Why Do You Parent Like That?

Why Do You Parent Like That is a parenting podcast with one set of questions and one million ways to parent. Join host (and ya new bestie!) Abbey Harrison as she interviews a new parent each week and asks them the same five questions. The goal is to hear how wildly different answers to the same questions are depending on who is answering them. As a parent it's easy to feel like everyone is parenting the same way except for you, we're here to show you that that's not true! This pod is all about celebrating and learning from alllll kinds of parenting. We are stoked to have you here!

Kahurangi Carter (@kahucarter) on Young Motherhood, Two Under Two, Parenting as a Political Act, How Parenting Shaped Her Journey to Government, and Kids Being Their Own Person?

OH, we are so back! An honour to be back in this space for 2026, an even bigger honour for my first guest to be the gorgeous Kahurangi (Kahu) Carter (Ngāti Maniapoto, Tainui). Kahu is the Greens Party MP for Christchurch Central. Not only that, she is a mum of two. She had her first, Freddy (great name), and then 14 months later had Waiata! They are now 18 and 17. We cover so much in this episode, but we do get a lot into the nitty gritty of politics and how the current government is affecting the every day tangible difficulties that parents are facing. I am really proud of this platform, and being able to provide the opportunity for parents to hear who the parents are that are working hard to make this country better for us and our kids. Kahu is one of those people, and I hope you love this episode. You can find Kahu on instagram here and TikTok here. Parenting is Political with Sophie Moskowitz feat. DR HEATHER JOHNSTON (@cradlednz)

Parenting is political - and navigating baby sleep advice is a big part of it! Dr Heather Johnston of Cradled is one of the most qualified people in Aotearoa to help us deconstruct some of the messages that have dominated the world of baby sleep for the last century - and more! Heather brings to this kōrero her years of training and experience as a medical doctor, an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and sleep qualifications from the Possums program specialising in Neuroprotective Developmental Care and from Lyndsey Hookway’s Holistic Sleep Coaching Program. In this episode guest host Sophie Moskowitz (@imperfectparents.nz) dives deep into the subject of baby sleep with Heather, exploring Heather’s own personal parenting and professional journeys. They look at the pressure on parents to sleep train and the social, cultural and political systems that have created an environment where so many parents are feeling more confused and overwhelmed than ever. We hope you find value, comfort and reassurance in this episode and come away remembering that there is no “one right way” of doing things. You can work with Heather 1:1 with online appointments, or access sleep workshops for various ages on her website. She also sells merch and a few feeding products. You can access Heather's work via her website here and her instagram here. If you’re in Auckland and want access to in-person support where we bust myths and normalise parenting experiences, you can join an Imperfect Parents antenatal course, postnatal support group or playgroup. Sophie’s Imperfect Parents website is here her instagram is here and her tiktok is here. DECEMBER! DECK THE HALLS! LISTEN TO THIS GEM OF A HUMAN BEING! Lydia Tuaiti (@ifoundlydia) is the coolest. She's fun, she's a girls girl, she is reflective, and self-aware, and all-round just the coolest. I am so honoured that she was happy to sit down with me and talk about her experience of parenthood (including stepparenthood). This is a perspective I have wanted to share on the podcast for a long time, but I wanted to make sure I was being careful with all parties involved. Lydia is the most respectful, caring, considered lady and I love the way she talks about her role in her family. You can find her instagram here and her tiktok here! She is one of my favourite follows on the internet, so please go show her some love! Tell her we sent you! There will be one more main episode, and probably one more Parenting is Political episode, before the end of the year. The rest will be funnnnnny/silly/solo/a bit about me episodes! Parenting is Political with Sophie Moskowitz feat. GEORGE PARKER!!

