054: Weight Fluctuations- What to Need to Know with TMN Coach Lacey

from The Millennial Nutritionist · host Illa Garcia, MS, RDN

It's normal for your weight to fluctuate, but when you’re focused on losing weight this can be a hard fact to swallow. Luckily, the number on the scale doesn’t reflect all that is going on inside your body when you are making healthy lifestyle changes. Millennial Nutritionist fans have asked for an episode on weight fluctuations and here it is! Illa and TMN Coach Lacey Anderson break down everything you need to know about weight fluctuations including what’s a normal daily weight range, how eating out affects your weight (did someone say sodium?), water weight-loss vs fat weight-loss, and the impact of menstruation on weight fluctuation. Plus they dive into an article on the connections between staying active and disease prevention. Lacy Anderson has a BS and MS in Nutrition Science and has a clinical nutrition and nutrition education background. We lose muscle when we are in a state of rapid weight loss as our bodies are metabolizing muscle in order to survive. This is not what we want. We need to maintain and increase our muscles. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will be. Muscles also prevent injury and disease, and provide stamina and energy. When you go on vacation or out to eat a lot, you could see a rise on the scale. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve gained fat but could be a result of increased consumption of starchy foods. Starchy foods like carbohydrates cause our bodies to retain water. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just something to be aware of. For women, your weight will fluctuate during your period. This is a predictable cycle and one you should track. Get in tune with your body. When do you have cravings? When do you feel bloated? Like all cycles, the weight will build up during parts of your cycle and then fall off during other parts. Know when these changes occur, be aware of them and expect them. Hi!
