Ep. 207: Steve Zuckerman (Sesame Street "I in the Sky," "Lowercase n," & "Imagination Rain.")

Ep. 207: Steve Zuckerman (Sesame Street "I in the Sky," "Lowercase n," & "Imagination Rain.") Steve Zuckerman is a composer for television and movies, a songwriter, and a singer who wrote songs for at least three animated Sesame Street inserts: "I in the Sky," "Lowercase n," and "Imagination Rain."Steve Zuckerman Biography I was legally deaf until a series of operations restored my hearing. I was seven at the time. I knew from that moment on that my future lay in making “noise.” I created my first composition for orchestra at age ten. There was no mystery throughout my formative years as to which path I would follow. Before my twentieth birthday, I was fortunate to begin my professional career writing for the Children’s Television Workshop for many animated letter commercials (some are still on the air). Later that same year, I was tasked with creating the theme music for the ABC network’s Saturday Superstar Movie and commissioned to score three one-hour specials for that time slot.I found a niche in creating music for commercials. Later, I was privileged to be a composer and copywriter for the successful launches of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers toylines. From then on, I have focused on youthful audiences and their associated products. Most would agree that music is a powerful tool for conveying emotional content and an essential part of supporting visuals and the spoken word. My experience has shown me that “getting it right” is a subjective task that requires much more than good communication between client and composer. It’s about service. It’s about turn-around, and it’s about attitude. These are the hallmarks of professionalism that, when supported by craftsmanship and discipline, result in extraordinary outcomes regardless of how challenging the circumstance. It’s about commitment to excellence. That has always been my focus.https://www.musicz.tvCo -host Erica Erica Johnson: Vocals, bass, spoons, percussion of The Dead Hensons. The Dead Hensons were an eight-piece San Francisco Bay Area Jim Henson tribute band that played music from various Henson projects, but primarily Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and The Muppet Movie. The band has also covered songs from The Electric Company. The band name is a play on the Dead Kennedys, a San Francisco Bay Area punk band that formed in the late 1970s.The band released a 7-inch record with professionally recorded versions of "Pinball Number Count," "Riverbottom Nightmare Band," "The Lonely N," and "The First Day of School."They have also recorded bootleg and live versions of other Muppet-related songs including "Between," "Can You Picture That?" "Candy Man," "Eleven," "Exit," "Ladybugs' Picnic," "Movin' Right Along," "Rainbow Connection," and "Subway."Due to changes of address among members, the band gave its farewell performance at the Bottom of the Hill on December 4, 2009. The special double setlist included "Mr. Bassman," "Jellyman Kelly," "I'm Going to Go Back There Someday," and "A Bear Eats Bear Food."https://web.archive.org/web/20210506041204/http://www.deadhensons.com/CreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer and episode editor https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comEpisode EditorsOtter Castro https://www.instagram.com/ottercastroPodcast Episode Page www.vintageannalsarchive.com/vintage-annals-archive-podcast.htmlPlease join our Patreon https://patreon.com/VintageAnnalsArchive

Ep. 205: Nichole Sakura (Micro Budget/Superstore) About Nichole Sakura Nichole Sakura originally hails from the San Francisco Bay area where she was born to a Japanese mother and an Irish Catholic father. Her love of movies and stories about outsiders drew her to pursue acting and comedy, where she has gone on to become most recognized for her role as ‘Cheyenne’ on NBC's SUPERSTORE. Ep. 204: Mike Kuchar (Kuchar Brothers) filmmaker/painter/comic artist/cinematographer

Ep. 204: Mike Kuchar (Kuchar Brothers) filmmaker/painter/comic artist/cinematographer I’ve been a fan of The Kuchar Brothers for almost twenty years and they are among my top 5 directors. They are known as heroes to filmmaker John Waters and were part of the underground film scene in New York City in the late 1950’s and 1960’s as championed by film curator Jonas Mekas. This was one of my favorite interviews and one of the biggest honors I’ve ever had in doing this podcast. Mike is one of the funniest, kindest, creative, and most thoughtful filmmakers of the past 50 years. The way he speaks about making films is truly magical. The care he puts into the work and the reverence he has for the actors in his films are a true rarity. We talked about a lot of topics, but my favorite thing was when Mike spoke about remembering his birth. That’s the kind of magical and wonderful things he can do with his brain. I’m pretty sure he spoke about that ability as a way of time traveling through his own memories. He is operating at genius level. If you don’t know his films, Mike directed a film called “Sins of the Fleshapoids” which is one of my favorite of his films. It features his brother George in a lead role. https://tubitv.com/movies/100027431/sins-of-the-fleshapoidsMany of the Kuchar Brothers films can be found here to watch for free below at Penn Sound. It says it’s George’s films but it has Mike’s films as well. PennSound: George KucharMike Kuchar has been a majorly influential figure in the underground film and comics scenes since the 1960s, first in his hometown of the Bronx and, from the 1970s on, in the creative hotbed of San Francisco. Together with his twin brother George, the Kuchars gained cult recognition for their over-the-top, no-budget films that sent up Hollywood epics, weepy romances, and sci-fi B movies. In iconic films like Sins of the Fleshapoids (1965), The Craven Sluck (1967), and Death Quest of the Ju-Ju Cults(1976), Mike developed his distinctive style that jettisoned traditional narrative structure and acting professionalism in favor of extravagant, tender sagas that would have a significant impact on emerging theorizations and expressions of camp as an artistic sensibility. John Waters, Guy Maddin, and Wayne Wang all cite the Kuchars as an important influence. (In It Came From Kuchar Waters calls them “true underground filmmakers,” says they should be knighted, and points to George’s cinematic use of turds as a precursor to his own Pink Flamingos; Maddin, discussing their aesthetic, recalls the actors’ “aggressively stylized voices” and remembers feeling as though “chocolate bars had been applied to the eyebrows,” which are like no other eyebrows in the history of film.) At a time when Andy Warhol was making movies in which nothing happened, and non-narrative filmmakers like Stan Brakhage were making experimental, formalist films, the Kuchar brothers pumped out one mutant Hollywood melodrama after another—works that, in a climate of hip, affectless filmmaking, were “all affect.” Jonas Mekas, film critic for the Village Voice at the time, speculated that the makers of Barbarella had stolen ideas directly from the Kuchar film Sins of the Fleshapoids.- Evan James (from an article in Mother Jones) 4-13-2010https://www.kucharbrothers.org/mike-kucharhttps://www.kucharbrothers.orghttps://www.instagram.com/kucharbrothersCredits This episode was produced, researched, and (barely) edited by Rich Wexler https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/vintage-annals-archive-podcast.htmlFollow us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/vintageannalsarchiveandpodcastPlease support our PatreonPlease consider becoming a member of our Patreon as it goes to paying out editors well and to being able to start to afford paying out guests for their time that are more working class artists and musicians. https://patreon.com/VintageAnnalsArchive

Ep. 201: “We Are Together Again” New Album by Bonnie “Prince” Billy Out Now!

