves against it.Because the words of Jesus never leave people neutral. They either draw us into life,or expose hearts that refuse Him.

  11. 93

Episode 93: The Shepherd and His Sheep Part 3 (John 10:11–21)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time in John 10, Jesus revealed that He is the gate—the only entrance into safety, belonging, and abundant life. But now, beginning in verse 11, Jesus deepens the image even further. He does not merely protect the sheep from danger. He does not simply provide access to life.He tells us how that life is secured.By laying down His own.As the conflict with Israel’s leaders intensifies, Jesus makes an unmistakable claim—one that exposes false shepherds, redefines leadership, and points directly toward the cross. He is not a hired hand who flees when danger comes. He is the Good Shepherd who gives His life for the sheep.

  12. 92

Episode 92: The Shepherd and His Sheep Part 2 (John 10:1–10)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time in John 10, Jesus introduced the image of the shepherd and the sheep. He exposed false leaders who enter the sheepfold by deception, and He declared that His sheep recognize His voice and follow Him alone. But Jesus isn’t finished explaining the image. In today’s passage, He presses the metaphor even further—revealing not only how His sheep are led, but how they are protected, nourished, and given life.As the tension with Israel’s leaders continues to rise, Jesus makes one of His clearest claims yet:He is not merely a guide for the sheep—He is the gate through which life itself is found.

  13. 91

Episode 91: The Shepherd and His Sheep Part 1 (John 10:1–10)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time in John 9, Jesus exposed the paradox of belief. The man born blind came to see—because he knew he was blind. But the Pharisees, confident in their spiritual sight, remained in darkness. As that chapter closed, the conflict was unresolved. The healed man had been cast out.The religious leaders stood condemned. And Jesus had drawn a clear line between true sight and self-deception.Now in John 10, Jesus does not change the subject. He deepens it.Using the familiar imagery of sheep and shepherds, Jesus confronts Israel’s leaders directly—exposing false shepherds who exploit the flock, and revealing Himself as the only true source of life and protection.Today in verses 1 through 10, we’ll begin by hearing Jesus draw a sharp contrast:Between the true shepherd and the thieves, between the voice of Christ and the deception of strangers, and between those who give life—and those who take it.

  14. 90

Episode 90: The Paradox of Belief: Blindness Exposed Part 2 (John 9:35–41)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time, we watched Jesus seek out the man who had been cast out by the Pharisees—rejected by the religious system, yet pursued by Christ. In a quiet encounter, physical healing gave way to spiritual sight. The man believed. And for the first time, he truly saw.But Jesus’ words about sight and blindness were not meant to stay private.Today, they expose something far more unsettling:The difference between those who know they are blind—and those who insist they can see.And that difference makes all the difference.

  15. 89

Episode 89: The Paradox of Belief: Not Seeing is Seeing Part 1 (John 9:35:41)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time, the confrontation ended with rejection. The healed man was cast out by the Pharisees—cut off from the synagogue, dismissed by the religious elite, and left on the outside. But what happens next is one of the most tender and revealing moments in the Gospel of John.Jesus hears that the man has been thrown out.And instead of moving on, instead of letting the system have the final word, Jesus goes looking for him.In today’s passage, the Light of the world meets a man who has lost everything—but gained sight. And in a quiet, personal encounter, Jesus presses the question that stands at the center of every life:"Do you believe in the Son of Man?"This is not just the end of a miracle story. It is the beginning of a confession.

  16. 88

Episode 88: The Christian’s Confession: "I Was Blind, but Now I See" Part 2 (John 9:13–34)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time, we watched a healed man stand before the Pharisees with nothing but honesty and courage, while the religious leaders spiraled deeper into unbelief.Today, that confrontation reaches its climax.Pressed with questions, threatened with consequences, and surrounded by men who claim to know the law better than anyone alive, this formerly blind man refuses to back down. With every answer he gives, his physical sight becomes a doorway to spiritual sight... and the truth grows clearer than ever: Jesus is no ordinary man.By the end of the encounter, the Pharisees rage, the man is cast out, and the dividing line between spiritual blindness and spiritual sight stands in full view.

  17. 87

Episode 87: The Christian’s Confession: "I Was Blind, but Now I See" Part 1 (John 9:13–34)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last week, we saw Jesus give sight to a man who had never seen a single moment of his life — a miracle that revealed both the compassion and the creative power of the Son of God.Today, that miracle sets the stage for something just as revealing. As the healed man is brought before the Pharisees, confusion spreads, controversy erupts, and competing interpretations collide. The religious leaders cannot deny the transformation, but they also refuse to accept the One who performed it.His parents shrink back in fear...The Pharisees cling to their systems...But the man himself? He simply tells the truth. In this first part of the confrontation, we watch a remarkable contrast unfold:A man with brand-new physical sight begins taking his first steps into spiritual sight...While those who claim to see remain trapped in the deep darkness of unbelief.