In this Parenting is Political episode, Sophie sits down to kōrero with Dr George Parker (they/them) for a conversation about why representation and inclusion matter in healthcare and social services - for all whānau but especially for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.  George talks us through their journey from midwifery, to advocacy mahi with Women's Health Action, and then into academic research as they discovered gaps in the available data. We discuss the difference that safe, inclusive, whānau-centred care can make on people's wellbeing.  George shares their knowledge and experience so generously and, in our opinion, this should be essential listening for anyone working in the perinatal health and support space. George also mentions the publishing house Flamingo Rampant, who published their children's book "Bell's Knock Knock Birthday". If you are a parent of a child aged 18 and under, and identify as LGBTQIA+, please consider filling our the Inclusion Through Difference survey here. Di McHardy (@_mamas_meals) on Resilience, Not Being Type A or B, 2 Under 2, a Postpartum Career Crisis, and the Love of Cooking

And so the tradition of having wonderful conversations with wonderful people continues! Di McHardy (who you probably already follow @_mamas_meals) is just the kindest, coolest, most easy-going lady. I will never get sick of speaking to parents who have seen the need for a new resource and created it themselves. Di has done that this year by self-publishing her cookbook 'Family Cooking'. You can see Di's work at her website, here! Family Cooking would be such a great Christmas present if you're looking for one for someone in your life. I say it in the episode, but I am cooking adverse, and I have loved looking through this book and have done a shop to try out some recipes (watch this space - I'll keep you updated). This episode was actually just lovely to record. I felt like I was talking to someone I have known for years and years! I am so lucky that this is (kind of) my job. Marama Davidson (@maramadavidson) on Being a Mum of Six, Navigating Work and Parenthood, Having Activist Parents, and Unconditional Love "Warts and All"

Nope, I cannot believe it. This simply cannot be real life. The Marama Davidson sat down on this lil old pod to speak with me about her parenting journey.  As much as I want to shower Marama with praise and adoration, Marama is the first person to point out that she is as human as the rest of us. So I will suppress my natural instinct to rattle off compliments and instead opt to thank her so much for the vulnerability, generosity, and humanness that she imbued into our conversation.  We know her as the badass co-leader of the Greens, but she is also a mum and a Grandmother and those are two roles that she cares so much about. I loved hearing her humanness.  PLEASE VOTE FOR US FOR LISTENER'S CHOICE AWARD AT THE NZ PODCAST AWARDS 2025!!! Click here! Join the Why Do You Chat Like That FB group here! PLEASE VOTE FOR US FOR LISTENER'S CHOICE AWARD AT THE NZ PODCAST AWARDS 2025!!! Click here! No intro from me today because there was no housekeeping! I'm still alive and well, don't panic!  The podcast gods have blessed us because Sinead Corcoran is back for part 2 of her episode! This time she is answering episodes 2-5. If you haven't listened to part 1, head back and listen to it. Her story isn't all sunshine and rainbows and laughs, but this episode is definitely the laughs part of her story. She had me giggling (and I'd had two pals by this point in our conversation, so I was a bit giggly!!)  Sinead is, simply put, crack up. I love how fine she is to say the inside thoughts out loud, especially when it's something we have all thought at one point. I think everyone needs a Sinead in their lives. To remind us how not serious life is, and how silly parenthood is, even when it is all a lot and deeply serious.  If you would like more of Sinead, please go and grab her book It Nearly Killed Me but I Love You . Parenting is Political with Sophie Moskowitz feat. EMILY WRITES!

Chef Sophie is in the kitchen and she is COOKING!  Welcome to the brand new podcast segment called 'Parenting is Political'! My fantastic pal Sophie Moskowitz (of Imperfect Parents fame) has been thinking about starting a podcast for a while, but has been wrestling with how much of a time commitment it is. So we decided why not give those conversations a home on the WDYPLT feed?! Sophie has started her tenure here with a banger of an episode. She and writer/activist/journalist/mum/crack up internet personality Emily Writes chat about Emily's experiences in activism, the books she has written, building and finding community, and being a mother to children with (very different) health journeys.  Please share this episode far and wide, review, comment, like, rate, alllll the damn things. It can be scary trying new things, and Sophie is trying a new thing.  Where to find Emily/her work:  Writing/Weekly Newsletter Instagram Where to find Sophie/her work:  Instagram Website TikTok Follow the pod on socials, or koha our work: Instagram TikTok Substack Buy Me a Coffee If you have a story you reckon would be interesting to hear on the pod, flick me an email at [email protected]  LLOOOOOVVVVEEEE YYYOOOUUU  (say it back)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sinead Corcoran (sineadcorcoran_) on IVF, HG, Elective C Sections, Love is Blind With Your Baby, Being Relentlessly Vulnerable, PND, and Being so Young and Gorgeous Everyone Thinks You're the Nanny