About Bonnie “Prince” Billy The man who sings and composes under the name Bonnie "Prince" Billy and acts under the name Will Oldham has, over the past three-plus decades, made an idiosyncratic journey through, and an indelible mark on, the worlds of indie rock and independent cinema.About “We Are Together Again” Out Now! In 2019 we started in to exploring a process of making Louisville, KY records again, in Louisville studios with Louisville musicians. We did I Made a Place this way, then Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You. Things were going well, and then they started going better. The Purple Bird alit on our shoulders and sung its mating call into the ears of listeners all over the world, thanks primarily to the guidance of friend and producer David Ferguson. That bird is out flying around still, leaving abundances of smiling faces in its mighty wake. Having learned thus to fly, Bonny got back to work on the Louisville-first mandate, digging back into songs left open on the table during the Purple process. Bonny went into End of an Ear studio with Jim Marlowe engineering and co-producing; together they assembled a platoon of brilliant singers, blowers and pickers, including especially Bonny’s current tour mates Jacob Duncan (flute and saxophone) and Thomas Deakin (clarinet, whistle, baritone electric guitar, accordion, cornet). Chris Bush applied his modular synth skills to Duncan’s sax for “Davey Dead”. And harpist Erin Hill, who Oldham first met back in the 1980s when he was a wee lad, sings and plays all over “Davey Dead”. Oldham’s cousin Ryder McNair took a break from assistant-scoring Ridley Scott productions to write string quartet arrangements for these songs, and Will’s brother Ned returns after two decades to sing and play bass. This record was made closer to the Ohio River than any Oldham’s been involved with since 1993’s Palace Brothers There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You. Louisville’s current-and-past vital musical community is hi-lighted on every song. Catherine Irwin, who sang on the BPB release Ease Down the Road, is back here on “Hey Little” and “Vietnam Sunshine”. Lacey Guthrie, Tory Fisher and Katie Peabody, the three front women of the band Duchess, sing together on the opening and closing songs, parallel odes to the beast that is fear. The door was swung ajar by the Purple Bird, with its new take on homespun country bombast, and Bonny has stuck his gorgeous foot into that door to whisper his “I love you”s to all who need them (which we kind of all do). We start small, continue small, like oak tree seeds or the sperm-and-egg concoctions mixologized by the parents of movers-and-shakers since the dawn of time. Plant these songs into your soul’s brain, into your existence’s heart and the trees will grow and fruit and flourish and nourish. Ep. 200: Guy Maddin (Filmmaker)

Ep. 200: Guy Maddin (Filmmaker) Guy Maddin has directed thirteen feature-length movies, most recently Rumours (2024), starring Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander; as well as The Forbidden Room (2015), My Winnipeg (2007), and The Saddest Music in the World (2003). He has also mounted over seventy performances of his films around the world featuring live elements – orchestra, sound effects, singing and narration — most recently, The Green Fog (2016), which was accompanied live by the Kronos Quartet. His screenplay collaborators include Nobel Laureate Kazuo Ishiguro and poet John Ashbery. His movies Archangel (1990) & The Heart of the World (2000) both won National Society of Film Critics Awards for Best Experimental Film. For the past 15 years he has partnered with co-directors Evan and Galen Johnson."No one makes films like fabulist Guy Maddin. From his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Maddin is isolated from the facile preoccupations and coarse trends which plague the majority of Hollywood films nowadays. It could be argued, though, that he is also estranged from what passes for independent cinema. Truly a stranger in a strange land. But what a strange land indeed! His films are black comedic excursions into the netherworlds of silent film, but he also has an uncanny feel for replicating images and sounds from painting, classical music, and literature. They could easily become a pretentious mess in less-skilled hands, yet Maddin’s melodramatic films are anything but. They’re playful, complex, hilarious, and exquisite; a perfect melange of high art and camp. Cinematic images that can only be described as post-modern phantasms. Perhaps the only other filmmaker today who is so comfortable reworking such melodramatic terrain is - Lars von TrierHis films include 1988 - Tales from the Gimli Hospital1990 - Archangel1992 - Careful1995 - Sissy-Boy Slap-Party 2002 - Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary 2003 - Cowards Bend the Knee2003 - The Saddest Music in the World 2006 - Brand Upon the Brain!2007 - My Winnipeg2017 - The Green Fog2024 - Rumours Guy is currently busy colour-correcting the 4K restoration of his film CAREFUL (1992) so please keep an eye out on his Instagram guy.maddin for updates.https://www.instagram.com/guy.maddinPLEASE SUPPORT OUR PATREON AND/OR BANDCAMP so we can pay our guests!!! I’m in need of doing the podcast for now on in an independent manner and going to be working on that over the next 3-6 months. All prior episodes will stay up! There is no such thing as a free podcast, album, film, and most of these platforms keep 95% of the profits. It’s just not a system I can ethically support any longer. I don’t mind spending $4000-5000 a year to do this but I’m sick of not benefiting from these systems. My patreon has been updated a lot as of late and has a lot of amazing uncensored content I can’t post on Instagram. I’m releasing early episodes and video only episodes. If you like the podcast I need to ask you to support it. I get no money from Spotify and no money from Apple Podcasts and yet they sell ads and still make money. I’m just done working my ass off to make billionaires richer. I’d also like to have enough money to throw some of it to our guests. We are going to be putting out our 200th episode as a two parter with Bonnie Prince Billy and Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin. I’m lucky to get some amazing guests but I’m done with having no way to monetize any of it. Please do your part to help if you consume the podcast. www.patreon.com/vintageannalsarchive

Ep. 198: Deborah Dash Moore Walkers in the City: Jewish Street Photographers of Midcentury New York