  18. 86

Episode 86: Seeing is Believing, Believing is Seeing Part 2 (John 9:1–12)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Last time, Jesus declared that the man’s lifelong blindness was not the result of personal sin, but the staging ground for the works of God.And today, in Part 2, we witness those works unfold. With deliberate compassion, Jesus kneels down, makes clay with His own hands, anoints the man’s eyes, and sends him to wash in the pool of Siloam. It’s a miracle wrapped in symbol: the Creator using the dust He formed humanity from, the Messiah sending a blind man on a journey of obedience, and the Light of the world breaking into a life that had only ever known darkness. This is not just a healing—it is a revelation of the One who gives sight to the blind and faith to the willing. And through this sign, Jesus begins to expose the deeper spiritual blindness that surrounds the miracle itself.

  19. 85

Episode 85: Seeing is Believing, Believing is Seeing Part 1 (John 9:1–12)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.Today we enter John 9 and the remarkable story where Jesus meets a man who has been blind from birth. The disciples see a theological puzzle—"Who sinned, this man or his parents?"But Jesus reframes the entire moment:"It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him."In one sentence, Jesus teaches us that suffering is not always judgment—it is often the canvas on which God intends to display His glory. And with divine compassion, He moves toward the man, preparing to open not just physical eyes, but spiritual ones.Today in Part 1, we look at the purpose behind this man’s suffering, and the hope we have in a Savior who never wastes pain.

  20. 84

Episode 84: "I Am Greater than Abraham" Part 2 (John 8:48–59)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, Jesus’ confrontation with the religious leaders reaches its breathtaking climax. They demand, "Who do You make Yourself out to be?" — and Jesus answers with a declaration that shakes the very ground of history. He reminds them that Abraham rejoiced to see His day — that before Abraham ever existed, He was.And then, with divine finality, Jesus says the words that reveal His eternal identity:"Before Abraham was, I Am."In that moment, there is no ambiguity left — the carpenter from Nazareth claims the very name of God.The One who spoke to Moses from the burning bush now stands in the temple courts, wrapped in human flesh, declaring Himself the eternal I Am.And faced with such glory, His enemies can only reach for stones.

  21. 83

Episode 83: "I Am Greater than Abraham" Part 1 (John 8:48–59)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, Jesus’ confrontation with the religious leaders reaches its breaking point. They lash out with insults, calling Him a Samaritan and accusing Him of being demon-possessed.But Jesus doesn’t trade insult for insult — He speaks truth with unshakable calm: "I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me."Here, the issue isn’t mere misunderstanding — it’s spiritual blindness. They claim to know God, yet reject the One who reveals Him.And then Jesus makes a staggering promise: "If anyone keeps My word, he will never see death."Once again, the words of eternal life collide with hearts closed by pride.

  22. 82

Episode 82: Like Father, Like Son Part 6 (John 8:39–47)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, Jesus exposes the spiritual heart of His opponents. They boast in Abraham, but their actions betray another lineage. He says, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came from God."Instead, their rejection reveals their true allegiance — "You are of your father the devil."Here, Jesus unmasks the source of unbelief. Those who refuse truth show they belong to the lie.And the mark of a true child of God is unmistakable: a heart that loves Christ and listens to His Word.

  23. 81

Episode 81: Like Father, Like Son Part 5 (John 8:39–47)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, Jesus continues His conversation with those who claim to believe in Him — but whose hearts reveal otherwise. They insist, "Abraham is our father."But Jesus replies, "If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did." (John 8:39)Their confidence in heritage masks a crisis of the heart.Abraham welcomed the truth; they’re trying to kill the One who speaks it.Then Jesus exposes the real issue — their spiritual lineage. He says, "You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires." (John 8:44)This is one of the sharpest moments in John’s Gospel.Jesus draws a line no one can blur — you either belong to the truth or to the lie.And the defining mark of a true child of God is simple: you hear His Word and love His voice.

  24. 80

Episode 80: Can You Handle the Truth? Part 2 (John 8:31–38)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, we return to the temple courts as Jesus continues His confrontation with those who claim to believe in Him.Last time, we heard Him say, "If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31–32)But now, Jesus presses that truth even deeper — and what He reveals cuts to the heart of human pride. They protest, "We have never been enslaved to anyone."Yet Jesus exposes the hidden slavery beneath their self-confidence: "Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin." (John 8:34)Then He draws a breathtaking contrast — between the slave who cannot remain in the house forever and the Son who abides forever.Only the Son can set you free, because only the Son belongs there by right.Freedom, Jesus says, is not about independence — it’s about belonging.True freedom is found not in doing whatever we want, but in being restored to the One we were made for.And the tragedy of this moment is that many who heard Him couldn’t handle the truth. They wanted liberation without lordship — redemption without repentance. But Jesus will not soften His words, because love always tells the truth, even when it hurts to hear it.

