Wildstorm Addiction Podcast – Episode 51

Subscribe to the show: RSS Feed | iTunes Show Notes: Welcome to a another episode of Wildstorm Addiction, hitting our stride again with the trifecta month, Our resident Wildstorm experts Joe David Soliz & Benjamin Murphy review Midnighter #3 (2015). 00:00:09  – Ben welcomes everyone to episode #51 and gives the obligatory spoiler alerts warning for the issue being reviewed. 00:00:37  – Ben continues with no “news” and addresses some fresh listener mail. Brian Polk (23 mins of Ska Podcast – 23ska.com – @radjose writes in: Last episode, I think it was Matt (L) who wrote in asking about Rainmaker being half-sister to Threshold and Bliss and where was that established. It was established in the pages of “Team Seven: Dead Reckoning” where we see Steven Callahan and his wife announce that they are pregnant. When the baby is born the doctors tell Steven that both his wife and baby are dead. It’s all a plot by Craven to get the Gen-Active baby. His wife overhears this, fakes being dead until she can grab baby Rainmaker and high tail it out of there back to her family on the reservation to help be raised. Later we see Callahan’s new family along w/ his 2 new kids along with his new wife. I think there was more in the Gen12 series, and yes, we see Steven bite it at the beginning of the Gen13 mini-series. Question for you two: If the WildStorm Universe could come back today how would you like to see it? Pick up right where they left off? Or should we join a universe that has been in progress for the last several years and has built their way out of “World’s End” and unravel the story of what happened between the end and now as the books are being published? 00:08:14 – Joe reviews Midnighter #3, released on August 5th, written by Steve Orlando with art by Aco, cover by Artyom Trakhanov with variant cover by John Paul Leon. Romulo Fajardo, Jr. makes the cover credits for his amazing colors in this issue. 00:17:34 – Ben gives an update on other Wildstorm related sighting and tie-ins from the other DCU 52 issues for the past month. Crickets! 00:22:13 – Ben continues to give a run-down on the upcoming books and character appearances  in the new DCU June 2015 relaunch. Maybe this reunion is getting off on the wrong foot… For the week of 10/07 – MIDNIGHTER #5 – Grayson and Midnighter have finally cornered the man selling the tech that was stolen from the God Garden! Wildstorm Addiction Podcast – Episode 49

Subscribe to the show: RSS Feed | iTunes Show Notes: Welcome to a brand new amazing yet one year late episode of Wildstorm Addiction! Our resident Wildstorm experts Joe David Soliz & Benjamin Murphy review Midnighter #1 (2015) and discuss the completion of both Future’s End and Convergence events, as well as some other Wildstorm appearances in the DCU (no longer the New 52). 00:00:01  – Ben welcomes everyone to episode #49 and gives the obligatory spoiler alerts warning (but really if you haven’t read any of these issues, you didn’t miss anything this past year). Remember, all written reviews on the website are spoiler free and usually get posted within a day of print release (Joe’s not doing anymore written reviews, for shame!). 00:01:42  – We’re back yet again after an entire year in the making! Ben continues with a paltry amount of “Wildstorm” related news collected over the past year’s time, if that’s what we’re calling it these days. The Divine Right Hardcover scheduled for a Dec. 2014 release never happened. Instead they released a massive 400 page softcover(paperback) edition. This is a great way to catch up on Max’s story if you’ve never gotten the chance to read this title and it’s crossover event into Gen13 and Wildcats. The Authority Heroclix came out in the next set, DC Heroclix: The Flash. Ben went crazy and somehow got them all. Some are very common and cheap (Jack Hawksmoore, Swift, Apollo, and The Doctor), some are not too bad (Midnighter), and others are a bit too pricey (Jenny Sparx, The Engineer). The podcast is now five years old, but we haven’t yet cracked the 50 mark! Sounds a lot like some Wildstorm titles…well most Wildstorm titles that I know of. 00:03:47 – Joe reviews the first issue of an old Wildstorm character in a solo title spun out of the Grayson series, Midnighter #1, written by Steve Orlando with art by ACO and cover art by ACO; variant cover by Bryan Hitch(The original Authority artist). 