Deborah Dash Moore Walkers in the City: Jewish Street Photographers of Midcentury New York - In the middle of the twentieth century, good cameras became smaller and lighter, enabling street photographers to roam alleyways, ride elevated trains and subways, and stroll beaches in summertime to capture daily life with urgency and intimacy. Walkers in the City showcases the distinctive urban vision that working-class Jewish photographers produced with these new cameras on New York City's streets and in public spaces. Drawing on the experiences of and photographs by a generation of young Jewish photographers who belonged to the New York Photo League, Deborah Dash Moore offers a new perspective on New York as seen through their eyes--a cityscape of working-class people and democratizing public transit. With their cameras, they pictured Gotham's abrasive social milieu and its evanescent textures and light, creating an archive of vernacular images of city life and a distinctive tradition of street photography that would be widely imitated. Walkers in the City documents how these roving, imaginative New Yorkers, entranced by the medium of photography, transformed everyday sights into rousing, joyous, and poignant moments of time, creating visual poetry out of the fabric of social life.About Deborah Dash Moore - Deborah Dash Moore is an American Jewish historian whose scholarship focuses on Jewish urban life, the creation of ethnic identity, and visual culture. Much of her work has concentrated on New York’s vibrant Jewish community, uncovering its neighborhoods, streets, institutions, and photographic images.  She has also explored the postwar Jewish culture of America’s Sunbelt, ventured into the experience of Jews who served in World War II, and examined the impact of women and gender in Jewish life.  Moore has been a trailblazer in the field of American Jewish history who has chronicled the myriad expressions of Jewish culture in 20th-century America. She has been an influential teacher and mentor as well as a key leader in the field of modern Jewish history.https://lsa.umich.edu/history/people/faculty/ddmoore.htmlCreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer and episode editor https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comEpisode EditorsOtter Castro https://www.instagram.com/ottercastro

    Ep. 195: Scarlet Page (Photographer)

Scarlet Page has been a passionate photographer her whole life and her education culminated in studying a degree in photography in the early ’90s. She quickly developed her own fresh, documentary style of reportage. She travelled America with The Smashing Pumpkins, The Beastie Boys and the other acts on the Lollapolooza tour of 1994.  The following year she had a shot feature in the album artwork of The Verve’s ‘A Northern Soul'. Working on ‘A Northern Soul’ accelerated Scarlet’s career and since then she has gone on to work with some of the music world’s biggest acts. She worked closely with Robbie Williams on several projects including album artwork, behind the scenes material and the acclaimed book ‘Somebody Someday’. She has toured the World extensively with bands such as The Darkness, Placebo, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Rolling Stones and Stereophonics. Her photographs have been used to grace album covers, album artwork, tour material, book covers and as collected prints. She continues to be commissioned by all the major record labels to shoot artwork, press and marketing campaigns for international bands. Scarlet’s calm demeanour and professional approach have enabled her to diversify the subjects that she photographs. Subsequently she now works closely with an interesting variety of clients including Fearne Cotton and her Happy Place Festival brand, The Henley Literary Festival (capturing celebrity writers, politicians, bloggers, TV personalities etc) and inspiring business women such as Jo Tutchener Sharp, founder of clothing brand Scamp and Dude, to create content for all of her platforms. Scarlet has also worked extensively for charities including CALM, PDSA, Teenage Cancer Trust and Warchild. Exhibitions of her work have been shown at The Royal Albert Hall, Proud Gallery, Camden and, in 2019, Scarlet exhibited and worked with local celebrated musicians in Buenos Aires as part of her Resonators + project. Since the pandemic there has been a huge interest in Scarlet’s archive work - her limited edition prints alongside her weekly ‘words behind the shot’ videos have been gaining a cult following. In 2020 she was selected as a winner of The British Journal of Photography’s ‘Portrait of Britain’ award and she has become an active member of the Association of Photographers and its associated women’s group f22.In 2022 Scarlet proudly became a Nikon Ambassador, she has used the brand throughout her 30 year career. In 2023 Scarlet exhibited simultaneously in Oxfordshire, New York and Sydney Australia. In September 2024 Behind The Gallery presented '30' Exhibition in London, celebrating 30 years of being a music photographer. In 2025 Scarlet was a judge for The Abbey Road Music Photography Awards. Ep. 194: Fck My Son w/ Director Todd Rohal

Ep. 194: Fck My Son w/ Director Todd Rohal Todd Rohal is a writer and director whose work has appeared on Adult Swim, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Max, AMC, Amazon, and The Criterion Channel. His feature credits include The Guatemalan Handshake, which he self-distributed worldwide with a single 35mm print; The Catechism Cataclysm (IFC Films), which premiered at Sundance; Nature Calls, starring Patton Oswalt, Rob Riggle, and Johnny Knoxville; and Uncle Kent 2, winner of the Audience Award for Visions at SXSW. His most recent feature, Fuck My Son!, premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and is currently being distributed around the world as a theatrical-only event. An alumnus of the Sundance Writers Labs, Rohal’s short film Rat Pack Rat won the Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at Sundance, and his work has been selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick on six occasions. He has created original work for Adult Swim, directed episodes of Netflix’s Haters Back Off series and Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, and wrote the screenplay for Chris Columbus’s third Christmas Chronicles film for Netflix.About Fck My SonSprung from the irreverent imagination of Johnny Ryan, whose notorious comics have satirically provoked every sacred cow under the sun since the early 1990s, and copulating with the sensibilities of Todd Rohal (The Catechism Cataclysm), one of America’s most anarchic contemporary surrealists, Fuck My Son! is the most abject exercise in poor taste since Pink Flamingos. Akin to being sneezed upon by Dan Aykroyd’s penile nose from Nothing But Trouble (google it), this is an uncut, unclean geek show of odious viscosity and a gleefully depraved spectacle that will leave Midnighters gasping, gagging, and/or guffawing with infectious laughter — at least for those who have accepted their eternal damnation in Hell.Instagram Fck My Son https://www.instagram.com/fckmysonTodd Rohal https://www.instagram.com/toddrohalCreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer and episode editor https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comEpisode EditorsOtter Castro https://www.instagram.com/ottercastro

    Ep. 192: Charles Traub (Photographer/Educator)

