Forced Joy and the Fight to Feel Again
Welcome back for another powerful and deeply personal episode of Wake the F*** Up podcast. Our host Alix Long sits down with Dana Frost, widow, caregiver, cancer survivor, and founder of the Forced Joy Project. Dana brings her full, unfiltered story to the table: from losing her husband Brad and father to cancer, to surviving her own diagnosis, and navigating what healing actually looks like when the trauma doesn’t stop coming.Dana challenges the myth that once you’ve hit rock bottom, nothing worse can happen. Nearly a decade post-loss, her nervous system still hasn’t "settled"—and she’s honest about the messy, non-linear path to healing. We talk about using wine as a coping mechanism, awkward dating app attempts, and a transformative cold water swim that cracked open the door to somatic recovery. She opens up about the burnout that came from creating grief-centered businesses without boundaries and how even purpose-driven work can become a beautiful distraction from our own pain. Dana also shares how it feels to love again, live fully, and wrestle with the guilt of joy in a world that expects widows to stay quiet in their grief. We also dive into her Book of Stories Project, an incredible initiative collecting personal stories from 50+ people who knew Brad—an emotional lifeline for grieving families, especially kids. Plus, Dana shares details on her upcoming retreats in Galapagos, Morocco, and Michigan, while Alix promotes her Mexico retreat this November for those looking to heal in community. If you’ve ever wondered what it means to rebuild after unthinkable loss—or how joy and grief can live in the same room—this one’s for you.Resources mentioned in this episode: Connect with Dana on Instagram @forcedjoyproject & @memorialbooksBook of stories website here - https://bookofstories.com/Forced Joy Project website here - https://www.forcedjoyproject.com/Follow Wake on Instagram: @thewakewellnessFollow Alix Long on Instagram: @alixlongwindedDownload the WAKE app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store

Body First, Heart Follows: Somatic Healing After Sudden Loss
In this episode of Wake the F*** Up, Alix Long sits down with grief coach, writer, and founder of New Moon Mira—Mira Simone—for a raw and soul-deep conversation about what it means to navigate profound loss while continuing to show up for life. Mira shares the story of her partner Brian's shocking and sudden death just seven weeks after his cancer diagnosis, and how that experience unraveled everything she thought she understood—even as a trained mental health occupational therapist.Mira unpacks the widespread misunderstanding around grief, including the myth that healing happens in a straight line. Instead, she insists, grief and joy aren’t opposites but companions, both expanding with us as we move forward. Parenting through grief, she says, is one of the most brutal, sacred paths—one where perfection is impossible, and self-compassion becomes a lifeline. Mira and Alix bond over the impossibly hard decisions they've had to make for their children in the wake of death, and the messy, real love that carries them through.Mira shares how she eventually came back to her body through somatic work, after initially resisting it for years. Her cold plunge breakthrough at the family cottage was a turning point, reawakening her nervous system and her ability to feel again. That healing inspired her to create a somatic grief course for others, addressing a massive gap in grief-literate practitioners who also understand the body’s role in trauma healing. What started as grief writing on Instagram has evolved into a full-scale business offering group support, retreats, and now the ICU Sister Community—an intimate platform for widows featuring live calls, workshops, and somatic video resources. Mira discusses how she continues to integrate Brian’s energy into daily life with her daughter, holding space for both mom and dad roles while focusing on pleasure, presence, and the simple joy of being alive.Follow Mira on Instagram and Facebook at @newmoonmira, and learn more about her grief offerings, including the ICU Sister Community and upcoming retreats.

Goodbye, My Heart: Healing After Pet Loss
In this episode of Wake the F** Up*, Alix Long is joined by writer and pet-loss advocate E.B. Bartels for an honest, tender, and unexpectedly uplifting conversation about what it means to love—and lose—our animal companions. With her book Good Grief: On Loving Pets, Here and Hereafter coming out in paperback in November 2024, E.B. shares how a few personal essays written during her MFA at Columbia led to years of deep cultural research into how we mourn our pets—and why it matters. No matter the culture or religion, grieving pet parents speak in the same terms: “unconditional love,” “my angel,” “my baby.” And yet, despite this shared experience, our society still undervalues the pain of pet loss—often minimizing it or rushing the grieving process. E.B. challenges that narrative by naming what many feel but rarely say: pet grief is real, deep, and often more immediate than the grief we feel for some people.Alix and E.B. both share personal stories that speak to the profound, sacred moments that can exist at the end of an animal’s life. Alix opens up about her boxer Layla, who held on through her husband Carl’s illness and passed peacefully at home from stomach cancer. E.B. recalls her dog Seymour’s final moments—his in-home euthanasia was the calmest he had ever been. These experiences aren’t just sad; they’re beautiful, even healing. And they’re reminders that, when it’s possible, death can be full of love, grace, and dignity. There’s also no one-size-fits-all timeline for opening your heart to a new pet. For some, it’s a matter of weeks. For others, years. What matters is honoring what feels right for your life, your grief, and your capacity to love again. E.B. and her husband have decided to wait until their toddler, Luca, asks for a dog—choosing to make space for the next companion when the time feels organic and mutual. What emerges through this conversation is a philosophy of love that’s rooted in presence. Animals teach us to be here now, to feel joy in small things, and to love without holding back. Yes, it ends. And yes, it’s still worth it. As E.B. says, we keep opening our hearts to new pets even when we know they’ll break them—because the love is just that good.Good Grief has become a beloved resource for people navigating the raw and often invisible grief of losing a pet. With the paperback release on the horizon, E.B. hopes to reach more people in more accessible ways—reminding us all that this grief is real, valid, and shared. This is a conversation about love, loss, and the quiet beauty of showing up fully—for our animals, and for ourselves.