00:19:11 – Ben gives an update on other Wildstorm related sighting and tie-ins from the other DCU 52 issues within the past year. Big thanks and shout out to John Pannozzi from Clark’s Bar (now on Facebook only) for helping us keep up with these appearances!!! Future’s End #0,1(FC),3-4, 7-10, 13, 15, 17-18, 25-27, 32-34, 36 (FC) – Grifter appearances (FC = Front Cover) Future’s End #1, 12, 16, 24-25, 32-37 – Apollo and Engineer “Stormwatch” appearances, The Engineer gets “hacked” yet again Future’s End #1, 9 – Midnighter appearances Grayson #1, 2, 4, 5, 6 – Midnighter appearances; introduced to the “God Garden” and the Gardener (new character that created the Midnighter), Grayson #4-5 had appearances by Apollo as well Convergence #0 – WildC.A.T.s (1992) #1 cover art shown in the Who’s Who in Convergence back pages; this team is never shown in any of the other Convergence titles (cut yet again or more to come post Convergence?) Convergence #1 – Shows original Gen 13 team in Telos’ convergence “matrix city viewer” Convergence: Nightwing/Oracle #2 – Divergence: Midnighter “Sneak Peek”, 8 full pages of Midnighter preview, all new content not repeated in Midnighter #1…more of a prelude than a preview. Convergence #7 – Apollo and Engineer “Stormwatch” appearance Convergence: Aquaman #1-2 – Deathblow appearances Convergence: Superman The Man of Steel #1-2 – Gen 13 appearances Convergence: Shadow of the Bat #1-2 – Wetworks appearances 00:29:12 – Ben continues by giving a run-down on the upcoming books and character appearances  in the new DCU June 2015 relaunch. Remember, all these books are available digitally the same day as the print release at the DC section of www.comixology.com For the week of 7/01 – MIDNIGHTER #2 – Marina Lucas woke up this morning as a suburban martial-arts instructor…but when God Garden tech unexpectedly falls into her lap, she’ll end the day as the deadliest woman on the planet! That’s bad news for her – and worse for the Midnighter! For the week of 8/05 – MIDNIGHTER #3 – Midnighter’s up against Multiplex, the man with the power of infinite self-replication—in other words, all his dreams are coming true! Infinite clones mean infinite bones to break… For the week of 9/02 – MIDNIGHTER#4 –  Grayson and Midnighter—reunited at last! Granted, it wasn’t Grayson’s idea, and yes, technically Midnighter might have kidnapped him. And, uh, brought him to Moscow to fight a herd of feral vampires. Maybe this reunion is getting off on the wrong foot… 00:31:02 – Joe gives some quick shout out’s to Clark’s Bar. Which the original message board has ceased to exist. But Clark’s Bar the FB group is alive and well with our 11 members https://www.facebook.com/groups/1036575389702716/.  Get twice the Valiant coverage now with our friends of the show from the Only the Valiant podcast at http://www.onlythevaliant.com. Wildstorm Addiction Podcast – Episode 47

Subscribe to the show: RSS Feed | iTunes Show Notes: Welcome to another episode of Wildstorm Addiction! Our resident Wildstorm experts Joe David Soliz & Benjamin Murphy review Stormwatch #20, Ravagers #12, and Team 7 #8, as well as some other Wildstorm appearances in the new DCU 52. 00:00:00  – Ben welcomes everyone to episode #47 and gives his spoiler alerts warning. Remember, all written reviews on the website are spoiler free and usually get posted within a day of print release. This month on our “Friends of Wildstorm” series, where we bring on a lifelong or recently converted  fans of the Wildstorm Universe, we have Titanthrope (who asked that his identity remain confidential) and is a regular at Clark’s Bar and one of the last die-hard Wildstorm fans next to Joe, myself, and Chris Striker. 00:05:42  – Ben continues the slowing Wildstorm related news as it pertains to the current books in the DCU. The only news for us is that we have decided to take a hiatus for the summer. Now that we’ll only have one title to review we just thought it would be a good time to take a breather (we only do 1 show a month as it is now right? Such pansies!!). As of now, Stormwatch #23 is solicited for August with No Final Issue tag (thank God!). The rumor is that this year’s New 52 September event will be villains month where the villains will take over each title for the month. I’m putting my bets on it being Lobo and also possibly being the final issue of Stormwatch. Maybe the BleadingCool “Max Faraday” trademarking rumor will spice things up a bit. But at this point I’d say that’s a stretch and can easily be peddled as Jim’s pet project, not Wildstorm specific. 00:09:25 – Joe starts our final monthly reviews off with the holdout title of Stormwatch issue #20. Released on 5/01, written by Jim Starlin with art by Yvel Guichet and cover by Jim Starlin. 00:18:35 – Our guest and friend of the show, Titanthrope, keeps it going with the review of the final issue of Team 7 #8. Released on 5/08, written by Justin Jordan with art by Jesus Merino with cover by Gary Frank. 00:26:57 – Ben gives his review of the final issue of Ravagers #12. Released on 5/08, written by Michael Alan Nelson & Tony Bedard with art by Diogenes Neves and cover by Ken Lashley. (Rant much Ben? Dude you need some pills or something!) The Authority baddie we were referring to was Seth, not Zed. 00:43:33 – Joe gives an update on other Wildstorm related sighting and tie-ins from the other DCU 52 issue #20’s that have released this month. 