10: Norrin

from Into the Blue · host Robby Thomas

Mary wakes up a day late, wired to a bed, and meets the most dangerous thing in Sangara: a man who is genuinely delighted to see her. His name is Norrin. He removes her restraints so politely you could miss that they were restraints, runs one harmless scan, and finds what he has spent a gray career waiting for — a peculiar blue spot at the base of her skull, and a girl attached to it who doesn't know what she's worth. "Forgive me if I appear menacing," he says, and goes right on being what he's apologizing for. So Mary does the only sensible thing left in the last city on earth: she puts a chair into an unbreakable window, learns something about the walls instead, and disappears into the crowd she just terrified — with one address in her head, shown to her by a fish. And Guthrie — eleven years of patience, finally through the gates, one floor away from ending the longest search of his life — walks into an empty room and meets a tidy man with quick hands and a very specific answer. Station 3, the man says. Liars deal in fog; honest men deal in particulars. Guthrie has spent his whole career knowing that. It's exactly why the lie works.