  25. 79

Episode 79: Can You Handle the Truth? Part 1 (John 8:31–38)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, Jesus turns from the skeptical crowd to those who have believed in Him — and He draws a dividing line that runs straight through the heart of every person. He says, "If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."But as soon as those words leave His mouth, the tension explodes. The Jews protest — "We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone!"They can’t see it yet, but Jesus is exposing a deeper bondage — not political, but spiritual. Here, He reveals that the real slavery is sin, and the only path to freedom is through the Son.True discipleship isn’t about heritage or self-righteousness — it’s about remaining in His Word until it remakes you from the inside out. This is the freedom only Christ can give:Not freedom to do what we want, but freedom finally to be who we were made to be — children of God, liberated by truth.

  26. 78

    Episode 78: "I’m Him!" Part 2 (John 8:21–30)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, we return to the temple courts for Part 2 of Jesus’ stunning declaration in John 8.The religious leaders still don’t understand where He has come from or where He is going. They question, they argue, and they scoff — but Jesus speaks with divine clarity: "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He."Here, Jesus unveils both the mystery of His identity and the mercy of His mission. The cross will be the moment of revelation — the hour when the Son of Man is lifted up, and the world sees that the One they crucified is the great "I Am."Even in rejection, God’s redemptive plan is unfolding exactly as He ordained.

  27. 77

    Episode 77: "I’m Him!" Part 1 (John 8:21–30)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, Jesus sharpens the warning He began in the temple courts: "I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin." The religious leaders scoff, unable to understand. Yet Jesus makes it plain — unless they believe that He is who He claims to be, the great "I Am," they will perish apart from God.Here, the dividing line grows unavoidable: life or death, belief or unbelief, forgiveness or judgment. The Light has come, but to reject Him is to remain in darkness forever.

  28. 76

Episode 76: "I Am the Light of the World" Part 2 (John 8:12–20)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, we continue with Jesus’ declaration, "I am the light of the world." But this time, the focus sharpens: Jesus warns of the danger of dying in sin if we do not believe that He is who He claims to be — the great "I Am."The religious leaders remain blind, locked in their unbelief. But Jesus speaks with authority from the Father, unveiling the seriousness of rejecting Him and the hope of trusting Him.Light and darkness, life and death, belief and unbelief — the dividing lines could not be sharper.

  29. 75

Episode 75: "I Am the Light of the World" Part 1 (John 8:12–20)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, we move from the tension of stones in the temple courts to one of the greatest declarations in all of Scripture. Standing in the midst of the Feast of Tabernacles — a celebration filled with light — Jesus proclaims: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."The Pharisees immediately challenge Him, demanding proof and questioning His authority. But Jesus answers with divine certainty: His witness is true because He speaks as the One sent by the Father. In a world filled with shadows of sin and confusion, Jesus doesn’t just offer light — He is the Light. And that light reveals, divides, and saves.

  30. 74

Episode 74: "Let Him Without Sin Cast the First Stone!" Part 2 (John 7:53–8:11)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, we return to the temple courts where a woman, caught in adultery, has been dragged before Jesus. The accusers are gathered, stones in hand, certain they have finally trapped Him.They demand justice. They demand a verdict. And with chilling self-righteousness, they press Him to choose: condemn her, or contradict the Law.But then Jesus bends down, writes on the ground, and speaks the words that still echo across centuries: "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."In a single sentence, the trap collapses. The accusers are exposed. One by one, the stones drop. And the only One who could rightly condemn stands instead as her Redeemer.

  31. 73

Episode 73: "Let Him Without Sin Cast the First Stone!" Part 1 (John 7:53–8:11)

Welcome to The Word Became Fresh, the Bible-teaching ministry of Pastor Sebastian Petz from The WORD Church LA.In today’s episode, we step into one of the most dramatic encounters in the Gospels — the story of the woman caught in adultery. The scribes and Pharisees drag her before Jesus, publicly shamed, guilty under the Law, and cornered by those who want to trap Him.It is a scene of humiliation and hypocrisy, of shame exposed and motives laid bare. They ask Jesus: "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. What do You say?"Behind their question is a deadly trap. If Jesus condemns her, He compromises His message of mercy. If He releases her, He appears to deny God’s law. But as we’ll see, the wisdom of Christ cannot be boxed in. He will neither trample justice nor abandon mercy.

  32. 72

It’s the last and greatest day of the Feast of Tabernacles. The water-pouring ritual has just ended. The priests and people stand in anticipation. And in that climactic silence, Jesus stands and cries out:"If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’"The words electrify the crowd. Some are stirred with faith. Others are split with confusion. The temple guards are undone, admitting, "No one ever spoke like this man!" But the religious leaders harden even further, their blindness deepening as they reject the One standing before them.As Pastor Sebastian unpacks this powerful passage, we’ll see how Jesus reveals Himself as the true source of living water—the fulfillment of God’s promises, the satisfaction of the soul’s thirst, and the fountain of the Spirit.Let’s listen in as Christ’s voice echoes through the centuries, inviting the thirsty, exposing unbelief, and pointing us to the life only He can give.