4/24 All-Star Western #19 – Stormwatch backup story (according to solicits, appears to conclude in July’s issue #22) 5/08 Deathstroke #20 – Last Issue: John Lynch and Majestic appearances to help end this title 00:47:01 – Joe continues by giving a run-down on the upcoming books and character appearances  in the new DCU relaunch. Remember, all these books are available digitally the same day as the print release at the DC section of www.comixology.com For the week of 6/05 STORMWATCH #21 While searching for the truth about the Kollective, the team runs straight into the arms of Lobo! (Subsequent issues usually scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month. Pick them up and join us at the end of the summer to discuss!) For the week of 5/22 ALL-STAR WESTERN #20 And in the backup story, a never before seen Stormwatch team takes the spotlight! 00:49:50 – Joe gives some quick shout out’s starting with Chris Striker’s The Higher Authority’s message boards Clark’s Bar to continue the Wildstorm integration discussions among long time Wildstorm fans at http://theauthority.ws.  Also check out our friends of the show, the Image Addiction podcast as they cover new releases from Image Comics and The Savage FINcast as they cover The Savage Dragon. Wildstorm Addiction Podcast – Episode 45

Subscribe to the show: RSS Feed | iTunes Show Notes: Welcome to another episode of Wildstorm Addiction! Our resident Wildstorm experts Joe David Soliz & Benjamin Murphy review Stormwatch #18, Ravagers #10, and Team 7 #6, as well as some other Wildstorm appearances in the new DCU 52. 00:00:00  – Ben welcomes everyone to episode #45 and gives his spoiler alerts warning. Remember, all written reviews on the website are spoiler free and usually get posted within a day of print release. This month on our “Friends of Wildstorm” series, where we bring on a lifelong or recently converted fans of the Wildstorm Universe we have Jill Johansen a.k.a. Raye from Clark’s Bar. Jill is one of the regular’s at Clark’s Bar and is one who gets some great in depth discussions going on at the boards. She’s also really good at keeping up with posting news and she is an avid Apollo and Midnighter fan. Jill, gives us a quick background on why and when you started following Wildstorm. 00:02:08  – Ben continues with plenty of Wildstorm related news as it pertains to the current books in the DCU. Our podcast is 3 years old! It’s hard to believe it’s been 3 years since we started out at the Comic Addiction and they let us spin off into our own podcast. Thanks to our podcast “fathers” Chris Partin and Michael Smith who still host the Image Addiction podcast. Artist Scott Clark passed away. He came on with the launch of the original Stormwatch in 1993 and was heavily associated with Wildstorm over the years. Most recently we covered his work on the Grifter title. He was only 43. Inker Dave Beaty, who we interviewed a couple of months ago, has come to our Grifter Facebook page and offered to add some behind the scenes material.  He recently added a couple of Scott Clark’s sketches for the book.  Find the Grifter fan page on Facebook and follow it so you can check it out. Superman: Unbound releases on DVD & Blu-ray on May 7th and it has a preview of the next DC animated movie, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. Grifter had a small role in the comic story Flashpoint so whether or not he’ll get a cameo in the movie remains to be seen. Newsarama reported that there will be a Planetary Omnibus, a comprehensive collection of the Warren Ellis/John Cassaday series that will include the core series as well as Planetary: Crossing Worlds. No release date announced yet. (thanks to John Pannozzi from Clark’s Bar for the info) Kurt Busiek’s Astro City returns with a new ongoing series in June. While not a Wildstorm Universe title, Astro City did make its debut under the Wildstorm imprint and had several mini-series afterward. Brett Booth snuck a picture of Backlash on the cover of Nightwing #21, where Booth will become the regular artist. And finally the DC Heroclix: Teen Titans set is out and we have first looks at some of Ravagers and Gen 13 figures in the news section of our site. Be sure to check those out if you haven’t already. 00:08:00 – Our guest and friend of the show, Jill Johansen, starts it off with the review of Stormwatch #18. Remember, all these books are available digitally the same day as the print release at the DC section of www.comixology.com For the week of 4/03 STORMWATCH #19 Team StormWatch is lost in a dimension shift—so what team will rise and take their place? Wildstorm Addiction Podcast – Episode 44