When the Rocket Lands: A NASA Scientist’s Path to Purpose After Tragedy
In this inspiring episode of the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast, our host Alix Long sits down for a profound conversation with John Mollura—a former NASA test engineer turned award-winning photographer and personal development coach. We know our listeners are going to love hearing about John's journey of transformation, healing, and discovering the courage to redefine one's path. The conversation begins as John reflects on his 15-year tenure at NASA, where he led test operations for missions that landed on Mars. Despite his professional success, he struggled with impostor syndrome and a deep-seated fear of being unworthy. This internal conflict led him to hide his achievements and question his place in the world. His turning point came with the tragic loss of his best friend, Nathan, to suicide. As we know so well here at Wake Wellness, grief and loss can sometimes be the catalyst that allows us to awaken to who we truly are. This event forced John to confront his own emotional turmoil and reevaluate his life choices. He realized that his pursuit of perfection and external validation had been masking his need for emotional healing and authenticity. In his quest for personal growth, John applied the analytical skills honed during his engineering career to understand and manage his emotional responses. He learned to pause between stimulus and reaction, allowing for more thoughtful and intentional actions. This shift not only improved his emotional well-being but also transformed his relationships and sense of purpose.John's coaching philosophy centers on the idea that confidence is built through consistent action and bravery. He emphasizes the importance of self-trust and the courage to take risks, even in the face of fear. His approach encourages individuals to focus on their future selves and make choices that align with their true values and aspirations. We hope this episode gives our listeners fresh insights on themes of grief, healing, and personal transformation, as well as some tools for overcoming internal struggles and embracing a path of growth and self-discovery. John's story serves as a powerful reminder that healing is possible and that by honoring our losses and embracing our authentic selves, we can create a life of fulfillment and impact.ResourcesDiscover John’s Elite Level Action Playbook mentioned in this episode Visit John’s website https://johnmollura.com/Follow Wake on Instagram: @thewakewellnessFollow Alix Long on Instagram: @alixlongwindedDownload the WAKE app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Why Talk Therapy Isn’t Enough: Healing Trauma in the Body
In this powerful episode of the Wake the F*ck Up podcast, Alix welcomes somatic trauma practitioner Steph Harland, who shares her deeply personal journey into trauma healing following the loss of her father to complications from an autoimmune disease. Steph opens up about how his passing inspired her to work with women suffering from similar chronic conditions by addressing the unresolved trauma that often manifests in the body. Their conversation lays the groundwork for understanding the physiological effects of trauma and how nervous system dysregulation can lead to illness. The discussion moves into the emotional weight of grief and trauma, with both Alix and Steph reflecting on missed signs in their late loved ones. They explore the complex interplay between healing and loss, emphasizing that personal transformation often begins with awareness and a willingness to face difficult emotions.A major focus of the episode is on the body’s role in storing trauma. Steph explains that talk therapy alone can’t resolve deeply embedded trauma because much of it resides in the nervous system and subconscious body responses. Techniques like somatic tracking, breathwork (including her favorite “buzz breath”), and body awareness exercises are explored as powerful tools for breaking free from the chronic 'freeze' state often seen in those with autoimmune issues.Listeners are introduced to the concept of nervous system regulation through small, incremental practices that help rebuild trust and safety in the body. Steph and Alix share personal stories of how reconnecting with bodily sensations helped them heal, highlighting that the journey to joy can be just as challenging as navigating pain. Finally, the episode turns to the impact of trauma on relationships. Both speakers candidly examine how past wounds shaped their relational patterns and how somatic healing has allowed them to develop more honest, secure connections. They close with a reminder of the value in learning from loss, forgiving oneself, and choosing new, healthier paths—personally, physically, and emotionally.Resources: Follow Steph on Instagram @feelslikehealingDiscover somatic resources on Steph’s website Follow Wake on Instagram: @thewakewellnessFollow Alix Long on Instagram: @alixlongwindedDownload the WAKE app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Walking Between Worlds: Love Beyond Death
Welcome back to the Wake the F*ck Up podcast. This week we are walking between worlds as our host Alix interviews Natashia Mack, a small-town reverend and evidential psychic medium. The conversation kicks off as Natashia explaines the nuances of mediumship. She describes the full-body experience of “blending” with spirit and offers vivid insights into how spirits communicate through physical sensations, personality impressions, and unsearchable evidence. She also distinguishes between general anxiety and “spirit anxiety,” helping listeners understand how sensitivity may signal intuitive connection rather than fear.Natasha shares her recent battle with a rare cancer, describing the physical toll of 30 rounds of radiation and the profound inner transformation that came with it. She and Alix connect over the shared impact of cancer, revealing how proximity to death can awaken gratitude, compassion, and deeper purpose. In a powerful discussion on the afterlife, Natasha offers reassurance that our loved ones are not only at peace but remain connected to us. From witnessing her grandmother speak to spirit at the moment of death to explaining how spirits encourage the living to find joy again, Natasha brings comfort and clarity to the mystery of what lies beyond.Forgiveness also takes center stage, as Natasha explores how unresolved pain with the deceased can block our energy. She offers healing practices like letter-writing and sacred space creation, especially for parents guiding grieving children—who she describes as naturally intuitive and closest to spirit.Wrapping up the episode, Natasha discusses how to recognize signs from spirit—like sudden waves of grief, symbolic songs, and synchronicities—and encourages listeners to embrace them as messages of love. She highlights her upcoming virtual workshop, Is it Anxiety or Intuition?, and shares resources for highly sensitive individuals seeking to develop their intuitive gifts.Curious about connecting with spirit or developing your intuition? Untamed Hero: Escaping Abuse, Embracing Healing
In this soul-stirring episode of the Wake The F*** Up podcast, host Alix Long welcomes Katre Keinast, founder of Untamed Hero—a movement forged in the fire of abuse, loss, and radical self-reclamation. More than a survivor, Katre is a mother, a warrior, and a wellness advocate on a mission to help others heal, honor, and grow through their darkest seasons. Originally from Estonia, Kat moved to the U.S. at 17, chasing a new life but ultimately finding herself caught in a series of toxic relationships. What began as controlling behavior (phone checks, manipulation, suicidal threats), intensified into life-threatening abuse during and after her pregnancy. Her story, shared with powerful honesty, is a visceral reminder of how trauma takes root, how it isolates, and how escape often means leaving everything behind—except your will to survive. With her newborn son in her arms and only minutes to gather her life into a bag, Katre walked away from 16 years of her past. But the journey was far from over. Landing first in Utah and then back in Estonia, she faced the silent aftermath of survival: fear, insomnia, and the crushing weight of grief—not only for what was done to her, but for the version of herself she had to bury to stay alive. And yet, this is where her healing began.Throughout this conversation, Alix and Kat reflect on the way that grief is not just about death, but about loss in all its forms: loss of safety, identity, trust, and dreams. We found some incredible symmetry between Katre’s path and WAKE’s pillars:Heal Loss – through physical movement and the courage to face trauma head-onHonor Love – by embracing motherhood as both motivation and mirrorGrow from Grief – by transforming pain into purpose with Untamed Hero, her initiative to support survivors of narcissistic abuseAlix and Katre explore how wellness—true, whole-person wellness—is more than just surviving. It’s about rebuilding from the ground up: body, mind, and spirit. From CrossFit and somatic healing to the gaps in traditional therapy and the power of community, this episode doesn’t shy away from the messy, miraculous reality of growth after devastation.Katre reminds us that the journey through grief and trauma isn’t linear, and it isn’t clean—but it is deeply human. And through intentional healing, we can wake the f** up* to our worth, our strength, and our power to begin again.Follow Kat on Instagram: @untamedhero Visit her website: https://www.untamedhero.com/Follow Wake on Instagram: @thewakewellnessFollow Alix Long on Instagram: @alixlongwindedDownload the WAKE app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Redefining Loss with Marie Alessi