Did I or did I not tell you that season 2 was going to be bigger and better than ever?! I have followed and loved this lady for a good, long while, and you'll soon see that I really took the opportunity to yap. Sinead has recently released a book called It Nearly Killed Me but I Love You  which I insist you read. It is so fantastic, and there were so many moments that I felt so completely seen.  Sinead is strong, authentic, funny, realistic, vulnerable, approachable, down-to-earth, witty, self-aware, and so much more. I basically never wanna stop talking to her ever?? Vivie is so, so lucky to have her as a mum. And her work will be such a taonga to so many parents in the throes of those parenting trenches we find ourselves in. The fact that new parents will be able to reach for this book and feel immediately less alone makes me feel very warm and fuzzy!!!!!  If you listen to this episode and feel inspired to make some change or help the perinatal mental health space, this is a petition calling for the betterment of perinatal mental health services in Aotearoa. Huge thank you to Kristy Maguire for creating it and her mahi! You can follow her here on instagram. Please, please do share this episode with friends or on your socials. BONUS: Answering Burning Questions with Kate Zame (@katezameslt)

This season I wanted to introduce some new segments and styles of content, because this pod is a space for so much more than the main episodes (but they aren't going anywhere, don't worry, they are my lifelong love). So here is a new segment. Answering Burning Questions is a safe space where we can all come together with good faith and compassion, and ask and answer questions that we usually feel are too awkward or difficult to ask! When I floated this idea to my friend Kate Zame (@katezameslt) she could not have been more on board with the idea. It takes vulnerability and generosity to put yourself in this space, and she did it willingly. She knew how valuable this resource would be. Kate and Kelly are just the most beautiful humans and I am unbelievably grateful to them for trusting me with their taonga of a story.  So, here are some listener submitted questions that Kate took the time to answer with honesty, clarity, and enthusiasm. If you're wanting to submit questions for our next guest of this segment, keep an eye on my social media to know how/where to do that! Resources mentioned today: EAP services to access counselling through your employer Proud Conception - NZ podcast about queer families and their ways of creating a family Children's books: Love Makes a Family by Sophie Beer, Making A Baby: An Inclusive Guide to How Every Family Begins by Rachel Greener, The Pirate Mums by Jodie Lancet-Grant, The Bravest Knight Who Ever Lived by Daniel Errico. Please, please do share this episode with friends or on your socials. I would love for this episode to get into the ears of those who need to hear it. Kate Zame (@katezameslt) on Finding Herself, Five (27) Chickens, Being an AFAB Non-Birthing Parent, the Many Ways to Create a Family, HG, Parental Preferences, and the Magic of Christmas