Ep. 192: Charles Traub (Photographer/Educator) Charles H. Traub was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1945. He studied English literature at the University of Illinois, and joined the Peace Corps after graduation in 1967. An accident in Ethiopia forced him home to Kentucky where he met Ralph Eugene Meatyard, who became an important inspiration and friend. After service in the United States Army in 1969, he decided to pursue photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago. There he studied with Aaron Siskind, Arthur Siegel and Garry Winogrand. His thesis of abstracted black-and-white landscapes “Edge to Edge” was widely exhibited, and featured in a solo show at the Art Institute of Chicago. Following his landscape work he made three well-known series of black-and-white photographs: Street and Parties (from The Chicago Period), and his first monograph, Beach, all used an innovative vignette on a Rolleiflex SL66.In 1971 Traub began teaching full time at Columbia College, Chicago and was responsible for developing new curriculum for the growing public interest in the medium. Traub was instrumental in developing the school’s Contemporary Trends Lecture Series that celebrated renowned international photographers and image-makers. Subsequently, he became chairperson of the department and founded the Chicago Center for Contemporary Photography, which became the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MOCP). In 1973, along with his colleague Douglas Baz, Traub went on a sabbatical to make the Cajun Document, an extensive look at the culture of the Louisiana bayous.Traub’s first major body of work in color, Street Portraits, began in 1976, continued after his move to New York City, and culminated in the book Lunchtime. His move to New York was followed by his first solo exhibition of photographs at the Light Gallery. It’s owner, Tennyson Schad, then hired Traub to become director of this prestigious gallery. Traub curated numerous exhibitions there, including The New Vision: Forty Years of Photography at the Institute of Design; Aaron Siskind’s Harlem Document; Designed for Photography; and The Color Work of the FSA. Traub also showcased major photographers new to the gallery: William Klein, Luigi Ghirri, Ray Metzker, Mario Giacomelli and Louis Faurer among others. After leaving the gallery in 1980 Traub continued his personal work and formed the Wayfarer partnership with Jerry Gordon—a specialized editorial and corporate photography agency. Their work was featured in many magazines, including Life, Time, Forbes, Fortune, Business Week, New York and Avenue as well as annual reports for Fortune 500 companies. Throughout the 1980s Traub traveled to Italy, Brazil, Haiti, Morocco and the Far East for his personal work. Dolce Viaand In the Still Life are compendiums of photographs from that period. In 1987 Traub was asked to design a graduate studies program for the School of Visual Arts, which became the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department. Since its inception, the program has been distinguished for its innovative use of digital technology, the inclusion of all aspects of the lens and screen arts and its internationally celebrated faculty. As an early advocate of the power of digital photography, Traub adapted it to his own practice. His philosophy about the importance of digital thinking is reflected in the manifesto “Creative Interlocutor” and the textbook In the Realm of the Circuit. Creative projects that highlight Traub’s integration of new technologies include the interactive website Still Life in America and the iBook No Perfect Heroes: Photographing Grant. Ep. 191: Arlene Gottfried Legacy Series Part Three (Maria Mayer Feng)

As the former caretaker of the Arlene Gottfried Legacy Instagram Project, I spent over 60 hours of research and around 18 hours of doing 12 interviews. Having done all of that, the name Maria Mayer Feng kept coming up again and again. It was my understanding she was considered to have had a huge role in Arlene finally putting out books of her own personal photography which had been hiding under her bed for years. Maria helped her make mach ups of book projects, and walked her lovingly through the process. It was such a pleasure to speak to Maria and it was abundantly clear how much she cared about Arlene and how clear it was to Maria that Arlene had a rare talent. I mean there were a lot of folks who had big parts in this process as well, but I truly believe that Maria light the first match in the process. Maria Mayer Feng is a NYC-based luxury photo book designer, founder of Studio Maria Mayer Feng, who creates bespoke, artful keepsakes from personal photos and mementos, merging tactile design with memory, also known for her greeting card line, Vision & Paper, in Ridgefield, CT, blending paper craft with digital stories. She transforms "photo chaos" into beautifully designed heirloom books, offering a physical, artistic way to preserve personal histories, drawing on her interest in memory and interactive design from NYU. https://www.mariamayerfeng.comEdited by Otter Castro Interview by Rich Wexler

Ep. 188: This Ordinary Thing with Director Nick Davis

THIS ORDINARY THING- SYNOPSISHaunting and unforgettable, THIS ORDINARY THING tells the story of non-Jews who helped save Jewish people across Europe during The Holocaust. The film combines never-before-seen archival footage with the testimonies of over forty different people who, working independently and at great risk to themselves and their families, saved thousands of Jewish strangers from almost certain death. Narrated by an all-star cast, the film is a timely reminder of the pockets of goodness that can rise in a sea of evil: everyday people helping others who were “different" from them. Notably, none of the people featured in the film thought of themselves as heroes. And yet the film, with immense contemporary resonance, causes each of us to ask ourselves “What would I have done?” The film employs some of the world’s greatest actors, performing excerpts translated from the original transcripts. The cast, including Helen Mirren, F. Murray Abraham, Carrie Coon, Jeremy Irons, Ellen Burstyn, and Stephen Fry, have amassed five Oscars (and over twenty nominations), over sixty Emmy nominations, and over twenty-five Tony nominations in their illustrious careers.THIS ORDINARY THING- DIRECTOR STATEMENTNo film has ever changed me nearly the way this one has. To be honest, I never wanted to make it. I never wanted to make a Holocaust film. I never even wanted people to know I was Jewish. But now all that has changed. Here’s how it happened: one day in the Spring of 2022, a wonderful man I’d worked with in the past, Albert M. Tapper, called me and said what all filmmakers dream of hearing: “Do you have any films that need funding?” I didn’t - but said yes, then quickly drew up a list of seven possible projects and went to lunch with him. As we sat down and made small talk, before we could even get to my list, Al and I stumbled across a funny coincidence: we both knew about an organization called The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, that honored and supported non - Jewish people who had helped Jewish families during the Holocaust.Al’s face lit up -- as a staunch defender of the Jewish faith, he wanted to make a film that would honor and thank those people who had helped Jews during World War 2. As a non - practicing Jew in his mid - 50s, who had grown up delighting in the fact that because of my surname, no one would ever know I was Jewish, I knew it was too late. Given the state of the world, could I really afford NOT to make a film that honored people who tried to point out the essential sameness of all humans? By the end of the meal, the die was cast. In my researching, I soon found a treasure trove of interviews that had been conducted with the people who would become the subjects of the film – who are often called ‘The Righteous’ or ‘The Righteous among Nation s. ’ I had heard of Oskar Schindler, of course, but I had been totally unaware that there were more than 20,000 people who had been honored at Yad Vahsem in Jerusalem. These were all people who, working independently, at great risk to themselves and their families, saved thousands from almost certain death. The interviews I read were amazing and wildly varied – people from all walks of life, every part of Europe – these astonishing pockets of goodness in a sea of evil. And I realized what the film would be: celebrated actors reading from these remarkable transcripts, from people helping those who were "different" from them, with real archival footage from the time. I wanted to bring this all to life as best as I possibly could, telling the stories of these incredible people. Of course, none of the subjects of the film thought of themselves as heroes. Years later, many of them were inscribed on 'The Avenue of the Righteous' in Yad Vashem in Israel, given awards, and had trees planted in their honor. These stories remind us of In the end, what does it even mean to be “different”? -Nick Davis, November 2025