In this powerful episode of the Wake the F** Up* podcast, our host Alix Long sits down with best-selling author and TEDx speaker, Widow, and Grief Advocate Marie Alessi to explore her transformative journey through unimaginable loss. After the sudden death of her husband Rob from a brain aneurysm, Marie was faced with the impossible—and yet, she chose joy. Marie’s story also dives deep into the mysterious realm of intuition, sharing how her body and soul sensed the moment something shifted. It wasn’t just grief—it was a message, a knowing, a call to action.Marie opens up about her journey from Austria to Australia, where she met Rob just ten months after arriving. They built a beautiful life together, until everything changed in an instant when Rob died unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm while away on a business trip.Marie recounts the haunting premonition she had the night before his death—an intuitive knowing that something was terribly wrong. In the hours after receiving the devastating news, she heard Rob’s voice in her head saying, “Take the boys and create the happiest life possible.” That sentence became her North Star in the chaos of grief.Later in the interview, Marie reflects on the years leading up to Rob’s death, including a poignant “what if” conversation they had after hearing about another young father’s passing. That conversation unexpectedly prepared her to see grief differently—not as a final blow, but as something she could meet with love and strength. Here on the the Wake the F** Up* podcast, we like to challenge the typical perceptions of grief, and Alix and Mari’s conversation is a prime example of that. To Marie, grief doesn’t have to be a permanent identity focused on terms like “suffering,” “loss,” and “forever broken.” As Marie explains, grief can be a visitor, not a roommate. She emphasizes the importance of reshaping our words to reshape our experiences. By shifting the narrative, she’s been able to help others feel less isolated in their pain and more empowered in their healing.Connect with Marie on her website here - https://www.mariealessi.com/Check our Marie’s books - https://www.mariealessi.com/booksFollow Marie on Instagram - @marie.alessi.speakerFollow Wake on Instagram: @thewakewellnessFollow Alix Long on Instagram: @alixlongwindedDownload the WAKE app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Renegade grief-redefining the rules of grieving
One of the goals of the Wake the F*ck Up podcast is to bring to light the often taboo topics around death and grief. Today’s guest, Carla Fernandez, literally wrote the book on challenging these societal norms, with her new bestseller "Renegade Grief”. Carla Fernandez’s work focuses on how circles come together to foster collective care and change culture when a new status quo is called for. She is the cofounder of The Dinner Party, a national network of peer-support circles for young adult grievers, featured in The New York Times, NPR, Oprah Daily, and cited in multiple books. In addition to her work in grief, Carla partners with a range of clients through her community design studio as an impact strategist and facilitator, particularly on initiatives related to climate change, democracy, and the arts.In this interview, Carla shares her personal journey of losing her father to cancer at a young age, which inspired her to create The Dinner Party as a nonprofit that connects grievers aged 21 to 45 through informal gatherings. Alix and Carla delve into themes explored in Carla's new book, which challenges societal norms surrounding grief and highlights the importance of processing emotions like anger while navigating loss. Carla discusses the unique experiences and discussions that occur at Dinner Party gatherings, emphasizing that these meetings are not just about sadness but also fostering laughter and normalization of grief. Stick around the end of the interview as Carla shares her insights into The Dinner Party's guiding manifesto, which advocates for embracing the complexities of grief, what it means to thrive after loss, and invites listeners to engage with the community for support.Resources: Check out Carla’s new book - Renegade Grief - A Guide to the Wild Ride of Life after LossLearn more about the Dinner Party grief support networkLearn more about Carla on her website - https://www.carlafernandez.co/Follow Carla on Instagram @carlitafernandez Follow Wake on Instagram: @thewakewellnessFollow Alix Long on Instagram: @alixlongwindedDownload the WAKE app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Rebuilding the Brain with Dr. Brody Miller
In this powerful episode of the Wake the F*ck Up podcast, Alix sits down with Dr. Brody Miller, a brain injury survivor and Doctor of Natural Medicine who has built his career around helping others with holistic recovery from traumatic brain injury and promoting neurological well-being. Dr. Miller explains how trauma often starts as physical but becomes emotional, mental, and spiritual. He realized his impulsivity and poor decision-making were symptoms of frontal lobe damage, not moral failures. Despite doctors saying recovery wasn't possible, he discovered neuroplasticity, and went from having three grand mal seizures monthly to being seizure-free. You don’t want to miss the conversation between Alix and Dr. Miller around the idea that trauma occurs when choice is taken away, and healing requires reassembling a sense of choice.Later in the interview, Dr. Miller introduces trauma processing techniques such as 'memory reconsolidation' and shares practical recovery strategies, emphasizing natural dopamine boosters like movement and meditation. Together, Alix and Dr. Miller explore the emotional dimensions of trauma, and the importance of creating a new identity rather than seeking to return to the past. Wrapping things up. Dr. Miller encourages listeners to journal to identify patterns in their recovery. Despite the trauma and challenges, this conversation is really centered around a message of hope, encapsulating the idea that sometimes adversity can lead to transformative opportunities. Welcome back to the Wake the F*ck Up podcast. This week our host Alix sits down with Laura Walton, a licensed marriage and family therapist, grief coach, yoga instructor, and author, to explore the deep and often taboo subject of grief. Laura shares her personal journey of profound loss, including the suicide of her father when she was just 21, and the overdose death of her boyfriend at 26. These experiences have shaped Laura’s mission to offer better support for those navigating grief, particularly those grieving “difficult” losses that carry stigma, such as suicide and drug overdose.Throughout the conversation, Laura emphasizes the importance of allowing grief to be witnessed and giving space to the uncomfortable emotions that arise when we lose someone we love. Alix and Laura discuss how yoga and somatic practices—such as mindfulness, breathwork, and movement—can be powerful tools for healing, offering a safe space to process grief in both the body and mind. The discussion also delves into the challenges of grieving in a society that often doesn’t know how to handle such heavy emotions, particularly when it comes to “taboo” deaths that may be met with silence or judgment.Later in the episode, Alix and Laura share their personal experiences with grief and relationships, both old and new. They touch on the difficulties of integrating past losses into present-day connections, especially when dating after loss, and the unique dynamics of blending families after multiple tragedies. Grief on Purpose
In this brand new episode of the Wake the F*ck Up podcast, our host Alix sits down with Laura Walton, a licensed marriage and family therapist, grief coach, yoga instructor, and author, to explore the deep and often taboo subject of grief. Laura shares her personal journey of profound loss, including the suicide of her father when she was just 21, and the overdose death of her boyfriend at 26. These experiences have shaped Laura’s mission to offer better support for those navigating grief, particularly those grieving “difficult” losses that carry stigma, such as suicide and drug overdose. Throughout the conversation, Laura emphasizes the importance of allowing grief to be witnessed and giving space to the uncomfortable emotions that arise when we lose someone we love. Alix and Laura discuss how yoga and somatic practices—such as mindfulness, breathwork, and movement—can be powerful tools for healing, offering a safe space to process grief in both the body and mind. The discussion also delves into the challenges of grieving in a society that often doesn’t know how to handle such heavy emotions, particularly when it comes to “taboo” deaths that may be met with silence or judgment. Later in the episode, Alix and Laura share their personal experiences with grief and relationships, both old and new. They touch on the difficulties of integrating past losses into present-day connections, especially when dating after loss, and the unique dynamics of blending families after multiple tragedies. Alix and Laura have a shared vision for redefining grief—not as something to get over, but as an ongoing journey that can coexist with joy and new growth. As the episode wraps up, Laura introduces her upcoming book on yoga and grief, offering listeners an exciting glimpse into her work and inviting everyone to embrace their emotional experiences in whatever form they take. If you’re seeking new tools for emotional healing, you’re welcome to explore Laura’s website for widow resources. 5 Steps to Healing from Loss
