1.30 - I Swear, Your Honor, the Ghost Told Me So
Are the good old days truly the good old days? In the spirit of All Hallows’ Eve, Kinsey presents a truly chilling account of one of the more unique trials in American history – when spectral testimony led to conviction. Today’s trek through time takes listeners to the turn of the nineteenth century in Greenbriar County, West Virginia. When Mr. Trout Shue loses his wife Zona it all seems like a horrible tragedy. That is until the Greenbriar Ghost enters the scene. Will the townsfolk believe Trout’s pleas of innocence or find his defense fishier than, well, a trout? Kinsey and Anna then discuss some of the more peculiar, spectrally-laced lawsuits in modern history. Tune in for a series of stories oozing with Halloween spirit on this week's episode of Oh the God Pod. 1.29 - Law & Disorder: Ancient Crimes Unit
Are the good old days truly the good old days? On today’s amble through the annals of history, Kinsey guides Anna (and you) to the earliest time we’ve traveled to yet! What was the law like back in ancient Babylonia? What a great question! Hammurabi's Code was based on proportionality, equality, and justice… if you were rich that is! Forget individual rights, Hammurabi valued social order and keeping the elite, well elite. Kinsey explores the most interesting of his 282 laws along with their sentences – which are mostly death. You’ll even learn what was meant by “eye for an eye!” On the trek through time our hosts discuss what the Egyptians, Assyrians, Franks, and more considered just. You don't want to miss this hike through the history of absurd ancient laws, and how they compare to today! 1.28 - Anything you Can Fake I can Fake Better
Are the good old days truly the good old days? On today’s journey Kinsey and Anna are out to find the root of fake news and media manipulation. First, they tumble all the way back to the 40s BCE at the dawning of the Roman Empire. It’s Mark Antony versus Octavian, in one of the first instances of a media campaign based on exploiting scandals. They next land in the 1770s on the eve of the American Revolution. Sam Adams taught the masterclass in media manipulation, with some vitriol and libel thrown in, driving colonists to the first Pizza Gate. Trouble was brewing for sure! Leaping forward about a century and its time to meet Pulitzer and Hearst. Their rivalry to outsell the other led to the birth of Yellow Journalism, which essentially goaded the President into war with Spain. It's possible the CIA explored using condoms to force the damned commies into submission. Kinsey takes us into the present/future with deep fakes galore. Don’t miss this week’s dive through the annals of history where you can at least trust the hosts to tell the truth! 1.27 - Bills of Fury: Filibuster Edition
Are the good old days truly the good old days? Today’s journey takes us way back to the United States in the mid 1800s, a time when the line between politics and WWE wrestling was quite blurry. Kinsey tries out her best announcer voice as she describes two pivotal congressional events in the build-up to the American Civil War. No, not the acceptance of Missouri and Kansas as states, and not the secession of half of the country. We’re talking about times when literal punches were thrown between adult men elected to represent American citizens. Come be entertained by the most absurd Throwdowns featuring Sumner v Brooks and Grow v Keitt. Oh and lets not pretend that today’s politicians have matured beyond resorting to fisticuffs (and shoe throwing) every now and then to settle a disagreement... let’s get ready to rumble! Whispers of the Deep - Chapters 1 through 4
Well, it happened again! Those darned psychic ducks recruited more fowl friends, once more occupying the recording studio. Guess they thought coming back with greater strength and numbers would improve their ability to connect with the mystical energy source?? 🦆 Kinsey and Anna will be back in two weeks with a brand new episode... just waiting for all of the duck droppings and stray feathers to be cleared out. Remember, we're not a big studio - everything is done in-house with lots of love but not a Hollywood-level polish. We count on your feedback to make each episode better, so please keep those comments coming! The intro/outro music is original music composed by Matt. If you want to hire him, let me know! He's still from Ohio (the New Jersey of the Midwest) and we still love him! Life happens, right? But we know you're the best listeners around, and we're sure you'll understand. We won't leave you hanging for two more weeks though. Instead of an episode, please enjoy chapters 1 through 4 of a fictional