This era began with intense persecution but shifted when Constantine's conversion and the Edict of Milan ended it, leading to the lending of pagan practices with Christianity. The Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325, overseen by Constantine, marked the church's surrender of independence to thes state. Figures Augustine influenced doctrine, laying groundwork for the Roman Catholic Church. The doctrines of Balaam and the Nicolaitan led to spiritual compromise and a clergy-laity divide, weaking the church's spiritual power despite it societal acceptance.