Welcome back to the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast. This week Alix and David are excited to share a brand new framework we have been working on around healing loss with self-love. Using self love as a tool for healing your grief is a guiding principle of our work here at Wake Wellness. Like the grief cycle this is sequential but not always linear. Alix sat down with Dr. David to walk through the steps in a live podcast recording session. We’re sharing this 90-minute conversation in two parts, so be sure to turn back in next week for the next half of our conversation. We have received a ton of great feedback on our YouTube channel from listeners responding to David’s raw and unfiltered insights on male healing and this episode is no different. Listen as Alix walks David through the five steps of healing from loss, from shattering to returning to love. Step 1: Acute Onset of Shattering - David shares his experience of Betsy's sudden death. Alix and David share an insightful discussion about the different types of grief, from sudden loss to prolonged illness, and how they can impact people differently. You’ll also hear our hosts reflect on some of the more commonly known aspects of grief such as the shock and denial phases that often come immediately in the wake of major loss. David is sharing his grief process in these five steps but this framework can work for any of our listeners processing their grief and learning to heal with self love. Step 2: Going Inside - Next in the five steps of healing, David shares his struggle with old coping strategies. Discovering the importance of introspection and mindfulness is a key turning point in David’s journey, and as he shares with Alix, is was this phase of grief that led to his realization of needing professional help. Step 3: Trusting Yourself - David reflects on his experience with therapy and how it helped normalize his grief. David discusses the profound importance of professional help in his healing journey, and cites this as a critical tool for him to begin building self-trust, unlocking self-discovery and learning self-care. As Alix shares throughout this episode, this framework can work for any of our listeners processing their grief and learning to heal with self love. There are still two more steps for Alix and David to talk through so be sure to tune in next week for part two of this episode. Warning: It gets even more raw and more real as David shares his unfiltered emotions in processing these five steps with Alix. Rebirth Retreat EAT PRAY LOVE Recap Puerto Vallarta
EAT, PRAY, LOVE—these words have resonated deeply with many of us, a timeless reminder of life’s cyclical nature, its trials, and the possibility for transformation. As Alix and Dr. David Long take time off on maternity leave, a new chapter is unfolding for them, one that intertwines the complexities of loss, love, and new beginnings. In their absence, Cally Skye, Dionne, and Katie have arrived in Mexico to lead the Rebirth Retreat, a transformative experience designed to help individuals navigate grief, rediscover personal wellness, and reconnect with their deeper selves. It’s almost poetic, though entirely unintentional, that the circumstances surrounding the retreat mirror the very themes we explore here: life’s unpredictable nature, the paradox of joy and sorrow, and the beauty found in the process of healing. Alix and Dr. David Long, who both experienced the heart-wrenching loss of their previous spouses, are now embarking on a new chapter in their lives as not only a newly married couple but as parents for the sixth time. It’s a journey of profound resilience, as they blend together a blended family, much like the Brady Bunch, but through the lens of grief. As we begin our exploration in Mexico, Katie Coffee, an experienced grief mentor and wellness coach, leads us on an extraordinary journey to Puerto Vallarta—a town rich in culture, natural beauty, and deep spiritual significance. In this sacred space, participants in the Rebirth Retreat are encouraged to explore the complex layers of their grief, reclaim their personal power, and reconnect with their ancestral wisdom. Cynthia Corfah, a retreat participant, shares her deeply personal experience of how she connected with her ancestors during this journey, discovering not only the stories of those who came before her but also the strength and resilience that runs through her bloodline. Through guided meditation, nature immersion, and storytelling, she uncovered insights that have helped her heal and move forward in an empowered way. The Rebirth Retreat focuses on the healing power of grief—an understanding that grief is not something to be fixed or avoided, but a natural and transformative process that can lead to personal growth. By embracing grief, we unlock the potential for deep emotional and spiritual healing, allowing us to fully embrace life once more. Through a combination of wellness practices, mindfulness techniques, and grief mentoring, participants are supported in navigating their individual journeys toward healing, self-acceptance, and renewal. If you’re ready to embark on your own healing journey and discover how grief can lead to personal growth, we invite you to read more about Cynthia Corfah’s transformative experience here. Changing Your Narrative - Dionne' Story
We are excited to welcome a very special guest this week on the the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast. Dionne Eleanor is a relationship and empowerment mentor who creates transformative experiences that address the hidden barriers to well being. Dionne will be part of our WAKE Wellness Rebirth Retreat in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, November 2-9. She joins Katy on the podcast this week to answer some important questions about what you can expect to get out of a wellness retreat, and how to know when you need a retreat to help support your inner healing. Dionne will be part of our team leading a variety of therapeutic activities carefully curated to help you heal grief and trauma and awake to your true self. Dionne specializes in intergenerational trauma, ancestral trauma, grief, heartbreak, burnout, and all of these things that are not really addressed in typical wellness programs. Dionne calls these struggles “the silent drainers” and she has been working on retreats for more than twelve years, leading with techniques and tools to help support your physical and mental wellbeing. Dionne kicks off the podcast by sharing her diverse background and transformative journey from overcoming a spinal injury to becoming a mentor focused on sustainable wellness. Dionne and Katie discuss insights on wellness practices, including the importance of daily habits like meditation, reading, hydration, and yoga. Dionne’s advice: tap into your natural curiosity and invest in yourself every day. Dionne also warns our listeners about the signs of fear-based decision making: overthinking, seeking validation, and the classic physical sensations of stress and anxiety. Dionne encourages our listeners to look out for these signs and embrace mindful decision-making, rather than operating from a place of fear. Later in the podcast Katie and Dionne dive into what you can expect at this year’s Rebirth Retreat. Intention setting, meditation, movement (yoga, ecstatic dance) will all be part of your experience, tailored to help our guests reclaim lost parts of themselves. Workshops will focus on grief release, ancestral healing, limiting beliefs, voice and heart expansion. Finally, we’re answering some important questions about packing essentials. Dionne gives her recommendations for what to wear, what shoes you might need, and essential items you’ll want to bring along to maximize your enjoyment of the retreat. Top of the list: SPF, sunglasses, your passport, and your favorite thermos or water bottle (hydration is key). As we wrap up the podcast, you’re invited to reach out with any questions. We want this to be a safe, open-minded environment for everyone involved, and we are so excited to have Dionne leading some of our programming and bringing her expertise to our retreat. Cally also shares her insights on how perfectionism is the enemy of authenticity and that by allowing yourself to be misunderstood you can stand in your truth and embrace your authentic self. Cally says one of the ways people can benefit from a wellness retreat is by tuning