This episode feels like a really special one. It's one that I have been fostering for a long time, mainly because I wanted to make sure that Kate and her wife Kelly felt confident in my motivations and ensuring that they knew I was only approaching this with the most care and reverence. Kate Zame is a badass SLT, and that's how you might have come across her work (and, valid, cos her work is phenom). But, another reason why Kate is so cool is because she has a really unique experience of her journey to parenthood. I don't want to give too much away in the show notes, but this is an episode that everyone needs to listen to. This isn't just for the queer community, this isn't just for allies, it's for everyone. I also just want to brag for a second here, cos Kate is also my friend, and she's exactly the kind of incredible friend you'd expect. I am so excited to share her with the world, and for all of you to fall in love with her too.  Content forecast: There is mention of difficult births towards the end of question one. There were a bunch of resources mentioned in this episode, so here they are! Ohhhhh it feels good to be back.  I'm so thrilled to be back with you all, and with Dr Morgan Edwards as my first guest, no less! I feel so honoured to have had Morgan on the pod with me. She is just an incredible wahine. I so admire her ability to stand on her ten toes about the things she believes in, even when she's copping flack for it. I really loved being able to hear more on her parenting journey, because usually what we see is the incredible health communication skills! If you love this episode, please share it with some friends! We have some huge plans for season 2 (we because there's three of us now!!) and I want to bring lots of friends on board to listen along!  There were so many announcements at the start of the pod, but the only important one is that I'm going to be at the march across the bridge for Palestine THIS SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 13!! Hey, heeeeey! It's the season one finale!! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE FOR THIS LONG I LOVE YA SO DAMN MUCH!  This episode is with my brother-in-law Hayden Donnell. He is the father of my sweet, sweet nephew and niece (whose voices you have all become very familiar with in my pod jingle) and our spouses are siblings. You will very quickly learn that Hayden and I have a bit of an unhinged dynamic, but that's why I knew it needed to be on the pod! And what a better way to wrap up season one than to bring you a bit of unhinge and chaos. Is it a bit less serious than my normal episodes? Yeah. Is it still fantastic? Absolutely.  Hayden isn't a public figure, but his work is fantastic. You'll find lots of his writing on the Spinoff, and you can find his TV series Get it to Te Papa on the Spinoff too! If you like his vibe, definitely check out his work cos you'll love that too.  A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED TO MY GAZA FUNDRAISER! I mush so much about Cass in the intro and my pre-pod ramble so there isn't too much more I need to say here, but I was really thrilled to get the opportunity to sit down with my old pal and have a meaningful conversation about our parenting journey. Our younger selves would be so damn proud of us. The world is better for having Cassidy Skelton. Seeing her wee family thrive just makes me heart swell.  In the introduction I speak about how 100% of my earnings from the podcast from the month of July will be going to Gaza Aid. If you want to contribute to that, listen to the pod!  That's all for this week!!  LOOOOVVVEE YOOOOOU (say it back) Follow WDYPLT on social media!:  Instagram TikTok If you wanna hear the secret sixth question I have asked Cass this week, you can subscribe to the substack: Substack If you have a story you reckon would be interesting to hear on the pod, flick me an email at [email protected] See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Britt & MJ Meafou (@dadbehaviour) on Being High School Sweethearts, A Fertility Journey, Raising Kind Humans, and Creating Dads' Village Postpartum

Blow me down, we've got a couple! It has been on my wishlist for a wee while now to have a couple speaking on their parenting experience together, and we got that this week with Britt and MJ Meafou!  You may know MJ as @dadbehaviour on instagram. He shares his life as a Dad on there, but also has created a stroller club for dads in Christchurch! An opportunity for Dads to get together with their kids and other Dads and catch up. MJ is passionate about creating community for Dads in the postpartum stage, the way Mums are so good at doing.  MJ and Britt are two golden humans, it is just evident that they are kind to their core, passionate about their mahi, and deeply committed to giving Arthur and Mimi the very best childhood they can. MORE COUPLES LIKE THIS PLS!  You can find all the details of MJ's work and info about upcoming events he is running for Dads on his instagram page @dadbehaviour  Keeping it short today, because, as I say in the ep, I am deep in the midst of grieving my beloved Grandfather. Thank you for all the kindness and love that has been shown to me since telling the internet about his passing.  LOVE YOU! (say it back) Follow WDYPLT on social media!:  Instagram TikTok If you wanna hear the secret sixth question I have asked MJ this week, you can subscribe to the substack: Substack If you have a story you reckon would be interesting to hear on the pod, flick me an email at [email protected] See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Abby Bridgeman (@theearlydaysnewzealand) on Solo Parenting, PND, ADHD & Parenthood, Working in Healthcare, and Janky Placentas

Abby Bridgeman (@theearlydaysnewzealand), y'all. She has quickly become one of my favourite people, and I am really grateful to this podcast for introducing me to her.  She wears so many hats: nurse, mum, neurodivergent, parenting educator, total badass, and we get into most of them on the pod!  I could yap on for a long time about how much I appreciate and value her education and her friendship, but I think it's pretty evident in the episode. I am so grateful to her for her vulnerability and trusting me to share her story on this platform. She really goes there and that is what makes this podcast good. I can only share as much as the guest shares. And Abby shared.  If you're a parent looking for some evidence-based, practical, actually helpful, easy to understand, calm down your anxieties, parenting education, Abby is ya gal.  I talk about it in the episode, but a heads up that in a month's time there will a month break from posting podcast episodes as the first season is 20 episodes. When I return for season 2, I will be posting episodes fortnightly. Just looking ahead to going back to full time work, I'm having to shift things to make it alllll a little bit workable. Hopefully eventually I will be able to go down to part time employment and part time with the podcast and return to weekly posting, but that's still a while away! I hope you all understand that I'm doing this to avoid burnout and make sure that I can keep posting on a consistent schedule.  While you're here, why not do all the things?! Ben Boyce (@ben_boyce_) on Fostering Your Kids' Interests, Parenting Teenagers, Being in the Public Eye, Navigating Social Media, and Plane Vomits

