The desire of God’s people to not have God as their king, but a king like the nations - to reign over them and to fight their battles. We’ll see again God’s sovereign and gracious response to this sinful rejection of him. We’ll see him use this bad plan, to bring about his good plan, to give us not the king we desire, but the king we actually need. And of this king, his Son, Jesus, we have no need to shout ‘long live the king’, because God’s king has conquered death and he will reign forever! (Rev 11.15).