out the noise so that you can really tune into yourself again. This is likely the most unplugged that you're going to be through the whole year, and this is an opportunity to give yourself that permission to say, “I don't need the outside world right now. It'll be there when I get back. It'll always be there. It'll always be loud.” Going on a retreat gives you the chance to examine what happens when you turn down the noise of the outside world and ask yourself “What do I hear when I'm quiet and when I'm still, like, what is actually true? What voice is mine, and what voice is an ex partner or, like, a bad friend, maybe? Whatever it might be.” We hope you’ll join us on the WAKE Rebirth Retreat to discover the answers to those questions. You don’t want to miss the deep insights from Cally and Katie as they each discuss their own personal intentions for the retreat this year, and the emotional struggles they are hoping to release and heal from through this experience. Cally also shares how she will be bringing her musical talents to the retreat, playing flute as part of the relaxation and meditation ceremonies. Plus, Callie demonstrates a simple breath work technique and shares her approach to sound meditations during retreats. The key takeaway here is the importance of slowing down and being present The WAKE Wellness Rebirth Retreat is just a few weeks away. We hope you’ll join us in Puerto Vallarta November 2-9. Grief Coaching and a Widow’s Journey to Healing
This week on the Wake the F*ck up Podcast we share a widow’s journey to healing. Amanda Kurtz sits down with Katie to share the story of how she lost her husband in April 2023 to Stage Four stomach cancer. They had been together for more than 11 years, and had just gotten married in January 2023. In this episode, Amanda shares her poignant journey of grief following her husband’s death so shortly after their wedding. She reflects on the profound impact this experience had on her mental health, her role as a parent to her 15-year-old son, and the importance of setting personal boundaries during such a challenging time. As you’ll hear in this episode, Amanda feels a strong calling to become a grief coach and help others who have been through her same journey. If you are a frequent WAKE podcast listener then you already know we highly recommend therapy as a tool for healing from grief. Amanda shares how she started therapy two weeks after Eric’s passing, and took a mental health leave from work to prioritize her well-being and support her son. She emphasizes how crucial it is to allow yourself to feel all the emotions deeply and completely during your grief journey, and encourages listeners to monitor their loved ones for changes, particularly teenagers, as they navigate their own grief. Later in the episode, Amanda discusses how living in a small community where her husband was well-known presented unique challenges, especially when it comes to the potential for dating again. Amanda shares her thoughtful approach to this delicate situation, including how she symbolically changed her jewelry to reflect her family's current dynamic. She speaks candidly about the complexities of introducing someone new to her son and the cautious optimism she feels about re-entering the dating world. Professionally, Amanda works as a health record ambassador, a role that brings its own emotional burdens, particularly when dealing with do-not-resuscitate orders, or DNRs. A DNR order is a medical order written by a health care provider. It instructs providers not to do CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) if a patient's breathing stops or if the patient's heart stops beating. These are complex and emotional topics, and they can be very hard to deal with in the moment of a health crisis. Amanda highlights the importance of having early discussions about end-of-life decisions, advocating for proactive conversations to ease the burden on families during difficult times. As Amanda tells us, losing Eric helped her connect more deeply with her authentic self, and also helped her see more clearly the true nature of others around her. Looking ahead, Amanda shares her aspirations to become a grief coach and establish a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting young widows and widowers. Are you healing from loss or grief? ICYMI - What to Expect 5 Years After Their Death
The WAKE team is busy working on some exciting new content for you! We can't wait to share updates from Alix and David, a preview of our upcoming Rebirth Retreat, and insights from special guest experts. That's all coming up soon on the Wake the F*ck up Podcast. While our team works behind the scenes on new episodes, we wanted to re-share this special episode from Alix and David - Five Years Without Carl: The Journey of Grief and Remembrance. We hope that this message connects with you as deeply as it has with all of us. >>>>>>>>>>>> Welcome back to a very special episode of the Wake the F*ck up Podcast. Our hosts Alix and David sat down to record this episode barely a week before Alix’s due date with their baby girl. It has been a very emotional month as they prepare to welcome this new life, while Alix also marks the five year anniversary of the death of her first husband Carl. Throughout this episode Alix shares her personal experiences with grief. She kicks off the episode with an insightful metaphor comparing coffee to grief. The metaphor illustrates how much can unknowingly occur in loss, and how your routines and habits, both big and small, get completely disrupted after loss. As Alix points out, grief affects even the simplest daily activities. Alix and David also share their experiences with the difficulties involved in making end-of-life decisions, and the guilt and regret that can come during the final days of a loved one’s life, and persist long after they are gone. Later in the podcast Alix and David explore the topic of legacies left by loved ones, and the choice to live and rebuild life after loss. The idea of legacy is not just about your professional life or your work, but also about the influence you may have on your friends and family. Every person’s grief experience is different. This podcast episode takes a deep look at grief as a complex journey of self-discovery, emphasizing the importance of self-love. If you are a regular WAKE podcast listener then you know challenges like guilt and anger are common, and it’s incredibly important to seek out resources, self care, and support for your grief journey. As Alix marks 5 years since Carl’s death, the key takeaway of this episode is that while grief evolves and integrates into life, honoring the memory of those we've lost remains a vital part of moving forward. Alix wraps up the episode by encouraging our podcast listeners to cherish every moment with the people you love. Are you healing from loss or grief? Releasing Self Doubt through Embracing Forgiveness
If you’re curious about what to expect on a wellness retreat and what you might get out of it, you’re going to want to dive into this week’s episode of the Wake the F*ck up Podcast. Guest host Katie Coffee welcomes special guest Cally Skye, our resident expert in breath work, yoga, trauma release and empowerment. Cally will be lending her skills and insights to our WAKE Wellness Puerto Vallarta Rebirth Retreat coming up in November. Today she joins us on the podcast to talk about all the experiences you can expect at the retreat. To kick off the podcast, Katie and Cally dive into a little bit of background about Cally’s career journey, including past experiences with toxic relationships, emphasizing the importance of self-discovery and healing. Cally shares how she initially got into breath work and why she decided to pursue a career of helping people heal and take better care of their wellbeing, both physically and emotionally. Cally also shares her biggest takeaway from last year's WAKE retreat and the lasting impact that she has experienced. Later in this episode, Katie and Cally explore questions about why it’s so hard for us to let down our walls around other people, and the impact that generational trauma can have on your psyche. What voice is mine, and what voice is an ex partner or, like, a bad friend, maybe? You don’t want to miss the deep insights from Cally and Katie as they each discuss their own personal intentions for the retreat this year, and the emotional struggles they are hoping to release and heal from through this experience. Healing from Loss in 5 Steps - Part 2