Haaaaaayyyyyooooo!  Welcome back for another week! I'm so glad you're here!  You have found this podcast while I am in the depths of norovirus and coming to you live from my bed. Everything hurts, chills, shakes, fever, headache. It's a whole thing. Which is WHY you will hear a weird automated intro from me this week. It's my words, but I truly did not have the strength to get out of bed and get my microphone to record the introduction. So, THIS was my solution. I got a bit silly with it sorry, I'm blaming sickness delirium.  The episode this week is with Ben Boyce, which, what the actual heck?! Ben is someone I have grown up watching on TV and now listen to on the Hits breakfast show, and the fact that he was willing to take the time out to talk to me about parenting is just testament to what a cool guy he is. Ben and his wife Amanda have two teenage daughters, Sienna and Indie, but you're probably already familiar because Ben, Sienna and Indie are going all sorts of viral across the internet with their comedy content! Ben and Sienna also have a podcast called "When I Grow Up" which you can listen to here!  While you're here, why not do all the things?! Follow, like, subscribe, rate, review, share. Hannah Porter (@bearandmoonz) on Starting a Business at Her Dining Table, the Full Buffet of Pregnancy and Birth Experiences, Being in Business with Your Partner, and Attempting Balance in the Busy

This week I had the joy of sitting down and speaking with Hannah Porter AKA the owner of Bear and Moo NZ! Bear and Moo obviously have a special place in my heart after they became the first ever sponsor of WDYPLT. It was absolutely lovely hearing about Hannah's journey to becoming a parent and her experience of parenthood, as well as running a business and how those two things intertwine.  Hannah is kind, switched on, funny, and you can tell that she is just such a loving and proud mum.  Hannah's other baby Bear and Moo are opening their first ever brick and mortar store in Kirikiriroa on June 25th from 4-6pm. I'll be there celebrating! Come and say hey! The store is at 1 Glennis Place, Frankton.  If you enjoyed this episode, give it a 5 star rating! Or share it! Or review the pod! Sharyn Casey (@sharyncasey) on Raising Boys, 7 Weeks in NICU, Inclusivity, Swearing At The Top of Mount Eden and Narking on Your Own Kids

Holy friggin' moly can you believe that Aotearoa radio kuīni Sharyn Casey chatted with me for an hour about her parenting ~*jOuRnEy*~?! I certainly can't!  Sharyn sat down with me and shared so much about her experiences raising her two boys Tyson and Reuben with her husband (also radio royalty) Bryce Casey.  We talk fertility struggles, the 11 week early baby and NICU experience, raising boys to be loving and inclusive, instilling good values, not swearing til you're 18, dealing with parenting in the public eye, wiping poo off scrotums and so much more. Sharyn is a joy to talk to, and had me cackling throughout the episode (my cackling was actually really hard to edit out, so apologies for how much of it you hear) but also had me really resonating with so much of her story.  I'm so thrilled we, as fans of Sharyn, got to hear this other side of her life that we don't hear about too often, and I'm so grateful for her vulnerability in sharing this aspect of her life that she has kept pretty private.  If you enjoyed this ep, why not share it? Go on, you know you want to. Send it to a boy mum, they'll bloody love it. Also, while you're at it, rate, review, and subscribe to the pod on whatever platform you're listening on.  For the voyeurs among you, the full visual ep is over on our YouTube  As per, follow along with the chaos and fun on the socials (including a giveaway to enter at the moment that you don't want to miss!!):  Instagram TikTok AND, if you wanna hear the secret sixth question I have asked Sharyn this week, you can subscribe to the substack (there is a free subscription, or a paid subscription!) Rāniera Procter (Ngāi Tāmanuhiri, Ngāti Porou) (@raniera_procter) on Raising Children in Te Ao Māori, Te Reo Māori as a First Language, Being a Whānau with a Collectivist Mindset, and Breaking the Taboo Around Stillbirth