Subscribe to the show: RSS Feed | iTunes Show Notes: Welcome to another episode of Wildstorm Addiction! Our resident Wildstorm experts Joe David Soliz & Benjamin Murphy review Stormwatch #17, Ravagers #9, and Team 7 #5, as well as some other Wildstorm appearances in the new DCU 52. 00:00:00  – Joe welcomes everyone to episode #44 and gives his spoiler alerts warning. Remember, all written reviews on the website are spoiler free and usually get posted within a day of print release. This our first of hopefully many, “Friends of Wildstorm” episodes where we bring on a lifelong or recently converted fan of the Wildstorm Universe. They hash out the recent news, issues, and give us their reviews right along side of us. There is no better way to start off this inaugural endeavor than by starting it off with thee O.G. Wildstorm fan himself, Chris Striker. Founder of theauthority.ws and stormwatch.ws fansites, as well as the numero uno hangout for Wildstorm fans far and wide, the Clark’s Bar comics forum. 00:02:16  – Joe continues with plenty of Wildstorm related news as it pertains to the current books in the DCU. First up, the original Stormwatch #1 launched 20 years ago in 1993. Happy Anniversary to our favorite protectors of the planet! Jim Starlin revealed his gatefold cover for April’s Stormwatch #19 and it lived up to it’s WTF certified status (which is what all the covers for April were marked as). There is an alternate version of Apollo and Midnighter (whether or not these are the actual Wildstorm versions remains to be seen but their costumes are a dead ringer) and we get the New 52 debut of Hellstrike. We also get a male Engineer and a new century baby called Jenny Soul. Three other new characters are the identified as Storm Control, the Forecaster, and Starlin’s own creation called The Weird. Source via: ComicBookResources And if that’s not enough Stormwatch for you, All-Star Western #20 has another Stormwatch back-up. Be sure to pick up All-Star Western #17 on February 27th to see the first Stormwatch back-up! And now after all of the good news, we’re here to turn it around and continue the crotch kicking that has become the norm as a regular Wildstorm fan… Not one, but TWO titles are being cancelled with Team 7 and Ravagers in May! Talk about WTF!! I guess I jinxed us when I said we were going to be the Stormwatch podcast. BUT the Team 7 #8 solicit released a spoiler when it mentions Majestic as one of the characters that parts ways with the others in this issue. Deathstroke is also being cancelled but issues 18, 19, & 20 will feature the Ravagers. DC Comics Editor-In-Chief Bob Harras: “We have plans. We have Beast Boy in there, we have Terra, you’re going to see them in other titles in upcoming months. Caitlin Fairchild, you’re going to learn things about her — so again, not to sound like a broken record, but these characters will be ongoing. We have interesting things planned for them, and I think some of them will be very surprising.” The Wildstorm Resource Wiki is dead for now.  It was shut down on us with no warning and the creator James has tried to contact Wetpaint with no luck.  Their could be a variety of reasons why they shut us down, we could have been using too much space under the free service, Wetpaint also just got bought out and seems to have been re-branded as a TV-only Wiki.  Whatever the reason, the chances of us recovering the Wiki are slim to none at this point. (GRRRR!!!! We may be able to scrape it by hand from the wayback machine… Let’s go troops we have some work to do! Last snapshot was in July of 2012) http://web.archive.org/web/20120721014549/http://wildstormresource.wetpaint.com/ 00:08:39 – our guest and friend of the show, Chris Striker, starts it off with the review of Stormwatch #17. Wildstorm Addiction Podcast – Epidsode 24

Subscribe to the show: RSS Feed | iTunes Show Notes: Welcome to another episode of Wildstorm Addiction! Our resident Wildstorm experts Joe David Soliz & Benjamin Murphy talk about the new DCU version of Voodoo on an exclusive interview with writer Ron Marz. (Ron Marz photo courtesy of Luigi Novi) 00:00:35  – Ben welcomes everyone to Episode #24 and introduces our special guest for the evening, Ron Marz, writer of Voodoo. Note: It wouldn’t be an interview podcast without technical difficulties. This time our interviewee is on a standard telephone which is a first for us, so the quality may not be the best. However Joe was having major internet slow downs so he may pop in and out of certain conversations. You’ll have to excuse his loudness at times. 00:01:10 – Joe welcomes Ron and thanks him for being on our show. 00:01:22 – [WA – Joe] You have done some great things for the industry(the famous Emerald Twilight story which introduced Kyle Rayner, CrossGen, the revitalization of the Top Cow Universe, just to name a few), but where did it all begin? How did you get your start in the industry? 00:01:41 – [Ron] I was kinda led by the hand by Jim Starlin who was in the industry long before I began writing. We just happened to live in the same area and ended up at the same parties. I had been working as a sports writer, but he suggested the idea of writing comics to put food on the table. He threw me into the deep end of the pool by giving me Silver Surfer as my first monthly assignment. 00:02:38 – [WA – Ben] Because you’ve been in the business so long, many people look towards you as their influence. But who/what are some of your influences as a writer? 00:02:48 – [Ron] As far as comics goes Starlin is right up there since he sorta gave me a crash course into comics. It’s certainly a learned skill and there is a lack of visual writing in comics these days for the artist. Jim definitely showed me the ropes on comics. Alan Moore and Frank Miller in the 80s. Beyond that Stephen King, Charles Dickens, Robert E. Howard, Tolkien. In my youth I read more novels than I did comics. A lot of my background comes from prose. 