Welcome back to the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast as we pick up part two of our special two part episode sharing our new Wake Wellness framework around healing loss with self-love. As you heard in last week’s episode, healing your grief using self love is a guiding principle of our work here at Wake Wellness. Alix sat down with Dr. David to walk through the five steps in a live podcast recording session and we shared the first three steps with you on last week’s episode. This week we pick things up with the fourth step, as Dr. David shares his raw and unfiltered insights on male healing from shattering to returning to love. Step 4: Choosing Yourself - David shares details about the conscious decisions he made in his healing after beginning therapy. This discussion highlights the importance of self-care and making choices for oneself as part of the healing journey. Alix also emphasizes the role that societal expectations can play in grief and healing, and how to let go of those expectations and prioritize your personal needs Step 5: Return to Love - This is the fifth and final step in our Wake framework for healing loss with self love. Alix and David dive into an emotional conversation about returning to love after loss. Our hosts share their unique and personal insights on the importance of self-love and connection, and discuss the ways that healing requires you to face the challenges and fears associated with loving again. As Alix shares throughout this episode, this framework can work for any of our listeners processing their grief and learning to heal with self love. Healing from loss is a journey, one that requires patience, self-compassion, and a deep commitment to self-love. By embracing these five steps—feeling the abandonment, going inside, trusting yourself, choosing yourself first, and returning to love—you can navigate through your pain and emerge stronger, more resilient, and more connected to your true self. Remember that like the grief cycle, the healing process is sequential but not always linear, and each step forward is a testament to your strength and capacity for love. ICYMI - Healing from loss in 5 steps
Welcome back to Wake the F*ck Up with Alix and David. Our team is busy working on exciting new content for you, and in the meantime we wanted to re-run one of our most popular episodes this week. This episode blew up on Spotify and we got a ton of great feedback from our listeners. In case you missed it, this episode shares our brand new Wake framework - Healing From Loss in 5 (not so easy) Steps. We hope you love hearing about this methodology and find it to be helpful and useful in your grief journey. We'll be back with new episodes next week and we can't wait to share what's next. >>> Welcome to the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast. We hope you’ll join us and continue to find these tools useful and helpful in your journey through loss and grief and into self love. Loved this episode? When Life Hands You Complex Medical Trauma
It’s a big week on the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast as we welcome back our hosts Alex and David after a few weeks off for Alix’s Fetoscopic ablation to resolve Vasa Previa. As Katie and Andrew shared on our podcast last week, the procedure was a success and Alix and baby are healthy and doing great. You’ll want to hear this episode as Alix and David share their journey as a couple through this difficult time, as both of them are no strangers to medical trauma. After Alix shares updates on the successful but emotionally challenging procedure, she and David explore the impacts of medical trauma on both patients and caregivers. There are two big takeaways here, it’s important to stay informed and ask questions during a medical crisis. It’s also essential to have your own effective coping strategies in order to deal with medical trauma. Tools we talk about all the time on the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast such as breath work and visualization can be instrumental in processing grief and trauma associated with a medical crisis. Alix also reflects on feelings of abandonment in past medical experiences and the importance of processing emotions. Meanwhile, David shares his insights and experiences as the spouse and caregiver before and after Alix’s Fetoscopic ablation procedure. And finally, Alix and David are here to remind our podcast listeners of the significance of self-care and healing after any trauma and especially after a medical procedure. That conversation is a perfect segway into our last topic of the episode, which is a sneak preview of our upcoming WAKE retreat in Mexico. Everything about the Puerto Vallarta Rebirth Retreat (November 2-9) has been thoughtfully designed to foster personal connection and well-being through a variety of therapeutic activities carefully curated to help you heal grief and trauma and awake to your true self. Anxiety and ADHD - The Dynamic Duo
Welcome back to the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast. This week Alix and Dr. David Long are taking a break from podcasting as Alix recovers from a successful Fetoscopic ablation to resolve Vasa Previa. Here at WAKE we are so happy and thankful that the procedure was a success, and so proud of our courageous leader Alix and the resilience she has shown during this challenge. While Alix remains on 2-3 weeks of bed rest before the arrival of their sweet baby girl, Wayne Taylor and Katie Coffee are guest-hosting the podcast. As a follow up to our episode about anxiety last week, Wayne and Katie dive into the subject of ADHD this week, and explore how these two concepts are related. If you suffer from one or both of these conditions, you already understand the connection. Katie offers an informative and insightful perspective on living with ADHD, outlining its causes, symptoms, and the societal stigmas that go along with this often-misunderstood condition, particularly emphasizing gender differences in diagnosis. As Katie says, having a better understanding of ADHD can help in fostering supportive interactions for people in your life living with this condition. She mentions a few books she’s enjoying right now, we’ll link to those as well as some resources in the show notes below. From there, Katie and Wayne shift the conversation to goal setting. The key takeaway here - small, actionable goals can be a lot more manageable than broad ambitions. Our hosts discuss what setting achievable goals means for them, while underscoring the importance of self-acceptance and enjoying the process. Stick around for the end of the episode because you don’t want to miss our sneak preview of the upcoming WAKE retreat scheduled in Puerto Vallarta from November 2-9, 2024. The Power of Letting Go: Surrendering Amidst Turmoil
This week on the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast, Alix and David take a deep dive into how self love can help you recover from loss, by teaching you to trust yourself and build resiliency. Our hosts walk through their experiences with anxiety, fear, perfectionism, mindfulness, coping strategies, self-trust, and boundaries. You don’t want to miss a moment of this insightful episode as Alix and David share their personal experiences and reflections, with a focus on self-love and surrendering. First, David kicks off the discussion with his personal insights on anxiety and fear, and how it affects daily life. We want our listeners to know that they’re not alone in their anxiety! Most people are basically anxious, and very few have learned to let go of their daily anxiety and find true peace and mindfulness. If you’ve ever thought about how you process the chaos around you, from news media to thriller movies, you’ll want to hear what David has to say on this subject. Alix also shares her experience with bed rest and the challenges it brings. Next our hosts delve into the subject of perfectionism and self-love. Calling all current and recovering perfectionists! This discussion is for you. Did you know that perfectionism is rooted in fear and anxiety? David explains the concept of asymptotic perfection and its unattainability. And Alix talks about the importance of self-love and trusting oneself. The subject of perfectionism segues naturally into mindfulness and body awareness. If you listen to the Wake the F*ck Up Podcast often you already know that mindfulness practices are so so important for your mental and emotional wellbeing. David shares his struggle with mindfulness and the difference between practice and reaction. Meanwhile, Alix explains the concept of body habitus and how it reflects one's inner state. One way to help yourself through times of deep anxiety or grief is by supplying yourself with tools and coping strategies for resilience. David shares his experience with dissociation and its impact on his life. He also talks about how helpful it can be to have actionable items you can use as effective coping strategies. In this same vein, Alix talks about the importance of somatic work and grounding exercises. If you’re trying to work on self-trust and setting boundaries, you’ll want to stick around for the end of the podcast. No spoilers here, but Alix shares her mantra for self-trust and its significance. And David talks about the challenges of letting go and the process of surrendering. What to Expect After Losing “Your Person”
