10: My Take on Therapy and Why It Doesn't Always Work

Sign up for my newsletter! You will LOVE it.My thoughts on therapy are just that... my thoughts. Coming from my personal experiences as a client and also going through a three year graduate level concentrated somatic counseling program. Big takeaways: No matter how progressive a university it, higher education is still designed to feed the system of capitalism and oppression. That's not for everyone, but it is definitely right for some people. Finding an actual good therapist or the right fit is hard and there are many therapists that have not gone as far as you may need them to go within themselves to be able to guide you. Use your discernment when choosing therapists or anyone who you are letting be in your energy when you are vulnerable. The whole attitude of "trauma-informed care" sometimes does more harm than good and keeps people stuck, spinning their wheels. Graduate programs instill fear in therapists that they then need to undo in order to trust their intuition which is, in my opinion, the most important part of doing that work with someone. Being attuned to yourself and the other person requires deep self-trust in your inner knowing. Therapists are dominatrix and witches. People just want to be told what to do and shown the way. It's supposed to feel uncomfortable before a breakthrough and too many therapists baby their clients, keeping them stuck for years and years. Not for lack of trying, but just not knowing what to do/ trying to follow a specific theory or intervention instead of trusting themselves and the client. I believe in human's ability to change in a moment, so I will never keep someone in a box of a diagnosis, condition, or any identity-based limiting belief. Any therapist who does this is doing a major disservice to their clients even if it's under the guise of "social justice counseling."