Ep. 186: Crispin Glover Talks No! You're Wrong. or: Spooky Action at a Distance (Episode Part Two)I had a great chat with Crispin Glover about his latest film No! You're Wrong. or: Spooky Action at a Distance. We got into his unique filmmaking process, his past films, and some very old school film processes that any film nerd would love to hear about. It was a great honor to talk to him about his work. He is currently touring with his new film and a few of his older films and I highly recommend you see them! Glover started developing the screenplay in 2007, as a project for he and his father, actor Bruce Glover, to act in together. Production of the film started in 2013 and originally wrapped in 2015, before Glover shot additional production segments yearly thereafter, wrapping principal photography in 2018. The film was primarily shot on sets constructed on shooting stages within the former horse stables on his property in the Czech Republic. It was the first of Glover's films to be shot on 35mm film stock, having previously only shot his films on 16mm film. To create an aesthetic comparable to films of the silent era, a hand-cranked camera previously owned by Karel Zeman was used for the segments of the film set in 1868 and 1888.Film is currently on tour, go to https://www.crispinglover.comNo! Ep. 175: Stephen Bluhm

Ep. 175: Stephen BluhmStephen Bluhm is a gifted songwriter and crooner, lauded by folks like Mike Watt and The Magnetic Fields. His orchestral pop transports me to another place, while his synth stylings recall the best of Talking Heads and Depeche Mode. On his latest album, Out of the Nowhere Into the Here, he explores new lyric and sonic territory, employing a dozen orchestral musicians along with his piano. The album has a companion instrumental version as well. I've known Stephen for years, since I booked shows in West Philadelphia, and noticed right away he always got a big, loving response from the audience. We've been friends ever since, and for 2 years, he's helped me edit and record intros to our Vintage Annals Archive podcast, and we use his music in the intros and outro on each episode. Aside from being a wonderful musician I'm grateful to know, he's a true sweetheart of a person. On this episode we play clips from some of the songs on his album and talk about his life, including his accidental kundalini awakening and its affect on him and his songwriting. You can find his music at stephenbluhm.bandcamp.com and any streaming site. CATSKILL, NY's Avalon Lounge Friday September 26th 8pm songwriter Stephen Bluhm's 40th birthday party: original chamber and synth pop AND Brian Wilson covers by Hudson Valley musicians. CreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer and episode editor https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comEpisode EditorsOtter Castro https://www.instagram.com/ottercastroRudy Fischmannhttps://www.instagram.com/onelastfisch

    Ep. 173: Richard O’Brien (Actor/Writer/Singer)

Ep. 173: Richard O’Brien (Actor/Writer/Singer)About Richard O’Brien Richard Timothy Smith was born in Cheltenham. At age 10, his father, previously an accountant, moved the family to Tauranga, New Zealand, to take up sheep farming. At age 22 he returned to England. His horse skills got him employment as a stuntman in Carry On Cowboy, 1966, and Casino Royal, 1967. He changed his name to O’Brien, his grandmother’s name, to avoid confusion with another Richard Smith. He was in the touring cast of Hair, 1969, where he met Tim Curry, and Kimi Wong who became his first wife. He had a small part in the stage version of Jesus Christ Superstar, 1972, which introduced him to director Jim Sharman, who later agreed to put on The Rocky Horror Show, Richard's first play. It played two years at the King’s Road Theatre, and was then made into a The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The film became defined as a cult classic and took off. The follow-up was called “Shock Treatment”. Richard acted in a variety of film and television including as the villain Gulnar in Robin of Sherwood, 1986, and as the eponymous Ink Thief, 1994, and as the host of the game show, Crystal Maze, 1990-3. He performed as a musician as Mephistopheles Smith. The cult phenomenon that sprung around it is unparalleled, and created not only the midnight screenings which continue to this day, but also a safe haven for those who ever felt different or marginalized – with particular significance for the queer community. Ep. 172: Greg Weeks (The Espers/Grass/Magus)

Ep. 172: Greg Weeks (The Espers/Grass/Magus) (Written by Greg) Skip past my birth and awkward teenage years to the formative experiences of purchasing my first acoustic guitar from the Big B Buzzo and my stint as dj (then music director) at SUNY Plattsburgh’s sadly re-monikered but then-titled WPLT. Ten watts of audience-less record spins aside, I fell in love with the industry, parlayed that love into an internship at the ultimately lame MTV Network, then drifted accidentally to a receptionist position at a NYC recording studio. While in NYC I recorded three albums and co-founded a progressive rock mail order company (New Sonic Architecture) that proved financially disastrous but highly educational. Several odd shifts later found me sleeping on Brooke Sietinsons’ floor and making the first Espers record. Gentrification pushed the band into a then dilapidated Fishtown, where we (the band) created a compound environment with the neighbors, held shows, and watched the so-called freak-folk scene unfold and evolve in real time. I recorded a fourth record (on 2” 8-track, like the first Espers record), met a very significant other, married, and migrated northeast, where I fashioned a far more sophisticated recording studio–Hexham Head. It was here that we rehearsed The Valerie Project, recorded Espers II and III and The Hive, an ill fated but creatively fulfilling solo record. It was also during this time that I started Language of Stone, a record label manufactured and distributed through Drag City, on which I released eleven excellent (I think) records. Times changed, economies tanked, children were conceived. Priorities shifted. But a funny thing happened. After ten years of near inactivity, I began writing again. Then the idea was floated of rebuilding Hexham Head, which led to the creation of a new solo record (If the Sun Dies), and talk of rebooting Language of Stone. Magus (with Jessica Weeks) was birthed, recorded, and slated as the label’s thirteenth release. Now, on the very day that I write this, the long lost Grass record has entered public consciousness and, well, I’ve sat down with Rich to talk in greater detail about that and a lot of other stuff. Ep. 171: Michael Cerveris (Broadway Actor/Musician) with co-host Stephen Bluhm

