Are the good old days truly the good old days? Today Anna and Kinsey take a walk on the more serious side, exploring history’s outdated and bizarre methods for treating mental illness. Did you know that one of modern history’s most notorious “treatments” i.e. the lobotomy has its roots in the neolithic age?! Today’s journey begins with boring into human skulls in the prehistoric times, continues to its “refinement” in the artwork of the Middle Ages, and its unfortunate return in the form of lobotomies of the 1930s to 1950s. Further reflection on medical “cures” of the late 1700s include the origin of tranquilizers and a reminder that some of history’s most brilliant minds could still mess up from time to time. Today’s travels conclude with a quick assessment of the present treatments and a look at cutting edge treatments that reevaluate the power of psychedelics and phytochemicals.