Welcome back to Wake the F* Up! Our theme for July is "The Aftermath of Loss and What to Expect in Grief." The early stages of loss hurt so damn bad because most of us live our lives without embodiment or awareness. You've been living with a focus that has nothing to do with what matters to you, and you are filled with regrets and sorrow. Whether you are going through a divorce, the death of a spouse, the end of a relationship, the loss of expectations, losing yourself, betrayal, or even moving to a new place, grief accompanies the farewell to what once was and ushers in a new path toward acceptance. In this episode, David delves into the healing process – one of our favorite topics here on Wake the F*ck Up. Alix and David share their experiences with grief, discussing what you can expect when faced with such profound loss. When you experience the death of someone deeply connected to you, it often forces a stark realization of how much you missed by living in a state of distraction. Although we might appear awake, our daily actions are frequently driven by external demands, aiming to please others and avoid past failures. In this state, we strive to be what we think others want us to be. However, when faced with soul-crushing loss, such as death, your world fundamentally shifts. You may have spent years trying to be the "good" version of yourself, but loss pushes you beyond those boundaries, often leaving you feeling isolated from the outside world. You might be tempted to revert to societal norms, but true healing begins when you reconnect with your body and acknowledge its wisdom. This evolution starts with the metaphorical death of everything you once knew, which is deeply painful as it reveals the truth: all suffering stems from abandoning ourselves in our quest to be loved and connected to others. Yet, through this shattering experience, we learn that healing begins by returning to our true selves. Fiercely loving ourselves prevents further loss and paves the way for a new life. Awake Men: Embracing Emotional Masculinity
This week on Wake the F*ck Up we have a very special episode for you. David Long hosts a men's roundtable discussion, bringing together three men with diverse perspectives and backgrounds to share their unique insights on living consciously, mindfulness, waking up, authenticity and vulnerability. Meet Our Men! Earl Hagans: Earl is from New Orleans and is a formerly incarcerated person. During the roundtable, he shares how that experience has shaped his life and what it means to him. Lou Relayson: Also from New Orleans, but a current resident of New York, Lou is a trans person. He shares his experiences with self-actualization, mental illness, divorce, and the sometimes-ugly but always-worth-it fight to live his life authentically. Andrew Wayne Taylor: Andrew is a full-time digital media creator, editor of Wake the F*ck Up and yoga and breathwork enthusiast. No topics are off limits as David sits down with our guests to discuss masculinity and the role male models had in each of their lives (or lack thereof) as well as emotional awareness and vulnerability. David asks the guests if there was a defining moment that caused them to become more “awake” and emotionally aware. You’ll have to tune in to hear the emotional and raw stories and insights from our guests on this topic. From addiction and mental illness to grief and loss, we cover a wide range of life journeys and experiences. Next, David gets into healing – one of our favorite subjects here on Wake the F*ck Up. David, Lou, Earl and Andrew each share the tools and resources they use to practice mindfulness and support their mental health. From therapy to yoga, breathwork and meditation, we loved hearing each of our guests’ different answers on this topic. Later in the episode, our host leads a discussion on interpersonal relationships, emphasizing the importance of communication for successful interpersonal relationships. David and the guests share how they have each come to learn better communication skills, what prompted them to become interested in learning about communication, and the tools and strategies that have been successful for them. David caps things off with a reflection on how each of our guests represents a different generation and perspective, but they all had a lot on common when it comes to living consciously and authentically. Men are Struggling to Feel Generations after World War II
Welcome back to Wake the F* Up!** Our theme for June is Man Month. Alix begins with a heartfelt apology for interrupting, underscoring the importance of respect and humility in conversations about grief and loss. Dr. David shares a good laugh with Alix on this as they both acknowledge their roles as loss experts. David offers a profound exploration of the male role as a provider, tracing its roots back to the generational trauma from WW2. He discusses how these historical events have shaped contemporary expectations and the internal conflicts men face between financial responsibility and emotional engagement. For longtime WAKE listeners, the episode reiterates the detrimental effects of shame and abusive family dynamics on men's ability to be vulnerable. The discussion emphasizes the need for breaking these cycles to foster healthier emotional expressions. We cover: Generational Trauma from WW2: We examine how the aftermath of World War II has left a lasting impact on male psychological health and familial dynamics. Emotional Awareness: The importance of men recognizing and articulating their emotions, breaking free from traditional stoic norms. The Pressure on Males to Provide: Analyzing the societal expectations that men face as primary providers and the emotional toll this responsibility can take. Alix's Pregnancy Update & Hospital Stay: A personal look into Alix's journey, highlighting the intersection of personal health and professional life. The Dichotomy of Financial vs. Emotional Provision: Discussing the often-overlooked aspect of men providing emotional support alongside financial stability. The Growing Acceptance of Therapy and Mindfulness Practices: Exploring how men are increasingly embracing therapeutic practices despite the generational trauma that discourages vulnerability. In addition to this episode, Man Month will feature a series of engaging content projects. One of the highlights is a men’s roundtable, where diverse masculine perspectives will be brought to the forefront. This roundtable aims to provide a platform for men to share their experiences, challenges, and strategies for emotional growth. Stay tuned to the WAKE podcast throughout Man Month for deep dives into these crucial topics. What’s Going On In His Head? Inside the Male Psyche
Welcome back to Wake the F*** Up! Our theme for June is Man Month, in honor of Father’s Day on June 16 (U.S.). This week Alix sat down with David for a Q&A to share an inside look at the male psyche, emotions, and consciousness. Thank you so much to our listeners who sent in questions. This episode covers everything from: Societal expectations of men Emotional awareness The impact of fear and love on emotional health The significance of direct communication in relationships The innate drive of men to provide and protect The growing acceptance of therapy and mindfulness practices among men David kicks things off by explaining that his thoughts on masculinity are continually evolving. He also shares his feelings on the male dynamic as a provider, being and feeling responsible for both money and stability, and his fear, going back to his first marriage, that if he did not provide adequately he would be unlovable. Longtime WAKE listeners know that fears of being unlovable are a common thread in our podcast episodes. Our listeners sent in some great questions. You’ll have to listen to the podcast to hear David’s answers: Do you think men need women to open the door for emotional conversation? Who did you learn your masculinity from? How do you think the idea of masculinity has evolved from your dad's generation, to your generation, to your children's generation? Do you feel you need to start your day mindfully? How do you start your day? Is this something that you're knowing you need mindfulness? Have you always started your day mindfully? Do you think that masculinity means solving your own problems without asking for help? What does it mean to be masculine to you? Do you think men hate feeling? Think about the feelings you feel versus the feelings you choose to express as a man. What is the difference? Why is there a disconnect? How do you choose when to feel and express feelings? Keep listening to the WAKE podcast all “Man Month” long for deep insights into the emotional lives of men. We have a lot of exciting content projects planned this month, including a men’s roundtable to bring in a variety of different masculine perspectives. Father-daughter grief dynamics with Dr. David and Katie Long