Ep. 171: Michael Cerveris (Broadway Actor/Musician) with co-host Stephen BluhmMichael Cerveris grew up in Huntington, West Virginia, the son of a college music professor father and a mother who taught dance.  They met at the famed Julliard Music School and raised their three children to follow their creative instincts in every direction. For Michael, that meant parallel roads in music and acting from his earliest years.Arriving in New York in the early 80’s, Cerveris fell in with the downtown and experimental theater crowd performing in raw spaces and storefronts, subletting an Alphabet City apartment from avant guard composer/pianist Blue Gene Tyranny and exploring the original east village punk and antifolk scenes while playing music mostly by and for himself. Early influences were bands like the Replacements and Pixies and Husker Du.An acting job on the television series Fame as british guitar student Ian Ware brought him to LA, where he began writing and playing and forming a series of bands during the heyday of the Scream Club and the british goth invasion in southern California. But after seeing the Smiths and a trip to England in the early 90s, Michael increasingly found himself influenced by Johnny Marr and early shoegazer bands like Ride and Slowdive with his own music becoming more melancholy and cinematic. In 1993, Cerveris returned to New York to make his Broadway debut as Tommy in the theatrical version of the Who’s groundbreaking rock opera. Pete Townshend not only approved his casting, but brought Michael to London. Telling him “I can’t teach you how to act this part, but I can teach you how to be a rock star,” Townshend brought Cerveris into his private studio to record on what was to become his Psychoderelict album, later bringing him along on the Psychoderelict Tour to sing a suite of songs from Tommy, causing Who fan Eddie Vedder to ask him “man, how do you sing like that 8 times a week?” Cerveris started a new acoustic/electric band, lame, with his cast mate Alice Ripley and began performing a late night residency at the Sin-e Club alternating nights with Jeff Buckley in the poet singer’s final months. He also ended up in clubs around town with Townshend (and, once, John Entwistle) playing impromptu shows at places like the China Club.Townshend also created an accidental introduction to Bob Mould when Cerveris brought the Who guitarist to see Mould play a solo show at the Academy in NY. A friendship developed and Bob sat in with Michael’s band for a cover of Mission of Burma’s That’s When I Reach For My Revolver. Later, in 1998, after Cerveris had finished his first stint as the “internationally ignored song stylist” title character in Hedwig And The Angry Inch (replacing the show’s creator, John Cameron Mitchell), Mould asked Cerveris to join his  Last Dog And Pony Show tour of the US and UK playing rhythm guitar and backing vocals. On that tour, Cerveris became good friends and sat in with tour mates Varnaline and Mercury Rev. During that tour and after, he made friends and played with Ken Stringfellow (Posies/REM), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Corin Tucker and Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney), Charlotte Hatherly (Ash), Frank Black, The Breeders, Steve Shelly (Sonic Youth), and Laura Cantrell, many of whom appear on his debut solo album Dog Eared. That album, released in February 2004 was recorded by Adam Lasus at Fireproof Studios, Brooklyn and was mixed by Nick Brine at Rockfield, Wales (where Cerveris had recorded an unreleased album, Hinterlands, with his then band, Retriever).  Greg Calbi mastered the album at Stirling Masters, NY2004 was also the year Cerveris received the first of his two Tony Awards, this one for playing John Wilkes Booth in Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins on Broadway. https://www.cerverismusic.comCreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer/Interviewer https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducerhttp://www.vintageannalsarchive.com

Ep. 170: Chris Cohen (Musician/Producer/ Deerhoof & Cryptacize)

Ep. 170: Chris Cohen (Musician/Producer Deerhoof & Cryptacize)Chris Cohen, born in Los Angeles in 1975, is an indie rock and psychedelic pop artist known for lush, introspective songs like “Damage” and “Laughing.” A former member of Deerhoof and Cryptacize, he’s released acclaimed solo albums including Paint a Room (2024). The Chris Cohen tour 2025 spans the US, UK, France, and Denmark.Chris Cohen’s songs initially sound easy. They’re each tiny jewels that unfurl at a leisurely pace, but dig a little deeper and you’ll reach a melancholy core. His previous albums — 2012’s Overgrown Path, 2016’s As If Apart and 2019’s Self Titled — were built from lush, blurry tracks that embedded themselves in your subconscious, like they’d always been there.

Paint a Room (out July 12, 2024) is his first album in five years and his debut for Hardly Art. If Cohen’s meanings have previously lurked inside the tessellated musical layers he built alone, they are newly clear and resonant here, animated and underscored for the first time by a band playing in real time. This is Cohen communicating with friends not only through his deep understanding of groove, harmony, and hook but also with his listeners through songs that croon of our uneasy little era.

Chris was a member of Deerhoof, The Curtains, Cryptacize and Natural Dreamers before releasing music under his own name. He’s toured and/or recorded with Kurt Vile, White Magic, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Danielson, Cass McCombs, as well as produced and engineered records by Weyes Blood, Fievel Is Glauque, Gun Outfit, Sam Evian, Marina Allen, Le Ren, and many more.  https://chriscohentour.comhttps://www.instagram.com/chrifcohenCreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comEpisode EditorsOtter Castro https://www.instagram.com/ottercastroRudy Fischmannhttps://www.instagram.com/onelastfisch

    Ep.169: Annie Golden (Singer/Actress)

Ep.169: Annie Golden (Singer/Actress) I had a great talk with Annie Golden. She is such a legend! We talked about her days with “The Shirts” and how Milo’s Forman discovered her at CBGB’s, and cast her in his film “Hair”. We got a bit into Sondheim and her decades long Broadway career, and talked about her connection with Joe Iconis (Be More Chill) who wrote a musical for her called “Broadway Bounty Hunter”. This was such an honor for a Broadway freak like myself. Golden began her career as the lead singer of The Shirts(which headlined CBGB's in the late 70s). During the early 1990s she performed as part of the duo Golden Carillo with Frank Carillo. They released three albums; Fire in Newtown, Toxic Emotion, and Back for More. She then returned to The Shirts. Since then she has performed solo and with a band. She performs a revue of songs from her stage career along with originals called Annie Golden's Velvet Prison. In 1984, her song "Hang Up the Phone" was featured on the soundtrack of the film Sixteen Candles. While with The Shirts she was discovered by Miloš Forman who gave her a part in Hair. She had featured roles on Cheers and Miami Vice. On Broadway, she has appeared in the 1977 revival of Hair, Leader of the Pack, Ah, Wilderness!, On the Town and The Full Monty. She had the title role in the workshop of the short-lived adaptation of Stephen King's novel Carrie. She also played the role of Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme in Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's musical Assassins Off-Broadway in 1990-1991. In 2003 she joined other original Off-Broadway cast members in a Reprise! (Los Angeles) concert production of Assassins. In 2007, she was stand-by for the two comic villain roles in the musical Xanadu on Broadway. Golden has the distinct honor of having appeared in three separate versions of Hair; a Broadway revival in 1977, the motion picture in 1979 and a special benefit performance concert in 2004. Golden was the voice of Marina in the Don Bluth film The Pebble and the Penguin. In recent years, she has been seen in commercials for Coinstar, in which she portrays The Tooth Fairy.CreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comEpisode EditorsOtter Castro https://www.instagram.com/ottercastroRudy Fischmannhttps://www.instagram.com/onelastfisch

Ep. 168: Andrew Fleming (Filmmaker) focuses on Hamlet 2, The Craft, and more..

