1.24 - You Need This Like A Hole In The Head

from Oh the G.O.D. · host What a Concept Productions

Are the good old days truly the good old days? Today Anna and Kinsey take a walk on the more serious side, exploring history’s outdated and bizarre methods for treating mental illness. Did you know that one of modern history’s most notorious “treatments” i.e. the lobotomy has its roots in the neolithic age?! Today’s journey begins with boring into human skulls in the prehistoric times, continues to its “refinement” in the artwork of the Middle Ages, and its unfortunate return in the form of lobotomies of the 1930s to 1950s. Further reflection on medical “cures” of the late 1700s include the origin of tranquilizers and a reminder that some of history’s most brilliant minds could still mess up from time to time. Today’s travels conclude with a quick assessment of the present treatments and a look at cutting edge treatments that reevaluate the power of psychedelics and phytochemicals. Most of all, today’ episode emphasizes the work that still needs to be done for breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, and the importance of seeking help when needed.   Podcast Links to share - your friends will thank you... if not, we sure will! https://bit.ly/itunesotg  https://bit.ly/spotifyotg  https://bit.ly/amazonotg https://bit.ly/youtubeotg    The Good Old Days is produced by What A Concept Productions.
