Uncomfortable [Revisited] Sermon 4 Uncomfortable Conversations Acts 4:23-31 ESV Ephesians 6:18-19 ESV I. The Battle Behind the Conversation Matthew 26:40-41 Real factors that contribute to the uncomfortable nature of engaging gospel conversations: 1. Fear 2. Inexperience 3. Inadequacy II. The Barriers that Silence Us 1. Fear 2. Selfishness 3. Busyness 4. Callousness 5. Laziness When will the concept of unreached peoples become intolerable to the church? What will it take to wake us up to the dearth of the gospel among the peoples of the world? David Platt Factors that are necessary to have uncomfortable gospel conversations: 1. Love 2. Faith 3. Courage 4. Selflessness 5. Time/Intentionality 6. Prayer "It makes me wonder if we've lost our capacity to weep. It makes me wonder if we have subtly, dangerously, and almost unknowingly guarded our lives, our families, and even our churches from truly being affected by God's words to us in a world of urgent spiritual and physical needs around us. We talk a lot about the need to know what we believe in our heads, yet I wonder if we have forgotten to feel what we believe in our hearts. How else are we to explain our ability to sit in services where we sing songs and hear sermons celebrating how Jesus is the hope of the world, yet rarely (if ever) fall on our faces weeping for those who don't have this hope and then take action to make this hope known to them? Why today do we seem to be so far from the way of Jesus? Jesus wept over those in need. He was moved with compassion for the crowds. He lived and loved to bring healing and comfort to the broken. He died for the sins of the world. So why are those of us who carry His Spirit not moved and compelled in the same way? Surely God didn't design the gospel of Jesus to be confined to our minds and mouths in the church, yet disconnected from our emotions and actions in the world." - David Platt III. The Calling that Compels Us John 4:1-10 Souls must truly matter before we are intentional about reaching them for Christ. Acts 8:29-31 Romans 10:11-15 Mark 16:15 1 Peter 3:15 1 Timothy 2:1-4 2 Timothy 1:7-10 Acts 17:30-31 Matthew 5:14-16 2 Corinthians 4:7

Uncomfortable [Revisited] - Sermon 2 Uncomfortable Calling I. The Call of Christ Is a Holy Invitation 2 Peter 1:2-11 2 Timothy 1:8-11 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 ESV Genesis 12:1-9 ESV Isaiah 6:8 ESV Matthew 11:28-30 ESV Acts 2:39 ESV 1 Corinthians 7:17-24 ESV Matthew 4:19 ESV Luke 9:23-26 Luke 18:23-30 II. The Call of Christ Requires Surrender Answering the Call of Christ takes: 1. Faith 2. Fortitude Matthew 20:1-16 "Nothing hurts God's work more than complaining people. It's alarming to see many Christian people complaining. The most happy people are contented people. Whatever you do, be faithful, doing it with all your might, and He will reward you for it." III. The Call of Christ is Worth the Cost Philippians 2:12-18 Luke 14:15-35 Revelation 3:20 John 14:6 A call to deny self, take up the cross daily, and follow after Christ. A call of glory and virtue. A call that we are to remember we have been cleansed from a life of sin. A call to eternal salvation from sin and death/hell. A holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. A call to fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in us, and us in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. A call that is all-inclusive and exclusive at the same time. Reserved for those who accept the invitation. A call to forsake all for Him. A call to love and allegiance to Christ above ALL. A call to TRUE rest, to a light burden, and to be yoked with Christ. A call that has multiplied blessings both now and in eternity.

Uncomfortable [Revisited] - Sermon 1 Challengers to Comfort Matthew 16:24 John 16:33 Hebrews 4:12 "What we think we want from a church is almost never what we need. However challenging it may be to embrace, God's idea of church is far more glorious than any dream church we could conjure. It's not about finding a church that perfectly fits my [preferences]. It's about becoming like 'living stones' that are 'being built up as a spiritual house' focused on and held together by Jesus, the stone the builders rejected who became the cornerstone (1 Peter 2:4-7)." "The Christian landscape is strewn with the wreckage of derelict, half-built towers - the ruins of those who began to build and were unable to finish. All too many people still ignore Christ's warning and undertake to follow him without first pausing to reflect on the cost of doing so. The result is the great scandal of so-called nominal Christianity. In countries to which Christian civilization has spread, large numbers of people have covered themselves with a decent, but thin, veneer of Christianity. They have allowed themselves to become a little bit involved; enough to be respectable but not enough to be uncomfortable. Their religion is a great, soft cushion. It protects them from the hard unpleasantness of life, while changing its place and shape to suit their convenience. No wonder cynics complain of hypocrites in the church and dismiss religion as escapism." Comfortable Christianity produces powerless disciples. Genesis 3:1-6 Sin is rarely presented as ugly. It is presented as reasonable, beneficial, and improving. Genesis 3:7-9 Psalm 51:4 James 5:16 Genesis 3:10-24 The lie: the enemy convinced them that what they wanted would actually be received by disobeying the very Word of God. Comfort didn't cause the fall - it made the fall worth it. I. OBEDIENCE CAN BE UNCOMFORTABLE 1 Samuel 15:22 "Each act of obedience by the Christian is a modest proof, unequivocal for all its imperfection, of the reality of what he attests." Philippians 2:5-8 II. STEADFASTNESS CAN BE UNCOMFORTABLE 1 Corinthians 15:58 "We live in what one writer has called the 'age of sensation.' We think that if we don't feel something, there can be no authenticity in doing it... Worship is an act that develops feelings for God, not a feeling for God that is expressed in an act of worship." "a long obedience in the same direction." Luke 9:23-26