Ep. 168: Andrew Fleming (Filmmaker) focuses on Hamlet 2, The Craft, and moreI had the privilege of chatting with Andrew Fleming who has directing a few of my favorite films including “Hamlet 2” and “Dick”. We focused more on “Hamlet 2” but got into much of his amazing work. Andrew Fleming is a highly accomplished director and screenwriter, most recently known for executive producing and directing the pilot of the hit Emmy-nominated Netflix series, Emily in Paris. A frequent collaborator of Darren Star, Fleming recently directed the pilot for Star's new series Uncoupled, starring Neil Patrick Harris. Fleming also directed the pilot and served as Executive Producer for Netflix's recent hit series Insatiable. In addition, he wrote and directed the 2018 feature Ideal Home starring Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan. Previously, he directed and co-wrote three films: Hamlet 2 (which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival), the political comedy Dick, (a satire about the Nixon Watergate scandal, starring Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, and Will Ferrell) as well as The Craft, starring Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell and Rachel True. For the independent feature Threesome (which also premiered at Sundance), Fleming served as both director and sole screenwriter. He directed the feature film Nancy Drew starring Emma Roberts, and before that the comedy The In-Laws, teaming Michael Douglas with Albert Brooks. Fleming studied filmmaking at New York University's film school, where P.P.T, one of his three award-winning student films, earned him a fellowship at Warner Brothers upon graduation.https://www.instagram.com/andymanfCreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comEpisode EditorsOtter Castro https://www.instagram.com/ottercastroRudy Fischmannhttps://www.instagram.com/onelastfisch

Ep. 167: Reverend Billy (Church of Stop Shopping/ Stop Shopping Choir)

Ep. 167: Reverend Billy (Church of Stop Shopping/ Stop Shopping Choir) About Reverend BillyThe character of Reverend Billy was developed in the mid 1990s by actor and playwright, William Talen.Talen grew up in small towns throughout Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. He left home at 16, moving east with Charles and Patricia Gaines, a writer and painter who encouraged him as an artist. Talen began to perform his poems and stories, hitch-hiking from Philadelphia to New York to San Francisco.Talen’s chief collaborator in developing the Reverend Billy character was the Reverend Sidney Lanier,  vicar of  St. Clement’s in the 1960s, an Episcopal Church in Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan. In an effort to increase attendance at St. Clement’s, Lanier had torn out the altar and pews, inviting actors to perform scenes from plays by his cousin Tennessee Williams and Terrence McNally, and founding the American Place Theater. Lanier described Talen as “more of a preacher with a gift for social prophecy than an actor.” In the early 1990s Talen moved with Lanier to New York City from the San Francisco Bay Area, branding his act as a “new kind of American preacher”The Reverend Billy character debuted on the sidewalk at Times Square in 1998, outside the Disney Store, where he proclaimed Mickey Mouse to be the anti-Christ. He was arrested multiple times outside the Disney Store, where he duct-tapped Mickey Mouse to a cross. Reverend Billy’s sermons decried the evils of consumerism and the racism of sweatshop labor, and what Talen saw as the loss of neighborhood spirit in Rudolph Giuliani‘s New York. The Reverend Billy character isn’t so much a parody of a preacher, as a preacher motif used to blur the lines between performance and religious experience. “It’s definitely a church service,” Talen explained but, he added, it’s “a political rally, it’s theater, it’s all three, it’s none of them.” Alisa Solomon, the theater critic at the Village Voice, said of Reverend Billy’s persona, “The collar is fake, the calling is real.” Along with the Church of Stop Shopping, they have been referred to by academics as “performance activism,” “carnivalesque protest,” and “artivists”https://revbilly.comhttps://www.instagram.com/revbillytalenhttps://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/vaapodCreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comEpisode EditorsOtter Castro https://www.instagram.com/ottercastroRudy Fischmannhttps://www.instagram.com/onelastfisch

Ep. 166: No One Asked You Documentary with Director Ruth Leitman

Ep. 166: No One Asked You Documentary with Director Ruth LeitmanI had the pleasure of interviewing Ruth Leitman. I was a huge fan of her documentary “Wildwood, N.J and it was an honor to chat with her in general. This documentary really opened my mind to the bad historical realities of the fight for the right to have abortions. The doc offers an important history lesson overall and especially in the past years on the fight to keep abortion legal. Ruth is an intelligent and thoughtful filmmaker and directing an amazing documentary. See link below to rent the film for $10!About the FilmComedian, disruptor-extraordinaire Lizz Winstead (co-creator of The Daily Show), and Abortion Access Front crisscross the U.S. to support abortion clinic staff and bust stigma. Pop culture icons and next-gen comics fuel this six-year road film activating small-town folks to rebuild vandalized clinics, exposing wrongdoer politicians, anti-abortion extremists, and media neglect as the race to the bottom ensues and our rights burn down. No One Asked You is a bold call to action driven by the power of humor in social change, where joy prevails. About Ruth LeitmanRuth Leitman has a BFA in Film and Photography from University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Through her company Ruthless Films, Ruth Leitman has directed six feature documentaries. Her films focus on women and those whose lives have faced a lack of opportunity, but who are survivors. Ep. 165: The Effigies (Chicago Punk)

Ep. 165: The Effigies (Chicago Punk) The Effigies are one of Chicago's oldest and longest-running punk bands. The band formed in early 1980 and consistently played and recorded throughout the 1980s. In 2004, The Effigies returned with 3 of the 4 original members. They released their first album in over 20 years in 2007. In 2010, it was announced that original line-up was to play a show at the Double Door to coincide with the reissue of the Busted At Oz compilation but this appearance was cancelled when original guitarist Earl Letiecq announced he had no intention of playing with his former band. After that, band activities ceased. On August 26, 2023, vocalist John Kezdy died from injuries he sustained after he collided with a parked Amazon delivery vehicle while he was bicycling. After his death, it was revealed that the band was in the process of planning new activity. In 2024, it was announced that the band would be releasing a new album along with a reissue of their first LP, "For Ever Ground". The band also announced a return to the stage, with the original rhythm section of Paul Zamost and Steve Economou joined by guitarist Andy Gerber and guitarist/vocalist Geoff Sabin.https://effigies.comCreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer/Episode Editor https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comRudy Fischmann - Body Episode Editor Instagram https://www.instagram.com/vintageannalsarchiveandpodcast

Ep.163: Heavyweight: A Family Story of The Holocaust, Empire, and Memory by Solomon Brager

