#110 “Don’t scold children, you used to be a child.”

from 1 minute Japanese with Super Simple Japanese · host Super Simple Japanese

#1102025/07/01(火)~ Don’t scold children, you used to be a child ~「子供叱るな来た道だ、年寄り笑うな行く道だ」という、日本の有名な作家さんの言葉があります。 There is a quote by a famous Japanese writer, "Don't scold children, it's the way you came; don't laugh at elderly people, it's the way you go.(Literal)” It means, "Don't scold children because you used to be a child, and don't laugh at elderly people because you will be old in the future. I think it is a good word to always remember. At the same time, it’s a good word to understand the concept of “to come” and “to go,”so I will explain in detail in the text.【Today’s words】「来る(くる)/ to come」 and 「行く(いく)/ to go」I think 来る is sometimes a confusing word.In Japanese, you can use 来る only when someone/ something is coming towards you (a speaker), which is different from English. Let’s look at these two situations. ① A and B are both in JapanA: When did you come to Japan?/ いつ にほんに きましたか?B: I came here in January./ 1がつに きました。②A is in Japan, B is in the USA: When are you coming to Japan?/ いつ にほんに きますか?B: I’m coming there in January./ 1がつに いきます。 (❌きます)Like this, in situation ②, B would use “come” in English, but B can’t say きます in Japanese. Because B is leaving where B is now, which does not mean “きます”, which means “いく” in Japanese. For A, what B is doing is “くる”, but for B, it’s “いく”.※ If you have any questions, feel free to ask me via DM on instagram:)!!★This post is also available on the broadcast channel (Japanese daily tips) of my Instagram. 【https://www.instagram.com/channel/AbbOi9lyhNtGwo6A/?igsh=enhqNGRyajhobnZ5】