I know I bang on about it a lot, but I will just never get over how lucky I am that people as cool and interesting as Rāniera want to talk to me. Rāniera Procter (Ngāi Tāmanuhiri, Ngāti Porou) joined me for an incredibly insightful conversation about his whānau and the values they live. In particular his mission to raise his children with te reo Māori as their first language, a taonga he was also raised with.  Rāniera is a father who walks the walk, but he's very honest that it took him a while to get there. Becoming a dad at 22 was not in the plan, and Rāniera spoke to me about how that woke him up to becoming an adult, as well as ignited his passion for the revitalisation of Māori language and culture.  Rāniera has three children with his ex-wife and he and his wife Kawai are expecting their first pēpi together literally any day now. This is their second pregnancy, after they lost their first baby, Hinepūororangi, who was born still at 33 weeks last year. If stillbirth is a difficult topic for you, please look after yourself.  Rāniera is humble, funny, kind, passionate, gentle, reflective, and just a really great guy to chat to. I am so glad that people like him exist, and families like his exist. Particularly in regards to the incredible de-colonisation/reindigenisation work they are doing for their community.  These stories are worth sharing, so please share this episode with someone you know. Also, give us five stars while you're up there, go on, the button is just there!  If you like to watch your podcasts, full visual episodes are available on our YouTube If you wanna follow along with the general excitement of the pod, come follow our socials:  Instagram TikTok Substack LOVE YOOOUUUU! Charlotte Kells Robertson (@phdmamanz) on Parenting While Studying, The Societal Roadblocks to the Progression of Mothers, The Self-Identity Crisis of Going From One to Two, Releasing Expectations, Parenting Girls, and Knowing When You're 'Done'

Your political ranting, mother-advocate, chaos aunties are back for another week! Here for your listening pleasure is the second half of my conversation with Charlotte Kells Robertson (aka @phdmamanz). In this episode, Charlotte answers the third, fourth, and fifth questions and as you can probably tell from the title, we manage to cover quite a lot of ground! (Us? Chatting? It can't be!) Charlotte, thank you for your knowledge and honesty and humour and alllll the taonga you gave me during this conversation.  I know by this point you are all absolutely in love with Charlotte and her whole vibe, so be sure to follow her here so you can keep up with all her goings on (including her refreshingly real insight to being a mum whilst doing a PhD!)  A huge, huge ngā mihi to Viva La Vulva for sponsoring this episode! It is such an honour to be a small part of the VLV whānau, and I am so proud to be associated with a brand doing such wonderful things for the vulvas of Aotearoa (and beyond!) the product I shouted out this week are the Soothing Postpartum Ice Packs and based on the fact that I still use them at least once a week with my gung-ho toddler, I think they're high on my recommendations list! Don't forget to use code VIVAMAMA for 20% off any orders over $50! Say it with me, everyone! "We love you, Viva La Vulva!!!!" Charlotte Kells Robertson (@phdmamanz) on A Surprise Baby While Studying, Pregnancy and Newborns Through COVID, The Moral Value We Place on Birth, and Motherhood as a Sociological Concept

