Into the Blue
by Robby Thomas
When the sky falls, the city runs for the Arks, the hundred-year-old evacuation shuttles everyone spent a lifetime mocking, kept polished as a monument to a doomsday that never came. Mary Solomon, seventeen, daughter of the richest man in the city, never makes it aboard. She drowns within sight of the lifeboats. And, something is waiting for her in the deep. Something with no name in any record, because it is older than records, older than form, older than light. It asks her for rescue. Then it changes her.

21: WhiteOut
A little after midday, the tracks lead Jonah into a battlefield: a dozen Sangara droids dropped in a ring through the trees, every wreck facing inward at something that went through the whole of them anyway. Then the cold stops being weather and becomes a tenant, and the last quarter mile of his...

-
18: The Game
Two days north of the burning horizon, the country goes white and quiet. A boy who came as a guide tells the fire how the machines taught his village their one simple lesson — those who did not fight survived — and a two-hundred-year-old woman says good night to everyone by name. Then a warm,...
-
17: Tartarus
A hundred years ago, in a courtroom built for an empire, nine tired judges sentence the four biggest names of the war: the general, the infiltrator, the factory chief, and Marcus Clayton — head of weapons engineering, father of the machine called One-Zero-One. The investors who paid for it all…

20: Without a Machine
At first light, in a frost-silvered camp in the north country, Hannah counts her people and comes up one short — and the oldest thing alive tells her, without waking properly, that Mary went to find her boyfriend and she'll be back. He is never mistaken out loud. Hannah builds the fire up anyway,...

15: 101
The last officer on the main strip watches the thing that killed Sangara walk toward him through fire it doesn't look at — and the worst part is that he knows the family of its face. It looks like the city's own machines the way a wolf looks like a dog. Light gathers in its chest, and it speaks:...
-
14: Don't Die
In a yard behind a workshop, far to the south, a boy is learning to fight — and losing, every time, to the same face. Not his sparring partner's. Mary's. She arrives between his fist and the world at the worst possible moment, every day, and Albert has a diagnosis he delivers like a measurement:...
-
13: The Vault
They come for Mary before the corridors are awake. Nobody says the word for what the morning is; she knows it anyway. A needle at the back of the neck, a dark room, and the city finally gets its look at the thing it has wanted since the arena — a strand of blue standing out of a sleeping girl,...
-
12: Marcus
In a lab under the last city, a young technician puts a fragment of the enemy under a microscope and finds something nobody wanted to find: a maker's mark. The old manager of the wreckage floor knows it on sight, and tells the story his whole building was built on top of — an empire, a divide, a...
-
11: The Church
Somewhere in the dark, machines are building a machine — one machine, built once, carefully — and when its eyes light, a patient voice gives it the only instruction it will ever need. In Sangara, Mary finds the church from her vision: a monument with opening hours, a forgotten room behind the...
-
10: Norrin
Mary wakes up a day late, wired to a bed, and meets the most dangerous thing in Sangara: a man who is genuinely delighted to see her. His name is Norrin. He removes her restraints so politely you could miss that they were restraints, runs one harmless scan, and finds what he has spent a gray…

09: Red Handed
The city saved them. The city was watching. In Sangara, those turn out to be the same machine. Part Two opens with a recording: four seconds of static with something made of dark water standing inside it. The kindest voices in the last city on earth would like Mary to explain — and when she…

08: Under the Shield
The column stops. And for the first time since the sky fell, machines come over a hill and make something better. Sangara's droids arrive lacquered green and courteous as clockwork, carrying bread, water, and a recorded voice proud of its own kindness — and an escort to walk Mary's company the…

07: Into the Droid
Three words walked him out of a burned town. They did not say where they were taking him. Jonah goes north through the timber on faith and wet socks — and walks into a light that flashes like a signal, a wire strung at shin height, and three strangers who were hunting droids and caught a boy...

06: The Blue
The rescue arrives by dark, exactly as promised. The town doesn't keep the appointment. While Guthrie and Jonah walk a burned main street calling a number nobody will answer, Mary wakes a night's march away — carried out of the one place he knew to look. And the strange girl who saved her offers...
-
05: Hannah
The horn was a summons, and everything answered it. The battle of Dagon Hills: a stubborn little town, a farmer with a pistol his grandfather bought for a war that never came, and Mary — learning in the worst possible classroom that her power isn't armor. It's faith. And faith can be broken....
-
04: The Chief
For two days, something enormous has been sitting in the ashes of the burning city, dreaming of nothing. Mary climbs a ruined tower to save the man who saved her — and for the first time, she chooses the change instead of falling into it. But victory has witnesses: a small, round machine with no...