00:04:50 – [WA – Ben] What made you decide to take on Voodoo?  Is she a favorite character? I know you’ve worked in the Wildstorm Universe in the past so I’m wondering what stood out in order for you to take on Voodoo. After talking to Jim Lee at last year’s New York Comic Con he promised that Wildstorm would be back in some form, and it seems as though he may be protecting some of his favorite characters that he created. So that’s why we want to know why you chose to take on Voodoo. 00:05:27 – [Ron] It’s pretty simple, I got a call on a Friday afternoon and was told that we have this book do I want to write it. It’s pretty well know that I was one of the later writers brought into the whole relaunch. I like that it’s a character that doesn’t have any pre-existing baggage in terms of having to stick to any previous continuity. Just the fact in being involved in the DC relaunch. I think it’s a bold step forward for what we’re doing as an industry. Non-hardcore readers are going to be affected by the fact that these books are available the same day digitally as they are on the stands. Being a part of this move is really exciting for me. So all of that played a factor into it. And the other aspect was, Sami Basri who I had worked with on some Witchblade issues. I’m a fan of his and was excited to work with him again. What he’s doing now, I’m stunned about. The level of work that he’s doing now is spectacular. 00:09:19 – [WA – Ben] I have a follow-up to the pricing for the relaunch. Is the idea on the retail side that DC will do poly bagged editions with the digital codes and the newsstand editions living side-by-side on the local shelves forever or just for the launch? 00:10:02 – [Ron]  I have no idea, I’m not plugged into that side of it, I think it’s mostly just the Justice League launch. I certainly understand the brick and mortar retailers being upset. DC is really going out of its way to include the local shops in the relaunch and its business plan going forward. It’s a really interesting time in the business because we’re on the cusp of deciding where that delivery mechanism goes. I don’t think anyone has the answer, but I think it’s obvious that the digital aspect is going to have an increasingly large aspect of how people get their comics. I admire DC for striking out on this path and trying to bring readers back into the fold through the digital outreach. And I also admire them for not just kicking the retailers to the curb. I think it’s an important step for comics to be a little less of a niche entertainment medium and a little bit more mass media. The honest truth is we don’t know where this is going to go. It’s exciting and it’s scary at the same time. 00:16:47 – [WA – Joe] How much collaboration did you have as far as designs and story elements with Sami Basri? Over in Stormwatch, Apollo and Midnighter got some very noticeable redesigns. From what little we’ve seen of Voodoo she doesn’t seem to be redesigned very much. Can you discuss why that is? 00:17:24 – [Ron] Sami Basri is in Indonesia, he’s literally on the other side of the world for me. But frankly more and more that’s the situation because of the leaps in technology. You are working with guys on the other side of the world that may not even speak the same language. It’s weird some of my best friends are on the other side of the world that I never really see. It’s a different way of working than comics have never really been done. I’m not in contact with Sami every day. The level of collaboration really depends on how that particular partnership works best. In terms of Voodoo’s design, we aren’t really approaching Voodoo as a superhero. So we aren’t really approaching her design as such. Some of the promo artwork they chose show that she’s at stripper, or at least we think that she is. That’s something that was a part of her previous incarnation and very much a part of the background character in Wildcats. That was an aspect that I wanted to keep, at least for a while, in the book. Working as an exotic dancer aspect might not be what everyone thinks it is. There’s a reason for it that’s part of the story which will be revealed as we go. I think the book is unapologetically sexy within the bounds of a teen rated book. 00:22:11 – [WA – Ben] That’s something that Joe and I were wondering. There is a concern amongst Wildstorm fans that the WSU characters will be watered-down for the DCU integration. Since Voodoo is a stripper we were wondering how it’s going to fit, so thanks for shedding some light on it. 00:22:46  – [WA – Ron]  I don’t want to give too much away but this is an espionage book in a lot of ways, Voodoo is the spy, she’s an espionage agent. We don’t know who she is working for initially.  