The best thing about this podcast is that I get to approach people I admire and get them to have a conversation with me, and that is exactly what happened in this situation. I have followed Charlotte Kells Robertson (aka @phdmamanz) for a good, long while now. Her knowledge and insight on motherhood has always left me looking like the mind-blown emoji, and this time she got to see that reaction in person! I could have spoken to Charlotte all night, but I had to cut it off at 2 hours (which is still one hour longer than we were meant to talk - oops!) But, don't worry, Charlotte and I have become fast friends and I can absolutely see some more PHDMAMANZxWDYPLT content in our future.  As I say in this introduction, you're all in luck because we get Charlotte next week too! So this week is the first two answers, and next week is the last three.  Big shout out to Viva La Vulva for sponsoring this week's episode! I can highly recommend the perineal power pack, I purchased it before birth with both of my kids and found the products sooooo good. If you use code VIVAMAMA at checkout you will get 20% off any order over $50. THANK YOU, VLV!  As mentioned in the introduction, WDYPLT is now on the iHeart Radio Podcast Network! Bloody exciting stuff, to put it lightly! I am so thrilled to be partnering with the iHeart team to help this poddy grow, and the community of listeners to grow! I've written a post on my substack about it, which you can read here if you would like to know more, but the TLDR is: nothing is changing from a listener perspective, other than you will hear some ads throughout the episodes. The change is mainly coming on my end of things, with having a big support system helping me learn, and grow, and get better at the podcasting thaaang. This is a really exciting step forward for the pod, and I see great things coming down the pipeline.  As usual, pls do all the things, like, share, subscribe, rate, review, and follow me on social media! instagram, tiktok, and substack!  If you have a story that you believe would be good for the pod, send me an email with a brief overview of your journey! Jo Robertson (@jorobertson.therapy) on Letting Her Kids Take Risks, 3 Boys Under 4, The Family Value of Adventure, and Raising Kids in the Internet Age.

You guys.. I'm honestly lost for words. Jo Robertson is on the pod, and I'm cheesing so hard about it. If you can't tell by the grin plastered on my face throughout the whole episode, Jo is a bit of a personal inspiration for me professionally. She has done some seriously, seriously impressive work in the child advocacy and parenting education space, but she makes it so easy to digest! Her communication skills are next level, and you'll see those skills on display in this ep. Jo was so generous with her story, and even though she is the literal expert on parenting, she was so honest about how she isn't perfect. I think that it is so important for us to see that not even parenting experts get it right all the time, because there is actually no way you can. Also, Jo is such an interesting person that during her introduction I forgot to mention that she has done a TED talk AND was an expert on MAFS NZ?!! Can you imagine being decorated enough that those things can be left out in an introduction and you STILL have a full intro? Wild. Simply wild. A small content warning that during the first question segment, Jo talks about a tricky birth and a tricky recovery. If those topics are hard for you to hear right now, please look after yourself and skip forward. Thank you so much to Bennie & the Jets for sponsoring this episode!! Steph Monks (@stephmonksey) from The Edge on Empowered C Sections, Bursting the Newborn Bubble, Apologising to Anyone Who Had Kids Before Her, and Hyping Up the Mums in Her Life

If you've ever wanted to see me try and act cool and normal around someone I have a crush on, this is your opportunity! The absolute charisma-bomb that is Steph Monks joins me on the pod this week, and she's exceeded all expectations of funny, relatable, and insightful. You'll know Steph from her illustrious career in NZ radio, but she is currently keeping us entertained on our drives home with the Edge Arvos show! Steph and her lovely partner Jake have a one year old named Rocco, and hearing Steph speak about her journey of parenting so far was an absolute delight. The thing that struck me the most about speaking with Steph is about how much she credits the Mums in her village for getting her through the tricky early days, and how much she strives to be a champion for the Mums in her life now! She is like the ultimate hype woman for any person looking after a small human and it is bloody delightful. In honour of Steph's philosophy of Mum-hype, if you've made it this far, send a message to a Mum in your life telling them how much of a f*cking legend they are. Once again, the biggest thank you to Bear & Moo for their sponsorship this episode. They even spoiled Steph and sent her some goodies! They have just moved warehouses AND announced their store opening, so huge things happening over there. I'm particularly grateful for the honeysticks watercolours set this week, because Freddy made his Nonna and Grandmum a very cute painting for Mothers' Day. ANNOUNCEMENT!!! Why Do You Expert Like That?

Don't ever say I don't treat you right, my babies!!! It's a whole new segment coming to your feeds! Why Do You Expert Like That is going to be a bonus episode that features alongside the main episode every 6 weeks or so. I'll be asking a parenting-adjacent expert 3-5 listener submitted questions and give them space to answer in a long-form way. IT'S SO COOL, Y'ALL! Our first expert is Jo Robertson (@jorobertson.therapy), a NZAC registered counsellor who takes private clients but also does heaps of awesome courses and workshops and seminars about sex/love/relationships/parenting/having tricky conversations with your kids etc. she basically takes every conversation that you naturally want to shy away from and makes it accessible! But she also just has awesome, awesome advice for those hard-to-work-through conflicts/dilemmas/sticking points that come up in parenting. So, obviously, I need some questions to ask her! Here is the google form https://forms.gle/2ykbdvdCtxXE95jk7 please use it! Go and ask questions! I'd love to have a bunch to choose from. As with any new thing, it's a bit of extra work, and if it's not something that people are into then I won't keep doing it. So if you're into it, let me know! LOVE YOU! Nic Haldezos (@nic_haldezos) on Loving Your Partner Unconditionally, Two Under Two, Male Postpartum Depression, and Laughing Through the Chaos

