011: Liz O’Riordan, MD | Breast Surgeon Becomes Breast Cancer Patient

from The Cancer Liberation Project · host Hayley Dubin

In this week’s episode, I speak to Liz O’Riordan, an international speaker, broadcaster and award-winning co-author of “The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer: How to Feel Empowered and Take Control.” In 2015, at the age of 40, Liz was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer while working as an oncoplastic breast surgeon in England. In 2018, she had a recurrence on her chest wall and due to side effects from treatment, she had to give up her career as a surgeon. We discuss what it was like to go from treating breast cancer patients to suddenly being a breast cancer patient, what it’s like to be a doctor with cancer, how she was able to move on from the only career she knew, and things she learned as a patient that she never knew as a doctor. Liz also speaks candidly about sex after menopause and how to get the intimacy back with your partner, as well as the best cure for cancer fatigue. For more information on Liz, go to liz.oriordan.co.uk
