08: Your Enneagram Type and Eating Patterns/Dysfunctions
from The Enneagram Edge with Host Tracy O’Malley · host Tracy O'Malley
Disordered eating, and how the Enneagram can help In this week’s Enneatalk Tuesday I dig into a very important subject, one that many of you have asked me to discuss—eating habits. I break down each Enneagram type by their fears, desires, and motivations and how these apply to food. I talk about how eating habits can look if you’re healthy and how they may look if you are using food for comfort or control. I share my own story about how this tool has helped me during my health journey and how you can use it to not only become more aware of your habits, but to discover motives behind disordered eating. If you have over-consumed yourself with thoughts about food, know first that you are not alone, that you are safe, and that you are beautiful. Listen to this episode to learn the power of the pause, and how it can help you learn compassion, honor, and love for yourself. Coping with your environment We are all born with unique gifts and dispositions but your environment and trauma can determine how they get expressed. Many of us, including myself, turn to food for comfort, support, control, or use as a coping method to deal with stress and trauma in our lives. If you are struggling or overthinking food, it’s important to stop and understand what is driving this—to know that you are not self-sabotaging but instead trying to protect yourself. Perspective, motive, and growth If you are ready to make a change, attempting to address an issue by changing only the habit results in a short-term fix. The key to understanding disordered eating is to find the root of why it is happening, to learn the motive behind it, to understand and have perspective in check—when this occurs you can have long-term success and growth. I discuss how the Enneagram can help do this, when used correctly. You deserve peace and joy Although you may have had these habits for years, it is not too late to take back control, to understand where it comes from. Don’t let food steal more joy from your life, or let it rob you of more experiences. Know that you can reach out, ask for help, and that you are in a secure place. Most of all, know that you are safe, supported, and that you are loved. Are you struggling with your relationship with food?
