114 Matt Smith Recap

from Noobs & the Whovian

Live from Master Closet Studios, you’re listening to the only podcast on the internet covering three years of Doctor Who simultaneously: It’s the Noobs and the Whovian!  My name is Austin and I’m the Whovian, and these are my sons Corbin and Tripp and we’re the noobs! This is the podcast that introduces a whole new generation to Doctor Who by watching an episode each week and discussing it from the perspective of a dad who’s seen it before, and two sons who haven’t.  Welcome to Episode 114 covering the Series 5-7 with a Matt Smith Recap! Intro We’re gonna do something that we haven’t done in quite a while. It’s been exactly 50 episodes since we did a Doctor Recap episode! We watched the Farewell to Matt Smith special included with the 2013 Christmas specials to help jog our memory somewhat. We suggest you do the same! Misc Trivia  Apparently, Matt Smith actually brought in the bowtie?! He said in The Next Doctor that he wore a tweed jacket and bowtie to the audition and the showrunners didn’t like it at first! Checklist/Favorites Name of the episode spoken in dialogue?Matt Smith cemented his place as the 11th Doctor because he was the first one to be specifically called by his number on screenCreature of the weekAustin – Weeping Angels, honorable mention to Grandpa/The Mummy/Alarm Clock in Rings of AkhatenCorbin – the silentsTripp –  The Silence (so scary and i love the thought that you don’t know if there real or not because you always forget them when you see them. Also love there look.)Bow ties are coolAustin – I love that the bowtie was not only Smith’s idea, but it charged him up just like it does the Doctor!Tripp – yes all the way good choice.HatsAustin – the Dickensian top-hatCorbin – shooting the StetsonTripp – fezzes are cool (which he only wears onscreen for about 8 minutes!)GeronimoRunning count – 16Jammie Dodger sightingRunning count – 4Stuff the Doctor lovesCorbin – toggles; good noun, great verbTripp –  River (oh sad doctor) Jiggery PokerySonicAustin – I like that it shot up out of the control console in Eleventh Hour.Corbin – eleven showing off his sonic to tenTripp –  it has dampers ( it’s so random which is why i love it)TARDIS Austin – I love how much we explored the TARDIS with Eleven. He/we got to meet her. We got to see what it was like to have the TARDIS controlled by an evil mind (House) and mess with the companions. We got to journey to the center of the TARDIS. We got multiple control rooms!Corbin – storing control rooms that haven’t existed yetTripp –  snap to open (i thought it was dumb at first but now i think its cool)Psychic paperAustin – it’s a great reminder that sometimes the Doctor is a total conman. Rebel Flesh/Almost People – he flashed the psychic paper and then went “show me the stuff, you know which stuff.”Tripp – one of my favorite things (i’ve always loved it when he walks into a room pulls it out and goes with what it says) The Question/Doctor Who? (does anyone have a favorite occurrence “ Doctor Who?”Austin – Dorium, Countess ClaraTripp – the Daleks all saying it at the same time. Doctorgangers (duplicates of the Doctor) – Tesselecta, Ganger, Dreamlord, Cyberium, others?Austin – The Ganger DoctorCorbin – the War, Ten and Eleven fightingTripp – the Teselecta was cool Termy-wermyAustin – spacey-wacey – that whole sceneCorbin – no takesie-backsiesCharacter (we’ll discuss main characters below, consider other characters here)Austin – Canton DelawareCorbin – StraxTripp – Jenny and her karate moves.Apparently, The Snowmen was a back-door pilot! (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Who’s Who? AmyAustin – I don’t know which kills me dead worse, “Raggedy man, goodbye” or “I don’t want to go.”Tripp –  can I just say too soonRoryAustin – Apparently, the fact that they kept killing Rory was lost on the writers until fans pointed it out. That’s why they made a joke about it in Angels Take Manhattan.Tripp – love his story arc (specifically when he was an Auton)RiverTripp – Doctor, you’re going to be the death of me.ClaraAustin – The way they brought Jenna Coleman back into the show is brilliant! It’s like what they did with Donna, but they had to get even more creative. Tripp –  favorite character ever love the impossible girl arc (specifically the time travel part were she goes into the doctors past)Eleventh DoctorAustin – I’m official now. Smith is my favorite Doctor. He’s silly, he’s slap-stick, he’s socially awkward. BUT! He also challenges people to be their best. His speech to Jeff in Eleventh Hour kicks it off.His entrance was amazing. Eleventh Hour is almost a perfect episode, and it stands as my favorite Doctor introduction of all time, including Twelve and Thirteen. His story arcs were amazingHis ending… we’ll get there in a minute.Tripp – totally amazing!!!! Can We Talk About the Regeneration Speech? I want to go through his speech and break it down cuz it’s freakin amazing.“It all just disappears doesn’t it? Everything you are, gone in a moment like breath on a mirror. Any moment now, he’s a coming.” “Who’s coming?” “The Doctor” “You… you are the Doctor” “Yep! And I always will be.But Times change and so must I. We all change when you think about it. We’re all different people all through our lives. And that’s ok, that’s good, as long as you keep moving, as long as you remember all the people that you used to be. I will not forget one line of this, not one day, I swear. I will always remember when The Doctor was me.There’s so much going on here, it’s masterful! The Doctor is telling Clara that it’s going to be ok, that change is good. The Doctor is telling her and the universe that he will always remember this incarnation, just like he remembers all of them!Steven Moffat is talking to the audience about their own lives, teaching a deep lesson. Matt Smith, the actor, is talking to the audience, reminding them that moving forward is good, that there were actors before him, and there are many more to come, but we will never forget the previous ones. Moffat is talking to Matt Smith, reminding him to never forget this time, and Matt is telling the audience that he’ll always be around. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Listener Input   Tom from Twitter had some things I want to say about the 11th Doctor era.Matt Smith as the Doctor is brilliant and one of my favourite incarnations. My favourite Companion is River Song (played by Alex Kingston). I love the chemistry between her & the Doctor (Matt & Alex are so good together)My favourite stories are The Eleventh Hour, The Doctor’s Wife and The Day of the Doctor. We’re charting!
