J.C. Penney: The Golden Rule is Not Enough!
Join host Greg Dowdy on Traveler’s Tales as he retells the surprising spiritual journey of James Cash Penney — the man behind the J.C. Penney empire. This episode traces Penney’s early life in Missouri, his family’s faith influence, and the founding of his first store in Kemmer, Wyoming, which grew into a national chain built on the Golden Rule: “As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” The episode covers Penney’s extraordinary rise in business, the establishment of the J.C. Penney Company in 1913, and the devastating 1929 crash that wiped out his fortune, damaged his health, and exposed a deeper spiritual void. Penney realized he had been living off "spiritual capital"—the inherited faith and moral principles of his upbringing—rather than maintaining an ongoing, personal relationship with God. But that all changed! Visit enjoyingthejourney.org/gospel/ to learn more about knowing Jesus. Read more about J.C. Penney HERE. The next Christmas, he wrote in his journal, “How inexpressively sad are all holidays.” Longfellow slipped into deep depression. There were ninety and nine that safely lay in the shelter of the fold, but one was out on the hills away, far off from the gates of gold — away on the mountains wild and bare, away from the tender Shepherd’s care, away from the tender Shepherd’s care. 2. “Lord, thou hast here thy ninety and nine; are they not enough for thee?” But the Shepherd made answer: “This of mine has wandered away from me, and although the road be rough and steep, I go to the desert to find my sheep, I go to the desert to find my sheep.” 3. But none of the ransomed ever knew how deep were the waters crossed; nor how dark was the night that the Lord passed thro’ ere he found his sheep that was lost. Out in the desert he heard its cry — sick and helpless, and ready to die, sick and helpless, and ready to die. 4. “Lord, whence are those blood-drops all the way that mark out the mountain’s track?” “They were shed for one who had gone astray ere the Shepherd could bring him back.” “Lord, whence are thy hands so rent and torn?” “They’re pierced tonight by many a thorn, they’re pierced tonight by many a thorn.” 5. But all thro’ the mountains, thunder-riv’n, and up from the rocky steep, there arose a glad cry to the gate of heav’n, “Rejoice! I have found my sheep!” And the angels echoed around the throne, “Rejoice, for the Lord brings back his own! Rejoice, for the Lord brings back his own!”

Hymn History: I Gave My Life for Thee
Hymn History: I Gave My Life for Thee As Francis Ridley Havergal gazed thoughtfully at the painting (whose depiction was of Pilate presenting Christ to an angry mob), her eyes fell to an inscription below it. The inscription reads, “I have done this for you; what have you done for me?” Seventeen-year-old Havergal was so profoundly moved that she went straight home and began writing a poem. She spent quite some time trying to write out her thoughts. Eventually, Francis gave up and threw her paper into the fire…or so she thought... Hear the story in today's Traveler's Tales. I gave, I gave My life for thee, What hast thou done for Me? 2. My Father's house of light, My glory-circled throne I left for earthly night, For wanderings sad and lone; I left, I left it all for thee, Hast thou left aught for Me? I left, I left it all for thee, Hast thou left aught for Me? 3. I suffered much for thee, More than thy tongue can tell, Of bitterest agony, To rescue thee from hell; I've borne, I've borne it all for thee, What hast thou borne for Me? I've borne, I've borne it all for thee, What hast thou borne for Me? 4. And I have brought to thee, Down from My home above, Salvation full and free, My pardon and My love; I bring, I bring rich gifts to thee, What hast thou brought to Me? The wonderful hymn, Near to the Heart of God, was born during a time of tremendous human suffering and sadness. Cleland McAfee found that unexpected problems or crises may come into our lives. Often, we cannot escape the pressures and shadows that accompany those problems. However, these can be faced with spiritual strength, which God faithfully provides. This is the message expressed in this song: There is a place of quiet rest...Near to the heart of God. Hear the story in today's Traveler's Tales. Read this true story HERE. There is a place of quiet rest Near to the heart of God, A place where sin cannot molest, Near to the heart of God. Refrain: O Jesus, blest Redeemer, Sent from the heart of God, Hold us who wait before Thee Near to the heart of God. 2. There is a place of comfort sweet Near to the heart of God, A place where we our Savior meet, Near to the heart of God. (Refrain) 3. There is a place of full release Near to the heart of God, A place where all is joy and peace, Near to the heart of God. (Refrain)