Welcome back to the Wake the F*** Up podcast! Our team is busy working on some great new content, and this week we wanted to replay one of our favorite past episodes, which we think is perfectly timed for Father’s Day coming up in the U.S. This episode is hosted by Dr. David Long and features a very special guest, David’s daughter Kate Long. We hope you enjoy this powerful episode about father-daughter grief dynamics, the complexities of parent-child relationships, and how families can help each other heal. We’ll be back next week with all new content, and we have some exciting plans coming up for “Man Month” throughout the month of June, combining Father’s Day with a deep dive into the male psyche. Stay tuned! ICYMI - It’s Okay to Not Be Okay After Losing my Mom This week on Wake the F*** Up, David’s daughter Kate Long joins her dad on the podcast for an intimate conversation about life after losing her mom, her experience in living with grief as a young person, and the challenges and joys of belding families as Alix and David started their relationship. Kate is David’s eldest child, she’s 19 and currently a freshman at UT Austin, studying Mechanical Engineering. We are so glad Kate asked to be on the podcast because this father-daughter conversation offers such a unique grief perspective. Diving in, David and Kate talk about some of the different ways that losing Betsy affected them and their whole family dynamic. They discuss the challenges of living authentically and dealing with transitions while processing a major loss. David shared his journey of self-exploration, no longer pretending, and Kate acknowledges the similar pressures she was feeling during this period. The key takeaway here: it’s okay to not be okay. Later in the episode, Kate shares how hard it is to be authentic in relationships after a big loss at young age, and how she’s looking for real connections, but many of her peers are in a different place emotionally because they haven’t experienced grief the way she has. Next we dive into the transformative power of therapy! Kate discussed how going to therapy helped validate her emotions and help her cope with anxiety. They explore the benefits of therapy in normalizing emotions and improving communication skills within relationships. Kate shared how therapy helped her recognize patterns and manage intense feelings. David and Kate wrap things up talking about the importance of reaching out for support, and using different coping mechanisms that work for you. We hope you enjoy this deep father-daughter conversation about grief and living authentically. Thank you, Kate, for sharing your experience with the Wake podcast audience! A Second Chance At Love - The Beginners Guide To Widowed Dating
This week on Wake the F*** Up, Alix and David sit down with Abel Keough, a remarried widower who has successfully helped thousands of women know if the widowers they’re dating are ready for a serious relationship. Before we dive in to the rest of the episode, we want to give a content warning that this episode contains discussions about suicide as well as infant loss; topics which may be triggering to some of our listeners. Feel free to skip this episode if you need to, or come back when you’re ready. To kick off the conversation, Abel shares his personal experience as a remarried widower and discusses his work in helping women navigate relationships with widowers. He has written several books, including “The Wife in the Next Life” and “The Ultimate Dating Guide for Widowers,” and hosts a YouTube channel (@DatingaWidower) full of helpful resources for the widower community, many of which have resonated with Alix. The three move on to discuss the challenges faced by young widowers, the lack of resources available to them, and the importance of setting boundaries with friends and family during the grieving process. Later in the podcast, Abel shares his story of losing his pregnant wife to suicide and navigating life after her death. He talks about finding support systems that are understanding and helpful, as well as finding ways to cope with grief such as running or journaling. The conversation also touches on topics like loneliness in grief, shame around suicide deaths, redefining relationships after loss, and starting to date again. Abel emphasizes that there is no specific timeline for when someone should start dating again but cautions against getting into serious relationships too quickly before being emotionally ready. He also advises open communication about dating with family members in order to avoid feelings of betrayal or mistrust later on. Alix and David can relate! Both hosts share their own experiences with anger towards their late spouses and discuss how they worked through it over time. Abel is the author of four dating guides, a memoir about losing his late wife to suicide and falling in love again, and co-author of a book with his wife, Julianna, about the struggles and questions they had to overcome to take their relationship from dating to marriage. His Dating a Widower YouTube channel contains over 200 videos and valuable advice for widowers and the women who are dating or married to them. Mother Wounds and Generational Trauma
Throughout the month of May, we’re releasing new episodes of the Wake the F*ck Up podcast that are all about mother-child relationships, mothering, the mother wound, and how the experiences you have as a child with your mother or parents can have a huge impact on your attachment style and the relationships you have as an adult. This week, our hosts Alix and David sit down to discuss a wide range of relationship topics including: Avoidance, especially conflict avoidance Suppressed emotions. Unresolved issues with family, generational trauma Difficulty trusting others Chronic stress and physical health issues Overgeneralized beliefs and survival messages Strategies for relationship success Alix kicks things off by addressing some of the most asked questions from our Wake listeners, including “How do I know if I have a generational trauma? What is a generational trauma and how can I heal from that?” Through a traumatic experience (whether inside or outside the home) a person develops fears and survival skills to protect themselves. As each generation follows, these very same survival skills and fears are passed on from parent to children. It’s a complex emotional story that can be hard to untangle, because by the time it comes to you, it can be three to four (or more!) generations deep, following these same thought processes and survival patterns. Generally, people feel very strongly about the thought patterns established generationally, so they can be very defining characteristics. Survival skills and fears that are passed down through generations may show up in a variety of different ways, like trust issues, codependency, perfectionism, conflict avoidance or suppressed emotions. Alix and David delve into a discussion about how generational trauma can have a profound effect on family dynamics, particularly focusing on parent-child relationships. The conversation highlights the challenges faced in breaking free from inherited patterns passed down through generations. Alix and David wrap up talking about ways to heal and break the cycle. For generational trauma, seeking therapy, engaging in somatic work, and reframing perceptions are all tools and resources you can use to address and overcome generational traumas. Breaking free from multi-generational trauma can be hard, and we encourage our listeners to seek out therapy to unravel deeply ingrained behaviors, as well as use other tools and resources to properly heal. At the end of this episode, Alix and David talk about their commitment to break the cycle of trauma for future generations, acknowledging that it takes a lot of work, but it’s an opportunity to heal yourself in the process. Mother Wounds: The First Cut Is The Deepest
Throughout the month of May, Alix and David are discussing psychological and emotional topics related to motherhood and mother-child relationships. This week on the Wake the F*** Up Podcast our hosts take a deeper dive into the concept of Mother Wounds, examining their impact on individuals, particularly in relationships. Alix opens the episode with a question from a listener following last week’s episode on attachment styles, “How do I know if I have a Mother Wound? What are the signs?” Alix defines the phrase Mother Wound as “Anything that happened to you in your childhood that was imprinted by your mother and her inability to meet all your emotional needs. If a Mother Wound is severe enough it can create an attachment style or an attachment disorder. A mother wound is like an imprint on your body and it manifests in your deep psyche.” Alix discusses how so many of the rooted problems that we have in our life come from an inner child wound, whether from your father or your mother or any caregiver. Also recognizing that no parent is perfect and it’s neatly impossible to walk the path of a caregiver and not create some kind of mother wound along the way. Alix and David discuss signs of mother wounds, such as being a perfectionist or a people pleaser. These likely begin in your childhood because you’re seeing the approval of your mom, but these wounds can manifest in adulthood in unhealthy ways. Mother wounds can have a detrimental impact on self-worth, relationships, and well-being. Later in the episode Alix and David share advice and insights on how to address and heal from mother wounds. Our suggestions include: Recognizing and understanding codependent patterns Setting boundaries Practicing self-awareness to acknowledge past traumas Self-care practices and somatic work for healing Seeing therapy to address wounds and learn coping strategies Self-compassion, affirmations, and inner child healing practices Throughout this episode, you’ll hear Alix talk about the importance of reparenting oneself to address and heal from mother wounds. The meeting concluded with discussions on tools for inner child work, shadow healing therapy, and managing depression through self-awareness techniques. Taking care of oneself for personal growth and emotional presence for loved ones was highlighted, with plans for upcoming resources on mother wounds and courses for deeper exploration.