horror story penned by our very own Kinsey. Dive into the adventures and let us know what you think! If you like it, let us know. If you didn't like it, also let us know! For those of you hungry for more, chapter 5 is coming soon to our Patreon. If you want to hear the remaining chapters, and Patreon is not an option, email us and we can still get you the story. We don't believe in holding back. Dive into the thrilling depths of "Whispers of the Deep," where adventure turns into an unforgettable quest in the Bermuda Triangle. Join Alex and her friends as they sail into the heart of the mystery, only to stumble upon secrets long submerged. What begins as a spirited dive into the unknown quickly unravels into a gripping encounter with the past, as the divers discover a sunken ship that challenges the bounds of history and haunts with its spectral presence. Every chapter pulses with tension and discovery, inviting you to uncover the profound mysteries veiled beneath the waves. Will the call of the deep reveal its truths, or will the ocean's ghostly guardians protect its darkest secrets? If you think our work deserves a coffee (or a can of Monster in Kinsey's case), join our Patreon. Who knows, maybe you'll be a future character in one of these stories, and if you want, we could make you the hero, the villain, or a murder victim! Thanks for sticking with us! 1.25 - A Bucket Worth Fighting For
Are the good old days truly the good old days? Today, Anna and Kinsey stumble upon a medieval Italian rivalry reaching its boiling point. After decades of arguing over property lines, water rights, and who makes the better pizza, the rivalry between two Italian city-states is coming to a head. It’s all about who possesses the golden, money-filled, oaken bucket. Fill your brain with more absurd tales of greed, historical absurdity, and human pettiness. Examining the situation today, our hosts discuss how things have changed (though not too much). It’s an episode that will leave you saying what the buck-et? 1.24 - You Need This Like A Hole In The Head
Are the good old days truly the good old days? Today Anna and Kinsey take a walk on the more serious side, exploring history’s outdated and bizarre methods for treating mental illness. Did you know that one of modern history’s most notorious “treatments” i.e. the lobotomy has its roots in the neolithic age?! Today’s journey begins with boring into human skulls in the prehistoric times, continues to its “refinement” in the artwork of the Middle Ages, and its unfortunate return in the form of lobotomies of the 1930s to 1950s. Further reflection on medical “cures” of the late 1700s include the origin of tranquilizers and a reminder that some of history’s most brilliant minds could still mess up from time to time. Today’s travels conclude with a quick assessment of the present treatments and a look at cutting edge treatments that reevaluate the power of psychedelics and phytochemicals. Most of all, today’ episode emphasizes the work that still needs to be done for breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, and the importance of seeking help when needed. Now back to the adventures into the past, as the (bizarre and unusual) saints keep on marching in. Kinsey and Ellie continue with their quest to uncover history's most unique patron saints in part 2 of episode 17. Today you'll learn all about the best of the rest of history's oddest pious partisans. Like St. Bibiana looking out for those with headaches and hangovers, or St. Erasmus aka St. Elmo and his famous fire protecting sailors (oh and childbirth and intestinal distress to boot). Then there's St. Genesius for actors, entertainers, clowns, and lastly torture victims. Plus St. Giles looking out for beggars, hermits, and breastfeeding. The fun continues with St. Julian, patron of both hosts/hostesses and murderers. St. Theodore makes it rain (or not) while St. Vitus encourages the early birds to rise and shine. The saintly soiree winds down with the always entertaining saints George, Nicholas, and Patrick. So which patron saint do you like best? Let us know! 1.12 - Its the End of the World as They Knew It
Are the good old days truly the good old days? Happy New Year! and what better topic for a new year than that one time the world ended? Let's celebrate and join our hosts as they sift through the prognosticators of the past to learn more about the times when the world was definitely, without a doubt, going to end. Look, the doom-and-gloom crowd is bound to be right at some point... but for now, we can all roll our eyes and chuckle at the man in the sandwich board "the end is nigh!" sign yelling prophecies into a megaphone.