Ep. 163: Heavyweight: A Family Story of the Holocaust, Empire, and MemoryBy Solomon Brager Ep. 163: Heavyweight: A Family Story of the Holocaust, Empire, and MemoryBy Solomon Brager A moving and provocative graphic memoir exploring inherited trauma, family history, and the ever-shifting understanding of our own identities, for readers of Gender Queer and I Was Their American Dream.Solomon Brager grew up with accounts of their great-grandparents’ escape from Nazi Germany, told over and over until their understanding of self was bound up with the heroic details of their ancestors’ exploits. Their great-grandmother related how her husband, a boxing champion, thrashed Joseph Goebbels and cleared beer halls of Nazis with his fists, how she broke him out of an internment camp and carried their children over the Pyrenees mountains. But that story was never the whole picture; zooming out, everything becomes more complicated.Alongside the Levis’ propulsive journey across Europe and to the United States, Brager distills fascinating research about the Holocaust and connected periods of colonial history. Heavyweight asks us to consider how the patterns of history emerge and reverberate, not as a simple chain of events but in haunting layers. Confronting the specters of violence as both historian and descendent, this book is an exploration of family mythology, intergenerational memory, and the mark the past makes on the present. In conversation with works by Rebecca Hall, Nora Krug, Rutu Modan, and Leela Corman, Heavyweight will contribute to the collective work of Holocaust studies and the chronicle of woven human stories.Solomon J Brager is the author of Heavyweight [William Morrow 2024] and other comics, a 2023-2025 Jerome Hill Artists Fellow, and a member of the Pinko magazine editorial collective.https://solomonbragerhttps://www.instagram.com/jbbrager/CreditsStephen Bluhm - Sound Engineer/Episode Editor https://www.stephenbluhm.funRich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comOtter Castro - Body Episode Editor Instagram https://www.instagram.com/vintageannalsarchiveandpodcast

Ep. 162: The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical with interviews with cast members.

Ep. 162: The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical with interviews with cast members.Let’s get wild in this exciting new musical about the infamous author from the mind of Joe Iconis (Be More Chill) and directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley (Come from Away).A collision of politics, counterculture and rock and roll in human form, Hunter S. Thompson is impossible to pin down. Careening from the 1940s to 2005, Thompson invents Gonzo journalism, attempts to take down a corrupt president, and quests for equality for his fellow weirdos, outsiders and freaks. However, this anti-hero’s drug-fueled tornado leaves a trail of destruction as he grapples with his legacy in a world that has left him behind.Funny and unique, as anarchic and irreverent as the writer himself, this explosive rock musical will spark a revolution for the rebel inside us all.“Funny, freaky, informal, fiercely independent… an emotional passing of the torch to the future activists of the world, a celebration of and a primal call to the freaks and misfits.” – San Diego Magazine‘s review of the original sold out production at La Jolla PlayhouseGeorge AbudNixonGeorge Abud is a proud Arab-American actor, director, and playwright. Ep. 161: Juanita & Juan (aka Alice Bag & Kid Congo Powers)

Ep. 161: Juanita & Juan (aka Alice Bag & Kid Congo Powers)I have to say that talking to Alice and Kid was one of biggest honors I’ve ever had in doing this podcast. The punk cred alone here is enormous! We talk about their friendship, music history, and how a song for a television show created this new amazing project! Juanita & Juan is the new musical duo formed by Alice Bag and Kid Congo Powers, two influential figures who first crossed paths in 1977 during the early days of the Hollywood punk scene. Their friendship, rooted in a shared passion for raw, boundary-pushing music, has lead to this new creative partnership that transcends genres and defies labels, though the two do refer to it as “loud lounge” and “punk folk”. The duo’s chemistry is undeniable, with their musical partnership serving as both a testament to their enduring friendship and the spirit of musical exploration that began for them in the early years of punk. https://juanitajuan.bandcamp.comhttps://juanitajuan.bandcamp.com/album/jungle-cruise

Ep. 160: Busman’s Holiday “Table Talk Album” and much more (live and unedited)

Ep. 160: Busman’s Holiday “Table Talk Album” and much more (live and unedited)I’ve known Addison and Lewis for around 17 years as I used to book music in West Philadelphia in the 2000’s and booked Busman’s Holiday a bunch of times. I stopped booking in 2009, but had such a good memory of their music, that over the years I’d kept tabs on them and would always listen to their new stuff. We reconnected a few months ago and finally got the opportunity to chat with them. It was good timing as “Table Talk” was just completed. This is one of my favorite albums I’ve heard in years. Their music just gets into your soul and makes you happy and hopeful. The songwriting just brings you into the wonderful places and experiences they write about. They explore folk, jazz, funk, and a lot of the production sounds like it was made in the 60’s and 70’s. It’s a great album to put on loud in your car and sing along to. I highly recommend you buy the vinyl or files as this is a band is highly worth supporting and it’s always hard to make a good buck in music with all the streaming services. I had a great fun chat with them and learned that they are highly influenced by film and also have also been doing comedy improv for years. Well rounded and interesting guys. About Busman’s Holiday Busman’s Holiday is a band of brothers from Bloomington, IN. After nearly two decades, their musical eras have been varied and adventurous. Recently the band has hitched their get-up to a funky rock’n’roll sound. Their sibling vocal harmony, catchy melodies, unexpected musical turns, and simple grooves will lift you higher. With an unparalleled  devotion to the craft Busman’s Holiday explores songwriting and making people feel good.Busman's Holiday: Table TalkIt's a live-to-tape studio record, capturing the essence of our full band with horns. Get up close and personal with this new Busman's Holiday classic.https://busmansholiday.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/busmansholidayhttps://open.spotify.com/album/7FBV5LdyvY8cGYv9RVeW7G?si=TMpMWWEjS12TJaMPW09duAFull BioA band of brothers hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, Busman’s Holiday are devoted to exploring the boundless possibilities of the human voice. On their inventive, giddily experimental third album, the aptly titled Good Songs, Lewis Rogers and Addison Rogers sculpt their lines rather than simply sing them, deploying an arsenal of techniques and tricks to deliver lyrics about loneliness and connection and joy and fulfillment. “In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, there was this revolution of people like the Beach Boys and the Beatles using their voices in the strangest ways,” says Lewis (the taller of the pair, with a John Prine style-moustache that gives him the look of a gunslinger). “We’re trying to pick up on that. You can have a million synthesizers, but the human voice can do something wilder and weirder than all that equipment.”Credits Rich WexlerProducer/Interviewer http://www.vintageannalsarchive.comOtter Castro - Body Episode Editor Instagram https://www.instagram.com/vintageannalsarchiveandpodcast