It’s not exactly the same character that appeared in the Wildstorm Universe. There will be some aspects to her that will be new. Voodoo is naturally seen as an outsider as far as the readership goes. And I wanted to use that as part of the story as a point of view character as we explore what the DCU is now. 00:25:58 – [WA – Joe] Voodoo has always been part of action books but as a solo character will her stories be more character-driven or will there be a mix of action too? 00:26:22 – [Ron] If you are only getting action in a book or only getting character in a book, you are only getting half a meal anyway. I didn’t exactly say she’s the good guy all of the time either… 00:30:31 – [WA – Ben] Are there any Wildstorm characters that we will be seeing coming into these books or are there any Wildstorm characters that you’d love to write into them? 00:30:51 – [Ron] Some things that have appeared in Wildstorm books will be in the Voodoo books. As we move forward there are some other characters I’d like to bring in here and there, but not at the expense of showing DCU characters as well. One of the cool things is having that mix and how it all shakes out. She will be a character that grows and evolves over the first year. 00:32:25 – [WA – Joe] There are some people out there who are very excited about the book, but there are some who are not. What would you say to them to get them to give this book a try? 00:33:44 – [Ron] Do you mean there are cynical fans on the internet? I am shocked! I think we are doing really damn good book, in fact I know we are doing a damn good book! I have a pretty good self-critical eye. This is absolutely an edge book. There are things in issue one and two that I didn’t think we’d be able to do. The sexy stuff is sexy and the violent stuff is violent, we aren’t soft pedaling this stuff. 00:40:21 – [WA – Ben] We usually wrap this up with a loaded fun question. Voodoo has always been a magically and spiritually driven character so Voodoo vs. Zatanna: Who wins and why? 00:40:51 – [Ron] Voodoo. Why would I pick the character I don’t write? 00:41:22 – [WA – Joe] Joe thanks Ron once again for joining us and wraps up the interview. 00:42:02 -Joe gives an update on Wildstorm character appearances in the DCU Flashpoint mini-series leading up to the DCU relaunch. For the week of 7/6 FLASHPOINT #3 (Introduction of Grifter) FLASHPOINT: THE WORLD OF FLASHPOINT #2 (OF 3) (Grifter cameo in large group) For the week of 7/20 WELCOME TO TRANQUILITY: ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE TPB For the week of 7/27 FLASHPOINT: LOIS LANE AND THE RESISTANCE #2 (OF 3) (Introduction of Grifter) For the week of 8/3 FLASHPOINT: THE WORLD OF FLASHPOINT #3 (OF 3) For the week of 8/24 FLASHPOINT: LOIS LANE AND THE RESISTANCE #3 (OF 3) For the week of 9/14 STORMWATCH #1 A GOD SOMEWHERE: NEW EDITION For the week of 9/14 GRIFTER #1 For the week of 9/28 SUPERMAN #1 VOODOO #1 00:44:10 – After Ben gives the contact info Joe has “one, more, thing” to discuss. Joe David Soliz and Ben Murphy bring you Wildstorm reviews and news for the weeks of December 8th and 15th 2010. Reviews including Welcome to Tranquility: One Foot in the Grave #6, Ides of Blood #5 (of 6), and Gen 13 #39! 00:00:35 – Ben welcomes everyone to Episode #21 for the weeks of December 8th and 15th 2010. 00:00:45 – Spoiler alerts warning, but all the written Wildstorm reviews at the site are spoiler free unless otherwise noted. Ben calls out Joe for not giving us ratings on the written reviews he does for the site on the last books of each of the Wildstorm Universe series titles. 00:01:35 – Joe gives a shout out to one of Wildstorm’s most talented recent alumns in Rebekah Isaacs. Both he and I picked up her first issue of Magus #1 from 12 Gauge Comics. We both dug this first issue read which has the premise of “Where were you when the magic came back?” But we were sold on it with Rebekah’s art. 00:02:17 – Joe reviews Welcome to Tranquility: One Foot in the Grave #6 Written by Gail Simone, art by Horacio Domingues and cover by Neil Googe. 00:10:49 – Ben loved Gail’s second run with Welcome to Tranquility. It’s great that we were able to get to see this interesting twist on a superhero city one more time before the Wildstorm imprint/universe ended. 00:12:13 – Ben gripes about how the Batman preview is located at the final page of each Wildstorm title ending this month and it is kind of confusing. The 18 years of Wildstorm fan thank you page is awesome and we appreciate it! This page would have fit much better next to the last page of the story in his opinion. 00:13:30 – Joe has some more unanswered questions about the ending of Tranquility. 00:15:06 – Ben reviews Ides of Blood #5 (of 6) written by Stuart C. Paul, art by Christian Duce and cover by Michael Geiger. 00:30:37 – Joe can’t believe that sales of Ides of Blood are so low because this book rocks! Go freaking pick it up people because it may never get traded!!! 00:36:24 – Joe reviews the final issue of Gen 13 #39 written by Phil Hester, art by Cruddie Toran, and an epic cover by Dustin Nguyen. Joe starts off by reminiscing a little bit about the first issue of the original Gen 13 mini series in 1994. 00:44:18 – Ben wraps up his feelings regarding the final issue of the Gen crew. 00:47:54 – Ben gives you both the print and digital Wildstorm Releases for the weeks of 12/8 and 12/15. Wildstorm Addiction Podcast – Episode 14