Shut the front door, we've got a Dad!!! As I say in the introduction, something I've wanted from the beginning of this podcast is for this to be a space for parents of all genders. There are a lot of resources out there for mums and femme-identifying parents, and I think dads and masc-presenting parents can get a bit lost in the chaos. So I am so grateful that the wonderful Nic Haldezos (@nic_haldezos @nuggetcreative) agreed to be our first pod dad! Not only that, but he came on and literally told me "no questions are off-limits, I'm an open book" which is so generous and so kind. Nic is a guy who lives his life as a dad first and everything else second, and he and his fiancee (@cassidyskelton) do everything they can to live their lives intentionally to be the best parents they can be. I actually adored listening to Nic's perspective, and about how he and Cass stay a solid team in amongst the chaos of two under two. The way he talks about Cass will make you melt! The biggest, biggest ngā mihi to Bear & Moo for sponsoring this episode of the podcast. They even let me give away a $100 voucher to one of my listeners this week! I am bloody lucky! If you wanna support the pod, go and support them. Use our discount code WDYPLT10 at check out for a 10% discount on any non-sale items. Thank you, Bear & Moo! And good luck with your big move this week! Renata Wiles (@renataroaming) on Being a Mum in Business, Finding the Balance, Equitable Relationships, and Going for It

Renata (@renataroaming) is just so, so cool. She's the founder of the Roam with Kids app and is on your social media feeds sharing all kinds of baby/kid friendly events and spaces. Renata chatted with me this week about so many great topics, but I was particularly impressed with how politically clued in she is. Renata is passionate about changing the landscape so that birthing parents have just as much opportunity to crack the business world as non-birthing parents do. I found our conversation so inspirational, and it gave me the affirmation I needed that I am allowed to take up space through the creation of this podcast. Go and download the Roam with Kids app, and follow Renata everywhere! Show her some love and support a mum doing rad, rad things! Please note a bit of a trigger warning during the "what the f was that" question portion, we talk about our births which weren't super straight forward (shoulder dystocia and postpartum haemorrhage) so if those feel like tricky topics for you, feel free to skip over that section or catch us back in the next episode! As usual, the BIGGEST THANK YOU to Bear & Moo for sponsoring this episode. Another example of NZ mums in business supporting other mums in business is B&M sponsoring this ep! Buckle in, cos this is a goodie! Sophie Moskowitz joins Abbey for a brilliant conversation about her parenting journey and the isolation of parenting during COVID being the experience that sparked the idea of her business Imperfect Parents NZ. Sophie has been a nanny, an ECE teacher, a parent, and is now an antenatal facilitator and parenting group facilitator, so parenting is her thing. Her wealth of knowledge and wisdom will leave you yelling "YES, AMEN" (like Abbey does a few times throughout the pod). I could talk with Sophie for hours, and have plans to get her back on the pod to answer some listener questions, but, for now, enjoy this episode! If you're interested to find out more about Sophie and Imperfect Parents NZ, follow @imperfectparents.nz on social media or check out their website https://www.imperfectparents.co.nz/The biggest thank you to Bear & Moo for sponsoring this episode! Sonya generously shared so much of her parenting story with me this week, including surprise pregnancies, her non-perfect births, not letting your childhood affect the childhood you create for your kids, finding the fun in everything, and how to not panic about the world maybe being on fire? I understand why she is the darling of the baby naming world because she is someone I could talk to for hours and not get bored. Please go and send her some love for her vulnerability, honesty, generosity, and crack up-ness in this episode. You'll find her @thebbnamer across socials. ABOUT THIS SHOW