Gypsy Smith: I Have Never Lost the Wonder of It All
The Personal Testimony of Gypsy Smith: “I didn’t go to your colleges and seminaries. They wouldn’t have me….but I’ve been to the feet of Jesus, where the only true scholarship is learned. The way to Jesus is not by Cambridge and Oxford, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Socrates, Plato, Shakespeare, or the poets… It's over an old-fashioned hill called Calvary. I’m God’s messenger from the gypsy tent. It’s the message that’s important, not the messenger." In the latter years of his life, Vance Havner said to him: "Gypsy, I heard you preach... over fifty years ago--my, how you blessed my heart then. I have never forgotten it - but again tonight, how my heart was warmed and thrilled! Gypsy, tell me - what's the secret?" Gypsy answered, "Sir, I have never lost the wonder of it all." It was this simple statement that gave birth to the wonderful hymn written by Al Smith. Listen to this true story of Gypsy Smith and the story behind "I Have Never Lost the Wonder of It All." Christians You Should Know: C.T. Studd
C.T. Studd was a strong leader, gifted athlete, and bold missionary. While no man is perfect, God delights in using vessels that desire His blessing and power upon their lives. Studd was one such man. C.T. was born into considerable wealth, a household name in England, and one who enjoyed tremendous publicity and pleasure. The Lord used the serious illness of his brother to awaken Studd to spiritual realities he had ignored. As he sat hour by hour with his sick brother, a strange thing happened. His dear brother (G.B.) began caring nothing for fame or fortune - he cared only for the things of God. C.T. recalled that time this way: "Now what is all the popularity of the world worth to George? What is all the fame and flattery worth? What is it worth to possess all the riches in the world, when a man comes to face Eternity?" And a voice seemed to answer, 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.'" This was the beginning of Studd's surrender to God's will in his life. Read this true story HERE. Christians You Should Know: Richard Wurmbrand
Richard Wurmbrand was imprisoned for 14 years in Communist Romania for his unwavering faith in Christ. In this episode of Traveler's Tales, discover the powerful story of a man who endured torture and solitary confinement yet never ceased preaching the gospel—even to his captors. His testimony (and that of his wife) challenges every believer to stand boldly for Christ, no matter the cost. Remarkably, God did not use the winsome arguments of a clever preacher to soften his hard, atheist heart; he used a faithful carpenter in the small mountain village. Read this true story HERE. Encouragement, Books, and Suffering: The Ministry of Susannah Spurgeon
Susannah Spurgeon was a remarkable woman. A true servant of the Lord and helper to her husband - the Prince of Preachers. Susannah believed strongly in what God had called Charles Spurgeon to do. She wanted his preaching to be preserved and used for generations to come. She accomplished this work through her famous Book Fund. Richard Day records that she "saved every five-shilling piece got." Upon the publishing of Lectures to My Students, Susannah had saved enough to purchase 100 copies of it and send them to various ministers at no charge - this was the start of the Book Fund. Ultimately, due to Mrs. Spurgeon's work, the Book Fund mailed over 250,000 volumes to thousands of ministers around the world. Read this true story HERE. When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done. Refrain: Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your blessings, see what God hath done; Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your many blessings, see what God hath done. 2. Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings, ev'ry doubt will fly, And you will be singing as the days go by. (Refrain) 3. When you look at others with their lands and gold, Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold; Count your many blessings, money cannot buy Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high. (Refrain) 4. So, amid the conflict, whether great or small, Do not be discouraged, God is over all; Count your many blessings, angels will attend, Help and comfort give you to your journey's end. (Refrain)

Hymn History: Guide Me, Oh Thou Great Jehovah
Hymn History: Guide Me, Oh Thou Great Jehovah Behind today’s hymn is a fascinating tale of how our God is always at work among His people. Wales in the early to mid-18th century was a very dark place. But God was at work, stirring His people. William Williams traversed over 100,000 miles in his ministry. We can easily imagine the many times he had to stop to ask for guidance and direction from others. As he traveled on horseback for 43 years, he surely experienced many difficulties and hardships. Thankfully, his deep faith in God is what brought him to write the mighty prayer/hymn that we know and love today. Based heavily upon God’s guidance to the children of Israel, William’s words capture the cry of a searching heart. “Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” – Psalm 107:6-8 *Learn more about trusting Christ at enjoyingthejourney.org/gospel Read this true story HERE. Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but thou art mighty; hold me with thy pow’rful hand. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more, feed me till I want no more. 2. Open now the crystal fountain whence the healing stream doth flow; let the fiery, cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong deliv’rer, strong deliv’rer, be thou still my strength and shield, be thou still my strength and shield. 3. When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; death of death and hell’s destruction, land me safe on Canaan’s side. Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever give to thee, I will ever give to thee.

Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, Mount of God’s unchanging love. Here I raise my Ebenezer; Hither by Thy help I’m come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed His precious blood. O to grace how great a debtor Daily I’m constrained to be! Let that grace now like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above.