Subscribe to the show: RSS Feed | iTunes Show Notes: Welcome to another special episode of Wildstorm Addiction! Our resident Wildstorm experts Joe David Soliz & Benjamin Murphy talk about Ides of Blood on an exclusive interview with Stuart C. Paul. 00:00:34 – Ben welcomes everyone to Episode #14. He introduces Joe and our special guest for the evening, Stuart C. Paul, writer of Ides of Blood. 00:00:48 – Joe welcomes Stu and thanks him for being on our show. 00:01:16 – [WA – Ben] This is your first comic, correct?  Other than a few tv shows have you ever worked in any other forms of media? 00:01:44 – [Stuart] I should say this is my first published comic. I did work for another company which had the intentions of turning comics into feature films for Hollywood. Other mediums have been scripts for television and anything else you can think of that needs to be written. 00:03:00 – [WA – Ben] How has the transition been writing for a television shows versus writing for comics? 00:03:07 – [Stuart] It’s been freeing being able to be very descriptive for the artist versus writing for the screen where the director has his own idea of the look and feel. 00:04:38 – [WA – Joe] What made you decide to venture into the world of comics? 00:04:42 – [Stuart] I came in because of screen-writing experience and then fell in love with comic medium. 00:06:39 – [WA – Ben] Who are some of your influences as a writer? 00:06:50 – [Stuart] Some of my influences were Stephen King, and Neil Gaiman who got me reading comics. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was a favorite because I really liked the story-telling. Some of my favorite movies include Sergio Leon’s The Good Bad and Ugly, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Christopher Nolan’s Memento and Inception. 00:11:16 – [WA – Joe] Where did the inspiration for Ides of Blood come from? 00:11:22 – [Stuart] I was thinking about genre stuff and thought vampire stuff was boring so I wanted to make them interesting. Julius Caesar came to mind and it was not done to take advantage of market. For the most part I felt vampires were presented as really stupid but there were a few movies I liked such as Salem’s Lot, Nosferatu, Georege Romero’s Martin. I have to say I hated The Lost Boys though. 00:18:05 – [WA – Ben] For a period piece like this, what kind of research did you have to do? 00:18:20 – [Stuart] I did lots of Roman research. I read the Handbook: Life in Ancient Rome and The Assassination of Julius Caesar, as well as other classic works. The Dacian culture was tough to find research on. 00:21:32 – [WA – Joe] How did you get hooked up with artist Christian Duce for this project?  What about cover artist Michael Geiger? 00: 21: 42 – [Stuart] Shannon Eric Denton hooked us up. He’s from Uraguay and he’s emailing everything. We’ve never met. Michael Geiger and I have also never communicated but he has done beautiful covers. 00:27:12 – [WA – Ben] Was Ides of Blood always going to be the first story you wanted to work on or were there other projects you wanted to get made before? 00:27:44 – [Stuart] I knew Ides of Blood would be first out. I did have a project called Dying Breed but that didn’t pan out. 00:31:59 – [WA – Joe] Does Ides of Blood end with the potential for a sequel?  Regardless, do you have any other projects in the pipe you can talk about? 00:33:18 – [Stuart] The beginning of this answer edited due to series ending spoiler. It definitely has sequel possibilities. I want to go to Egypt and do a Cleopatra story. I do have another project in the works called Bushido 44 but it doesn’t have a publisher yet (Wildstorm, you listening?). 00:37:33 – [WA – Ben] Are you familiar with Jim Lee’s Wildstorm Universe of characters and titles? Are there any characters in the Wildstorm Universe that you’d like to write? 00:37:48 – [Stuart] I’ve read the early Wildcats stuff as well as Alan Moore’s run. I’ve also read some of The Authority. (Joe mentions Stormwatch to Stu because of his interest in Deep Space Nine) 00:40:27 – [WA – Joe] Fun Question! Two-part question.  We already covered your favorite T.V./movie about vampires, but what’s your favorite movie or T.V. show depicting ancient Rome? 00:40:50 – [Stuart] I thought Rome on HBO was a masterpiece. I like Stanley Kubrick Spartacus. (Joe prompts Stu to mention Gladiator) The opening and closing music is “Universal Domain” by Dreamline which can be found at http://www.musicalley.com. Wildstorm Addiction Podcast – Episode 9

Subscribe to the show: RSS Feed | iTunes Show Notes: Welcome to a special episode of Wildstorm Addiction! Our resident Wildstorm experts Joe David Soliz & Benjamin Murphy talk about the Wildcats on an exclusive interview with Adam Beechen to discuss both he and Tim Seeley’s monumental issue #25. Adam decided that with his supreme celebrity status that air conditioning was more important than sound quality. So even though I took a stab at reducing the background noise, in the end I decided to leave it as is. I apologize for this inconvenience, however, Adam doesn’t care about you and says he just wanted to get back to his Mai Tai’s. [Comment in jest by the editor, BEN] Adam really elaborates on many of the questions asked with many insights into what has happened with the Wildstorm Universe over the past two years. 00:00:34 – Ben welcomes everyone to Episode #9 for the week of July 21st. He introduces Joe and own special guest for the evening, Adam Beechen, writer of the Wildcats: World’s End. 00:00:56 – Joe welcomes Adam and thanks him for being on our show. 00:04:37 – How did you get your start in the industry Adam? 00:06:39 – How did you get pulled into the Wildstorm Universe? 00:08:25 – You have a ton of characters to deal with in your Wildcats run. How do you keep track of them all? 00:12:10 – What are some of your influences as a writer, especially coming from an animation background. 00:13:35 – How proud are you guys to be breaking the issue #25 milestone with Wildcats? 00:20:09 – Can you explain the costume changes in the WSU? (Originally meant for Tim Seeley, unfortunately we couldn’t get him on the call at the time.) 00:23:30 – You were able to introduce some great new villains into the WSU with Sebastian and the Red Blade. Are there any classic villains you’d like to bring back? 00:28:20 – We haven’t seen too much change in any of the bigger core characters. However some of the Gen 13 characters(Grunge in Wildcats & Roxy in the Authority, as well as Fairchild in Gen 13) have really been stepping up and taking on more of an adult role, can you explain the decision to highlight these characters? 00:34:16 – After two years into World’s End there are still a lot of people on the fence about the Wildstorm Universe. What would you say to those people to win them over? 00:49:43 – Are there any characters or titles left that you’d like to write or do a solo book on? 00:51:40 – Fun Question! Everyone’s been dying to know(actually just me) who came up with the “cats” in the title pages of the current Wildcats run? 00:53:08 – Adam gives a shout out and an invitation for anyone attending the San Diego Comic Con this weekend. There is a Wildstorm panel Saturday July 24th from 6:30-7:30pm. After the panel Wildstorm will be having a sit-down at the Hyatt bar around 8:30 to chat. Meet Adam there!! [Ben] 00:01:52 – How did you get your start in the industry? 00:03:37 – Who and/or what are some of your influences as a writer? 00:05:07 – You’ve got X-files/30 Days of Night releasing on July 14.  Did you initiate the crossover with X-files or was the idea presented to you by someone else? 00:06:22 -Did X-files creator Chris Carter have any input in this series?  If not, would you have liked to work with him on this project? 00:06:54 -The recent movie, “X-files: I Want to Believe” offered some closure of sorts to the series (In a post-credits scene, Mulder and Scully are seen rowing towards a tropical island).  Why revisit X-files now? 00:09:29 -Besides obviously following the two main stars of the series, what other references to X-files lore can fans expect? And also what about 30 Days of Night fans? 00:10:26 -The majority of your work seems to focus on the supernatural.  What is it for you personally that is appealing about the supernatural? Why horror Steve?! 😉 00:11:53 -Does the story in X-files/30 Days of Night allow for a sequel to this series? 00:12:05 -Are there any WSU characters/titles you would like to tackle? (My co-host Joe wants you to tackle Wetworks!) 00:13:09 -Joe loved your Spectre animated short which was released with the Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths Special Edition DVD. He wants to know if there are any plans to script any other animated projects? 00:14:19 -FUN QUESTION: If you could pick one supernatural creature to be, which one would you pick?  Why? 00:15:10 – Todd McDevitt(Owner of the New Dimension Comics chain in Pittsburgh, PA) discusses with Steve and DJ Cy-Fi about cussing in comics and other media. 00:16:28 – Ben thanks Steve for the awesome interview and Steve plugs his website without knowing it! 00:17:00 – Ben bring us back to the show and again thanks Steve for the interview, it was a lot of fun. 00:17:41 – Joe sets up the review of: A god Somewhere – OGN 00:20:25 – Chapter 1 – Joe reminds us that there are spoiler alerts for this review. 00:32:15 – Chapter 1 – Ben had to give his thoughts on Chapter 1 before moving on. 00:33:59 – Chapter 2 – Covered by Ben 00:45:58 – Chapter 2 – Ben wants to hear Joe’s thoughts on Chapter 2. 00:50:59 – Chapter 3 – Covered by Joe 01:00:32 – Chapter 3 – Joe asks Ben his take on Chapter 3. 01:01:42 – Chapter 4 – Ben finishes up this epic graphic novel. 01:14:12 – Final thoughts and ratings, Joe & Ben 01:17:48 – Whew, sorry about the run-time on this one as we try to keep all of our shows under 1 hour!
